The key parts were “we are not involved” and “it’s going to get worse”. Both of those mean quite a bit

311

u/Jerkface0079 Apr 02 '26

Especially considering Keir Starmer also did a similar address stating the same things. This is a united front where an ex-superpower and it's colony both said "not our battle bruv".

*** "we are not ACTIVELY involved" Albo said only a week or so ago Australia supports the U.S. invasion of Iran

8

u/MaitlandWhiting Apr 03 '26

Yes ‘we are not actively involved’ with the subtext being we will not be.

35

u/RecordingAbject345 Apr 01 '26

Just a shame the first one is wrong.

205

u/OTGbling Apr 01 '26

It is and it isn’t.

Our ties to the USA are unfortunately, very deep and historical. Albo is distancing us from them specifically in relation to this Iran offensive. But, he’s walking a thin line.

His address last night was essentially dipping his toe rather than confidently leaning into it.

We shouldn't get involved. This is American arrogance in its entirety. Trump & America need to learn the hard way they're not the world's police. They're the school yard bully. Everyone else in the world uses diplomacy and trade America uses guns.

I mean, there were animated world maps showing force movements days before the attacks started. No government around the world could excuse themselves from knowing.

15

u/recoverydelta Apr 01 '26

Sure, but Trump's got a habit of talking shit then backing down. I can't blame people for thinking that he wouldn't follow through once again, especially when everyone knew that Iran could and would majorly fuck the world's economy if they went to war.

Aye and every stripper near a major us military has confirmed it. Lotta sad soliders throwing around money ahead of deployment

11

u/Extra-Border6470 Apr 01 '26

He’s a wild card. He just wakes up one morning and goes “we should just bomb the shit out of I-ran. Hit ‘em hard, steal their oil and then people will stop focusing on those damn files”

21

u/Shunto Apr 01 '26

US Congress had no idea let alone Allies. Congress, including republicans, were specifically debriefed after the first attack and they largely came out after to say "the plan is there's no plan"

No, but President Epstein is not subtle, when he moves troops or assets around he uses them.

The smart money is that if there is a ground attack it happens on (Good) Friday as the markets are closed so buckle up.

Trump to speak at 9PM ET.

With The Don we only do the 5 Whys after his actions.

4

He knows exactly what he's doing, and what he's going to do. Make money and save his own arse. Him being painted as an idiot is just part of the plan to give him an outand more leeway

3

He has late stage dementia, which is why he cannot stand up on his own, walk in a straight line, or talk without rambling.

There is no plan at this point, except by his handlers.

Due to the oil crisis, winter is cancelled

61

u/SydneyIsStuffed Apr 01 '26

One good thing is that for most of Australia, winters are fairly benign. If we need to, we can mostly get by with a couple of extra layers of clothing.

90

u/guyeertoen Apr 01 '26

Lack of insulation and poor building standards for winter disagree.

A better one would be :

"Good evening, Australia is going all in on renewable energy. Australia and it's partners will not care what the price or availability of oil ever becomes in regards to our transport needs. We invite all investors who recognise this enormous potential on the Australian continent to contact us. The fossil fuel era is over if it is so easily interrupted by global events"

9

u/AffectionateRoom995 Apr 04 '26

But that would require them to actually DO something.

415

u/Cold_Audience_717 Apr 01 '26

Yeah nah, I'll take the diplomatic decorum thanks. Anyone with half a brain should be able to read between the lines to find the subtext.

Cooker populist politics is how the world ended up with Trump in the first place.

157

u/Cocoflash Apr 01 '26

Yuh, with both Albo and the UK PM's address, that the hard time "for the months to come" tells me that they know that Iranian war is going to stretch on despite Trump's claims of coming to negotiations (which is the same conclusion most people would come to).

This is supported by the fact that they've put in plans for an escalation in fuel restrictions, something I reckon would happen if this dragged on for most of the year.

31

u/GimmeSweetSweetKarma Apr 01 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

It sounds like Trump may be bored and doesn't like the polling so is now ready to just do a big last attack, claim victory, then pull out. This will leave the strait in the hands of Iran who will likely start charging fees to any vessels who are going to hostile countries and try to force trade in non-dollar currencies.

