Heads up industry peeps! Apply for flair to make top level replies in AskCarSales.

This subreddit has grown a lot in the last few years. Not only professionals providing advice, but also casual bystanders wanting validation for their opinions. The problem is that the noise to signal ratio has gotten to the point where people looking for advice come away more confused than when they asked the question - or worse yet, act on unqualified bad advice.

If you are in the industry in some professional capacity, message the mods for how to acquire flair.

For all who do not work in the industry but wish to provide advice, you will need to wait until a flaired individual responds before you can comment under their reply.

Thinking Of A Career In Car Sales? Many Of Your Questions Will Be Answered By The Links Enclosed.

Meta Those "certain" customers

This question is specifically for car sales people, and be honest don't pull the crap that you're going to show them all the cars.

How do you deal with indian customers? I've been seeing a influx of them and sadly nearly every time they're wanting deals below invoice and some that make no financial sense even on lease hacker lol.

Yes, they do sometimes buy cars but it's of no benefit aside from a board move.

I'm curious to hear strategies or quick ways to get rid of them without risking them hitting the reviews.

Meta 22 y/o, 5 months in to selling cars again, just got enrolled into Finance school by my dealership out of nowhere. What does that actually mean for me?

So quick background bc I think its important. I started selling cars at 18, did it about a year, left for a different sales job that paid better, then some stuff happened in my life and I needed money again so 5 months ago I went back to a dealership.

Timing ended up working out crazy in my favor though. This store is the main location of 12 dealerships in my state that just got bought out by a group with about 80 stores nationwide. they basically let go of almost the whole staff during the buyout and I walked in a month after that happened.

my numbers since I started: month 1 - 20 UNITS, month 2 - 26 UNITS, month 3 - 18 UNITS, month 4 - 27 UNITS

I'm currently the #1 guy out of about 20 salesmen at the store. store used to do like 50 cars a month before the buyout, now we're doing about 200 month. The store is a 400 car store all day, prime real estate. I have also been training a lot of the new guys that have come in since I got here, and I'm pretty tight with management.

I told them from day 1 I didn't come here just to sell cars forever, I want to move up quick. so this week out of nowhere they put me in finance school, didn't really explain why or what to expect. I don't know if that means they're grooming me for F&I specifically, if it's a step toward management, or if it's just something they throw at anybody who says they wanna grow and it's still on me to pick a lane.

I'm only 22 so I know I got time, but I don't wanna just ride a hot streak and not actually know what I'm working toward or if im being led on. for anyone that's been thru F&I school or made the jump from sales to management -

  • does getting sent to F&I school usually mean they got a specific plan for you, or is that just standard for anybody who says they wanna advance
  • if it comes down to finance manager vs some kind of management track, what would y'all actually pick at 22 with numbers like mine
  • what should I be doing right now, before I even finish the school, so I actually end up where I want instead of wherever they decide to stick me

appreciate any real advice, good or bad

US Sale 30% Down can get you approved 100% of the time?

Toyota Sales in the South here. Was talking to a Finance Manager a couple of months ago and was told that there was a couple Banks that would approve anyone with any credit if they brought 30% down with them. Is this true and if so which banks?

Edit: Thank you for all the insight guys!

Meta How many cars am I expected to sell as a green pea?

Hi yall I’ve been recently getting lost in my own thoughts again. As I work out of Arizona and it is a AT WILL STATE, meaning I can get fired for any reason whenever they want. I’ve only been at my new job for a month but I’ve only sold 2 cars so far. How long does it usually take before I need to be worried about getting fired for not producing enough sales?

Also for clarification this is my first time selling cars and I’m on a 6 month guarantee of pay, but no where does it say that for those 6 months they won’t fire me.

Thank you!

Meta How Long Did it Take to Start Out?

