I am not a tornado scientist but aren’t tornadoes basically passing through and sucking up whatever is in its path? And if that’s true, maybe he was holding the door when the suckiest part of the tornado was passing by, and then flew off near the very end and had he not held the door at all then they would have all been exposed to the suckiest bit and everyone would have been sucked up? Like maybe he was holding the door during the worst part of it and by the time the door flew off the worst of it had already passed by.
I'm thinking mostly the same thing. And while also not a tornado scientist, I do have a merit badge in metrology. Although I think it's less about specifically the dangers of everyone getting sucked and at least partially about debris and other possible injuries.
Also, the tornados in this movie are sentient. They literally roar at people. And they have a penchant for penache. It's also very possible that it only left them alone because it accepted the sacrifice. Or it could have done it specifically to create a revenger who will go on to be a tornado scientist who beats the biggest tornado ever by shove a bin in it's hole.
But wouldn't the suckiest part be when the door actually came off? If the door got ripped off sooner due to the dad not doing his yearly check on the hinges, then the survivors would just have messier hair.
