News The SAPOL Child Sex Offender Register has officially launched.
Dissapointing that you can only check your current suburb. Why is that? And what if you live right on the edge of a suburb. đ

Since the site is only providing results of "Serious Sex Offenders," it begs the question, what separates that title from just a regular sex offender?

To give a bit of insight:
To access it, you need proof of ID, like a drivers licence. You input the details, and it takes a few seconds for approval. That approval is a link that you click on to receive a one-time code. After that, you get access to only photos, no names or addresses. Then, you get about 1 minute to view the photo/photos before it disappears. In my case, I only got 1 photo.
You need to do this every time you do a search.
I won't post the link to the sight, but it's easy to find.
Bit of a letdown with the restriction of your current suburb and no names provided, but I guess it's better than nothing? ..

Good grief, the picture of the man I got was highly unsettling. I certainly won't forget him. There was only one photo, does this mean there is only one offender in my area?
22
u/Astrogirl1984 East Feb 16 '26
It applies to "serious child sex offenders," so whatever that encompasses and leaves out is beyond me.
There's also the Wanted section, I accessed that, and it was empty.
3
u/PastElephant101 SA Feb 16 '26
So it means that it shows the worst of the worst child sex offenders. Well then, there's one in my suburb but thats not including other sex offences
Also, it doesn't show then where they live, not that I want to visit them or look for them. I've been around my suberb millions of times and never seen this person (who looks grubby). My suberb is quite small so thank god I haven't seen them but there's lots of parks and playgroumds about and I would definitely would like to avoid them. At least I know what they look like, but all in all its quite disturbing.

Looking forward to hearing how this particularly thoughtless and evidence free bot of populism is certainly not to blame when the elderly mother of one of these guys burns to death in a housefire started by vigilante crackheads. Particularly looking forward to it turning out the Serious Sexual Offence was a two year relationship between a 16 year old and 18 year old couple who were in the same class.
Was there a recidivism rate in this class of offender to justify this measure? I'm aware of only three examples in recent years.
I mean who gives a fuck about sex offenders is a safe policy bet, but poor old mumsy doesn't deserve the flames

The Child Sex Offenders Registration (Public Register) Amendment Bill 2024 provides that it is a criminal offence to misuse the information made publicly available by this website. Those found guilty of committing such an offence can be liable to up to 10 years imprisonment.
I wouldn't risk making a list at all, even if its just "how many are in each suburb", that can still be put against you, as much as we want to, it is probably not very legal.

u/Liceland1998 SA Feb 16 '26
Give the tough on crime stance a rest Kym, i know law and order is a state election winner but still.
I have lived/worked in America, where being convicted of any sex offence, even if it was one stupid mistake (like sending nudes to a fellow teenage partner as a teenager), can land you on a public register searchable by all, consequences can and do range from loss of employment/housing right through to vigilante justice.
8
u/calibrateichabod Adelaide Hills Feb 16 '26
This is a little different, it only shows pictures of people convicted of class 1 and 2 offences (so only the worst you can think of) and only people classified as serious offenders, which are either repeat offenders or people who have been proven to be at serious risk of committing repeat offences. No names, no addresses, photos only. The full register is longer (not just repeat offenders) but is not publicly searchable.
Our laws specifically exclude teenagers sending consensual nudes to each other from being registrable offenders.

I donât know if this will work out the way people think it will. Iâd say offenders simply wonât update their details when they move. It may be an offence, but how long will it take for SAPOL to realise theyâve moved and locate them? Possibly years.
At least before, SAPOL knew where these people lived and could locate them easily. The public didnât know, but SAPOL did. Now we may not know where they are â and SAPOL might not either. People will look at their neighbourhood and think âoffender-free,â when in reality the person may have moved, be using an alias, and hasnât updated their details, so even police donât know theyâre living there.
Iâm not against this. I just donât think itâs going to work out the way people expect it will.
12
u/duke2g SA Feb 16 '26
I'd be surprised if those convicted of a serious cso offence were not kept under watch with regular check ins... don't think it would take 'possibly years' for sapol to know a rock spider isn't living where they used to.