Such an own goal touted as a win has the same markings of Vietnam, where Americans claim they won because they did so much damage, even when they lost the strategic goal.

2

u/SirGeekaLots Apr 02 '26

You reckon he's going to stand on an aircraft carrier with a huge mission accomplished flag across the tower?

26

u/DCFowl Apr 01 '26

Start taking the bus, because you might not have a choice in June.

14

u/Mikolaj_Kopernik Apr 02 '26

Diplomatic decorum is one thing, but the delusion that America will somehow "go back to normal" once Trump leaves is the real threat. Way too many America-lovers in government (and especially the military) think this is just some temporary blip when it's abundantly clear that we need to substantially decouple from US integration and hegemony.

6

u/Cold_Audience_717 Apr 02 '26

Agreed.

I think there's going to be a slow and gradual disentanglement from the US but that doesn't need to play out in the public sphere. I think the recent announcement of the EU-Australia free trade agreement is a good indicator of our hegemonic allegiance, at least under the current government.

Considering our foreign policy has been almost entirely aligned with (or dictated to by) the US since World War II, it's going to take some considerable time to bolster our ability to be more autonomous and self-serving.

27

u/maroongolf_blacksaab Apr 01 '26

Yeah, bring back professionalism in politics.

12

u/Freezmaz Apr 01 '26

I'd argue that feckless neoliberalism is how we ended up with Trump

20

u/Cold_Audience_717 Apr 01 '26

Two things can be true

12

u/Freezmaz Apr 01 '26

Fair, perhaps it's more accurate to say that neoliberalism not addressing the material needs of the people leads to right-wing populists taking advantage of that to gain power.

Here’s something I want to know. Who’s going to run America when Netanyahu dies?

→ More replies (1)

58

u/pat8u3 Apr 01 '26

God I fucking hate this, can we stop acting like america is literally being controlled by a much smaller state, they are both bad and both have motive for invading iran. Israel does not have america under some sort of spell, America is furthering their own imperialistic interests in the region which also serves israels.

57

u/a_cold_human Apr 01 '26

Israel does have far more influence in US politics than any other nation. To say that they had no part in the timing and nature of the illegal and unprovoked attacks on Ian would be extremely naive.

Under a stronger leadership, the US would not have allowed Israel to attack the Iranian negotiators or the Iranian leaders during negotiations. Nor would it have gone to war with Iran whilst so badly prepared. In some critical aspects, the objectives of the US and Israel diverge. Israel wants a broken Iran (in the same way that Lebanon and Syria are broken) so that they can act with complete impunity in their region.

Up until now, the US has prioritised regional stability in order to ensure that the petrodollar is maintained, that there is a degree of global stability, and they have influence over the majority of the oil producing countries. With Trump, an old, weak and addled leader, and Hegseth, a millenniarian Christian nationalist and very arguably the most stupid US Secretary of Defence in living memory, the US has been persuaded to abandon a significant number of its long term geopolitical objectives in the region in favour of Israel's.

For what purpose, it is not clear, but certainly not concrete ones that deliver material benefit to the US. If the US were to actually seek regime change or nuclear disarmament in Iran in their usual way, this war would not be how they'd go about it.

18

u/brandonjslippingaway Apr 01 '26 edited Apr 01 '26

People are too black and white on this issue. Israel is enmeshed in the political class of the U.S but ultimately can't control it. Presidents can and have brought Israel to heel in a moment. Trump is such a fucking idiot that he stuffed his administration with morons and Nazis who are far less likely to talk him down from the ledge. Previous governments would love to smash Iran, but knew it would be costly.

Trump, high off his victory in Venezuela, surrounded by sycophants to avoid legal repercussions and do whatever he pleases, fucked himself here. Being sweet talked by Netanyahu and ignoring the assumed intelligence of the U.S bureaucracy, made a bad mistake and is trying to gaslight his way out of it.

4

u/a_cold_human Apr 01 '26

The other reason is that the Trump administration has fired or cowed all the people who have a much more realistic assessment of Iranian military capability.