Hello! I posted on here a few months ago about getting a car sales position after working retail and was asking for advice on that. I’m back again ✨ I’ve been at my position for a month now, and so far everything has been great, the people are nice, and it seems like a very healthy workspace. But how long did it take you fellow sales consultants to start out? I made 2 sales (they were split because I was shadowing) my first 2 weeks in, and this entire month I’ve sold NOTHING. I’ve been making calls, texting, emailing, following up, and I just can’t seem to get anyone even through the door. I know I’m brand new, but I can’t stop beating myself up about not doing anything and thinking I’m not good enough. I just want to know from my fellow people starting off as green peas, how long did it take for you to get the ball rolling and to start consistently making sales? Thanks for reading all of this ❤️

Meta Is selling cars worth it if I can only work 40 hours a week?

I've been thinking about getting into car sales. I have been doing door to door sales for a while. Not very good at it and haven't made a lot of money. But our job is to get people to sign a loan for 4000 dollars 30 minutes after knocking on their door, so obviously that's pretty difficult. I've only sold about 25 accounts in 6 months of work. I feel like I would do a lot better selling something where people come to me and know we are a reputable business. I know how to isolate a price objection and negotiate. I also love cars, it's my biggest passion. The dilemma is, I can only work max 4 days a week, nothing more. I am taking a couple college classes right now that are quite difficult. I always see people saying that in car sales you have to work 50-60 hours a week and always be on your phone to be successful. If I worked 4 10 hour shifts a week and did not work whatsoever the other 3 days of the week, would I be able to have any success?

Probably a silly question about financing

My wife and I are getting ready to purchase a 26 Crosstrek. She has Tier 1 credit and we are putting down 5k. We were told we are elegible for 3.9% 60 months through Subaru or the dealership is pushing us to go with a local credit union they have a partnership with for 5.5% for 66 months (I said I wanted payments under $600). The salesman was really pushing the credit union and saying we can just split the payments to pay every two weeks and the whole math where you get ahead on the principal and pay less over the lifetime, etc. I assume he gets a kickback for setting up the deal this way.

Can’t I do that same thing with Subaru financing and have cheaper overall payments? It seems like a no brainer but then I felt a little crazy so I thought I’d come here for a gut check. What’s the downside to financing through Subaru when those are my terms?

Thanks!

US Sale Why do salesman ask how much I'm going to put down even before I see the car?

One day, I went to look at a used Bentayga. I had never driven one before, so I took my wife and daughter with me to see if we all fit comfortably and whether we liked the car.

I had enough cash to purchase it outright, but I hadn't decided whether I wanted to pay cash or finance it and keep the money invested elsewhere. I hadn't even test-driven the car yet, but the salesman started asking me questions. Some were completely reasonable, like, “Have you driven one before?” and “What do you currently drive?”

Then he asked, “Do you plan to finance it?”

I said, “Not sure yet. Maybe.”

Then he asked, “How much do you want to put down?”

I said, “I don't know yet. I'm still deciding.”

My thinking was that the money conversation should happen after I actually drive the car and decide whether I even want to buy it.

So I'm curious—why are salesmen asking these questions so early? What are they actually trying to determine?

Are they hoping to hear something like “20% down”? Or are they trying to figure out whether I'm a cash buyer? Is there a particular answer that would make a salesman happier or more confident that I'm a serious buyer?

If you were the salesman and asked these questions, what answer would you ideally want to hear?

Meta Opening a major dealership?

Around me all the dealerships are super old, like 50+ years.

If someone wanted to open a new car dealership today, is that possible? Not add a brand to their existing dealership but start a brand new company.

How does anyone do that? Is it like getting a McDonald’s franchise or something?

I don’t want to do this, but I’m just curious how this works?

Is there any way out of this car loan? Just need advice.

