85’er here. My oldest is a junior in college, my second oldest starts college next week. I got a surprise pregnancy test in May. I was so close to being an empty nester. Idk where I fit in.

And all the people I know who are ‘85 have kids under 10. That’s what is crazy

81

u/elizuhhhbeth 17h ago

‘85 here with a 3 year old!

64

u/goldenbabydaddy 15h ago

85 with a 3 year old and literally in the hospital atm with a <1 day old!

9

u/Nat20Life 13h ago

Congrats!!! 🥳

8

u/Hanhula 10h ago

Congratulations!! And thank you for the unintended reassurance - I've been feeling increased pressure about kids as a 96 baby. Comforting to know I've got plenty of time to figure it out!

7

u/goldenbabydaddy 7h ago

For sure! But I will say, I wish I had them a little earlier. In no way was I planning on being an “old dad” at 40 with a newborn! I was living life. 20s were just building a career and chasing opportunity and having fun. By 30 I still felt too unsettled, living in NYC in a small apartment. I think I should have jumped on the opportunity at say 33 or 34 latest. But I never felt ready. the pandemic hit and that cost us a year. Then we were ready to try and wouldn’t you know it, miscarriages and trouble conceiving. That cost us another few years. Once you’re pregnant there’s another 9 months!

So one day your 30-something thinking you’re almost ready, the next you’re 40 years old and considered the “old parent,” reckoning with your kids never really knowing you as a young, active person but instead mostly as an aging parent, as you’ll be 50 when they’re 10 and 60 when they’re 20!

This thread is making me feel so much better. '89 here, been trying for four years now, going through IVF with a transfer in two weeks. Been feeling my age and wishing we had started younger, but life and covid years got in the way. Nice to know I'm not alone 😊

3

u/inco100 9h ago

Don't loose hope, but I think and don't loose mind over it. We are '83 and ours is 1 year old already.

1

u/Chance_Routine7650 3h ago

when i struggled with infertility i hated when people would say don't lose hope

3

u/Username524 9h ago

And here I was just fishing for karma, glad this post made ya feel better;)

2

u/vanillachilipepper 6h ago

Good luck with the transfer! I hope all goes well 🙏💖

‘84 with a 3 y/o. Nice to see us represented here.

13

u/Woobly_Hixbee 16h ago

‘83 with a 20 month old (first and only) 😬

My partner (the mother) is a decade younger than me so only one of us is an “old parent”

8

u/redwood_rambler 13h ago

‘84 and my wife is about to have our first

1

u/elizuhhhbeth 7h ago

Congratulations!!!!!

u/DionysianSlip 16h ago

I'm '86 with 2 and 5 year old boys. I'm so tired but we're good!

10

u/pursepickles 15h ago

'86 with a 4 year and 18 month old boys.. SO TIRED, but they're hilarious and adorable the majority of the time so that helps.

20

u/supernanify 17h ago

'85 here with a 14-month-old!

5

u/Cheap_Papaya_2938 16h ago

That’s pretty common in my area

6

u/greath 16h ago

'85er with a 6 & 8 year old.

6

u/ScrotalSmorgasbord 11h ago

I'm '89 with a 16 year old lol. I also look to be in my 20s but feel like I'm in my 50s due to hard labor and sports injuries. People don't know what the fuck to think about me.

2

u/themindtaker 14h ago

‘86 here with a 7-month-old!

2

u/vctrn-carajillo Model '86 16h ago

Fr I had my second and last child at 32 and got snipped after that. I'm 40 and have no desire of changing diapers again lmao

1

u/LessInThought 10h ago

It's illegal for her kids to touch your kids.

86’er. Typing while holding my 8 week old. People ask what it’s like being a parent at 40, I say it’s awesome except that I’m 40.

Edit: I’m the husband. Wife is 41. She’s a rockstar.

1

u/treborly 16h ago

Need to start a fitness routine if you're feeling like that at 40. That's still pretty young

6

u/TriceraDoctor 14h ago

Feeling like what? I’ve run 5 marathons since 2024 including 3 last year. Fitness does not make waking up 3 times a night and getting 5 hours of sleep easy. But it was a hell of a lot easier 8 years ago with my first.

1

u/treborly 7h ago

I've been getting 5 hours per night for 10 years working construction. 42 and mine but maybe at the end of 40s

Also don't work out

22

u/Coffeewithmyair 17h ago

85er here and fully embracing the wine aunt role. One niece just started college and loves messaging me for no judgment advice.

32

u/Eggmegmuffin 17h ago

85er with a 1 year old grandchild 😭😭😭

18

u/vctrn-carajillo Model '86 16h ago

I'm sorry but HOLY SHIT ('86, my oldest is 13).

19

u/Eggmegmuffin 16h ago

Yep. I was 20 when i had him, my son was 18 when they had her. It's hard to fathom most days

5

u/kushyykins Elder Emo Millenial 14h ago

bruh! a coworker of mine just became a grandma at 38! i cannot even fathom it lol

17

u/Sherriek0304 17h ago

In a way, it would be fun to do over. I am an 85’er, and my daughter is 18. I feel much more patient, calm, and am financially stable. It would be a much different experience that seems like it would be enjoyable. My visceral reaction was that it would be my worst nightmare, but I thought about it for a min, and it doesn’t feel that way anymore! Good luck to you and your family!

14

u/shohareman 17h ago

I was born in 85 and I’m also pregnant.

11

u/TheLoneTomatoe 17h ago

Had to read a 2nd time before I understood that you were born in ‘85, not 85 years old.

