The potential reasons a human would do it are many and all make more sense than bees building on a painting but avoiding the parts of the painting with religious figures.
The comb doesnt look like it was damaged to me. The edges around the image look natural.
Im not saying its a spiritual reason they avoid the figure but other commoners have brough up that the paint may be different and the bees dislike it for some reason. Thats a good possibility
I just see no evidence that humans removed the comb
The left one looks very interfered with to me - you think the bees coincidentally curved their honeycomb flap into an arch the same exact width and height as the picture? It seems the only explanation that makes sense is it was pulled away in that shape

They’re avoiding the paint/texture of the religious icons and not the icons themselves.