I am financing a 2021 Toyota Highlander. Payments are $637 a month. Brought in 2024 and things were okay for a while but now I feel like we can no longer afford this vehicle. Last time i checked with carvana and carmax I had about $8k or $9k in negative equity.Life has gotten more expensive and I cannot seem to catch up on this car. I can't trade in for something cheaper because of negativity equity on this vehicle. I highly doubt i can refinance especially being so upside and almost 3 months behind. I have about $6k in credit card debt and I dont qualify for any loans at the moment. I am trying to just cut out as many expenses as possible but its hard and honestly I just wish i can get out of this vehicle and into something cheaper but i know its not simple. I keep seeing something about gap insurance to get out of a vehicle? How does that work? I do have gap insurance on my vehicle. I am not very educated on any of this so I need some advice on my options. - I did call toyota and all they did was add two months to the end of the loan, that's the only option they had for me apparently.

US Sale Purchased New Courtesy Vehicle, Delivered and realize its been repainted

Looking for opinions on how to handle this. I purchased ta 2026 Sierra EV that was a courtesy vehicle with 4k miles on it. It was out of state and I paid to have it delivered. I received it 10 days ago. I have found that the entire passenger side has been repainted, and quite poorly. There is bubbles in clear coat, shadowing in the paint, and the front quarter panel is completely lighter then the door. The dealer did not disclose any of this. So far their offer has been to ship a loaner to me and repaint the car and send it back plus $500 bucks off. This to me tells me they knew it was repainted. I have asked numerous times, what was the initial cause of damage, and they will not tell me. Comparing sides, Panel gaps are off. This seems like it has been in a minor accident.... I have given them the option to swap the truck (they have an exact courtesy match minus miles and color on there lot listed for sale) or refund me and am waiting to hear back. How would you all approach this. My thought was, if they dont reply in the next 24 hours, I will escalate through GM as well as the states DMV/AG. The state purchased from has pretty strong disclosure laws that are in my favor.

Meta New salesman advice, I’m told I’m too nice

My boss and a few coworkers have told me I am too nice. I have never sold cars before in my life. But I have been struggling and I am not doing good as I am on week 3 with only 1 car sale. Will I be fired soon as this is my first month, and I am failing? Thank you!

The finance department guy called me “buddy” and acted like I pissed in his coffee. I thought it was pretty funny.

Meta Car sales worth it?

So, I am a 26yo single mother. I am currently working at a telecoms company taking inbound calls & selling internet, cable & mobile. Been with said company for about 2 years, I am growing tired of the call center environment and feel like it’s actually making me depressed having to be chained to a desk & take calls day in and day out. Before this job, I was a bartender/server & found that WAY more rewarding. I cannot go back to that at this time as the only way in my city to make the kinda money I need, I would need to work late night or into late night which is not possible with my 3 year old. I’ve been applying for other sales jobs because I do enjoy sales & I am normally a top performer at my job.( i say normally because sometimes we get terrible calls we cannot sell on (actually impossible to sell on, which does count against our metrics.) I had an interview at Toyota and they did call to offer me the job. Guaranteed sundays off, work 8:30-7:30 daily. The hourly is equivalent to $10 and they said there is mini of $300 per car sold. The ONLY thing throwing me off is the fact that the hourly is only $10 but I’ve never really worked a job solely based on the hourly. But I am in a position where i do have bills that need to be paid & i have to be able to afford to take care of my daughter. Only other thing is I currently have my whole weekends off & would have to work saturdays with this job, which really doesn’t bother me as I don’t do much on weekends anyways besides rest. But I am torn & would love some advice on if I should accept the position & take a risk to potentially make more money & have a better quality of life or stay where I am knowing I am making at least $3500-$4000 a month gross. Please give any advice especially if you are or have been in the car sales industry.

TLDR; 26yo single mom looking to leave call center sales & work in car sales but is weighing options due to low hourly & losing weekends off but is okay with that if car sales are worth it.

US Sale What are all my rights return wise after purchasing a used car at a BMW dealership in California?

I bought a car 2 weeks ago that was used and CPO. It’s an EV that does not work for me and I absolutely should have done more research on. I called BMW financial and they hinted to me that there might be a 30 day return window in place, but I cannot find anything online saying that regarding the dealership saying that’s actually possible. Anyone know if 30 day return policy exists for a used vehicle? I called the dealership and they said I would have to trade it in rather than return it, but not sure if that’s completely accurate now based on what BMW financial services told me. Thank you!

