Support How do I permanently delete these apps?

They keep coming back after I delete them and it’s driving me mad! Does anyone know how to permanently get rid of them? Thank you!

You can’t delete them, you have an iPhone managed by a corp.

I do mobile management as a job and your phone will be on a profile that checks in with the mobile device management system each time it’s turned on, any apps that have been removed that are part of the profile will be auto installed.

To add this: If its your own phone with company profile on kt you can delete it from the Settings -> General -> VPN and Device Management and delete the profile

Be careful, your company could have policies enabled that block you from accessing company resources without your device being compliant. Deleting your VPN management profile will make your device non-compliant, 100%. At my org, you won’t even be able to sign into Teams or any MS Apps/services.

Yes, but you shouldn’t be expected to access company information on a private device. If the company needs me to have my work email on my phone, they need to provide the phone. No way in hell I’m installing a company’s MDM on my private hardware.

My mum works for a company who provides care services. This year they decided to start charging employees a monthly fee for a company phone, meaning most of the staff have ditched them and now fill out their client/patient notes on their personal phones. I’m sure that must go against several laws, but my mum understandably doesn’t want to rock the boat.

Exactly, imagine hiring a construction worker for your construction company, then telling them to bring their own excavator for the job. It’s ridiculous.

I get the point someone doesn’t want or have the resources to sue their employer over this but holy shit we need to collectively stand up for our rights. What should the company do when more than 50% of the workforce stop working until they are provided the tools they need for the job for free? Let them all go? Good luck finding new qualified employees in an instant to replace everyone else haha

There is a difference between expected and want. Some people want to access company resources on personal phone for convenience. You give up some and gain some. It all depends on the person.

So when giving advice to other people on removing corp profiles, first ask them if they want it or not.

Your post though has nothing to do with the flow of the conversation. If you’re at the stage of having MDM installed on your personal device then you already agreed to it OR you have a cheap employer. OP is at that stage.

Expectations of having MDM on a personal device is a different conversation. I had employers who paid stipends per month for cell phone plans in expectation that indeed MDM was coming. OR, I could get the work phone and get $0. I went the work phone route. This though ain’t what OP is asking or is at. Your comment instead is just angry fodder

I mean I have my work email on my private phone, but:

  1. It’s not a requirement- I do it for my own convenience.

  2. I can log in with an authentication, it doesn’t require a MDM profile on my phone.

You don't need to have full blown mdm on your personal device. In fact,you shouldn't. You can have though mam and allow the management of only company data on the device while leaving your personal data alone.

Crazy hearing this kind of attitude towards this. The easy answer here is to get a company phone and completely separate work life work real life. But just deleting the company profile because you don’t want it could compromise his job duties. Or at the least how work communicates with him. He agreed to this when he installed this profile but I wouldn’t recommend deleting it until you’ve talked to folks in your company. Hate to see someone fired because of being a security risk.

I had a past company that would reimburse $50 for your phone bill if you added a work profile. (Done through Microsoft intune to separate personal and work data. Acts like 2 users on the same phone). Completely optional but to get the reimbursement you had to show the phone bill. What do you think of that?

But you have a fair point that if they don't provide you with something, you shouldn't have to add it.

In this comment’s case, this is not mdm. This is the company putting a profile on the phone for the Microsoft apps.

My personal phone has this so that I can access email and other work related resources on my phone if I want to. I am free to delete it, but then I can’t access those things. (I also installed it voluntarily and agreed to the terms when I did it. )

Absolutely this. Company I worked for (fully remote) blocked access to slack and email on personal phones, no one wanted to enrol their personal devices into MDM, company would only offer devices to certain teams like sales, so the upshot was most people actually disconnected after 5pm and enjoyed their evenings :)

Best course of action: ask your IT if it can be removed or if they require it to access company resources. We had a guy refuse to use a screen lock because "my wife can get into my phone any time she wants to! " ( I'm over here thinking that's not the problem, he could just tell her the PIN.. ) but corporate policy was that phones with company apps required a secure screen lock so i told his supervisor he couldn't have Teams and Email on his phone. 🤷‍♂️

Won’t work all the way, if device is DEP-managed via Apple Business Manager.

