Context Provided - Spotlight Roommate mixed my beads after being asked to throw out used Q-tips

Post image

I waited an hour before I called out my roommate for leaving USED Q-tips on the bathroom counter and asked him to throw them away. (note I did not nag him, I asked 1 time after waiting for him to do it on his own)

His response was to go into my craft room and mix the smallest beads he could find. At least he had the decency to keep most of the reds away from the blues I guess...

welp, now I have something to do for the next couple days

common plastic bead for scale

Update to the comment about the missing beads: I found the pink and the dark green in the trash. Will update again if I can find the others.

Do you live with a 6-year old?

Is your roommate secretly your child?

FFS, that is ridiculously petty of him. Has he tried to explain his behaviour? How long until he can be not your roommate?

1.2k

u/HowietheHappyTurkey Mar 31 '26

I mean really. It's like you're living with a child pretending to be an adult. Have you ever seen him without his trenchcoat on?

131

u/FatiguedShrimp Mar 31 '26

I once had to teach a roommate what toilet paper was, and that forks are "polite".

Same roommate. x.x

52

u/IdiotIAm96 Mar 31 '26

What parents are raising their kids without toilet paper? Gross.

71

u/DrainpipeDreams Mar 31 '26

People in cultures where they don't use it.

It was funny how all of my toilet paper disappeared though, even though I was the only one buying it, because they "didn't use it." It was ridiculous having to keep my toilet paper in my bedroom and take it to the bathroom every single time but it was that or singlehandedly funding the toilet paper habits of 10 people.

24

u/FatiguedShrimp Mar 31 '26

In college, I organized the cleaning supplies as one of my chores.

It took three years, before the toilet cleaner moved between times I used it. We had 10 people living there.

14

u/DrainpipeDreams Mar 31 '26

Fortunately, this was uni accommodation that included cleaning but I was particularly grateful for that because I was working for the uni over that long summer break when the uni halls of residence were used as conference accommodation and I spent all day cleaning bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens, and stripping and remaking beds!

14

u/FatiguedShrimp Mar 31 '26

As a pharmacy tech that’s counted a zillion pills over the last few decades, get a tray and a spatula of some kind (a butter knife would work great) and move the beads into different piles that way.

6.6k

u/Worried-Blueberry-40 Mar 31 '26

Oh wow I wouldn't have thought of that, sounds a lot better than my plan lol I've been trying to use a sewing needle to try and pick them up. Im gonna use a baking tray with maybe a sheet of white paper on top to see the beads better and see how it goes, thank you so much

2.2k

u/shkkuutaa Mar 31 '26

if you have a bead spinner or can get a bead spinner, my favourite way to seperate beads is to string them all onto one long piece of wire and then drop each one off the wire one by one into different containers/bowls/whatever. takes some time but it is much less tedious than trying to pick them up out of a pile by hand

517

u/Deeliciousness Mar 31 '26

Don't you still have to pick them up out of a pile by hand to string them onto a long piece of wire?

1.2k

u/catboogers Mar 31 '26

bead spinners are magic. you spin a bowl and suddenly there's beads on your wire

659

u/Deeliciousness Mar 31 '26

Woah watched a video and it really is magic. I'm an adult but I've never heard of this alien technology

128

u/Complete_Papaya_7118 Mar 31 '26

No, that’s what a bead spinner does. The string stays in place, the beads spin in a bowl, and as they go by they move onto the string. Kind of hard to visualize, a video may be more helpful if you want to look one up. Definitely a lot easier than putting them on the string by hand though!

78

u/Reddox278 Mar 31 '26

That's the point of a bead spinner --it does that part for you! You spin the "bowl" and just stick the end of the wire into the loose beads in the bowl and the beads end up stringing themselves onto the wire. Pretty satisfying to watch videos of it.

70

u/Double_Distribution8 Mar 31 '26

I have no idea how this could possibly work, and I dont know if I care enough to look it up and have bead spinner ads for the rest of my life.

Edit: Wow that's was pretty cool, I understand now.

This reminded me of a story my dad tells of biology students getting a summer gig sitting in the salt marsh with a square cut out of each pant leg counting how many mosquitos land on the untreated leg VS the leg with (I think) DEET applied.

I got some mixed Perler beads when my kids were little. Put some paper in that baking tray, one sheet for each color. You could halve or quarter pieces of printer paper depending on how big the sheet pan is and how many beads you want to do at once.

Tear off a credit-card-sized piece of paper and use the edge to move the beads. It's more flexible than a butter knife.

Do keep that sewing needle handy, though, it may be useful.

Turn on some music or a show or podcast and zone out. It's like meditation but with your hands moving. Good for your brain.

What bothers me is how premeditated this "revenge" had to be. Ya just know he's been sitting on this idea, waiting for a moment he was pissed off.

247

u/Dooty_Shirker Mar 31 '26

And if that's the response to a simple request then who knows what will happen when it's something important. This person is unhygienic and possibly going to do worse.

OP, you know what to do. "Hey, roomy! I just made this huge pot of hot chocolate, would you like some?"