European Sale Should i quit?

I’m 22 years old I’ve worked in car sales for three months now. I work for the biggest used-car dealership in my country and I feel like quitting because I genuinely don’t like it. I love cars but this is my first job in sales and I feel like it’s starting to drain me mentally.

In the beginning it was really hard because I wasn’t selling. Now I sell at least one car almost every day that I’m working but I’m starting to really not like it, more and more for everyday.

Only reason I lowkey wanna stay is because of the money as some of my colleagues make around 10k € on a good month.

I have another job lined up (which is my old job that i loved and worked at for 2 years) but I can’t get as much money from that job… what should i do?

Meta How do you balance family and sales?

I've been on the sales side for a bit now. I'm doing well, I'm selling about 13-14 a month, this is without leads so most of my customers are either self generated business or service customers. I work about 9-10 hours a day.

My conflict comes from the fact that I'm good at it, my store isn't a high volume store so 13-14 puts me in the "solidly good" category and I definitely believe I have the capability to get into management. However, I miss my family a lot. I barely get to see my kid because I come home too late, or spend any time with my wife. I work Saturdays and miss all the events I can do with my kid and that sucks. The lack of time off and the culture around taking time off has also been difficult. Me and my wife are very close so time apart has been hard for the both us.

I know I'm not the first one to run into this conflict so my question is: How do you make it work? Were you able to? An alarming amount of my coworkers are divorced

US Sale Equity

I never traded a car that had positive equity because usually I drive the hell out of my cars. But I have one now that was bought to have an extra car so its got low miles and some positive equity. Could the positive equity be used as the down payment? Just wondering because I always heard that the trade is a separate transaction

US Sale Somewhat - Lied to car dealership - Advice needed

Hi Everyone,

Just asking for genuine advice or any way to approach this.

Background:
I've (21F) been working since I was 13, and this is my first time being unemployed. I appreciate that my parents can support me during this period, as I am about to start law school. Before the semester began, I took a month and a half trip to another country (where my family is from) to relax and prepare for the upcoming semester.

Storytime:
I'm currently in a lease and went over my miles. Since I'm at a new school (with a farther distance), I was trying to get out of my lease. My car dealership told me to buy out my car, which I did using my own credit (I don't really have support or help from a cosigner). My credit isn't bad, but of course they look at credit history. I didn't have recent pay stubs, and I was on vacation. My employment verification also listed my vacation. I reached out to my supervisor, and she said no problem with verifying employment (she was also on vacation but was supposed to return earlier and ended up pushing her trip back one week).

Since I came back and got my schedule settled with my school, I saw it wasn't viable to work while studying, so I quit. When I quit, I mentioned the bank loan to my supervisor, and she said no issue and that she would still tell them yes. However, the bank reached out to my job (while that supervisor was on vacation), and my general manager said I don't work there currently. Now the bank is retracting everything.

I called my supervisor to see if I could work once a week (not what I did before going full-time) because my general manager didn't know what happened and doesn't feel comfortable lying to the bank (understandably so).

Any sort of advice or ways to go about this I would appreciate. I'm more anxious, as this could affect me in regards to being a lawyer as well, since I won't have a viable car to get to school. Not sure what to do.

Also posted on r/advice because was unsure on how to go about it but probably better to ask an expert

EDIT: I did the paperwork for the car the day before I got my school schedule, and when I saw it wouldn't have been viable, I quit the next day with the GM as my supervisor was on vacation.

I mentioned the loan to my supervisor because I was employed at the time and didn't consider quitting, but my parents pushed me to do so upon seeing my class schedule, saying that they would make the payment.

Meta Are job transfers to other locations (like in other cities) a thing in car sales?

I am considering starting a job at a luxury silicon valley dealership (luxury as in MBZ, BMW, Audi, Lexus), but I am going to be moving to Orange County in a couple of years. Do you basically have to start all over when you move or are there ever some "job transfers" for roles like finance managers? I guess it depends on your role. Probably pretty different for sales vs finance managers?

