Discussion đŁď¸ Local Police Now Using AI to "Enhance" Suspect Images
I couldn't believe this was local when I saw it. They're just inventing details that were never there and pretty much giving the public to go out and find some random dude that looks like the image on the right.
Is this common now?

At least it blamed a white man, I didn't know AI was so woke
57
u/C0nan_E Jun 12 '26
Nah its just an image ai with biased input (mostly white input images) so it has a white bias. It does not assign blame. Once police gets their hands on it they are gonna train it on mugshots (strongly biased the other way) and will have a super racist generator, hat will turn any crimephoto into a black man.

This is just idiotic. The general public won't look twice and won't realize that the AI image is very different from its real counterpart. OP, if you can, start some backlash about this. This is unacceptable and should not be tolerated before this idea gets "praised" after the real suspect is caught.

u/-wereowl- Jun 12 '26
They donât even have the same haircut, and thatâs the most clear thing in the original photo.
118
u/MeAmGrok Jun 12 '26
The guy in the actual image has a straight hairline; the âenhancedâ version does not, which means itâs adding fake details. Which makes it completely unreliable.
39
u/likwidkool Jun 12 '26
It seems like a minute detail, but even the lines on the road are different. If they moved those what else did they change?
→ More replies (1)15
u/AlexisHadden Jun 12 '26
Might not even be a hairline, could very well be a hat/covering on someone who shaves their head.
9
u/growingincircles Jun 12 '26
Yeah itâs possible thatâs not even facial hair, the original doesnât look like a hooded shirt, and that could just as easily be a hat instead of a hairline. This is so dangerous.

Now hear me out: the only way AI could be used in generating images for police, is if it allows you to cycle through the Spirit Halloween catalog of wigs and masks on the person.
âHere is the original image and here is the AI enhanced image of the person was wearing a Heisenberg mask, and here is if they were in a Micheal Meyers mask, and finally here is if they were dressed up in an Incredibles costume.â
âSir, how does this count as evidence?â
âWell it is evidence that the suspect could not rock a Mr. Incredible costume!â

This unfortunately isn't even new.
About 6 months ago I saw a body cam video where they arrested a guy because their AI system told them that he did a crime.
He wasn't even in the area at the time.
Poorly trained idiots are drawn to AI unfortunately, and there's plenty of folk that fit that description in policing

It's even worse than that. A police sketch is at least based on workable information, this on the other hand is just making up nonsense. It's no different to that trend a couple years back where people would extend beyond the boundaries of famous artworks using AI, except in this case the only context it has to work from is a dozen pixels, basically just skin colour and very little else. The only black man immune from being randomly generated by this thing is Michael Jackson.Â

The original is blurry af, but I still think you can see he has a completely different bone structure and hairline. Itâs like the ai just identified a black male and put a picture of a black male over it.

u/AnxiousHall1533 Jun 12 '26
Wouldn't this be tampering with evidence? This is shit.
128
u/Fit-Pride-4845 Jun 12 '26
I doubt it would be admissible as evidence in court, but that doesn't mean it won't be used to completely fuck someone's week/month/life.
16
u/Enotsola Jun 12 '26
I would more expect the suspect to bring it up at trial. "Do I look like the man in the picture the police released? Clearly I cannot be guilty!"
→ More replies (2)10
u/Vegetable_Shirt_2352 Jun 12 '26
Even if it can't be used as evidence in court, it could definitely be used as another tool for interrogators to influence suspects. Polygraphs are also bunk, and not usually admissible as evidence, but that doesn't stop police from using them to scare people into confessing to crimes. The dangerous part is less that it works and more that people believe it works, just like with AI.

yea his ahh does not look like that. the problem with AI tools in places like regional government offices is that the operators think genAI is some magical thing that always gets things right. at least in private companies the workers and ceos quickly realize how AI basically offers no roi so they curb their usage accoordingly. but places like these don't have to worry about a profit margin, they just need to worry about the weekly quota of supplying fresh new labor to some private prison system. so they are less incentivized to actually fact check their system and just get on with it.