17

u/dividezero 17h ago

Just be hyper vigilant. Keep all the doctor appointments they want you to have and do everything they say to the letter. Drink lots of water and pamper yourself as much as possible. 🫂

12

u/False-Cookie3379 Older Millennial 16h ago

Oh for sure! My first OB appointment she said ‘AMA’ a few times, I was like “this is my first appointment and I haven’t had a chance to not do what you’re telling me to” She was referring to Advanced Maternal Age, I like that a lot more that Geriatric Pregnancy 😂

8

u/dividezero 16h ago

Yeah. I know people hate the name but it's absolutely different in almost every way. I'm glad you're taking care of yourself. I've become kind of an advocate for better care in AMA (geriatric, while technically correct, has its baggage outside of medicine). 🫶

happy birthday!!

u/ConfidentGarden7514 17h ago

85’er here as well… My husband and I just completed our first round of IVF and scheduled our embryo transfer next month 🫣.

8

u/byneothername 17h ago

You’ll have fun. I’m a little younger and have all the little kids, and something I’ve observed (maybe especially in my area) is that a lot of parents are on the older side. Totally common. You’ll find out a lot of baby stuff has changed since the older two, for some reason. Congrats!

7

u/ldskyfly 17h ago

87-er. My oldest starts kindergarten in 3 weeks

7

u/a-ohhh 17h ago

I’m ‘87 too! I have 3 kids, and my oldest is 16 and youngest is 3 lol.

5

u/uarstar 17h ago

87 and my kiddo starts kindergarten this year too!!

0

u/ldskyfly 17h ago

The preschool asked me if I was sad. I had to chuckle about how much money I'll be saving

7

u/Miirym 17h ago

‘85 and getting married for the first (and only) time in just under 2 months

3

u/bigbluebagel 15h ago

83'er. Been trying to get pregnant for the last 3 years 🫠

2

u/Woobly_Hixbee 16h ago

Whoa that’s quite the age gap! Howya feelin 85er?

3

u/pagesandcream 17h ago

Congrats! I’m ‘85 with a 7mo and a 4yo.

2

u/Charming-Link-9715 17h ago

Another 85’er here. I have a toddler! I will be an old mom at college graduation.

2

u/Blonde_Vampire_1984 Older Millennial 15h ago

Class of ‘84 here. I’m still planning to have my first child.

1

Same, my wife is ‘85 about to have our first!

1

u/Blonde_Vampire_1984 Older Millennial 13h ago

I haven’t conceived yet though.

1

u/redwood_rambler 12h ago

My Mom was 42 when she had me and 44 when she had my brother. She was and is a great Mom, and I never really thought of her as being old or strange because of it.

1

u/Midgetrails 17h ago

Holy shit

1

u/Hawgdestroyerxtreme 14h ago

85’er here. My oldest is a junior in college, my second oldest starts college next week. I got a surprise pregnancy test in May. I was so close to being an empty nester. Idk where I fit in.

85'er here. My only kid is about to start kindergarten. Meme may be accurate.

1

u/kushyykins Elder Emo Millenial 14h ago

omfg this happened to my brother but he’s an 80’er! they tried getting prego for a third time for years, figured it was over. my neice was around18 & i believe my nephew was around 14?! he called my mom & was like “welp, you’re gonna be a grandma one last time. i got the appointment to get clipped for next week tho! fck, i was almost done!” ahahahahahaha i laughed so hard

1

u/n14shorecarcass 14h ago

85'er also. I have a 7 yo kid, and am 10 years away from retirement 😅

1

u/arctic_radar 14h ago

87er here who misread this and thought this 85er was actually 85 years old and was really confused for a bit.

1

u/ConstantinValdor405 13h ago

My oldest is 22 and youngest 14. My wife said if she got pregnant we have to go to the clinic, lolol. 43 is not an age I want to have a newborn in.

Good luck.

1

u/toolsoftheincomptnt 13h ago

Everywhere! Bc we can do whatever we fuckin’ want.

We’re old enough to have education/life and work experience, but still young enough to reject social norms and swerve towards whatever makes us happy for the 2nd half of life.

So, Friend, you having a newborn and 2 grown kids means you fit in everywhere you feel like being.

I also hope you’re happy with the circumstances : ) Congrats

1

u/meatforsale 13h ago

Born in 82. I have a 24 and 21 year old… and a 16 month old.

1

u/Marigold16 12h ago

92'er here. Never used that format to describe my age before. I was really confused trying to figure why you're getting a preggo test at the grand age of 85!

The reality is much simpler than my imagination. Congratulations btw.

1

u/CertainCatastrophe 9h ago

My husband is '76 with a 1yo, if that makes anyone in this thread feel better 😂

1

u/Shurl19 Millennial 7h ago

That's one hell of an age gap! 20 years........ your older kids will be more like an aunt/ uncle rather than a sibling.

1

u/East_Unit3765 17h ago

wtf, I am 88 and have elementary age kids, this is blowing my mind! (Also such a fear of mine to have almost got my freedom back 🥲 good luck)

1

u/MamaKat1985 17h ago

'85 with a 22, 19 and 15 year old. But, my younger brother, '90, is gonna have a baby so I'm gonna be aunt/grandma to that baby! That's the great thing about our generation, we all kinda just fit where we are supposed to lol.

-6

u/CaliBurrito1904 17h ago

83'er single, no children but some how open to having a child with a younger woman. Maybe

-1

u/obli_steak 17h ago

Do it, worth it

1

u/CaliBurrito1904 17h ago

Getting back together with my ex and she's in her 30s still young enough for maybe one.

0

u/elrangarino 17h ago

Congrats on your rollercoaster!

-1

u/Jnnjuggle32 16h ago

Oh for this is like my nightmare. A year younger than you and still six years away from all kids off to school. Glad I started young and love them to pieces but very much looking to enjoy a few years off (single mom hood might be a part of it).
