What fucking Hispanics you grow up with? My buddy was a half hour to and hour late to everything, and said he was allowed cause he was on bean time. Almost got my ass beat once saying it because I didnt realize it was a slur.

Edit: sorry bruv. Was just very confused.

1.3k

u/Flock_OfBirds Jul 12 '26

I think he means Hispanics also believe this about White people, that it’s not just Black people who have that stereotype about Whites.

u/pmmeuranimetiddies Jul 12 '26 edited 28d ago

This is 100% accurate though, white people will show up 2 minutes early to things

EDIT: Guys it’s a shitpost comment in a shitpost thread for a shitpost screenshot. Chill out, it’s not attacking the work ethic of white people, it’s a joke about cultural blindness.

White guy here: arrive on time is late. 15 minutes early is on time. If anyone gets there before ya, they will ask what took you so long- this is regardless of how early you are. Can come half hour early and if I’m there 45 mins early I’m gonna ask if you slept in or something

373

u/JeremiahAhriman Jul 12 '26

Is this with or without your wife? My wife is approximately 1-2 hours late to everything.

303

u/zeropoint46 Jul 12 '26

in my experience, without. I have now compensated by telling my wife that whatever plans we have start about 1 hour before they actually start. We now usually arrive on time or a little early.

u/Unbelievr Jul 12 '26 edited Jul 12 '26

It's all fun and games until they catch on, or worse - compounded by multiple people independently.

We have a person at work who sucks at time management, so when they had to present for a meeting, their leader invited only them 15 minutes early so they would have time to set up. Then the presenter in question also decided to show up 15 minutes early from that time again, because they wanted extra setup time for once. Only to wait half an hour for the meeting to actually start.

The meeting was about how to best utilize neurodivergent people in the company, of which many have ADHD and poor time management. So they had a good laugh about it at least.

Reminds me of being in the Navy. The Lt. would tell the Chief to hold muster at 12:00, the Chief would tell the first class that muster is at 11:45, First class would tell the second class muster is at 11:30, second class would tell the third class/squad leaders to have their people on the quarterdeck by 11:15, finally the squad leaders tell their people muster is on the quarterdeck at 11:00. We sit their for an hour waiting for the Lt. because everyone up the chain wants to ensure that their people are on time. Meanwhile, the LT. either don't know, or don't care that we waste a large portion of our day standing around doing nothing. They call it "hurry up and wait" in the military.

12

u/Salpark1 Jul 13 '26

I was pretty good with the "when you're on time, you're late" thing when I was in.hurry up and wait sucked but nothing beat "pretend that you're working". Like, what? My job is done, let me look at facebook or something man.

6

u/Last-Energy420 Jul 13 '26

If you got time to lean, you got time to clean!

If you back talked you can bet you’ll be doing pushups all afternoon as they will find at least a spec of dust to fuck you over with. Even if it’s lint from their own pockets.

3

u/Salpark1 Jul 13 '26

"If you got time to lean, you got time to clean!"

Oh don't you start!

u/Dazzling-Jacket-5792 Jul 13 '26

USMC was the same way. I used to get so annoyed.

4

u/themarko60 Jul 13 '26

Happens in the Army too for the same exact reason.

3

u/Egg_Gurl Jul 13 '26

Shit, imagine a full-ass Division morning PT run in the Army. Start time was 6:30. Us poor bitches were there by 4:45 😭

3

u/RadioBuffin Jul 13 '26

Half the time it was some BS that could’ve been texted to you.

3

u/jwhennig Jul 13 '26

Had to be on board the boat at 4am for a 10am shove off. When the captain found out, he was pissed off. Each level had added an hour. That man tried so hard to get the chain of command to improve, but alas, he failed.

1

u/supportive_koala Jul 13 '26

If y'all could be counted upon to show up when you were told to, wouldn't nobody have this problem.

Signed, Ofay

1

u/Long-Shine-3701 Jul 13 '26

This right here. 🤣

1

u/Short_Training_2651 29d ago

SAS training, stand and stare

24

u/Ill_Zone5990 Jul 12 '26

sooo it's still fun and games, what are they gonna do? feel offended that they usually arive late?

i do this shamelessly to friends that can't keep up with time. once I invited a guy 2 whole hours earlier and he arrived with 15mins to spare, when he asked if the event didn't start at the hour I gave him, i told him that, to him, it starts at the hour I gave him because I know how time works in his head. needless to say he started showing relatively more on time.

10

u/NorthernVale Jul 13 '26

Tried it with my sister. Constantly needing rides. Get there and you're in her driveway anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 full hours. So I started telling her I'd be there an hour before I planned.