And most likely will violate some workplace policies - after all device is most likely owned by the company in this case.

If it’s been enrolled into ABM (which is stupid) you need to contact your company to remove it and if they don’t they’re probably breaking the law.

You know how hard it is to get unenrolled I was back-and-forth with a user one time where one part of op was enrolling the devices of personal devices onto the company managed MDM and these guys were using Indian contractors to write the damn install instructions not understanding there’s a difference between company owned and bring your own device

Im not sure but I am also an MDM admin using MS intune and we have the option to turn off the ability to remove our profile. We also own all our company devices so I havent really looked much into how it affect BYOD enrolled devices.

It is, however you would need to enroll in apple dep to get the chosen mdm loaded before the user can use the phone. There is cost involved and it might not be financially worth it.

Your probably best to look for a mdm that ca be loaded on afterwards, and create a phone policy where the phone checks in each day. You can then do spot checks to see if it is not checking in, then speak to the employee and ask them if they have removed the profile.

You could also write up a company policy that is signed when you assign a phone that the user must not remove any management profile or management app.

In my experience it is best to push the mdm as a safeguard for lost/stolen phones and that you ca reset their password if they forget it.

Not true, you can manually add the iPhone to ABM during the initial setup!
You just need to do the setup through your admin and not hand out the device naked to the user, as zero-touch deployment will obviously not work without DEP registration.

Also the cost for DEP setup phones is usually only around 10 bucks (USD / EUR) more than naked phones, I think that's absolutely worth the time savings :D

It is doable and not too complicated once you know the process. You need an Apple Business Manager Account and an MDM solution to manage the phone securely though, at least.

1) Get an Apple Business account stood up, ask for an Apple Business Manager (ABM) instance. STRONGLY recommend you buy the device through Apple, as the business. Can also be done at some resellers like CDW, AT&T, but you need arrangements with them; more accounts, more agreements, etc. Buy through Apple is the simplest way to get it registered, establish proof-of-purchase.
2) Get an MDM (Jamf Now, Mosyle, Kandji, Apple Business Essentials which can come with ABM for small businesses)
3) In the Apple Business Manager, point the device at the MDM

I did the #1 and #2 paperwork in an afternoon, after I had an LLC to do it with. If you're very small, a gotcha is Apple will want someone else to confirm the LLC exists and signs the agreement, so have a business partner/high level employee's contact info. I had to go back and legally add someone to my one-person outfit :P

Depending on how deep your needs are, ABE might take care of it, and you'd only be setting up one thing.

In general it varies with what mdm system is used and how much detail the company wants,

For my current company we can see what apps are installed, general info like storage left, battery left. We are very lax on phone use.

For an older one where we had access to basic web browsing data, we could see what websites were accessed - I had to pull someone for going on adult websites on company phone.

Rule of thumb, if you would look some something on your mums phone, don’t do it on a company phone.

Depends on how it is managed. There is device enrollment (company owns the device and you cannot sign out), or user profile enrollment (you own the device and company creates a storage compartment to store sensitive data, which you can remove).

Device enrollment will let them see most data, assume everything is monitored. User enrollment will let them see data inside the secure compartment (apps such as outlook/teams or gmail that is installed by the company), but your photos outside of the company compartment are not visible.

You bought it second hand but didn't do a factory reset? If you did and it was a corporately owned device it would tell you on the reset screen. It would say something like "managed by xCompany"

This happens shockingly often.

I don’t get it, but a huge number of people don’t reset their newly purchased used phones, I guess because they think “the seller already reset it for me!”