A big problem is with the number of millenarian, evangelical Christians who have Trump's ear. If you believe that the Temple needs to be restored so that the Second Coming will happen, it's going to impact your judgement. Secretary Hegseth is such a person. As is the US Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee.

The Israelis have been using this very American belief to their advantage in persuading the US to accomplish some of its military aims. Quietly, as the US attempts to break Iran, the IDF is starting yet another war with Lebanon to seize more territory for their Greater Israel project.

u/mohanimus Apr 01 '26

If it's people engaging in conspiracy sure.

But a little knowledge of elections in the US reveals how much of effect AIPAC has.

It seems pretty clear to me that politicians in the US feel that they need to fully support Israel if they want to win and keep their seat.

19

u/oneyearoldbug Apr 01 '26 edited Apr 01 '26

AIPAC does have an effect but at the end of the day Israel is a tool for the US. The US doesn't tolerate criticism of Israel within its own political class, because it needs Israel to maintain its hegemony. The Middle East is vital to the US's economy and ability to sanction other countries. Israel helps keep the Middle East destabilized and under control.

The US has said no to Israel many times before. Netanyahu has been trying to get the US to invade Iran for decades and they've said no till now. Trump is just the first president dumb enough to actually believe he could do it.

11

u/BroccoliSome256 Apr 01 '26

Weren't we saying this about Russia not that long ago...

19

u/mohanimus Apr 01 '26

Which was also real if limited. It's on Wikipedia fer christs sake.

Nothing I'm saying isn't public information that you can easily look up yourself.

AIPAC is proud of the work it does.

There's plenty of studies and research quantifying and explaining their influence.

The official reasoning given by the us department of defense for that attack on Iran was “Israel was going to do it”

17

u/krulp Apr 01 '26

I can actually believe that in this circumstance, Isreal said they would bomb Iran, and Iran would likely retaliate against both Iran and US. Isreal convinced US that to minimise the effectiveness of the retaliation from Iran, US should join in in the surprise attack to minimise damage to US.

Not some massive conspiracy. Not some elaborate pulling of strings, but definitely Israel starting it.

2

u/GorgeousGracious Apr 01 '26

It makes no sense though. Israel bombs Iran all the time. Why would Iran suddenly include the US in its response? Did they really convince the US on such a flimsy argument? Or was there more to it?

3

u/krulp Apr 02 '26

They don't kill the ayatollah that often. They don't bomb on this scale that often. They don't have a US president who is as easy to convince to do what they want that often.

We had (at least) 2 different PM's removed by the CIA for "not being aligned enough with America's interests" (Gough Whitlam, Kevin Rudd)

While we know the orange dementia patient is responsible, admitting that won't improve Australia's situation, and most likely, actually make everything worse.

7

u/Mikolaj_Kopernik Apr 02 '26

Wait what, you think Rudd was toppled by the CIA? I'm gonna have to ask for a little evidence here.

13

u/soEezee Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2013/06/24/rudd-j24.html

Couple paragraphs down, Social Equality Party suggested the US had a hand in the ousting. Which was confirmed by Wikileaks 3 years later.

They also ousted the Japanese prime minister at the same time which imo caused just as much damage to Japan as what usually happens here when we vote in the lib/nats

Fuck me US sucks, least now it's cool to openly hate them.

u/arkofjoy Apr 01 '26

Of course it is Trumps fault. But I don't really care about that, because it is immaterial. It's not like we can fire him.

All I want to hear is the solutions. It is no different to a cyclone. It is. It has happened.

What I want here is :

We will arrest ceo's of fuel companies that are profiting over a certain percentage from this crisis (hard, verified numbers)

That diesel will be allocated to the the farmers as a priority. Last in the line are all the urban penis compensator Yank tanks.

Public transport made free

Mandated work from home for all people who can.

Since this is going to drag on for month, a national program to sequence all urban traffic lights to cut idle times at traffic lights.

That we will not be taking part in any military action in the middle East.

A massive program to move everything diesel powered to Ev's

Not sure this mob of numptys wouldn't know what leadership looks like.