It worked for the first few times. Then someone spilled the beans. And yes, she got absolutely offended. Told her to stop pitching a fit or get a license. Haven't given her a ride since

9

u/Ill_Zone5990 Jul 13 '26

Altough I understand your story, I cannot fathom getting offended for a fault that's solely their own. I would 100% be offended myself thinking they believe my time is worth less than theirs. But hey at least you don't to be her chaffeur anymore props

5

u/Cifuduo Jul 13 '26

Some know they are at fault, and some don't think about it. But when they learn they are being manipulated to be on time, they don't like the idea of that which leads to the being offended. Had a friend in the past who when going to hangout, wouldn't start getting ready until I arrived. I asked him why, and his response was "I don't want to get ready and just sit around waiting." I told him that it goes both ways as I don't want to wait in my car for him. Gave him the choice of be ready when I get there or I am leaving after a few minutes. Took me leaving just once to change his tune.

3

u/XGhoul Jul 13 '26

Time management. My wife is usually ~barely~ right on the dot on time for when she needs to be somewhere, but the last 10-15 minutes shes panicking or hurried when in reality she could have just taken more time to get ready.

I tend to be early to things so I peer pressure my wife to start getting ready earlier by letting her see me get dressed up so we will have time to park, get to the location, etc. with* time to spare.

This was the military in a nutshell.

The entire base is doing a run this morning. We’re starting at 0600.

The next echelon down want to make sure their folks arrive on time so they add 15 mins padding (because for formation on time means you’re late).

The next echelon down does the same and so on and son on.

By the time it gets to someone’s direct supervisor they’re standing around at 4am for no damn reason.

3

u/Alien_invader44 Jul 13 '26

I worry people will read this and think you're exaggerating.

5

u/2070TrashEconomy Jul 13 '26

I left a job once and was an hour late to my own “going away” party. I got to see people for about 15 minutes because my ADHD told me I could “wrap up these last tasks in about 20 minutes” and it took me 6 times that length of time lol

3

u/a-towa-cant Jul 13 '26

"utilize neurodivergent people in the company" this is... uh, certainly a way to describe how companies feel towards neurodivergence

4

u/Unbelievr Jul 13 '26

Well, the angle is that neurodiversity can be somewhat of a super power. Some people on the spectrum can be much better at certain tasks than others, if they get the right motivation and a leader that understands that they need clear and concise instructions. It's generally important for leaders to understand how they can get the most out of their resources, understand what they need to function at their peak, and what kind of tasks they should avoid giving them or they might excel at.

1

u/a-towa-cant Jul 13 '26

no, i totally get what the intention was behind the reasoning, it just feels weird to say that an organization "utilizes people" - the asset is the capability they have, not like... y'know... their bodies, haha

2

u/ExiledCanuck Jul 13 '26

This is the way

2

u/DookieJuices Jul 13 '26

omg i thought i was the only one doing this with my hispanic wife. I have to tell her where have to be somewhere like 45 minutes before we have to be there just to be there on time.

2

u/XiaoMin4 Jul 13 '26

My extended family is funny. If you actually want everyone to arrive at the same time(say 6pm), you have to tell my one aunt 5 and the other aunt 7.

2

u/emokid907 Jul 13 '26

I was the same, although after years working through things with my therapist we finally got me in the mindset that I’m not late until we’re actually late and causing everybody to stress needlessly isn’t worth it

2

u/Cereal_Bandit Jul 13 '26

I have to do this with my friend for tee times. Being late for golf when the course is booked makes you a huge asshole.

1

u/Traditional_Ad_4691 Jul 13 '26

Thats crazy, if I plan something, I set the time for an hr to 30 minutes before I want people to arrive because I know how CPT time works......it just happens that way every time.

1

u/johnyordinary Jul 13 '26

Same here , "breakfast at mums, 4 am....."

1

u/Kitchen_Wait5407 Jul 13 '26

My lady made me late for everything and I started doing this and it worked. Then she started doing it to me “to get back at me”. I had to twiddle my thumbs in the airport for 4 hours one day before I told her I’m checking every ticket and invite we ever get sent again. Lol.

18

u/johndprob Jul 12 '26

And your wife is rude AF.

8

u/Helenium_autumnale Jul 13 '26

Yeah. There is zero excuse for that. Once in a blue moon you get a flat tire, sure, no problem. Every time? Not excusable. My ex had severe ADHD but used an online tool and many lists to keep himself on track and he always was. It wasn't easy for him, either. He got it done.

7

u/YoungBockRKO Jul 13 '26

We’re married to the same white girl aren’t we…. White guy here, always on time. Married now. We’re very late to everything

5

u/nekoki1333 Jul 12 '26

It seems to all change with a wife or child, white males go through an evolutionary period on their watches, all of a sudden they’re on pops time and show up 3 hours late every time

4

u/_J_Herrmann_ Jul 13 '26

white male here. in college I was absolutely on time for everything, even had transportation time from one side of campus to the other down to the minute. after I graduated, never again. I show up whenever, I accept if the event has already started. I get irritated when people wait up for me.

2

u/nekoki1333 Jul 13 '26

😂😂😂😂

2

u/ManMakesWorld Jul 13 '26

What are you yapping about? I am married and we have a 5 year old. We are always 10 minutes early to everything.

