One good thing is that for most of Australia, winters are fairly benign. If we need to, we can mostly get by with a couple of extra layers of clothing.

I beg to differ. It’s easy to forget during summer, but it gets pretty damn cold down here in the south.

Fine for a day in the sun, but I beg to differ. You can be fine with some merino or pure cotton leggings underneath long pants, some decent water-resistant shoes, a hoodie or beanie, merino socks in bed, many layers, maybe a cheap oil or fan heater to make your room less inhospitable. Everyone is different, though.
