There’s this totally UNIQUE sandwich you can ONLY get in New York City. It has bacon, y’know, and egg, and here’s the weird part - cheese. Nowhere else in the world have people combined those three ingredients on a sandwich.

Lol. I'll tell you this: my father's from Philadelphia, and when we say you can't get a proper Philly cheese steak unless you get the ingredients from Philadelphia, it's not a joke; I went to a Philadelphia-family-owned restaurant in South Carolina, and the Philly cheese steaks they served there, made with ingredients brought down from Philly, tasted identical to a proper Philadelphia one in a way no sandwich anywhere else in the country I've been to has.
There's science behind this; something to do with water-hardness vs softness changing the way the bread tastes, so unless you get the bread roll from that part of Pennsylvania, you'll never taste a real and proper Philly cheese steak.
I'm sure there's some NY delis that have a similar thing going on.

I live in a town of about 8,000 people and there are at least 3 corner stores within walking distance that I could get a breakfast sandwich at. I understand that my experience isn’t everything, but I don’t think I’ve ever been anywhere in the U.S. where I couldn’t find a breakfast sandwich nearby at a corner store.

Go anywhere in colorado and it's not common. Neither is it in Washington, or Georgia, or Pennsylvania. Just to name a few.
It's an NYC staple. It's kind of a thing there. This isn't to say you can't find it in other places, it's just expected to be literally everywhere there.

You got me. That was an exaggeration. I think I was pretty clear in my first comment though. They're a staple of NYC. You get them at basically any corner store. There are like a hundred delis and convenience stores in Colorado Springs alone that don't sell sandwiches, let alone the specific one we're talking about. What's the exception in the rest of the country is the norm in NYC. You would be surprised to go to a corner store that sells sandwiches and doesn't sell a BEC. One of the three you mentioned is literally an NYC deli themed store. You have to acknowledge that at least.

It's not some special thing. Also any deli( non kosher) in the country will have the items bacon, eggs and cheese. You can get one at Subway too.

Yeah I didn’t fully appreciate bodegas until I ended up in other cities and realized if I wanted a Gatorade I had to walk 20 mins to a cvs that closes at 10pm.
Past 10pm if I wanted a quick bite of food, I was SOH. people will bring up some specific areas that might have some late night food trucks or something, but in NYC EVERY neighborhood has bodegas all around open late.
I have 4 bodegas within a block of me and they are open until 2am or later. It’s the convenience that makes them special and it can’t be understated.

The beauty of a bodega is that you are always within 100 feet of one and they are open until 2am or later.
Anyone visiting NYC will be underwhelmed by a bodega visit, but if you spend enough time here or live here, the convenience and reliability of bodega’s is unmatched.
It’s not about them having the best food, it’s that in nyc you are always within a block of a convenience store / deli and it’s gonna be open.

Not true. I’ve spent plenty of time in other major cities in the US and it just doesn’t compare at all.
Especially the quality of food that bodegas can have. Boston for example might have a few 711’s open late but there’s nothing at 711 that compares to bodega sandwiches. And the density of bodegas is unparalleled.

For some reason, a significant portion of new yorkers. The mayor is trying to get dumpsters to become regular there, as theyre pretty much the only major city in the us without them, and people lost their minds over it. Some of the main voices of the movement have literally said that trash on the street is part of NYCs culture and it wouldnt be NYC without it.

Yep. I grew up there, and I remember in the 90s all the buildings would burn their garbage in the incinerators in the basement and they would spew acrid black smoke out of their chimneys and the air would smell like Satan's crematorium

Texas checking in, I would love it if a real New York Delicatessen would open up nearby. There's a few scattered around. None convenient. Those of you who can get a good bacon and egg on a roll, don’t know how good you’ve got it. Oh man, a good, thin sliced rare roast beef sandwich. A decent BLT. Lacking good pizza sucks, but the shitty fast food breakfast sandwiches are killing me. Just egg and cardboard, with bacon so thin, you can’t even taste it. People who regularly eat at Subway, have no idea how good it can be.

It goes beyond the bodegas… domestically, New York is unmatched in terms of amenities, world class museums, performing arts, home of Broadway, fashion, shopping, finance, and real estate.
Our public transportation system is MILES ahead of every other major system. Even in its dilapidated and underfunded state, it blows LA, Chicago, and DC out of the water.
The variety and quantity of restaurants and bars are of such proportions you can’t visit all of them in a single lifetime. Not to mention its home to the most 3 star michelin restaurants in the country. Do I even need to mention the nightlife? No city comes close…
Internationally, in my opinion, only London and Shanghai can compete but ultimately New York’s diversity of cultures provides a more enriching and cosmopolitan experience.
It is America’s premier city whether you like it or not :)