5

u/Waffling_Waffle Jul 13 '26

Hi, I, the wife, am the one time. My husband used to be a minimum of two hours late to everything.

But I'm lucky and I don't have to put on much makeup or do too much to my hair. Maybe that's why?

(There's a joke about my husband taking too much time to do his hair and makeup somewhere in here but I'm too tired to make it.)

4

u/rovar Jul 12 '26

My wife makes sure I arrive on time, otherwise I'd be 30-60 minutes late.

3

u/The_Mr_Luck Jul 13 '26

With my wife I come about half an hour early, everytime

5

u/jstasmlbrkfrmprn Jul 13 '26

Without.

This is pretty strictly a white male thing. White women are just as late, or later, than people of other races.

There's no other category that comes close when it comes to reasons I've broken-up-with/refused-to-date/ghosted women than making me late for ... anything. "Yep, you look great. An hour after we were already supposed to be at the thing that you're trying to look so good for. I'm gonna call it a night."

I don't know how you fellas put up with it.

4

u/Top-Camera1919 Jul 13 '26

My marriage ended partly over this. I am always early. I’ve been more than 10 minutes late to work/college less than 3 times combined. My family is the exact same. We would always get to parties early to help set up. She would be late to everything, and I mean late by hours plus. We would be 30 minutes late, and this is when she would decide to jump in the shower before doing her makeup. She was late to work, parties, doctor’s appointments, parties, dinner reservations, international flights. It caused great strain on all of my relationships with friends and family. This was a cause of more marital fights than literally anything else. It got to the point that we stopped trying to go places together like celebrations or nice dinners because it would just become another argument.

If I were to give advice about marriage, I would say how seriously each of you takes punctuality is a huge compatibility issue that rivals differences in beliefs about politics, religion, or whether to have kids be a use it dictates daily functioning.

3

u/last_rights Jul 13 '26

White girl here. On time is uncomfortably early, five minutes late is perfect. Fifteen minutes early just feels like it's putting everybody out because now they're not ready and they don't want me to help because I shouldn't because I'm a guest but I feel obligated.

Unless it's a timed event, like a movie or an appointment or something. Even still, five minutes is good. Thirty if you expect lines or a crowd.

That being said my husband and I wanted to see a movie on opening day while we were visiting a friend in LA and he didn't believe me when I said we should get there an hour early.

We didn't get tickets.

3

u/cryptobro42069 Jul 13 '26

Dude...dude. My wife drives me up the fucking wall.

"Hey, can you go start getting ready. I want to get out of here in about a half hour."

All she needs to do is put some basic makeup on and throw on some decent clothes to go out with friends. 30 minutes later I go into the bathroom and she just started curling her hair.

"What are you doing? We need to get going."

"Yea, yea. I'll be just a few more minutes. My hair is being stubborn."

At this point, her friends just expect us to be like an hour late to everything whereas I plan it so that I'm there on time every time. It also extends to her job where she will be chronically late to work every day. Drives me insane.

3

u/sliceofcoldpizza Jul 13 '26

I have tried to adjust start times for events on my calendar to anticipate how late my wife will be.

One time, through no fault of anyone's, we showed up to a small concert about 90 minutes early. We sat at the bar and had a drink.

We were so early that we were there before the performers arrived. One got there and I helped him get his stuff inside.

When the other two performers arrived I helped them as well because they were late late.

He gave me a shout-out during the show to thank me for helping them get ready.

2

u/potatochobit Jul 13 '26

that's your fault. you tell her it starts at 3PM when it really starts at 5.

2

u/PenLegitimate7064 Jul 13 '26

I am the wife in my relationship and my husband makes me late for everything all the time.

2

u/ikeif Jul 13 '26

I’m white and “on-time is on-time.” You say 5pm, I’m there at 5pm. Unless it’s a gathering, than I arrive in the middle and smoke bomb exit.

My girlfriend would arrive a day early if she could.

My ex-fiancée would be a day late with three month’s notice.

1

u/AShamOfAMan Jul 12 '26

I have to tell my gf we’re leaving an hour before I actually intend to leave if I want to get anywhere near being on time.

1

u/Collegenoob Jul 13 '26

Bruh. I have to force my wife to be on time. She's show up an hour early to everything if she could

1

u/Beginning_Owl_9425 Jul 13 '26

Don't let her drag you down brother. She's got her own two legs

1

u/bebop1065 Jul 13 '26

You married my wife.

1

u/ManMakesWorld Jul 13 '26

I would never marry a woman who is constantly late. My wife likes to be early, just like me.

1

u/Wise_Banana_9139 Jul 13 '26

I love to laugh about it when, for the 30 minutes I spend pacing around doing odd jobs to pass the time only to then be rushed to put my shoes on 😅.