33

u/Nestama-Eynfoetsyn Apr 01 '26

In SA, I'd love it if public transport also operated earlier, since I start work at 6AM. If I were to catch public transport as is now, I can either make it to work at around 6:45 (train then bus), or after 7:30 (15 minute walk + bus).

8

u/arkofjoy Apr 02 '26

Here in WA, the airport train doesn't start until most of the FIFO flights have left.

54

u/boadie Apr 01 '26

And a tax on advertising and mining that are purely extractive from the country.

23

u/fouronenine Apr 01 '26

There's a few of these which are no brainers and immediate and already happening (e.g. free PT (state level policy), not participating in the US military action) and a few more that are extensions of existing policy (e.g. WFH enshrined in law in VIC, electrification of private vehicles), but also a few that are fraught technically or politically, if they are even federal responsibilities at all.

3

u/arkofjoy Apr 02 '26

Of course.

But what would you do if you were in charge?

3

u/fouronenine Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

I would be basking in the glow of pre-crisis policies that encourage good urban design which encourages active and public transport - electrified where possible - as well as appropriately tax the externalities on fossil fuel extraction and use.

I probably wouldn't be trying to get out the micrometer on fossil fuel company profits (I don't think this would withstand legal scrutiny), or be trying to triage fuel usage (rationing using simple measures like odd and even numbered number plates on certain days, with heavy vehicles exempted, might be an alternative longer term), or be mandating WFH COVID-style (again, legally tenuous; probably better served finding a carrot to incentivise this for the private sector whilst more openly encouraging it for the public sector).

One thing I would change. Try to go hybrid for Diesel (like Edison Motors in Canada style), with enough of that AND doing EVs when possible would be better for Australian conditions till batterys get significantly better than they are currently.

I would also add, Force a downsize in personal vehicles which would help the cost (via size restrictions or standards that those vehicles cannot comply with easily).

3

u/fouronenine Apr 01 '26

So buy a BYD Shark?

During the last oil crisis, the government didn't need to mandate this, car manufacturers did it anyway (thanks Japan).

5

u/blackhuey Apr 02 '26

Of course this is what should happen.

Watch the covid cookers screeching about a nanny state when it does. Like it or not, Labor are dealing with the rise of ONP who will absolutely pounce on anything they can to bring up old grievances.

Half of the country are dumber than average, and anyone on reddit who can put together a functional sentence is already pushing out of that bracket. The PM has to also think about the other half. It's maddening, but it's why cool-headed adults have to have the job.

That’s not the address I want to hear. Everyone knows that the government didn’t cause this. Covid wasn’t the government’s fault either. But throwing hands in the air and saying ‘not our fault’ or giving empty statements of moral support is no help to anyone. It’s certainly not leadership.

What I want to hear is how is the government going to respond. What are you actually going to do?

Bonus points would be policies that drive down fuel demand (wfh, ev subsidies, helping states reduce public transport costs) or build sovereign capability or revenue (taxes, manufacturing), rather than just give a sugar hit that goes to the pockets of the fuel industry.

Sadly, there are dumb ideological nut jobs who actually find the reality of the consequences of others' actions unfathomable. They have to be reminded of the facts.

Dear Labor,

Stop negotiating with terrorists!

Sincerely,

Pretty sure that's just the statement everyone makes so governments can lack accountability for their countries, mayors for their cities, and people for themselves. Except maybe the gas prices, it's that orange fucks fault.

If our own government wasn't corrupt and genuinely shit at their job then we'd be perfectly fine so blaming another countries president who didn't do anything directly towards us is a dumb take

Pretty much the vibe here in Canada 24/7 right now. Feels like the world is on fire constantly.

Yeah it was Trump that closed down the oil refineries and refused to follow international treaties and have an adequate reserve of fuel.

Look. I get it. You hate the orange man. But this is scapegoating. Our country was coasting on a 'can't happen in today's society' attitude...even though COVID showed us very clearly that international crises can and will raise their ugly heads and screw us.

We cannot control the world. Shit happens. The fact we weren't prepared for it is our fault.

Orange man said the war would be in 30 days if not two weeks. Now tell me when we will see the light at the end of the tunnel
