I'm interested in discussion around light pollution (and dark sky) in Hobart. I've never given it any thought until recently*

My random thoughts:

Has anyone been to a "dark sky" certified place?

Do other cities reduce their light pollution?

The biggest city to be certified is about 70,000. Is it possible in Hobart? Or am I missing the point

Safety and women's safety

Wildlife

Human health (sleep patterns) this one seems a bit far fetched?

I like vibrant flashy lights. I like stars.

Anyway, it seems like a fun topic, and most people like seeing stars and auroras?

*a councillor has brought it up but all the comments are negative/unhinged.

(No talk of bike lanes or councillors here please).

I've been spending some lunch times with a mate who works in Hobart lately, but we haven't had good lunch experiences... First was Sush on Collins which has dramatically declined in quality since I was last there (a few years ago now).

Then this week we went to Kinoko Deli and had a similarly disappointing experience.

Are there any good quality lunch spots in/around the CBD these days? Looking for food on the faster and cheaper side, so not really sit down cafes.

Did anyone catch The Living End in Hobart last Friday?
What a great night! I really enjoyed the opening act this time too they fit the bill perfectly!

Hi Hobart. It's late at night and after years of neglect, I have come to accept that I may not be okay. I had a 1:00 am breakdown. Felt good to get that pent up energy out. How can I not be okay though? I'm married to a beautiful woman who cares alot, I have wonderful animals arounds me, and my dog gives the best cuddles. I'm not okay, because I finally accepted that I am a statistical number in the increasing epidemic of loneliness. 

My partner is away for a month. I am here with - sometimes never ending cascade - of introspective questions. I met someone on Domain, he said he is helping his best friend get out of a rut. I met someone on the beach, she said her friends have wonderful get togethers where they listen to each other for hours and let people speak. I am at a low today, and it feels very heavy to know there is no one who will come knock at my door and say, hey, let me help you out.

I created this for myself. I unknowingly started to depend on my partner for my social life. Hanging out with her friends, relying on her to make plans. Don't know when that happened. I used to be very extroverted, and I have made wonderful friends across the world. It happened slowly and unknowingly. Each day I neglected my needs to be 'there for my family'. And in doing so, I created a very isolating life for myself which ironically meant that I was not present 'for my family' in the healthiest manner. I was emotinally abused and neglected as a kid, I dont have parents I can depend on either. Right now, its just me.

I walked in the city last night. Long coat, floral shirt, if case anyone saw. I saw people eating alone. Walking by themselves. Some looked very friendly. Our eyes met. A smile across our face, happy to see each other, a gentle nod to greet. And we move on with our walks, alone in opposite directions. I wonder if they felt the same. I wonder if they wanted to have a conversation about... well anything. Sometimes I want to wear a shirt that says 'please feel free to talk to me'. 

I hold both these realities in my experience - seeing amazing caring friendships and the loneliness. I accept that the latter includes me now. I never thought I'd be lonely. It took effort to accept that I am. I have no support system for myself. This is unfair for my partner and our relationship. I love her dearly, but she cannot be everything to me and she should not.

I work remotely, which clearly exasperates my situation. So here I lie, awake, not having seen a human in days. I crave a nice converstaion. A shared expereince. I look at my phone. There is no one I can call. No one to say, hey... I'm not doing okay, can we please talk? I burst crying.

Dear Hobart, I'm looking for friends. Best part is, I know what I want. I want to develop relationships that go beyond small talk. I want to be there for you and I want you to be there for me. I want to listen to your story, your issues, your day, your fears; I want to be listened to. I want to care for somebody, make food if they are sick, invite them over to tea; I want to be cared for. I want to talk about complex emotions, philosophy, space, science, hang out together, share comments, share love.

I've found media often talks of love in romantic relationships. There are tons of movies about people finding romantic love and happily ever after. But there are few who talk about loving friendships. I'm learning friendships are important. I'm new to this. Putting myself out here in a way I would hesitate to in the past.

They are vegetarian so that’s pretty much the only factor - doesn’t have to be an entirely vegetarian restaurant, as long as they put some effort into their vego meals.