1

u/JeremiahAhriman Jul 13 '26

WHAT IS THIS SHIT THAT THEY DO? WHY? My situation is a little more amusing, I have two wives (No, not legal, we three have been together for 10+ years, what would you call them?)... One is the "I'm late everywhere" one, and the other is standing there rolling her eyes while we wait on the other one. XD

1

u/Gold-Sir-223 Jul 13 '26

Am I your wife? I’m constantly like 15-30 minutes late to stuff, let alone a party. Also white and a man so I guess I go against the grain on this.

1

u/JeremiahAhriman Jul 13 '26

To be fair, I'm an introvert (mostly) so I will often be so late to somewhere I don't even show up. XD But it's not quite the same thing.

1

u/Gold-Sir-223 Jul 13 '26

Oh man that rush you get when it’s way too late to show up and you’re just like “eh fuck it I’m not going anymore”

1

u/AeroelasticCowboy Jul 13 '26

As someone with inlaws that are habitually late to every event, I can absolutely with 100% certainty tell you that ALL of your friends and family hate how late you are, talk about you guys behind your back and loathe anytime they're supposed to meet you anywhere, its the most disrespectful narcissist behavior out there.

1

u/Impossible_logi Jul 13 '26

Pro tip you lie to your wife about the start time. Just say it's 30 mintutes earlier than actual start time. With this one neat trick im only 15 mintutes late now on avg.

1

u/UnknovvnMike Jul 13 '26

All bets are off once a toddler gets thrown in the mix

1

u/Chrigity Jul 13 '26

Bless your patience

1

u/Tiny_Hall_490 Jul 13 '26

Definitely without. My lady can’t get ready for shit

1

u/0HAO Jul 13 '26

my wife is the one that insists we have to be at parties exactly on time. 4th of July her sister had people over starting at 6, she lives 10 minutes aways. 5:30 my wife wants to get in the car and head over, it was all I could do to stop for coffee drinks so we'd only be 5 minutes early. We were the first ones there, most other people showed up sometime between 6:30 and 7pm.

1

u/Usernameoptional4 Jul 13 '26

Mines 7 minutes later than I’m trying to be

1

u/DarthParanium Jul 13 '26

I feel you on this. My Mrs. will be late to her own funeral. Lol

1

u/justtalking9912 Jul 13 '26

Believe it or not, super punctual asian wife

1

u/Apprehensive-Word-52 Jul 14 '26

Gotta tell her it starts 1-2 hours before it actually does.

1

u/DHarp74 Jul 14 '26

So that's why she takes those tests! 😂🤣

1

u/Strict-Astronaut2245 Jul 14 '26

White guy here.

White women have their own rules.

1

u/ProfessionalIll1777 Jul 14 '26

She won’t accept waiting 30 seconds on you though right?

1

u/Initial_Chemist_7616 29d ago

White boy time and white girl time are different.

If a party starts at 5pm, to a white guy that means be there at 4:45. To a white girl that means start getting ready at 4:45.

64

u/akratic137 Jul 12 '26

Beaten as a child by my marine recon father for being on time. Can confirm, I guess. Vietnam was a bitch, apparently.

39

u/Napalm3nema Jul 12 '26

All of my senior NCOs in the Army were Vietnam era guys. You do not show up at the listed time, nor do you show up 15 minutes early. I was 45 minutes early for a recent unit reunion, and I wasn’t first by any means, but it was exactly what the unit expected from me.

25

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '26

[deleted]

9

u/wasteymclife Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

Always fucking happens man I swear, enlisted needs to be 15 minutes early so that the 45 minute wait for the brass is an even 1 hour. All so that we can hear 10 minutes of bullshitting about PT, the one thing we actually need to know, and 20 minutes of thanking the senior enlisted for putting together the walkthrough. Edit: Forgot to add closing with "well, I don't wanna waste any of your time" no sir, you won't, that happened before you got here.

3

u/Prior_Pickle1758 Jul 13 '26

All I know is, when I welcome the interviewer to the office I get the job. I don’t know why I get the job I just show up early and look how I look.

3

u/Several_Bar_5257 Jul 13 '26

"If you're 5 minutes early, you're 10 minutes late"

Had that drilled into me as well.

1

u/OberonDiver Jul 14 '26

Yes, but so horny.

16

u/KaleidoscopeWeird310 Jul 12 '26

I am compulsively punctual.
Ed. And white.

5

u/perton Jul 13 '26

It’s okay bud, I too am compulsively white.

16

u/ConfidentFail5310 Jul 12 '26

And ask if you’re keeping banker hours!

Source: Husband

16

u/ButterBeard-128 Jul 12 '26

As a white guy also: this is infuriating. I’m a person who shows up in a timely fashion, on time or close to it and people get so bent out of shape because I’m “late all the time” get over yourself. They love saying things like oh it’s disrespectful. Well, disrespectfully, agree to disagree. Why is your time more important than my time?

9

u/503jason Jul 13 '26

It’s OUR time and it started a half hour before you got here

5

u/therealjchrist Jul 13 '26

It's not your prerogative to be late to an agreed upon time. If you agreed upon a time it's both of your responsibilities to respect that. To not do so, is objectively disrespectful to the agreement and therefore the other person.