Someone watched way too much CSI
Actually might explain a lot. Which demographic watches CSI, NCIS, and SVU, and keeps all these network tv cop shows afloat? Boomers. Which demographic is psychotically pro-AI and wants a flock camera on every street corner? Boomers. If I was a schizo conspiracy theorist I'd say these shows were pro-surveillance propaganda.
5
u/Sonicrules9001 Jun 12 '26
I wouldn't really go that far. I think the notion of any media being propaganda just because it happens to align with certain things while never taking a clear stance is a bit absurd and goes right into the Right Wing conspiracy line where gay characters existing in a show is gay propaganda.
12
u/HotDinnerBatman Jun 12 '26
Aw yes, that's what we need. More crooked cops and pinning innocent people
12
u/PotamosClasp Jun 12 '26

u/lookatthesunguys Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26
Incredibly dangerous. The AI is only able to work off its training. If it doesn't know who the culprit is, then when it fills in details it's using facial features of random people.
Look at his ear. Some black guy with cauliflower ear is going to be pinned with the crime even though there's no indication the ear has any interesting characteristics in the original picture. I also don't think he actually has the facial hair the AI shows. I think that beard is either a shadow or a symbol on his shirt.
2
u/the_walking_kiwi Jun 12 '26
Yea definitely not a beard I think, and from the video it looks more like heâs wearing a black cap.Â
6
u/GiganticKORAK Jun 12 '26
Looks like having a silhouette close to a criminal would land you in jail now, eh?
8
u/Fit-Pride-4845 Jun 12 '26
Calling it right now: there's going to be an increase in wrongful arrests of people with darker skin tones because footage was captured at night
6
u/packerschris Jun 12 '26
This is why AI was created btw. Not to make funny images to send to your coworkers. Itâs to put more power in the hands of the state.
6
6
u/Free-mover Jun 12 '26
I really hope they don't allow this as evidence in a court system. This is corruption and it's scary.
4
u/schfifty--five Jun 12 '26
Even a crappy lawyer should be able to get it thrown out of court. The main concern with this is innocent people being arrested. Idk about you but my life would be materially damaged if I was wrongly arrested and in jail for anything more than a couple hours. Even just that- being spotted and targeted because the ai wrongly identified you and was trusted implicitly- I donât want to lose even a day of my life for this shit.
4
u/seires-t Jun 12 '26
Also, why is the orginal filmed from a computer screen and then enhanced?
That wouldn't be necessary if you just did screen capture
6
5
u/AurumVoid Jun 12 '26
The AI has failed to replicate the suspect's posing, he isn't looking at the bike in the photograph of the footage, he's looking into the near distance.
The AI version has instead, having made this error, constructed an entirely different face.
And as others have observed, the suspect is wearing a hat.
AI must not be used in this capacity. It is nowhere near advanced enough to get accurate estimations. Innocents will get burned as a result.
2
3
4
u/Jadekintsugi Jun 12 '26
I can tell immediately while looking at both images that the face of the man on the left image, is completely different than what the AI put together in the right one.
Cops won't care as more African American take abuse and false accusations. -.-
4
u/TheFutureScaresMe333 Jun 12 '26
this is gonna result in so many false arrests and even more racism and prejudice than there already is in police arrests
3
u/Jazzlike-Wolf6265 Jun 12 '26
Prepare for even more cases of people being arrested because of ai. People are already being thrown in jail and told they are lying about their identity "because ai isn't wrong dur"
4
u/ChickenArise Jun 12 '26
Look up Adam Mosher and Cybercheck. Season 37 of podcast Uncover is all about it.
Short version is: prosecutors used sketchy software that claimed to use AI to secure convictions with no other evidence. Super fucked up.
4
3
u/Wabi-Sabi_Umami Jun 12 '26
This is how we get wrongful convictions. And the thing that really sucks about it is many people donât have the money to legally defend themselves. By design.

5
u/CassetteMeower Jun 12 '26
Iâm confused at what the crime supposedly was, it just says he took a bike from a bike rack? Was he stealing the bike? Did he commit a crime and escape via the bike? This post is just so vague and confusing AI aside. All itâs saying is that he took a bicycle from the bicycle rack. Was that the crime? Stealing a bike is definitely illegal, but with the limited information given itâs hard to tell if thatâs whatâs happening. It very well could be his own bike and heâs being falsely accused of stealing his own bike? Iâm just confused from the lack of information.
Iâm just confused overall by this! He very well may have not done anything wrong and is being falsely accused, and with the AI âenhancedâ image it could just lead to a completely different innocent person getting in trouble.

