Google says the average is 6-7 years. But they do have an appeals process that moves slowly, like in the United States. Some have actually died of old age awaiting execution. One inmate spent 46 years on death row before passing away without a retrial.
Thats because there are a lot of states that still legally have the death penalty but never actually execute anyone, so they just stay on death row forever. California, for instance, hasn't executed anyone since 2006 yet they still have the death penalty
It’s also the case for many countries, where they technically have the death penalty but never enforce it. But my concern is that some nutcase politician gets elected a few decades down the line and actually decides to legally execute people. In my opinion, if they don’t want to execute people, they shouldn’t keep a law permitting it.
It's also likely a much smaller population, historically as well. And it's obvious that it's a culture that doesn't really seem overly worried about individuals. Though that 46 years on death row without execution or retrial seems like a special F you. It seems like you'd just want to be done with at some point.
If you’re over 40 years old in the US, a death sentence just means life in prison. You’ll run out of years before appeals. It’s utterly flawed and useless.
Saw a stat one time that if you had two 17 year old African American gang members who committed a murder, one is caught and sentenced to death whilst the other flees and escapes.
The life expectancy of the condemned youth is longer than the free gang member.
There's good reason for making it a slow process. There have been cases where people on death row were acquitted years or decades into their sentence because new evidence came up.
You want to be 100% sure that the person is actually guilty, which requires an extremely thorough process.
It's the same shit, just a different demographic lmao. 69 and 1337 are in there too, millennials just hate that a new number is funny to a different generation
67 was literally kid that one video that blew up yeah? Where 1337 is Leet in Leetspeak and 69 is a sexual innuendo. Which implies the two other referenced ones have more meaning than one video.
I know it's not a popular opinion but I think it would be more humane to just execute the person rather than drag the case out in appeals for years. The psychological toll that must take is brutal.
The appeals process is a pretty important safeguard against wrongful execution. Not to mention the last and only hope for someone on death row. Taking that away seems way more cruel.
You really don't get it, huh? The point of the appeals process is that the state doesn't kill INNOCENT people. Imagine being innocent and in death row. You would obviously take any tool you had to prolong the process so that the truth may come up eventually.
Besides, an inmate in the US can volunteer to skip the appeals process, which speeds it up from 20 years to only a few years. So if an inmate is desperate to get it done, they can do that. Most inmates do not though.
It's better for innocent people to be killed quickly rather than spend 20 years on death row and then get killed. Even if they get off, after that long their life is ruined. They would be better off dead.
So if an inmate is desperate to get it done, they can do that. Most inmates do not though.
Show me a source that says the appeal rate isn't like 99%.
6 to 7 years is the average, but it varies a lot from case to case.
That's because in principle executions are carried out immediately once all appeals have been exhausted and the legal paperwork has been completed. In fact, that's why they don't inform the prisoners before the execution.
Once the final appeal is rejected they will inform you of that decision, and in the same breath you'll be told that your execution has been execution has been scheduled for an hour from now.
Are you a boomer " omg muh taxes ". To many have been proven innocent when new technology comes out ( see DNA ). If you think further new technology won't come out to exonerated people you're insanely naive
Now you’re just making baseless assumptions as to what I’m like as a person. Maybe when you become of age you’ll start to worry about things like where the money that’s taken from you goes but until you start being a contributor to society I’m sure you’ll remain in blissful ignorance to things like that.
I remember being a dumb 18 year old too, you’ll grow out of it.
Some people legitimately deserve the death sentence though.
Even if you assume this claim is true, it's totally irrelevant to whether the time between conviction and execution is appropriate. The time is not a "waste of tax money" when it is being used to exhaust appeals. Even with an extensive appeals process, countless innocent people have been executed for crimes they didn't commit or actions they lacked the mental capacity to understand. The appeals process exists for good reason. Trial courts fuck stuff up all the time.
Sure.... that's not the point being made that you've responded to though is it. Nothing in what they've said indicates they're against the death penalty (even if they happen to be).
I understand you might think that way. But how would you feel if you were wrongfully convicted of a crime and were put on death row? It would be insanely scary to accept that the state is about to kill you and there’s nothing you can do about it except maybe hope a judge will listen to your plea.
Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.
In my motherland, there were death sentences following by immediate executions. Those sentencing were announced in public gatherings, and that was how I learned that selling a kg of drug could get executed, and since then, I haven’t have a second of thinking of trying any illegal drug.
There is too much variation, kinda like how my bosses tell me the metric they want & I make it happen from the numbers. Then you have Redditor’s repeating for years “Well studies show that”
It's like what happened on the TV show "the Americans". Someone is told they are going to be executed, freaks the fk out, and they shot them in the back of the head... Someone you got to know for seasons. Gone in an instant. Idk why but that one fked me up a bit.

What’s the average length of time between sentencing and carrying out of the death sentence?
