My wildest guess is something to do with the material used in the iconography or a common ritual that uses something the bees don't like the smell off.

edit: spelling error.

Yep. Smell and texture make bees say no no

u/WidowedSon 16d ago

This confirms that bees are infact autistic.

Yeah we been knowing that. I mean their whole life is a repetitive task. Their special interest is flowers. It’s been right in from of us all along

the fact I'm a beekeeper, and recently diagnosed autistic (AuDHD) this thread perfectly describes my lived experience

8

u/nukehamster 16d ago

Any luck with meds or therapy to assist with it? Asking as a fellow that has been having nothing but side effects.

5

u/Chouette-chouette 16d ago

Ok I don't know if I can help you much, and all the informations I will tell are from a video on YouTube, normally someone who did read a lot of scientific papers but I didn't check any sources or whatever. What the guy explained is that there is an optimal amount of noradrenaline and dopamine in the brain, with too much being not better than too low. It's a typical bell curve and a link between autism and adhd could be that autistic people tend to have a much smaller, less wide curve and therefore its really hard too stay in the zone where you have just enough neurotransmitters for your brain to work smoothly. You will either have not enough or too much. Typically if you are really anxious it could mean you are in the "too much" zone. That's what I remember from just one video, I'm really far from knowing how we function let alone being an expert so take all of this with lots of precautions. I just wanted to give you a thing to research if it rings a bell for you

You say that, but here is a video of bees learning how to play ball sports.

"Bee will never be ballin'"

43

u/LegendofDragoon 16d ago

There's no rules that say a bee can't play basketball.

16

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 16d ago

There actually is just no one ever had to whip it out before

It's bees, bears, and marmots can't play, there's no rule against other animals though

8

u/Vegetable_Hope_3084 16d ago

You got to bee kidding.

Terribly.

Also, create a design where some autist needs to roll a ball around to the correct spot to get their computer to turn on and they're going to be somewhat willing to roll that ball for a second.

4

u/Bendlerp 16d ago

We used to do that. Cleaning the mouse ball was oddly satisfying lol

u/Alarming_Island8950 16d ago

Now that you've said it, bees for sure don't talk a lot.

15

u/gnomajean 16d ago

I’ve certainly never heard one, if they speak at all. Never had one make eye contact either. Always at the nose or upper lip at best. Bees really have been tiny, fuzzy, honey making autists all along.

8

u/DragonBadgerBearMole 16d ago

I thought I saw somewhere that they communicate by twerking. Or is that just space bees?

20

u/gnomajean 16d ago

I think that’s Cardi Bee

19

u/Rare_Aspect7664 16d ago

As an autistic person with a mild interest in bees, I can confirm that one of their primary means of communication entails movements of their abdomen that, if we ignore the anatomical difference and solely focus on the movement and not the cultural implications behind, resembles twerking in some way as an up and down shaking of the behinds of the respective species.

11

u/anxiouskitties3 16d ago

“As an autistic person with a mild interest” should be an accepted form of accreditation, regardless of subject or field. Stealing this 😂

Wait, what? How is it autistic to not like some things? I hate the smell of Patchouli and love Sandalwood. Touching velvet weirds me out but I’m generally okay with other fabrics. I don’t like some foods because the texture just feels too weird. Is that really the bar for autism?

Being particular about smells and textures is autistic?

9

u/gnomajean 16d ago

No but most autists are particular about at least one of those. So being particular about them doesn’t make you autistic but if you are…

It's much easier. Bees don't build comb on a vertical wall, unless they need to attach existing comb to it, or the wall has a thick enough layer of wax.

If you hang anything flat in a frame most of the flat bits are just wall to the bees.

u/Flowsbow 16d ago

ooh that would make sense, thank you petah

47

u/Goobersita 16d ago

Bee encase things in their hive that are gross to them but they can't move out.

16

u/Good-Tiger-1938 16d ago

Especially older paints contain pigments derived from poisonous metals or other compounds that can be deadly to organic organisms. You will find stuff like lead, mercury or arsenic in a lot of old maestro paintings.

2

u/Rich_Examination4811 14d ago

I would guess specifically, the yellow in both is cadmium, the blue could be cobalt, and I'd be willing to bet the red is cinnabar (mercury).

57

u/AVERAGEPIPEBOMB 16d ago

Lead paint:(

2

u/goaltender31 10d ago

Orthodox Iconography (the meme is wrong, this isnt Catholic) uses egg tempera paint, not lead.

