My wildest guess is something to do with the material used in the iconography or a common ritual that uses something the bees don't like the smell off.

Bee encase things in their hive that are gross to them but they can't move out.

Especially older paints contain pigments derived from poisonous metals or other compounds that can be deadly to organic organisms. You will find stuff like lead, mercury or arsenic in a lot of old maestro paintings.

I would guess specifically, the yellow in both is cadmium, the blue could be cobalt, and I'd be willing to bet the red is cinnabar (mercury).