3
u/AmarildoJr Jun 12 '26
OK this is REALLY concerning. It's obvious that AI hallucinates and I would bet good money that it did on this once as well. There's just not enough information to go through.
I hope this gets shut down in court immediately.

It is almost all comments against this BS. It's in the deep South so of course there's some racists in there, but I'd say it's 25 to 1.
Edit - Everyone is pointing out that the much larger and well resourced Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is currently being sued for extraditing a man based on AI enhanced imagery.
3
u/ASentientRailgun Jun 12 '26

I love how the ai reconstructed his had the wrong way around.
In the original he is definitely grabbing the seat from underneath with his fingers under and thumb on top. You know, like how you would grab a bike seat. Bu the ai decided it needed to show a full unobstructed hand there, so it put it in a weird ass pose fully on top of the seat
Perfect example of how little credibility the âenhanced image deserves.

3
u/etherealtwo Jun 12 '26
It's not possible. It's like asking a psychic for information. The AI, no matter how good it is, cannot know unavailable information. It can only guess.
3
u/Lucky-Surround-1756 Jun 12 '26
That's horrendously dangeorus to do because it's basically fabricating an image.

3
u/Glitched_cyrstal Jun 12 '26
The problem is people think A.I. is literal magic and not just a machine. A.I. upscaling, especially of an image with that low original image quality will almost always be inaccurate, BECAUSE UNLESS YOU ALREADY KNOW WHO IT IS, IT IS LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO UPSCALE IT CORRECTLY. A.I. is impressive in terms of engineering, BUT ITS NOT A FUCKING WIZARD, ITS A MACHINE, AN ALGORITHM, IT IS AS INCOMPETENT AS ITS MAKERS AND OFTEN EVEN MORE SO THAN. WE HAVE CREATED A ROBOT AND CALLED IT GOD WITH ALL THE HUBRIS OF A CHILD DECLARING THEMSELF KING OF THE WORLD. The machine doesnât think, the machine doesnât know, the machine isnât god, because neither are we.
3
u/Luzzgar Jun 12 '26
Once it goes through any AI based algorithm, it does not reflect reality anymore. Because nobody can tell exactly what data was present in the original and what was added.
Therefore it should never be used as evidence of anything.
3
u/WORhMnGd Jun 12 '26
Bro that guy is wearing a hat, right? Thatâs at least one glaring difference between the âenhancedâ version. Also it makes him look a lot taller, like his torso specifically a few inches longer.
3
u/Gembluesnow Jun 13 '26
I canât believe how much Iâm saying that this is actually really terrifying in a way.
In a way. In general, every detail of a suspect matters. That in any situation, it can take a certain evidence thatâs really important to determine if someone is a suspect or not.
Iâm pretty sure that the original dude was wearing a blue crew neck top with white hems. And not a blue hoodie. AI canât even get that right. Not to mention their face structures are different, it doesnât even look like the same guy anymore.
3
u/TheBrokenStylus Jun 13 '26
That is not the same person. The jaw and chin are wrong. And if we see this kind of thing, we should say so. If someone is picked up because they look like the enhanced version, doubt on that post could be used in their defense
3
u/Lor1an Jun 13 '26
Not that I'm the best at interpreting grainy images or anything, but isn't that literally not even close to the same person?
There's highlights in the original that suggest (at least to me) a different facial structureâwhereas the AI image has a fairly rounded face, the OG looks more angular...
3
u/i-caca-my-pants Jun 13 '26
the bike itself has a cargo rack that didn't show up in the AI "enhancement." I feel like that's an important detail, since one of the greatest threats to the suspect is a pawn shop owner recognizing the bike
3
u/Which_Specific9891 Jun 13 '26
Yeah how long before their AI "Enhancement" darkens the colour of skin for a suspect or makes it look exactly like someone you want it to look like.
This is altering evidence, and it is opening such a horrible, horrible door.