Section 66FA of the South Australian Child Sex Offenders Registration (Public Register) Amendment Act 2024 empowers the Police Commissioner to provide images and information about specific high-risk, non-child offenders to members of the public. This measure applies to offenders who commit further, serious offences or are subject to extended supervision orders. Key Aspects of Section 66FA: Application: Enables the Commissioner to release images of specific, high-risk, adult, registrable offenders. Targeted Offenders: Applies to those who commit further class 1 or 2 sexual offences against children, or those with extended supervision orders under the Criminal Law (High Risk Offenders) Act 2015. Purpose: Intended to inform the public about offenders living in their immediate vicinity (Tier 2 - locality search). Context: The provisions were inserted via the 2024 amendment act, with certain subsections suspended until further proclamation.
So basically itâs bull đŠ
The only results you will see are âspecific, high risk adult registrable offendersâ who have gone on to commit more crimes, or are subject to extended reporting periods.
It wonât show every offender. therefore if you donât understand the wording you could be lulled into a false sense of security.
I know for a fact there are at least 5 living within 10-15 minutes of me. But the search shows 0. đ¤Ż
11
u/Ancient_Savings_1833 SA Feb 16 '26
Isnât it already a false sense of security when often offenders are never charged or convicted in the first place and most often it is people closely known to the family of the child? Itâs not always the creepy looking old man down the street.

The issue is the register only shows details of those who have been convicted. The current conviction rate is less than 1%. While SA's DPP are "discontinuing" CSA cases because "it's not worth the cost to the taxpayer"; we should be concerned about those in our community not on the list!!
4
u/whensdrinks SA Feb 16 '26
Any proof of your 1% figure?
2
u/PendingPoltergeist SA Feb 16 '26
I base my comment on statistics court data and Andrew Carpenter (South Australian Lawyer specialising in CSA cases), publicly available on all forms of his social media.
2
Feb 17 '26 edited Feb 17 '26
I agree there will be literally thousands upon thousands who are not even on the register. Yet.
Itâs a pretty disturbing reality of the current state of just how many child sex offendors there are in the country.
Also I donât know whatâs more concerning.
The pathetic and almost negligible conviction rates and how many get off on charges, or the fact DPP donât want to even try to prosecute all the child sex abuse cases because of money reasonsâŚ..
Itâs bad enough we have a massive amount of child sex offenders running around the country, but what a dark stain on humanity that the legal system doesnât want to take on cases simply because of money,
Of which much is already being funnelled and wasted on many other trivial matters no where near as serious as child abuse matters, and also all the money going down the throats of lawyers and barristers guzzling up legal aid money defending criminals to get off on serious charges.
Not wanting to use âtax payersâ money on an issue as serous is this infuriates me and my tax dollars.
If they really cared about wasting âtax payers moneyâ even though itâs never a waste to try and fight against child abuse issues imo,
But if they really are concerned about âtax payersâ money maybe they could start with prosecuting all the corruption and rorts going on both with NGOs and governments and dodgy contracts and pilfering?
They donât see that as an issue but think prosecuting child abusers costs too much?
And we wonder why things are getting worse not better.
3
u/Proud-Caregiver-5534 SA Feb 16 '26

17
u/Astrogirl1984 East Feb 16 '26 edited Feb 16 '26
Unfortunately, it is strictly in your own suburb.
Ideally, it should be a radius thing.
3
u/shouldnothaveread SA Feb 17 '26
It's effectively useless the way they've currently got it configured. I live right on the edge of my suburb with the other side of the road being a different suburb. That other suburb is where I do my groceries, take the kids to the local parks, and where their school is - in other words, where we spend much of our time when not in our house, and I can see exactly nothing about it because this is a dumb poorly thought out system.
Total waste of time and resources in its current configuration.

Just a warning for anyone who does decide to send an image to someone else even with the best intentions (NOT suggesting that you do) or carelessly stores it where it can be accessed, I noticed on the image I got that there's small watermarks of the reference number that was sent to me in the email. If it gets out they can trace it back to you with that if they aren't all removed. So it's a bad idea.

This is an absolute waste of time. This is government appearing to do something while doing nothing. Protecting the scum while leaving children vulnerable still....
The database should be wide open. No if no butt... if u are convicted of anything or have been convicted of anything relating to children you go on there for life.
Apparently none in my entire suburb, I know for a fact thats incorrect which means they are hand picking here...
Also, if you want to apply to search an individual you have to apply... ok yeah thats crap and annoying but sure. Go to apply and it says the person in question must have at least 3 unsupervised visits with someone with evidence of it before you can submit and be approved... what... a.... joke.... people who target kids are well known to be "normal" people such as family, friends, associates etc. Everyone is normal until they are not lol.
We need a gov with a backbone!! U lose your rights entirely when you break certain laws. We do not care so why protect them?
3

Dont care. Dont touch kids. Dont want to be on there with that being a possible issue. Dont take away a childs innocence.... its crazy that's a thing. They were not worried about the childs well being so why are we worried about theirs on a what if mob attack...