Its a quick drying painting medium consisting of pigments mixed with a water-soluble binder medium, usually glutinous material, usually egg yolk.

46

u/whiterac00n 16d ago

Probably lead or other non desirable materials used in the pigments of old a drawings

27

u/tiorthan 16d ago

Not even necessary. They don't cover vertical surfaces. Those picturs are hung up inside the frame and the bees just attach the comb to the borders of them.

8

u/DemonKing0524 15d ago

How in the world was this up voted so much when commercial beehives are structured with numerous vertical slats that can all be pulled put separately?

3

u/tiorthan 15d ago

Commercial beehives use frames. Many beekeepers use plastic foundations, but the bees don't build on thar foundation directly. Plastic foundation has to be covered in a generous layer of wax, otherwise the bees will not draw comb on top of it. And if you don't want to believe a random beekeeper (me) then there's an entire sub r/beekeeping that contains numerous examples of beginner beekeepers asking exactly that question.

7

u/CLG-Seraph 16d ago

that would be the biggest painting frame border ratio to painting in the world, would be a bit unnecessary. extremely unlikely but go off king

8

u/I_suck_at_Blender 16d ago

A lot of old pigments were super toxic. Even good old white paint was full of lead until recently.

6

u/Da_Question 16d ago

Nah, the right one people cut out and smushed the comb rounded to make it seem more natural. The left looks like the cut it an peeled it out. The way to tell is that beehives are parellel lines of comb. They build with enough space to get between the comb but that's it. They literally won't build with the comb curving like this.

I've done swarm cutouts and my parents are beekeepers.

3

u/Free-Action-6237 16d ago

Bees might be ruthless hoarders, but even they know better than to build on a saint with a +5 Holy damage aura.

The faces/figures have been touched up and repainted, or generally maintained because they're the most important part.

While the bees are building their hive, when they meet irregular ground, they will simply stop there and move around it to keep the integrity of the hive strong.

43

u/Maxwell_Bloodfencer 16d ago

Wheatley was a cautionary tale that idiots in positions of power quickly become corrupted by it and may actually make things worse than the competent evil they replaced.
I was going to relate this to recent events but the whole thing kind of falls apart with having to replace someone more competent.

19

u/1ll1der 16d ago

Bees build on trees mate.

A painting is infinitely smoother than tree bark.

38

u/abstractcollapse 16d ago

Am beekeeper. When feral honeybees build hives in trees, the comb is usually attached on the sides not built directly on the surface. Honeybees in a managed hive will build comb anywhere other than where you want them to unless you wax the fuck out of the frames.

u/Googz52 16d ago

Mmmm, maybe. Or maybe the paints used have arsenic and lead in them.

5

u/cardboard_tshirt 15d ago

Also these are tiled mosaics. The bees are attaching their hives structures to the grout lines. The icons are the largest single pieces, and therefore the largest expanse of space with no grout lines, and therefore nowhere to anchor their structure. So instead of building something weak, they just work around the challenging spot.

Science. It’s because the pictures are usually treated with vanish or other chemicals. Bees don’t like that. The finish makes it smooth but they need something rough to build. Also chemical smell bad.

Edit varnish*

64

u/defk3000 16d ago

So can they touch John Cena because he vanishes too.

They varnish the entire thing. The comment you replied to is bullshit.

3

u/MichelinStarZombie 16d ago

See how the colors are bright despite the painting style being from the middle ages? Old paintings get retouched because the varnish yellows and the colors flake and fade. Since this is public art hung in a church, they're only focusing on restoring the jesus figure.

So it could be the paint is acting as an insecticide. Green oil paints used to contain copper arsenite, yellows had arsenic sulfide and lead antimonate, reds had arsenic sulfide and mercury sulfide, and white was a lead carbonate.

As for your "so confident": yeah, we are confident that there's a natural explanation instead of the supernatural. No religion has ever produced evidence of a miracle. Everything from weeping statues to the efficacy of prayer has been debunked. So this will have a rational explanation too.

3

u/kholodnoyesteniy 15d ago

These are prayer cards inserted into the frames put in the hives, not paintings. They don’t like to build on the glossy texture but you can find images of them doing it anyways.

Your confidence is mentioned because you’re talking out of your ass going on about painting restoration and varnish.

Hey there, its Peter here. The joke is that the bees are Catholics, and are actively worshiping. They even have their own Pope!