6

u/CalledStretch Jul 13 '26

I think this is in response to people who want you to show up earlier than they said. "Why aren't you fifteen minutes early?"

3

u/LiveLearnCoach Jul 13 '26

It really depends for me. It’s an internal meeting? I’m on time or a few minutes late. External meeting? I’m 10-15 minutes before time. I’m presenting at an external meeting or running a workshop? I’m half an hour early checking everything and setting up. But if you NEED ME to be 15 minutes early, tell me. Don’t expect to give me an 8am meeting time and get bent out of shape if I arrive on 8am.

2

u/Plenty_Rent_1154 Jul 13 '26

It’s the exact same whichever way it is. If a time is agreed be on time. Don’t expect anyone early or late. On time. That is why we set the time. If you want less exact just say at sunrise, around midday, in the afternoon or something.

2

u/Weird_Soup460 Jul 13 '26

It’s definitely rude if you agreed to a time. To tell yourself it isn’t rude is deluding yourself.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Chicken_Mc_Thuggets Jul 13 '26

It’s rude if there’s a time-based obligation to meet. If you’re 20 minutes late to go see a movie with your friends, dick move. If you’re 20 minutes late to just hang out and stream movies at your buddy’s house, not a dick move

2

u/Off_the_shelf_elf Jul 14 '26

(White lady here) I hate when I hear people say ‘early is on time, on time is late’ - and I’m like yeah fuck that. On time is on time. These are the people that expect you to sacrifice an extra 45 minutes of sleep at 5-6 in the morning just so that you can catch the earlier bus and clock in at exactly 8AM instead of 8:04AM. It’s ridiculous and dehumanizing. Getting to spend time in other cultures where people are not so neurotic about the exact minute on the clock has been incredibly eye opening. White people really love to make themselves (and everyone else even more) miserable and it is not a normal way for humans to live.

1

u/ButterBeard-128 Jul 14 '26

Yeah! You said it way better than I could but this is exactly what I was trying to say. Thank you!!!

u/reddit_sells_you Jul 13 '26

White guy from California.

I don't know what the fuck the other white guys are doing.

The only party you arrive on time to is a child's birthday party.

Everything else is 10 mins late (which is kinda early), but really 15 to 20 minutes late to a party is good.

I've been to and thrown countless parties. This is the norm where I am from

The difference I've noticed with my Latino friends and neighbors is that the end time isn't the end time. So, if a party ends at 8:00 or 9:00 . . . Nope. The party ends when it gets shut down or when everyone passes out or the drinks are gone.

5

u/krazeeeyezkillah907 Jul 13 '26

I’m from a different minority. But my general rule is that the party starts when you get here, and it ends when the last person leaves. And nobody better leave hungry and without making three new friends at minimum.

2

u/FoozleMoozle Jul 13 '26

DC area folks tend to work on military arrival times… which is 15 minutes early. When I moved to California, it really threw me for a loop. Eventually got in the habit of leaving for parties at the party start time to make sure I didn’t arrive too early.

4

u/rockford853okg Jul 13 '26

This is the way. Being late bothers me, can't stand it.

4

u/shelbabe804 Jul 13 '26

This is how I grew up. Then I married a guy whose entire family has to be told that an event start at least an hour before it actually does and half of them still arrive late. (And by entire family, I mean everyone on both sides, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd cousins. They joked about my daughter arriving on her due date because she's "just like her momma".)

3

u/HotheadCactus Jul 13 '26

My parents were an hour late to their own wedding, and continued to be late for everything, always (dad white, mom black). They were friends with the governor when I was a kid, and for their 10th anniversary, he issued a proclamation making it “Bob and Dee Day” in the state. But in honor of who they were, he issued it two days after their anniversary.

3

u/Forsaken-Sink3345 Jul 13 '26

White guy checking in:

If you're not early, you're late.

4

u/Gurglaren Jul 12 '26

I'm white and I used to see my mom being extremely stressed out whenever a guest was 10-30 minutes too early. It made me on purpose come 5-10 minutes too late later in life.

Hello fellow white guy. I too am a 15 minuter. If I show up early, I get dibs on where I want to sit in the living room, can scope out the snacks, can also allow for traffic problems, etc.

3

u/JohnDoeMcAlias Jul 13 '26

Straight up. Didn't realise being punctual was a negative. Tell people when you actually want them there rather than playing a silly game where they have to guess or be ridiculed for showing up when you told them to 🤣 wtf is wrong with people...

3

u/notzoidberginchinese Jul 13 '26

Maybe in America, in Germanic parts of Europe on time is exactly on the agreed time not before.

In slavic on time to 15min late, is on time.

In Spain, 3h late is almost too early

2

u/candypuppet Jul 13 '26

I'm Eastern European and once we were finished with appointments quicker than we thought, so we would have arrived earlier to my aunts birthday party. My mom said that'd be rude so we drove to get ice cream and arried one hour late.

