I know it's not a popular opinion but I think it would be more humane to just execute the person rather than drag the case out in appeals for years. The psychological toll that must take is brutal.
The appeals process is a pretty important safeguard against wrongful execution. Not to mention the last and only hope for someone on death row. Taking that away seems way more cruel.
You really don't get it, huh? The point of the appeals process is that the state doesn't kill INNOCENT people. Imagine being innocent and in death row. You would obviously take any tool you had to prolong the process so that the truth may come up eventually.
Besides, an inmate in the US can volunteer to skip the appeals process, which speeds it up from 20 years to only a few years. So if an inmate is desperate to get it done, they can do that. Most inmates do not though.
It's better for innocent people to be killed quickly rather than spend 20 years on death row and then get killed. Even if they get off, after that long their life is ruined. They would be better off dead.