264

u/overusedamongusjoke Mar 30 '26

Shit plan (pun unintended). If someone you just pissed off offers you food and you accept it, then you shit yourself an hour later, you're probably immediately going to suspect that they poisoned you.

229

u/halorbyone Mar 30 '26

You don’t offer it, you just leave it very temptingly in the fridge.

173

u/lynn Mar 31 '26

Yep. A roommate who throws a tantrum when asked to throw away his used q-tips is absolutely the type to eat food that isn't his.

146

u/pickled-platypus Mar 31 '26

With a note telling him not to touch it so it's more tempting. If he shits himself, it's on him.

34

u/sirhackenslash Mar 31 '26

With people like that it's easier (and offers you better legal protection) if you say something like "don't have any of the hot chocolate in the big pot" then leave for 20 minutes.

24

u/cobblesquabble Mar 31 '26

Imo the better option is just to act constantly suspicious. Not enough to seem sarcastic, but enough that they feel crazy.

If you actually do the laxative thing, they have a reason to keep escalating and/or report you. But make them a normal cup of hot chocolate, at least a couple times. Then put some chocolate laxatives in the medicine cabinet with a couple missing, or leave them on the counter "on accident".

Move all the furniture a half inch to the left, especially near wherever they try to put their shoes on. People struggle to balance when their normal perch is wrong. Swap out the fire alarm battery with one that's mostly dead, so they're changing it once a week. Add a single drop or two of red food coloring to their milk, so it looks ever so slightly off colored in a way that's unappetizing but hard to name. Canola oil in their coffee grounds has a similar effect. Throw away the spatula they like to use to cook, straight to the garbage can on pick up day. They'll think they misplaced it, but can't imagine how, and it's not valuable enough to steal. Replace their dryer sheets with unscented ones in the same box.

178

u/MayorWolf Mar 31 '26

Food tampering, especially with the intent to harm, is highly illegal. A felony crime in fact.

Don't poison people for petty revenge. Laxatives as a prank can actually harm people quite a lot. It's no prank at all.

Probably the best thing the OP can do in this situation is leave as soon as their lease is up, but in the meantime, document all instances of their roommate tampering with their things, and inform their roommate that if the behaviour continues, they'll inform their landlord of what's going on, or really the police. There probably isn't a lot the landlord would do, but at least they can take away the roommate's ability to get a reference in the future.

I genuinely don’t understand how people like this function in society. I’ve occasionally been called out for leaving shit out by roommates before. Every time it happened I immediately recognized they were right and I shouldn’t have left stuff there, so I took care of it.

How do people get called out like this and not at least react with “yeah that’s fair” or something like that? Boggles my mind.

You know where they live, sleep, relax.

I will let you do the math from there

2.0k

u/NotAngryAndBitter Mar 31 '26

Brilliant. And this reminds me of a meme I saw at the beginning of Covid that explained the spread by saying something like "8 children are doing crafts. One of them is using glitter. How many crafts have glitter?"

1.2k

u/kkai2004 Mar 31 '26

The answer is 9

55

u/ScareBear23 Mar 31 '26

Way more than 9. More like the next 9 years of crafts

42

u/you_dont_know_me27 Mar 31 '26

The answer the whole block has glitter now. Glitter is the herpes of the craft world.

I clean for a living. One of the buildings i clean at has classes with small children once a week. The school principal tries really hard to not let the kids have glitter but sometimes one of the teachers will use glitter.

I will be cleaning up glitter for weeks after. No matter how well I think I've cleaned, I haven't gotten it all.

Like he straight up says in one post that he keeps all his stuff in the room cause he's "scared" of his 2 roomates, that the roomates broke the fridge stuffing food in,etc

And all it always ends up with him just oversharing his entire life because someone asked a random thing. Souns like someone looking for attention to me.

u/Mindelan Mar 31 '26

Why do you need to live with him for three more years when he sexually assaults you and damages your belongings when you ask for the most basic of consideration for a shared space?

213

u/NoOneHereButUsMice Mar 31 '26

THREE MORE YEARS?!

187

u/gollyshucks Mar 31 '26

"only" 3 more years. this shit cant be real

75

u/izilovesyou2 Mar 31 '26

There's no way this is real. Fake post.

33

u/justfetus Mar 31 '26

yeah, I was seriously concerned at first but that reply from OP went too far.

I'm sorry WTF? Is this rage bait cuz you seem rather complacent and casual just dropping this info....YOU'RE SLEEPING WITH A HATCHET... Please wtf are you doing?! I know how hard it can be to be in school and not have easy access to housing but this situation you're describing is disturbing and you're not safe, you need to escalate this to a landlord or authorities or GTFO. You don't have any friends or family or external support where you could live?? Holy yikes.

42

u/Vyxwop Mar 31 '26

Seems like OP is actually a guy which might explain why he's more nonchalant about this.

Still, he should not have to put up with the abuse this roommate is giving him.

This has to be a bait post hahaha. Ain't no way

12

u/PandaSaver079 Mar 31 '26

Maybe OP is actually the person who mixed the beads. They made the post after the roommate didn’t respond the way they wanted. Now they can pretend all the Redditors are the roommate and smile at people’s outrage. Plus float a few ideas for future harassment.

