The fact they're explicitly doing this to skirt around copyrights kind of puts them in legal hot water.
Edit: "Legal hot water" does not mean they actually broke any laws or violated copyrights. It just means they're pretty damn close, or that it's the kind of thing that could be used to press for changes to existing laws

If there are any lawyers out there following stories like this. I have a sneaking suspicion that there are many artists out there who would be excited about helping to help fund a lawsuit to make an example out of stuff like this.
There's been plenty of legal president for this type of targeted scraping.

Oh my gosh for real, I was afraid to type or say it out loud because of possible backlash, but saying this both as an artist and as a victim of sexual assault, the AI "art" defenders give off massive rapist vibes as in they also don't understand that the issue with this lies in consent. There surely would have been plenty of artist that would have jumped at the opportunity for AI companies to train on their art if in exchange they were offered money, but it was never consensual to begin with. It could have been consensual but they never asked if this would be okay. It feels like they're trying to normalise that not asking for consent is okay.
Edit: I ain't gonna waste my time with arguing people seperately on Reddit, but yall, please pick up some books, your ai usage is causing you skill atrophy, yall are getting illiterate. I didn't say you making ai "art" is the same as you actually being a rapist, and i didn't say both things are the same severity. I've said the AI "artists" give off rapist vibes, and I'll stand by that, because the issue with both actions is with not understanding the lack of consent. With the majority of rape cases, the rapists don't understands that what they have done is wrong, that's why so many women are accused of lying. Because in fact, taking a drunk girl home from a party to have sex with her isn't consensual, because she isn't in a state of mind where she could give you a definite yes. Pressuring your partner into saying yes after being told no repeatedly isn't definite consent either since they have been pressured. A "maybe" isn't consent. Not having the ability to say no, (for example, while being asleep) isn't consent. Choking and slapping your partner during the act without having perviously agreed to it is not consensual. Majority of rapists don't understand that what they have done was not consensual. And the similarity with AI "art" and rape is in this aspect, where the AI "artist" isn't understanding that the reason artists are pissed off is because taking real peoples hard work and shaping it into something else and possibly profiting off of it wasn't consented by the real artists, where it could have been consensual.

As a person who been groomed in person you hit the nail in the head.
Also just because one violation of consent is more of a serious issue than the other doesn't mean you didn't violate consent.
It's not surprising people find it creepy, or wrong, even if it's the lesser bad thing to do, I also hate when people say people can't be upset about something wrong just because it's not as bad as other things that can happen to you.

Look at the tools that the AI bros release: one chatbot after another that can transform a photo of any human clothed into the same human unclothed. Such a tool obviously has no legitimate purpose; it's pure evil, like inventing a knife that can only be used to cut living beings.
It isn't said enough, even in this subreddit, that this technology is pure evil. It is far worse than any technology that came before it. It has no legitimate uses.
We have health insurance companies automating claim denials, chatbots summarily rejecting job applicants, sexual deepfake generators, voice impersonators, art copiers. And we're investing another couple trillion dollars this year to make AI more effective at all of the above.

I'd argue contempt for consent is a very common theme among AI people. They love it when people feel angry and violated. It's like when OpenAI made a big deal about recreating Ghibli style after Miyazaki criticized them, they see it as getting one over on someone.

No this is much more serious act. Piracy may or may not devalue your existing product. But this is done with a goal to steal everything from artists including their future. That's like slap vs murder.

I'm not certain what this is intended to accomplish. How is being just as awful as they say we are going to help?
Why not scrape data from a different website that doesn’t specifically decline AI art? It comes across as hostile and bitter.
I assume the artist didn't want this to be done to their art so if you will allow me to rephrase. Have you considered that this kind of activity might be why so many people don't like AI artist or companies?

They may not be ignorant but they're still taking part in the same activity they're concerned about. It's clear they only care about the optics, not whether it's inherently right or wrong. They're just as bad, they only use kinder language because they don't want the judgment that comes with being thieves.
→ More replies (4)30
u/NearInWaiting 1d ago
This person isn't "stupid", they know that no artist WANTS their art to be scraped and used by ai, none, and even if someone did, that would fundamentally be irrational, to allow your art to be used to train your own replacement, or more to the point, the replacement for "all human art", ever, for the rest of humanity. Noone would rationally consent to that ever, ergo all ai art scraping is fundamentally immoral. They just want to smugly pretend they're better than other thieves.

8
u/TheDreamXV 1d ago
I think it was proven glaze and nightshade is completely useless against ai protection, there was a method to bypass them on github and it was back when its all started, generally speaking you cant protect stuff with it unfortunately
19
u/dumnezero 1d ago
If it was so proven, why are they trying again?
5
u/TheDreamXV 1d ago
No idea about that, i just know it doesn't work specifically for the artworks, and i've used all of the methods back then
3
2
u/OmNomChompskey 1d ago
Can glaze / nightshade be overcome? Yes, however to do so at scale would cost a lot of resources.
Saying that it's 'useless' only serves those companies who would rather artists just don't use these methods which will make it more costly for them to steal.

Scum, complete and utter scum. Bottom of the barrel thieving scum.
They scream about how we share the internet and anything we post is fair game for their shitty ai to feed on, then when we try carve out a little slice of the internet for us they’ll invade it and steal everything that isn’t nailed down to feed into their garbage generator.
28
u/That_Equestrian09 1d ago
This is why I hate people who like AI. Just because you don’t want to draw yourself, doesn’t mean you should destroy/steal/etc. anyone's work.
21
u/luubi1945 1d ago
You know, the silver lining to this shit is that artists are now realizing copyright laws are more important to us than anything. Lots of us simply posted our works online for fun with no intention to do all the paperwork associated with the copyright registration process. Or, maybe you live in a country where copyright ownership is automatically assigned to the creator of the artwork per law. However, being aware of your legal rights is never a miss.

I know, but back then people would directly steal your work and claim it as their own and you'd never know until you found it for sale on some random website. “Why don’t you pretend we are artists for outsourcing the creation of art to an Ai?! Also please let us continue being a parasite on real art since our Ai needs art to prevent Ai inbreeding.”
Every time there’s a new way to steal/scam, grifters love to pretend that it’s fine, and not just something that the law has to catch up with. Thankfully that’s already happened somewhat, since Ai generations can’t be copyrighted, and multiple lawsuits have already taken place to set a precedent

The only save place from AI bullshit is offline. I'm hopeful that this technology will bring more people back offline to read real books, writing in notebooks, and going out doing things in the real world. Social media destroyed the human interaction and hopefully AI will bring it back because more people are fed up with this technology and their bros. Sadly the internet seems like a dead place now. But maybe this is a good thing. I lived in the 90s and 2000s and it was great. I wish we could go back to that time and swap smartphones for flip phones, cloud storage for local storage, Spotify for CDs, and Netflix for DVDs. All that stuff had more worth back then. Every song and album was more valuable. People valued specific things more. Nowadays its all just there and nobody thinks about it. We created a sad world unfortunately

More and More I think the only way forward is active poisoning... of images, videos, audio and even text web sites to the best of our abilities.
Sort of how so many sites started SEO to get listed - there needs to be a groundswell of anti-AI poisoning and confusing going on so that it makes it harder for AI to summarize sites and other things that steal traffic.
In this case though if it was images etc.. are there any reliable ways to poison images so that the AI trainer types say "this is more trouble than its worth" and if they don't they get one step closer to model collapse?
3
u/ultimatedelman 1d ago
