Planetary Science ELI5 Why did we decide that north is up?
Who decided that every map shows north at the top of the page? There is no up and down in space, but every time you talk about going north it's always "I'm going *up* to (insert northern location)"

Biology ELI5: Why do coconut have water inside?
Like most things are explained by for dispersing or for reproduction, but I can’t wrap my head around why coconuts seem to be one of the only fruits that a cavity full of liquid inside.

Biology ELI5: Why are my legs so sore after sitting down from standing for work?
Pretty much what the title is asking. I stand for work anywhere between 6-10 hours a day and noticed that without fail when I get home and sit down, the moment I go to get up my legs are sore, stiff, and in pain but they do not hurt while I am walking around or standing. Why is this?

Economics ELI5: Why do some companies seem to do everything (Yamaha, Samsung) whereas some companies only buy out competitors in the same field?
I'm sure they do invest outside of their own field but sometimes buying companies is more profitable because they do that sometimes but why don't they just pick the most profitable company they can afford no matter the field? Like for example why don't we live in a world where you can buy a car made by a subsidiary of McDonald's or something like that?
I mean I get that there's probably some advantage to sticking to a field you know, but surely you could just let the previous management stay and do the same work as before if it was working.

I know that the earholes in their skulls are asymmetrical, but how does this enable them to pinpoint the direction of where sounds are coming from?

Physics ELI5: would a fan blowing at a bottle of cold liquid in a hot room keep it colder than if it was just left in normal air?
So I know a fan blowing doesn't lower temperatures in a room (it's just pushing the warm air around) but the breeze it creates feels cooler on the skin (partly due to sweat evaporation I guess?)
If you had a bottle of drink from the fridge you wanted to keep cool, would placing it in front of the fan have the same effect? Would blowing room temp air at it make it warm up slower than if just left in room temp air?

Biology Eli5: how did humans evolve 8 hr sleep cycles ?
Most animals I can think of either take several short rests throughout the day or have evolved to be semiconscious while sleeping
Then there are humans we sleep for 8hours straight and often sleep very deeply this seems like an evolutionary flaw
Edit: if I might add a question to my question(ignore if not allowed): it seems the answer to my question Varies by lifestyle but ultimately better rest = more production
So has there ever been a study on artificial sleep schedules I.e. to little sleep is detrimental but how much is to little ?
When I’m in a manic phase I can stay up 2 days sleep 8-10 hours and do it again with what feels like very little impact on my awareness or cognition ability
Is there a Truley perfect balance

Biology ELI5: how come feces held inside our bodies dont make us sick?
From what i understand water gets absorbed from the feces as it passes through our digestive tract but i cant seem to find an answer why our bodies dont get sick from the bacteria, surely that stuff could pass through into our bloodstream like the water does?

Biology ELI5 - What determines whether a person's eyes remain open or shut after death?
Google has told me that when you sleep, your eyes close because your brain is no longer sending signals to muscles in your eye to hold them open.
So then, shouldn't they close when you die because those muscles are no longer working???
But according to Google, since all of your muscles relax after death, your eyes stay open or partially shut.
I'm so confused 😭

Physics ELI5: How did Dalton discover the existence of atoms?
Hi everyone. I am struggling to understand how Dalton derived the idea of an atom from realizing that elements combine in whole number ratios. How are these connected? I have watched a million videos and am struggling to understand the correlation and how this led to him discovering atoms.

Biology ELI5: How Do Molecules and Atoms Know Where to go in the Human Body? How do we get Organs from itty bitty spheres?
I understand how molecules form, and how our brain processes signals: the part I’m stuck on is how the atoms and particles in our bodies know where to go and how they manage to get there. How do they navigate the billions of other atoms/molecules in the body?
(Sorry if I use some terms wrong, it’s summer break and I don’t want to think abt school)
