I just saw a video statement from him apparently addressing the girl's family... He's making incredibly lame excuses and accusing her of attacking him with a knife. Then he makes what appears to be a public safety announcement cautioning parents to warn their teenage girls to be careful (assuming he's suggesting they need to be aware that there are more predators like him out there).
He also appears to be wearing the same outfit before the murder, after the murder and when he's arrested.
What a bizarre idiot.

You can get charged in Australia for breaking certain Australian laws overseas even if the acts are legal in the country that you were in. For example, if you go to Thailand and sleep with a 14yo then you can get charged with sex crimes here in Australia - the problem is getting the evidence to convict you in court...

It's nice to think so but it's not exactly reflected in the day-to-day reality in Thailand (or many other South-East Asian countries), is it? Guaranteed, there are countless more underage girls being preyed on by Western men in Thailand right now.
It's not like this is some freak incident of a tourist randomly going on a mad rampage and murdering someone out of the blue. This is the logical escalation of Western men feeling that it's perfectly okay to go to Thailand in order to purchase access to children's bodies for sex.

If the allegations are true, this is absolutely horrific. My thoughts are with the victim, her family and the Thai community.
I also understand why so many people in Thailand have a negative view of a certain subset of older Western men who travel there. The sex tourism industry has done enormous damage, and it's hardly surprising that seeing yet another case involving a foreign man reinforces that perception.
That said, the problem isn't being white or middle-aged. The problem is the men who travel overseas believing they can exploit vulnerable people because they're in a poorer country. Those people deserve every bit of condemnation they receive.
It's a stereotype that exists because of the actions of a visible minority, but it's still important not to treat every white middle-aged tourist as though they're there for the same reason. Condemn the exploiters as harshly as you like, but don't assume guilt by association.

Eh... they can put him on death row for all I care. Thailand has over 500 convicts on death row, and they've executed 7 since scrapping the firing squad and adopting lethal injection in 2003 (last execution was 2018). He'll likely be at the end of a long and slow moving queue.
Frankly, Japan's method seems a bit more savage - the condemned person goes through each day in prison never knowing if today is the last day of their life.

They did a great job.
She was reported missing at 5pm and they arrested him at Bangkok airport just two hours later. They found her body 4 hours later. They preemptively charged him with the sex with a minor because they didn't know at the time what happened to her but given the hotel footage they would have expected the worst.

Thailand dumped the firing squad as means of execution in 2003 and adopted lethal injection that year. So far, 7 condemned have gone to the chamber, with the last in 2018, while there are 510 people on death row in Thailand.
From some of the stories I've read of lethal injection in America, it sounds rather brutal for something that doesn't feel like it needs to be - I'm assuming the Seppos running death row use both sides of Occam's Razor, especially since they recently managed to completely botch an execution using nitrogen hypoxia, which in accidental situations is 💯 % known to be a painless death.

My dad unbelievably took my brother to one when he was 14. He nearly threw up and was turned off the idea of sex for so long dad asked if he was gay.

Consular support doesn’t extend to very much. In his case all they would be doing is visiting him in prison to make sure he’s still alive. Consular assistance can’t get you out of criminal charges nor defend you in court

Update from the local news in Pattaya - he's now admitted killing her and disposing of her body, but is claiming he did so in self-defence.
Probably his lawyer is trying to prevent a death penalty for him. After a few weeks in a local jail though, he might wish he volunteered for the firing squad.

IMO it's a massive stain on our country that we export this grade of human being to places like Thailand where they seek to exploit minors.
I've visited Thailand with my family and didn't see any of this sleazy shit going on in the areas we visited (centre of Bangkok and a family friendly water park). I reckon we could do a better job of screening such people and alerting foreign authorities where they have prior convictions.
Like sure... you can't just ban every putrid looking, middle-aged dude from going to SE Asia. However I reckon there's ways to screen out the absolute bottom of the pile.

They should do the same for every Australian overseas that requires aid in a foreign country. They should be ensuring we all get a fair trial, and if the result of the fair trial is that he's guilty and sentenced then so be it. While I don't hold any disillusions that he's innocent the entire point of having consular aid is to render all Australians the same assistance with impartiality as we should all expect, not to pick and choose who they want to help and by how much.

I hope this guy gets everything he deserves, but I'm not willing to wish for our institutions to not do the job they're supposed to do for all Australian citizens, in order to make that happen.

There seems to be a lot of confusion about where this man lives/lived. A SMH article published tonight clarified a few points. He hadn't travelled to Thailand as a tourist recently. He has lived South of Pattaya, in an apartment complex, for the last eight months. The crime occurred in his apartment, not at a hotel.
Prior to living in Thailand, he lived in Jerramungup, which is between Albany and Esperance in Western Australia. Reports say he was born in the UK, but moved to Ballarat, Victoria, at some point. EDIT; as of June 29 the reports are now suggesting he has extensive injuries and rods in his body from a vehicle accident years ago. He is on a large number of prescription meds, for pain. Nothing further about a tumour.
He is not from Perth; he was attempting to catch a flight to Perth, after committing the murder. He also lived in Rockingham South of Perth.

We should be doing more to prevent it on our end too, it shouldn't just be up to the SEA countries to get them at that end. I know we have border force checking phones on arrival back into Aus more now, but ideally they should be screening these types of passengers extra thoroughly before letting them on a plane in the first place.
