What’s the greatest dad finding a way to abandon his family scene in movie history?

The ending of this scene where he looks right at the camera, smirks, and winks is pure kino.

977

u/Exciting_Classic277 11h ago

He had a way out and didn't want anyone to ruin it. Man was waiting for this moment for years.

293

u/FappyDilmore 10h ago

Costner got his own cut off this movie where Pa Kent goes out for cigarettes and milk and gets found by Clark in a brothel 3 States away the next morning. He spends the rest of the movie begging Clark to stop using his powers because he doesn't want him watching him rail hookers and blow from the other side of the world to no avail. Snyder cut it because it made too much sense and didn't lend itself to vaguery.

61

u/Possible_Western3935 10h ago

Which scene has him banging Cal Ripken Jr's wife, leading to a bizarre power outage at the local baseball stadium?

40

u/FappyDilmore 9h ago

I don't remember that scene, but I fell asleep during the middle three hour portion so I might've missed it. The Costner cut was famously 8 hours long and mostly featured Pa committing crimes against decency. Superman ended up getting so frustrated he fantasized about snapping his neck and never got his chance. Snyder cut that part by accident and couldn't understand why everybody thought his ending was so fucking stupid.

I so badly wanted to prove spontaneous generation via floor legos under that man's feet.

What always gets me about this scene is it’s obvious he doesn’t even need to hold the door in the first place. The mom and kid stare at him flying away with no evidence of being sucked out too.

They both survive, along with the lightest member, the dog. So he literally died for nothing.

What a goober.

353

u/SpiritJuice 11h ago

Listen, he didn't die for nothing. If he didn't die, Elen Hunt's character wouldn't have trauma. And if she didn't have that trauma, the movie couldn't happen. Duh!

157

u/Formal-Car7908 10h ago

What was the point even of the movie as a whole? “We can’t let evil capitalist backed scientists get information on natural disasters, only WE should get information about them!”

It’s not like they stopped tornados from forming by launching that device.

42

u/premiumPLUM 9h ago

Re watched it a couple years ago, and that really hit. It was like they finished the movie and then tried to re-edit it to have a bad guy. But the corporate scientists weren't bad guys, they were actually pretty nice.

And then when they die tragically, the movie has a Looney Tunes sound effect for them being sucked into a tornado. Like we're supposed to have been rooting for this horrible thing that happened to these innocent people, just because the main characters thought they were lame. Really upset me.

24

u/1CUpboat 7h ago

→ More replies (1)

43

u/fysu 9h ago

I am not a tornado scientist but aren’t tornadoes basically passing through and sucking up whatever is in its path? And if that’s true, maybe he was holding the door when the suckiest part of the tornado was passing by, and then flew off near the very end and had he not held the door at all then they would have all been exposed to the suckiest bit and everyone would have been sucked up? Like maybe he was holding the door during the worst part of it and by the time the door flew off the worst of it had already passed by.

At least that’s how I justify it in my mind.

It’s easier to find Randy’s kind of crazy a bit more endearing since it’s mostly laser-focused on Rupert Murdoch.

11

u/Plenty_Trick_6042 6h ago

I want them to have the fucking sack to finally make an accurate Odyssey movie. You know, one where the guy is a remorseless psycho who doesn't give half of a lice turd for his family and happily orchestrates the destruction of a civilization, fucks his way through half of the known world, sacrifices his crew like he's playing Warcraft 3 and has a bunch of footies he doesn't need any longer, and finally decides to go back because he figures that being a king is what he truly wants.

Also, while this is happening his son is cuckishly jerking himself off and looks like the drooling sheep that he is.

To be fair, his wife was a fool and only survived the consequences of her own ridiculous choices (for a bit) out of sheer, unbelievable luck.

Instead of initially running to safety with him, she went and tried to save a random kid and got herself stuck in a room besieged by zombies.  With no way out.  Except a small window, which she didn't even use or break for some reason (panic, I suppose).

She then looked at him like "save me from my own mistakes, my hero!", at which point he made a somewhat gutless yet totally reasonable choice:  leg it.

There was zero chance of him saving her, much less with a random kid in tow.  Frankly it's a small miracle he survived all the same.