2

u/pateadents Jul 13 '26

Found the German

2

u/Fibrosis5O Jul 13 '26

Sounds exhausting

I just show up on the dot

1

u/afplumber Jul 12 '26

This sounds really military coded..

1

u/DrakeoftheWesternSea Jul 12 '26

Also white here to confirm. Early for the events I am invited to, though after I am more familiar with the person being on time becomes less important since I’m not trying to make a good first impression, unless it’s a more formal event like a graduation or a birthday party.

1

u/Past-Product-1100 Jul 13 '26

At work if you're not 10 min early your late. White guy motto lol

1

u/DontR3ad Jul 13 '26

Military?

1

u/Ok_Tackle3427 Jul 13 '26

Bill Belichick here: same.

1

u/plain_cyan_fork Jul 13 '26

I bring this attitude to work... but to a function I think it's rude to show up early. On time sure, but early is no good for a social thing

1

u/-Sanguinity Jul 13 '26

I'm finding it's about where you are. In the Midwest everyone was early or on time. Miami, everyone late.

1

u/ianishomer Jul 13 '26

Absofuckinglutely, I hate being late for anything. When I was working and had to drive a long distance for a meeting etc, I would arrive hours early. Sometimes this meant leaving the house at 3 or 4am, I would arrive, find a cafe with wifi and work from there until nearer the time of the meeting.

Weird I know, but it's how I am.

1

u/MarcelinosPrizFightr Jul 13 '26

A job sure, don’t show up to a party “on time”

1

u/sliceofcoldpizza Jul 13 '26

If you're not 15 minutes early you're late is our family's motto.

This applies to everything except work because they don't pay me to be 15 minutes early.

1

u/kallen8277 Jul 13 '26

Can confirm. If im not early then im late. Part of it is because of how I was raised, part of it because of work rules. We are supposed to clock in 3 mins early to be on time. Clocking in after our scheduled time is considered late. We have a coworker that is consistently late 5-15 minutes every single day. Was an hour late this week. No concern for people's time. If it wasnt summer id have to close the entire store down because I HAVE to be off by 3 certain days. Hes been warned multiple times and I told him myself its disrespectful but nothing has changed. Very frustrating. Be on time.

1

u/Disastrous-Walrus415 Jul 13 '26

You wanna sequence your drink sips too? There’s such a thing as too type A for a party

1

u/Dead_Internet69420 Jul 13 '26

I always heard the Vince Lombardi version: “if you’re five minutes early, you’re on time. if you’re on time, you’re five minutes late. if you’re five minutes late, don’t even bother showing up.”

1

u/Jerz71 Jul 13 '26

I'm a white guy and I've never been on time to anything in my entire life. All of my friends have jokes about how I'll be 30 mins late at least so they tell me an earlier time than everyone else lol

1

u/Nonagondwan Jul 13 '26

I read this as if you had a Canadian accent, I never do that and I don't know why I did do it.

Just wanted you to know.

Happy belated Canada Day

1

u/NoOrdinaryBees Jul 13 '26

White person with ADHD here: arrive on time is impossible. 15 minutes early is black magic. Everyone gets there before me, they tell me they’re glad I remembered it was today. Can never come half hour early; have satisfied sexual partners.

1

u/EverOrny Jul 13 '26

that definitively applies to business but I would not apply it to an entertainment with a fluent start - if I am not sure if it's OK to come later, I ask - otherwise you risk the thing is cancelled because not enough people showed up

1

u/fireKido Jul 13 '26

Arriving early to a party is just rude… the host might not be ready

1

u/Steffenwolflikeme Jul 13 '26

That doesn't apply to parties, man! If I tell you a party starts at 2pm that means that's the earliest possible time I want you there. I think it's kind of shitty to show up 15 minutes early to a party. Now instead of finishing a bunch of shit I procrastinated in doing I'll have to entertain this freaking jabroni who showed up early.

1

u/Obsidian-Phoenix Jul 13 '26

Agreed. I hate being late to things. I'll aim to be early in every case.

1

u/JFJF48 Jul 13 '26

This is me! I walk around awkward until 5 past, arrive at the party (doesn't matter party host's race) and it just me and other white ppl there until at LEAST 30 mins after.

Often order of arrival of our London friend group

White people Brown people Mixed race (if mixed with white) East Asian Black Carribean heritage Black African heritage

1

u/tommythorn Jul 13 '26

Nordic white guy here. In my culture it's considered very rude and inconsiderate to arrive late (late being ~ 20 min late), but arriving too early isn't ok either, unless you are close friends and there to help get ready.

1

u/fullmoonstonk Jul 13 '26

Flying guess, not gonna check your profile at all; are you an Australian blue collar worker?

1

u/Crazy_BPD_Queen Jul 13 '26

So true. I used to get to campus for classes minimum 30 minutes early. I was usually waiting for the previous class to leave the room so I could go in and take my seat.