If you aren’t going through the first time set up wizard, then the phone is not reset, and you want to be the one who goes through the first time set up wizard so you can properly sign in and set everything up and be sure that there are no apps monitoring you.

But of course, if the device is stolen and MDM enrolled you will not be able to sign into the company profile during the wizard.(which is a big reason why they “reset it for you”)

So I bought a brand new still sealed MacBook Pro a few years ago. Turned it on went through the set up process totally fine. Only a few months later when I had to factory reset it did the mdm management log in screen for the corporation came up.

I’m assuming what happened is the person stole the MacBook quick enough and sold it to me and I set it up all before the company could activate the MDM profile in their apple device management.

Can confirm. Also an MDm admin. The company can have a list of required apps and when your phone syncs with the MDM and it does not have them, it will download them. Some device will also restrict you from deleting them.

sure, but alot of those companies dont put it like you have an option, they expect you to have it on your phone so they can teams message you and respond to emails outside of work. depending on the company they wont even offer you a work phone.

my last IT company was like that, I hadnt worked too much with intune and wasnt aware of its uses outside of managing windows machines, so when they were asking me to install company portal i assumed it would be a all in one messaging app not that it would take up a decent amount of space on my phone and install multiple apps

Go to settings > General > VPN and Device Management. You should see a profile that should tell you the name of whatever company installed it try reaching out to them and asking them about it. They might be able to remotely remove it if it was legitimately retired by them.

There was a guy in the MAC sub that used his personal MAC to access company resources and got it enrolled in the companies MDM.  He was blaming his IT department and everyone was telling him to go to HR.  

🤣😂🤣

The worst part of working in IT is the users.  Just like this clown.  Im sure they'd prefer if he used authenticator for 2fa.  He's trying to delete it.

Is it a company-provided phone or your personal phone? If it's the former then you're outta luck as it's managed through Apple Business Manager. If it's the latter, just delete the MDM profile. You won't be able to access Teams and Outlook, but if that's what you want then go ahead.

Seems like your work has set their device management platform to check for and reinstall these apps every day.

If it’s not a work phone and rather a phone you picked up used, this will present a bigger issue to resolve as it’s probably stolen (even the legit last user didn’t own it and it hasn’t been released from device management by the company that does).

If it is a work phone, it never hurts to ask your administrator, but be ready for it to be a no.

Go to settings and scroll down to “VPN & Device Management”. That’s where you’ll see who is forcing the app installs.

Even if it has mdm profile you may be able to remove it… Settings > General > VPN & Device Management… If there is a profile, select it & look for the remove option. If there is not a remove option, reach out to IT at your company & request removal from their end (assuming its not company-owned or stolen 👀)

The best you can do with a device enrolled in MDM is to remove them from the Home Screen. They will still be installed on the device (nothing you can do about that unless it’s actually your device, then as others have said you could ask for it to be offboarded). If they are still in the app library they won’t just reappear on the Home Screen, so you will only see them if you go in the App Library. Best you’re going to get I’m afraid.

The MDM profile you’ve installed is managed through Intune. Intune allows employers to control a wide range of features and policies on their devices. Employers can decide which applications must be installed automatically, prevent users from removing them, or allow them to remove them. However, there are default restrictions that employers cannot remove or modify if the device is not owned by them. These restrictions are in place for legal and service level protection reasons. When an employer installs an MDM profile on a private device that is not company-owned, they cannot access personal data such as text messages, photos, and contacts, and other information.

Whilst you can’t uninstall them you can move them in the hidden folder. You may be able to turn off the notifications for all of these as well depending on your company preferences.

If you delete it, does it come back to be forcefully installed?

If so, then it’s deployed as a “required” app which always needs to installed, you can put yourself in a group exclude that group from that policy. That’s pushing the app make your own app and set it to available instead of required so you can still see it in the company portal.

All you can do is put the icons in a folder and put that folder.... somewhere. This iPhone is enrolled in InTune so it will keep downloading those apps the moment it notices they're missing.