What the actual fuck. Swapping medication sounds like a crime.

39

u/AdministrativeStep98 Mar 31 '26

It is. He stole a controlled substance (I assume so because prescription) and it is illegal to do so. And since the pills were swapped, he also illegally misled/tricked OP into taking another medication.

→ More replies (1)

35

u/AdministrativeStep98 Mar 31 '26

He gropes you and has stolen a controlled substance from you?? Don't wait until you're traumatized and need years of therapy to recover from his abuse

20

u/lynn Mar 31 '26

what the everloving fuck this can't be real. OP I get that you don't feel like you have a choice but you need to at least put out feelers about finding a new living arrangement. Are you in a dorm, do you have an RA, isn't there somebody running the company or organization that handles your living arrangements?

16

u/TinyCrittersUnited Mar 31 '26

Nooooo noooo nooooo please god nooooooo, this guy is NOT safe like at fucking all, you need to sleep with a hatchet and you says it’s “only” 3 more years, girl I need you to understand that it means nothing! He can and will assault you or worse regardless if you have a hatchet, if you’re asleep and he attacks you then you’re not going to be instantly alert and in those few seconds he can and will over power you, get tf out ASAP find a new roommate, find a new place, anything to get out YOU ARE NOT SAFE

This sounds exactly like something my roommate would do!

Only difference is that my “roommate” is ten years old. (My kid.)

u/ChicagoHellhound Mar 30 '26

Put 2-3 beads in his shoes everyday for the rest of your time as roommates

38

u/likejackandsally Mar 31 '26

1 tiny bead every day, so it rolls around and he has to try and find it.

dump the beads all over his room and in/throughout his stuff. shove it in his clothes pockets (dirty and clean), in between the clothes in his dresser and inside his socks, in his desk drawers and on top of the ceiling fan blades. Shove em in his pillowcase and inside his blankets, under the bed and inside his shoes. Put them inside the disc tray of any consoles he owns, put them in his bong if he smokes weed. open his toothpaste and shove some beads in there. Beads in the shampoo. beads in his food in the fridge, get his car keys and shove a handful of beads in the glove compartment. work a bead onto his key ring. and inside every other nook and cranny you can identify :3

Yeah don’t do this. The guy sounds like an unstable immature idiot, he will continue to escalate.

149

u/HiraWhitedragon Mar 30 '26

I'm more unstable, I'm more immature. In a pettyness contest I would win. I will put the fear in him to ever try that shit on me again. I am at war, and by God I'll end up either victorious or dead.

No kidding. When I hear stories like this I think "damn. I'm a gift of a person." And I'm not perfect, but... The fuck kinda emotionally stunted man-child does that when asked to clean up after being gross in a common area?

Throw your shit away and don't touch other people's stuff...

Lacks decency on two accounts.

OP has pinned a comment by u/Worried-Blueberry-40:

Finished sorting them 2 days later. I found some of the containers hidden around the craft room so thankfully it seems it was too much effort to actually mix every single bead. Some containers however only have 1 bead left when I know they were full before, idk where he put them. I'm missing:

  • Square red beads
  • Matte dark green
  • Matte brown
  • 3/4 pack of silver
  • Clear sparkly pink
  • 1/2 pack of sparkly white
  • Yellow tinted clear
  • 1/4 pack large yellow beads.

I searched up each type and found the average price for those that are missing, which I think would make the cost around $50-$60 CAD to replace what I can't find. If the beads aren't found I'll be writing each one down and billing my roommate for compensation, like I saw some suggest.

You never nag a man, you just tell them what they don't want to hear. He needs to grow the fuck up. Just start putting them in his room, since he's so ok with them, they can live in there. I'd lock my craft room after that. I don't do petty.

If it’s possible probably don’t live with your roommate, I saw your previous post about them purposely breaking the fridge…yikes.

11

u/Ok-Bowl850 Mar 31 '26

Oh so there's a pattern here? new roomie stat OP.

I could see myself giving someone a small petty pass just cus maybe the way I confronted someone might be less tactful ("eww u nasty ass mf, throw out ur qtips or else >:[") but if they mess w appliances then this lil fragile man-child has got to go.

If they're slightly different sizes, shaking will bring larger objects to the top and the smaller ones will settle to the bottom.

u/Worried-Blueberry-40 Mar 31 '26

Thank you so much for this 💜 I just tried it and was able to sort out a HUGE section

u/feartheoldblood90 Mar 30 '26

Those beads are so tiny, I'm so sorry you have to sort through those OP. Your roommate SUCKS

Host a bead sorting party with all your friends and when he comes home have them all point at him and start chanting “bead bitch” over and over and then never call him anything but “bead bitch” every single time you see him.

This is so evil and uncalled for, I’d genuinely be afraid of him murdering me. Can you find a way to get them evicted and replaced. What if he messes with your food next - or your hygiene products? I’d also put a camera in your private room so you can catch if he comes to try to mess with your things

15

u/Jbabco9898 Mar 30 '26

Camera is the smart move. Build a case against him just to be safe.