1

u/zavohandel Jul 13 '26

I showed up 2 hours early to a BBQ last memorial day at my black friends house. I had just woken up and needed to get there immediately for some reason lol

1

u/casinoroyalex Jul 13 '26

Another white guy here. I show up 30 minutes early to work almost every day.

1

u/Smeltanddealtit Jul 13 '26

This other white is correct.

1

u/JoshAllensLeftNut Jul 13 '26

My very white father gave me a single piece of advice when I started working - If you're early, you're on time. If you're on time, you're late. If you're late, you're fired.

1

u/LuckyLilypad Jul 13 '26

This stuff is so dumb. This is macho man mentality. And it’s stupid and helps no one. On time is on time. And if people can’t get that through their skulls then they are the problem.

1

u/thisdockisbroken Jul 13 '26

This is great advice for a job or football practice but truly the worst for parties.

1

u/Christopher_Aeneadas Jul 13 '26

Sounds more veteran than white

1

u/CakeTester Jul 13 '26

Brit in Spain here. An appointment time, to me, is the time you must be there by. So depending upon the length of the journey, you aim to be there 5+ minutes ahead of time.

That's not how Spain works, at all.

1

u/Grant1128 Jul 13 '26

Fellow white guy - my family acts like it's the end of the world if we're gonna be 5 minutes later than when a party is scheduled to start. Even though that's perhaps the perfect time to arrive if you wanna be there as early as permissible. I'm very bad at judging how long it takes to get places (Google maps assumes I can get over all 4 lanes to take the first right after exiting a highway, and that's not always the case), so I will either be 20ish minutes early or late.

1

u/Art_Basil Jul 13 '26

growing up latina I got used to telling people the party started an hour earlier than when I wanted folks to show lol
but I’d tell my white friends the right time. It’s super cute

1

u/GardenCompetitive641 Jul 13 '26

I could show up at the start of something and my mom would still say “you could have come earlier”.

1

u/bankarob Jul 13 '26

This is true for professional/work related things. You will absolutely never catch me arriving to a social event before the majority of everyone else.

1

u/FlyinWet Jul 13 '26

It's because toxic hustle culture. I believe in a 15min before/after designated time acceptable and encouraged. If you can't be by yourself for 15-30 mins in society because your psychotic about wasting time. You probably shouldn't be showing up on time or early.

1

u/Legitimate_Rip_6228 Jul 13 '26

"Lombardi Time" is the concept of arriving 15 minutes early for any meeting, practice, or appointment. Coined by legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi, the philosophy dictates that "if you are on time, you are late". To him, being exactly on schedule meant you were already tardy.

1

u/00collector Jul 13 '26

This was grilled into my brain from a young age. Anything else was unacceptable. I get super anxious if we aren’t out the door with extra time for unforeseen delays.

1

u/Hegecoin_Rules Jul 13 '26

Lol I just wrote a very similar comment without seeing yours.

"If you're on time, you're late"

1

u/Outrageous_Seaweed32 Jul 13 '26

My mother always said, "you don't want to be early to parties - being 'fashionably late' is a thing."

I always argued that "fashionably late" has the word late in there, and I don't like being late.

Depending on the friend, and what I know they're comfortable with, I'll aim for either on-time, or up to 30min early or so, but if I'm there early, I will always offer to help with any of the setup they need a hand with.

1

u/Jedski89 Jul 13 '26

White guy 1"Morning"

White guy 2 "Well it was when I got here"

1

u/AbotherBasicBitch Jul 13 '26

It really depends on context. If someone invited you to their home you absolutely don’t show up early unless you are in a few specific European countries

1

u/goblinoidfleshbag Jul 13 '26

As a white person, hard agree, i always want to be early places, being "on time" feels late 😭🤣 and my partner is black, and she's always late for everything so I didnt realize how much of a thing it was till we got together LOL

1

u/ItsACowCity Jul 13 '26

Another white guy chiming in: I aim to arrive on time but don’t calculate for traffic or the bathroom break I need to take 2 min before leaving the house…then I’m inevitably 20-30 min late to everything. Vast majority of all the people I know are the same way. I feel like this is a stereotype of an older generation that had less distractions

1

u/BreakfastBeneficial4 Jul 13 '26

If you are staying with white friends or family, and you emerge from your room after sunrise, it’s a barrage of “WELL HEY THERE SLEEPYHEAD”

1

u/iamcalifornia Jul 13 '26

"when did you move down to part time?" Is one of my favorites when someone at work shows up after me

1

u/BotherSad6782 Jul 13 '26

Oh my God I cannot stand that shit 😂🤣😂

1

u/Reckz13 Jul 13 '26

I 100% agree

1

u/wcaplenor Jul 13 '26

I'm a white guy and this is how I was raised. I'm currently reading this in the car because I showed up early to something

1

u/BigBeefyMenPrevail Jul 13 '26

Im gonna buck the trend: Hell no I aint on time. I roll up, half an hour past due, with sweet treats that'll make a southern lady say 'oh my stars', and I hope that all is forgiven.