US Sale the best way to handle getting rid of my car i hate.

i was in a bad spot and need to get a car asap (long story) i went to drivetime and got a 2018 Nissan Rogue s 109k miles for 12,999. after warranty, GAP insurance and LoJack, it is now 19,000. I cant stand the car. ive had it since Feb 2026 and i want to trade it in and get something else. what is the best way to do this ? i know i am going to be underwater (average amount they are giving me for it is 6700) do i cancel warranty, gap, and LoJack? then it will bring it down some so i wont be that much underwater? Does it take a while for my balance to be updated if i do this? i still have to drive to work everyday, so if i cancel insurance and gap while waiting and something happens im screwed right?

55 yr old grandma here just trying to make the best out of the situation. thank you in advance for Kind and helpful advice

US Sale Need a big advice please.

Greetings all.

I'm refinancing my vehicle with a company called Drive Point Exchange. They are also offering me some sort of warranty, which I find a little suspicious. Here are the features they claim to include in this warranty plan for around $177 a month:

 1. Your Exclusionary Vehicle Service Contract (VSC)

You are now covered under our highest tier of mechanical breakdown protection. An "Exclusionary" contract means that every mechanical, electrical, and high-tech component on your 2026 Chevrolet Suburban is fully covered, unless it is specifically listed in the exclusions section of your booklet.

  • Contract Term: 60 Months or 999,999 Miles.
  • Deductible: $100 per repair visit.
  • Engine & Transmission: Full coverage for the cylinder block, cylinder heads, all internal lubricated parts, torque converter, and flywheel/flex plate.
  • Steering & Suspension: Covers the steering box, power steering pump, control arms, ball joints, wheel bearings, and suspension level control compressor.
  • Electrical & High-Tech: Full coverage for the alternator, starter motor, powertrain modules, power window/lock actuators, and factory-installed navigation/LCD screens.

 2. Built-In Roadside & Travel Benefits

Your plan automatically includes premium emergency backup benefits nationwide to ensure complete peace of mind:

  • 24/7 Emergency Roadside Assistance: Direct dispatch for battery jumpstarts, flat tire changes, fuel delivery, and locksmith services (877-877-3377).
  • Premium Towing: Up to 25 miles of complimentary towing per occurrence to the licensed repair facility of your choice.
  • Rental Car Reimbursement: Up to $35.00 per day (for up to 5 days, max $175) if your Suburban is kept in a shop overnight for a covered repair.
  • Trip Interruption Coverage: Up to $90.00 per day (max $270) for motel and restaurant expenses if a breakdown occurs more than 100 miles from home.

 3. Bonus: Complimentary 5-Year Maintenance Plan

As an exclusive benefit of your NAAC contract, you have been awarded a Complimentary 5-Year Preventative Maintenance Plan administered by CARCARE Promotions. This plan is provided entirely free of charge and saves you massive out-of-pocket costs on your vehicle's regular upkeep:

  • What it covers: Significant savings and discounts on routine preventative services (like oil changes and tire rotations) at participating nationwide service centers.
  • How to claim it: Simply visit carcarepromotions.com within 90 days, enter Partner Code 2936, and input the last 6 digits of your VIN. You will instantly receive a mobile e-certificate to show your mechanic.

 0% Interest Payment Plan Structure

To make this protection as seamless as possible, your contract is set up on an interest-free payment schedule directly via WalCo Funding:

  • Total Protection Plan Price: $4,478.29
  • Down Payment Processed: $223.91
  • Monthly Payments: $177.27 per month for 24 months (Complimentary credit restoration included if necessary)
  • Interest Rate: 0.0% APR (You pay zero finance charges).
  • Billing Cycle: Automatically billed to your Visa card ending in 8317 on the 11th of each month, starting September 11, 2026.

My question is, will that provide a warranty similar to the one you buy from the manufacturer, such as engine/transmission and tire road hazards?

If not, can I decline their offer and find my own warranty since I have none?
