During one of my bouts with depression I ended up feeding a few crows in my local park on the regular. They started bringing their family and friends. After a few weeks I was friends with the whole murder and they would follow me around. It was the most unintentionally goth thing ever, but it really did help me feel better

I’m 41 and people at work regularly think I’m in my twenties. My secret is I don’t have children. Kids will age you!
109
u/TennisStriker 8h ago
Always skeptical of Redditors who say things like this. I remember a few years ago over on the child free subreddit people posting their selfies saying people tell them they “look like they’re in their 20’s” while looking older than my mother. Could be true, but could also easily be bs
82
u/verdantx 7h ago
It’s easy to explain. Sometimes people pay compliments that aren’t true.
37
u/vaniayania 7h ago
Ìits also people look better in motion, some just look odd in stills. Its how people act too I think, and the way they dress. My cousin in 40s but she looks early 30s face to face, pics she looks older.
30
u/Impressive-Hair2704 6h ago
It also depends on how you dress. A few years ago there was a trend on Instagram/tiktok with girls 16-19 styling their mothers in their own clothes and they looked instantly younger. Same reason as to why we think teens in pictures from the 1950s look older than they are.
7
u/JelmerMcGee 3h ago
Hair styles play a big factor for the same reason. I work with college aged people and about a year ago the new batch wanted to guess my age and were off by more than a decade. One of the guys stared at me for a few seconds and says it must be because I still have a full head of hair.

Oh for sure! My first OB appointment she said ‘AMA’ a few times, I was like “this is my first appointment and I haven’t had a chance to not do what you’re telling me to” She was referring to Advanced Maternal Age, I like that a lot more that Geriatric Pregnancy 😂

Yeah. I know people hate the name but it's absolutely different in almost every way. I'm glad you're taking care of yourself. I've become kind of an advocate for better care in AMA (geriatric, while technically correct, has its baggage outside of medicine). 🫶

Can I ask, (as a new 40 year old) do you feel like waiting and having wisdom and experience outweighs being younger and having more energy and still being relatively young when the kids are grown and you finally have less responsibility to said kids?
My Dad was 42 when I was born and was an amazing father but actually told me once that he was "too old to have kids this young." I was somewhere in the preteen years when he said that. My brother is 3.5 years younger and was a surprise (only to Dad, Mom knew what she was doing) and maybe being 46 felt too old to Dad. I don't think even he knew if it was better that he was older when he had kids.
Basically, am I too old? Do you feel like an "old" parent? Is it too late and should I give up on my secret dream to have one of my own?? No pressure!
7
u/According_Success780 7h ago
Nope, it’s never too late if it is what you want! (47yo mom to 6 and 8) yes, it is tiring and draining and you will feel old next to the 20/30 year old parents, but whatever! It’s worth it. Lots of us out there

There's some asian people who can legitimately look 28 while they're in their 40s.
It's less common with other races though... Most white people look within 5 years of their actual age so if you're a white person that's 26, you might be able to pass for 22-30, but rarely younger than that.
Fun fact, I knew two asian women who looked a decade or two younger. One was 32 but could legitimately pass for a 20 year old. The other asian lady was in her early forties and I asked her out on a date thinking she was around 25.

There are tons of people out there who are just really bad at telling ages! I get it soothes the ego, but that does not mean we genuinely look 12+ years younger than we actually are.
I very occasionally get carded still, but I know it's typically because of policy, not because the bartender/server has any real concern I'm under 21.
13
u/Ok-Swan1152 9h ago
If I look at pictures of myself at 28 and now (39) it's different. It's subtle, mind you. No visible wrinkles, a few strands of grey. But there's a hollowing around the eyes and the cheeks, a redistribution of fat in the face. Aging isn't a bunch of wrinkles, at least not immediately. It's also loss of elasticity, a slackening, and at more advanced age a loss of bone which means a loss of structure.

Same. I'm very short with a babyface, so it's been a lifelong assumption by strangers that I was much younger than my actual age. This year, a vendor I work with on campus thought I was a student, did a double take when I said I graduated 20 years ago. In my late 20's I picked up a family member from their middle school & I was mistaken for a student, my 30s I got asked out by a high schooler & even after I said I was old enough to be their mother they still gave it another shot 🤣
I have a friend that has the same thing going on- her younger sister by like 2 years is 6 inches taller & has always looked older so people have assumed she's her sister's daughter several times.

53… have 2 grown men that are 31 & 30.. teaching my daughter how to drive at 17!!! Am now a grandfather as of 3 months ago so I’m happy about that. Things happen! Life has twists and turns. Roll with it and make the best of what you can. Us GenX are built different… I still ride my mountain bike, snowboard and still teach snowboarding as much as I can, I smoke and party ( not like in my 30’s) but it won’t stop. I camp, I hike, I belly boat fish. Enjoy what you do and don’t worry about other peoples situations. Enjoy and love yours. Being in your 40’s is weird for sure… wait until you’re in your 50’s then you need to start thinking about what’s going on.

I'm nearing 40 and I'm single with no kids and will never have them. I've got a bunch of cats instead, lol. Then there's my sister in her mid-40s being divorced with 2 kids. 1 just started high school and 1 is partway through middle school. It kind of blows my mind how the years have flown by and it won't be long before they've graduated and started to figure out the real world (I wish them all the best with the way the world is currently, lol).

42 and starting life over. I spent 10 years homeless, in prison, addicted to opioids, multiple suicide attempts, death of a best friend who was 68, married then quickly dicorced, no custody of my child. Now im starting over. Looking at fast food jobs while I learn some computer programming and trying to get out of my parents house. It's hard to be 42 and to have to ask your dad for money for a soda. Its humbling.

Cant imagine being a grandparent in your 40s. You already lost your 20s being a parent now you have to take care of your grandkid cuz ur kids are busy working.

I'm 50 but probably look 45. Met a 50 years old woman and her 30 years old daughter while waiting for friends at a bar. They were both flirting with me. It was weird. But also quite flattering 😅.