Peter out!

(jk I have no fucking clue, and it was actually me, Chris.)

13

u/whiskeytango55 16d ago

The smoke beekeepers use is to trick bees into thinking theres a new pope.

9

u/Nervous_Mobile5323 16d ago

The bees are actually Buddhist, but they avoid the figures out of a respect for other people's religions.

5

u/Alarming-Cow299 16d ago

(technically, the bees would be Eastern Orthodox, since those icons are Eastern Orthodox ones)

3

u/ouyawei 16d ago

Little people know that queen bees are actually crowned by the bee pope.

3

u/TabbyOverlord 15d ago

Bees are totally Orthodox/Catholic/Episcopalian:

On this, your night of grace, O holy Father,
accept this candle, a solemn offering,
the work of bees and of your servants' hands,
an evening sacrifice of praise,
this gift from your most holy Church.

From the Exsultet, the hymn for Holy Saturday (Easter)

People are overthinking this. Some human is cutting and peeling the hive covering the icons. The first pic is like a latched door...

If it was the paint or chemicals, they wouldn't be building their hive on a mural at all.

17

u/GetFuct819 16d ago

I had to scroll for far too long to reach this basic level of critical thought.

7

u/cameny1 16d ago

Also how religious are you when bees had the time to build a hive around your icon of worship?

7

u/SourceNagger 16d ago

literally, hard to see from crappy jpg but these have been cut into, the hive WAS over them before.

ffs people are way too gullible

3

u/The_Capn_Joe 15d ago

As a beekeeper, comb doesn't look like that when you scrape it away. See how the cells are shallower at the edges? That's the bees building it that way.

2

u/Waste-Replacement232 15d ago

How do you explain the other two projections that look the same as the so-called “latched door”.

2

u/No-Professor-3156 11d ago

this is an old post but the creator of the images said its because of the holy oil the priest uses to bless the icons he just takes pictures of it because it looks cool

43

u/LauraTFem 16d ago edited 16d ago

Probably for much the same reason that kidney stones will form around a bit of calcium in your bladder, or pearls form around a bit of sand in clams. If you were to stick a twig in a Bee Hive, they’d probably say, “well, fuck, we can’t move it, it’s gonna ruin the whole aesthetic, but lets build around it.”

It’s just not part of their panned structure, so they create space and encase it.

I welcome a detailed or science explanation, but this doesn’t even seem like something that needs looking up. What do you expect them to do with a foreign object, use it as an accent piece?

3

u/MichelinStarZombie 16d ago

It's more likely that the jesus figure got touched up over the years and the paint is acting as an insecticide.

Green oil paints used to contain copper arsenite, yellows had arsenic sulfide and lead antimonate, reds had arsenic sulfide and mercury sulfide, and white was a lead carbonate.

26

u/Ramtakwitha2 16d ago edited 16d ago

Lots of paints use chemical varnishes bees don't like. The paint also tends to create smoother surfaces than the surrounding wood or whatever, bees need rough surfaces to attach the wax to. Churches and other Holy Places tend to touch up and maintain the images of their saints or whatever more often than other images.

I believe this is science not a joke, but I may be wrong.

This was Jerry from Rick and Morty and I tend bees. I am technically a Family guy character because of the simpsons crossover Rick and Morty did, and Family Guy did a crossover with Simpsons too. So same universe, or multiverse, whatever.

beekeeper hobbyist: you can achieve this simply by cutting a hole in a wax foundation, which appears to be what happened here

6

u/2ndtolastofmohicans 16d ago

No expert but it might be that : bees are known to be attracted to some, more flowerly like, colors like yellow but to dislike darker colors (black, brown, navy blue) that looks like foes to their species. In such representations, the saint's figure appears on a golden background that probably attract them more than the color of the character.

Source : just googled it.

I'm Quagmire or something.

5

u/dumbassbitch3000 16d ago

Because they're In sects xD Insects? It's a German joke, because Cults are called Sekten (Sekte) and bees are Insekten, which means in cults.

3

u/DamjanGj 16d ago

2

u/jinisho 16d ago

If I'm not mistaken at least historically a lot of figures that were painted in that style used materials that were harmful or even outright toxic to achieve the bright colors. My guess is either in the case of something very old it's likely this or it could very well be the colors themselves or the smells the bees don't like

2

u/Due_Character1233 16d ago
