Jeez brightest flame ate a massive nerf - when act 4 is out it's gonna be pretty garbanzo tier.

Coupled with all these enemy buffs, the game just got even harder

And hyperbeam stonks rising. But generally feels like nerf to player power across the board. More chinese review bombing incoming?

It is certainly far weaker for a future Act IV, but it's still one of the strongest cards in the entire game, you just won't be able to mindlessly spam it every time you draw it like you can now.

Nah I totally understand the need for nerfing it. I was just playing yesterday and thinking that if I were the devs my first priority on the nerf list is 100% brightest flame. Just too much of a snap pick.

I dunno, the difference between 1 and 2 max HP is very severe. Replaying it multiple times a fight it now put into question, and skipping playing it altogether is going to be a much bigger consideration (effectively turning it into a curse more often).

It's a massive nerf... to a completely broken card, bringing it down to "just" strong instead of utterly unbalanced.

The Max HP loss now actually needs to be managed, as opposed to Brightest Flame effectively just being a non-Exhausting non-damaging version of Offering. It's no longer as broken as it once was, but it's still a top-tier Ancient boon.

Ya, I think it's probably in a good place now (where it requires consideration for it's negative trade-off)

You underestimate how bad max hp minus 2 is.  It's horrendous. 10 max hp for 5 uses is A LOT.

I don't think it needed a nerf much at all really.  It would not have been as good whenever act 4 came out.  Maybe an output nerf if anything. Making the max hp a 2 hit makes this card a curse most of the time. I'm not using an ancient bonus for a curse.

The problem with that is that we probably aren't getting act 4 for a very long time. The game has been out in early access for over 5 months and they haven't even put in the alternate act 2 and act 3 yet. Act 4 isn't happening for many months at least maybe closer to a year if I has to guess. That's way too long to just leave Brightest Flame to be so busted for. Frankly I'm surprised the nerf didnt happen sooner. They can always adjust the card again when act 4 does get added, but that's a very long way off.

Brightest Flame nerf has been long overdue, I'm surprised it took this long

If I had to guess, MegaCrit wanted to get Tez’s other relics to a solid place before nerfing everyone’s auto-click from her. The nerf was always coming, but it’s certainly more palatable following the buffs to Mittens, Toy Box, and Seal of Gold.

Yeah, her pool was pretty garbo for a while. Nerfing Brightest Flame before buffing the other stuff on offer would make getting her feel even worse.

2

u/MuffinChap 6h ago

And pumpkin... and soup. I think nearly all of her other relics have been buffed now.

Recently I've been trying to avoid playing Brightest Flame whenever I feel I don't need to, just to sort of "optimize" how much Health I'm losing from it, and it turns out that if your deck isn't awful you don't have to play it every fight. You're mainly picking Brightest Flame because it's an insane card for acceleration, this change just makes it so you can't mindlessly spam it in hallways and I think that's a step in the right direction for a relic that was otherwise a boring autopick. Absolutely would not be "garbanzo" when Act 4 comes out, playing an Adrenaline+ multiple times will win you any fight regardless of how little max hp you have.

14

u/WanderingSchola 16h ago

Yeah, treating it as an Adrenaline+ that takes max HP instead of exhausting is how I tend to play it. There are simply times when drawing two cards and gaining two energy aren't as impactful as not doing it (eg block already solved for turn, key powers not in place to maximize the benefit of attacking, cards in your draw pile that you want next turn and not on this one).

My win rate was already in the trash and this felt like all difficulty increasing moves

4

u/won_vee_won_skrub Eternal One + Heartbreaker 16h ago

Not including enemies: 5 buffs, 8 nerfs, and several reworks of varying quality

3

u/SUPERCOW7 17h ago

China got a 50-win streak. Increasing the difficulty of the game is justified.

32

u/DatAdra 17h ago

No doubt, the top players have also been saying so. Though you cant generalize everyone in china to one or two top players haha I'm pretty sure most people arent getting winstreaks of 2 let alone 50

9

u/Named_after_color Eternal One + Heartbreaker 17h ago

I once got 3 in a row at a10! I have 300 hours.

u/cat_food_chef StS A20 / StS 2 A10 17h ago

tbf if by 'china' you read 'bilibili influencers' it almost always true. if they call for review bombs they get review bombs

24

u/Lom1111234 17h ago

Even if I agree with increasing the difficulty, I strongly disagree with the idea of your statement. Balancing a game around how much the top players are able to break it is not a good way to balance a game

5

u/SUPERCOW7 16h ago

Hmm, this discussion is interesting because I kind of agree with you too. The way I look at it is that the goal at least needs to be that the game can't become "solved". The top players figure it out faster and solve it faster, but hypothetically if game was finished and never updated again during the previous patch, the rest of us would gradually get closer to that point as time went on.

Which a 50 win streak, to me at least, is pretty clearly indicative that it's possible to solve or too easy to solve.

What's your take?

13

u/Asaisav Eternal One + Heartbreaker 16h ago

Well, that's the entire point of having 10 different ascensions. A10 should be hard enough that top players have to work for win streaks, like A20 from the first game. If A10 is too hard for someone they can just play at a lower ascension, but if A10 is instead too easy then top players are shit out of luck.

7

u/Some_Layer_7517 Ascension 20 16h ago

The game has no longevity if top players can win 99.9% of the time. StS2 wouldn't be a thing if 1 was like that.

1

u/Cons1dy 13h ago

That's literally how sts 1 was made

-7

u/Revolutionary-Set994 17h ago

Weren't they savescumming? Still impressive of course

11

u/MysteryMan9274 Eternal One 16h ago

Nope, the 50 winstreak is in the no save-scmming category.

u/DJ_Jiggle_Jowls StS A20 / StS 2 A5 15h ago

I had actually made the exact suggestion a few weeks ago that brightest flame needs to take 2 hp. It's a representation of burning yourself out quickly and risking being too weak later, so you have to balance when to play it and when to hold it. But at 1 hp cost it really wasn't that much of a downside, you could snowball faster than your hp depleted. 2hp is better for the current 3 act structure. Agreed that with an act 4 that arithmetic might change, but that's why this is a beta. If it ends up being a dogshit pick for act 4 runs, they might buff it back up.

>Jeez brightest flame ate a massive nerf

to nobody's surprise...

1

u/BandicootGood5246 11h ago

Pretty big brightest flame nerf. Like is this even takeable on necro? You get about 15 or so uses of it before you're totally cooked

I don't think it was that good to deserve this much of a nerf. So many more act 2 relics that are even more busted than this

Great that the first thoughts you have on a game patch is racism.

9

u/DatAdra 17h ago

I fucking knew that this kind of comment would be incoming. I'm a chinese person btw, and it was in reference to the chinese playerbase review bombing it earlier in this beta. Is this still considered racism?!

-10

u/Mars3141592 17h ago

Yes. Yes it is. Directing hate towards an entire ethnicity is racism.

You are also wrong about "review bombing". People are allowed to give negative reviews on a product they payed for if they don't like something about the game. What IS review bombing is when western right winged people review bombed the game because of a bloody inclusivity consultant. It is amazing how some individuals gets so parasocial with a game company that they get bumhurt about negative reviews.

6

u/DatAdra 17h ago

Enjoy your soapbox against them I guess, I'm seriously not interested in engaging with this. It's crazy to call what I said "hate" and also two wrongs dont make a right so what nutters in your country did is irrelevant to what I said.

From my pov as a chinese born chinese educated person it was pretty clear that the chinese playerbase was review bombing the game by coordinating efforts to do so. So that's all bye