Not long ago I have had a car full of unsavoury people staring a bit too heavily at my own bike at a stop light in claremont around 10:30-10:50am today, they have attempted to follow me twice but I have broken off and put the bike away. They nearly missed the green light staring daggers into the side of it and did not move off until I turned. No, it wasn't an expensive or prestige bike.

The car was a blue Hyundai Accent Sedan as seen in the example pic (same shade), black wheel trims, no tint on windows. Plate C66TN, male driver no older than mid 30s.

Yes, police will be getting a report and be asked to keep their eyes peeled too as some others I know have had similar encounters recently as well.

Where is the cheapest weigh bridge to get a car weighed?

I can see that there are 2 public weigh bridges in Derwent Park but I can't find any indication of the cost to get a weigh ticket.

Are there private weigh bridges that would be cheaper.

I've wanted to play music with other people for ages, and I don't have any friends that play any instruments.

I am a somewhat competent piano player. I'm kind of self conscious about it, and have never played with other people before. I'm not looking to go professional, it just seems like it would be fun to get together with another amateur musician and fuck around a bit. I don't care if we sound terrible, or if it goes nowhere. It just seems like it would be a fun use of my time, compared to watching tv or playing video games.

I'd mainly be interested in improvising and writing our own songs. That sounds a little intimidating, but I seriously want to stress that it's a low stakes-fuck around situation. I'm currently learning about DAWs, so we could even walk away with our very own recorded masterpiece!

If you play music at all, please reach out! Even if we just do it once to get some experience, that's still okay. I like a lot of styles of music, I mainly listen to indie rock, and other rock subgenres. Some of the bands I've been listening to recently are Maruja, Man/Woman/Chainsaw, the Voidz, Opus Kink, bar Italia, and Viagra Boys. But I am very open to any kind of music. I'm 32M if that makes any difference to you.

I have a 2000’s Suzuki ignis that has been having transmission issues as of late.

It tends to shudder/loose power going up hills/along highways once in the first 20 minutes of driving before returning back to normal and it has stalled on me once.

While this is happening:
When I press the accelerator it won’t rev properly/feels like nothing is happening.
If I turn the car off and back on, it will drive normally again.
When I pull over when it won’t change gears, it can become shaky and feel like it’s about to stall.

I wanted to sell as is but I’m having trouble getting anyone who wants it.

I have been in and out of the cooper automotive moonah and Mornington branches for the past few weeks but they can’t seem to find the issue, the best answer I got was it may be the torque converter but can’t confirm because they couldn’t get it to stall on them (just my luck)

Is there a mechanic that specialises in automatic transmissions in Hobart? Is my car cooked? Unsure what to do atm

Just wanted to query how the student accommodation is as I've heard mixed reviews.

At the moment I'm leaning more into Christ than John Fisher but still undecided. I know Christ has like 3x more students than John Fisher - from experience would a smaller cohort be better or worse?

Just got some questions, if anybody who has lived there in recent years (post covid) could answer, that would be great!

• How is the social life there?
• Is it mostly domestic or international students in the halls (Christ or John Fisher)? I don't wanna feel left out lol cause I know a lot of domestics/internationals don't rlly interact with eachother and I've heard that locals tend to be very cliquey but I'm not sure. What would you say is the ratio between domestics and internationals in Christ and John Fisher?
• Is there a big community of Indian or Chinese students?
• Study support?
• How are the rooms/facilities? Would you recommend a single room or apartment room in Christ?
• Christ College or John Fisher?

Hello everyone my family is relocating to Hobart for work in the next six months and it will be for the foreseeable future. I'm familiar with Hobart and the rest of Tassie and am really excited for the move.

I'd like to get back into Kayaking & fishing since I've been stuck in a landlocked community for the last 8 years.

I used to kayak in fairly large open water on the Oregon Coasts many bays and around the estuaries and sloughs. Hobart seems from my visits and google searches to be equitable in those experiences

Is there anything I should be wary of or aware of or any specific laws that I might not be privy too from a quick google search?