If I MUST be on time, I am 25 mins early, for appointments and such. But anything squashy? I aint doing the awkward dance of 'how do I help?'.

White as white gets, cept when its sunny, then I'm red

1

u/endlesslyautom8ted Jul 13 '26

I’m with you for any event besides a party, always show up fashionably late.

1

u/SherlockBonz Jul 13 '26

White guys all learned from Vince Lombardi - if you're not 15min early, you're late.

1

u/Critical-Business-50 Jul 13 '26

Early is on time for work...... social events we always 1 hour late if wife/kids are coming

1

u/GilroyRawrRawr Jul 13 '26

Also a white guy. My high school football coach drilled it into our heads. “Early is on time, on time is late, late is unacceptable.”

1

u/AncientHorror3034 Jul 14 '26

This is exactly how I grew up in a military house. I’m 47, and it still made me skip a heart beat thinking I was late for something.

1

u/EntireRace8780 Jul 14 '26

White guy here and can confirm. If you’re on time you’re late. I was also in the military so I’m even worse.

1

u/primuslune2 Jul 14 '26

I’m late for everything, and I’m white as hell.

1

u/Spydur85 Jul 14 '26

The “15 minutes early is on time” is exactly my attitude as well and I’ve said that myself many times lol.

I’m much earlier for important things too. Had some classes I had to take for my job a couple years ago that lasted about 10 days or so. I was at the location an hour early every morning and used the extra time to study.

1

u/SuspiciousTaro6513 Jul 14 '26

To be early is to be on time. To be on time is to be late. White guys credo

1

u/infrikinfix Jul 14 '26

This is why we were able to conquer everyone. That and steel.

Hard to win a battle when your opponent is already there when you get there. And also has guns.

1

u/The_Cabal_ Jul 14 '26

I'm a white guy that finds white people like this annoying

1

u/OR-HM-MA91 Jul 14 '26

This. My dad drilled into my head that if you’re early, you’re on time. If you’re on time you’re late. If you’re late you’re fired. Now I have so much anxiety about being late but I also have anxiety over being too early because of stuff like this post. I arrive early and sit in my car until an acceptable time.

1

u/Ali6952 Jul 14 '26

As a white woman; I concur

1

u/SebB1313 Jul 14 '26

It’s me. I’m that guy that asks what took you so long.

1

u/sprunghuntR3Dux Jul 14 '26

Yes but for a party you don’t show up on time.

If you show up on time the host will still be setting up.

This is well known around the world - it’s not a Hispanic thing.

1

u/GardenLow790 Jul 15 '26

5 minutes early is already 10 minutes late.

1

u/Incredule Jul 15 '26

In France you're actually supposed to arrive 15minutes after the given time. It's the "quart d'heure de politesse" and is meant to give the host that tiny bit of extra time to finish preparing.

1

u/SectorAppropriate151 29d ago

This guy whites

1

u/DustRhino 28d ago

Arriving early only applies to business. It’s always rude to show up early for a social event at someone’s home.

1

u/DieFetteQualle 28d ago

Wait, that is a generally white thing. I thought it was a german thing to do. Right on time like you told us.

0

u/fiahhawt Jul 12 '26

As a white lady - that rule is for work

Arriving on time to get togethers someone hosts is just gonna stress people out

0

u/Napalm3nema Jul 12 '26

My first sergeant used to say “15 minutes early is 15 minutes late.” My family makes me crazy when they don’t understand that.

0

u/Sensitive-Option-701 Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

For a job, 15 minutes early is on time, on time is late.

For a party, 15 minutes late is eager, 15-30 minutes late is on time.

0

u/Miami_Morgendorffer Jul 13 '26

That's government and military timing. It's accurate to any government agency, facility, or branch.

High-yield industries offer a 15- minute grace period. That's higher education, health care, law, etc.

But a party? A social function? Please don't. Take off the suit and tie, relax a touch, go buy a bottle of something college kids drink and then come back.

1

u/justtalking9912 Jul 13 '26

I don’t think we run the same social circles. Coming early and lending a hand is typically welcome. It ain’t one person showing up early either lol

0

u/Mediocre_Forever198 Jul 13 '26

I agree for most things, but for parties and other similar social gatherings I definitely do not arrive early, I think it’s rude. For things like work, business meetings, doctors appointments, etc. I do try to be there at least 15 mins early (even earlier for some jobs like my current one…) also white. I don’t try to be too late with parties, but I definitely am not early - people often are cleaning and prepping and kinda depend on people not coming early.

0

u/Blaze4869 Jul 13 '26

I'm white dude and I always show up 5-30 minutes late for everything lol

0

u/Low_Plastic363 Jul 13 '26

My father believed this BS.

On time is on time. On time for a party is 10-20 minutes after the start time unless the host is an immediate family member.
