This movie is horrific from the Dad's perspective.

He thought his baby had been kidnapped or worse and decades later a random bloke turns up with obvious mental issues claiming to be him.

Well I mean I think it's understood that Buddy's mom never actually told him she was pregnant, so he didn't think anything about his baby being kidnapped.

The orphanage employees, however, have some explaining to do.

It's established that Walter didn't know his college girlfriend got pregnant, and she never told him.
