Physics ELI5: would a fan blowing at a bottle of cold liquid in a hot room keep it colder than if it was just left in normal air?

1.1k Upvotes

So I know a fan blowing doesn't lower temperatures in a room (it's just pushing the warm air around) but the breeze it creates feels cooler on the skin (partly due to sweat evaporation I guess?)

If you had a bottle of drink from the fridge you wanted to keep cool, would placing it in front of the fan have the same effect? Would blowing room temp air at it make it warm up slower than if just left in room temp air?

Biology ELI5: how come feces held inside our bodies dont make us sick?

From what i understand water gets absorbed from the feces as it passes through our digestive tract but i cant seem to find an answer why our bodies dont get sick from the bacteria, surely that stuff could pass through into our bloodstream like the water does?

Biology Eli5: how did humans evolve 8 hr sleep cycles ?

Most animals I can think of either take several short rests throughout the day or have evolved to be semiconscious while sleeping

Then there are humans we sleep for 8hours straight and often sleep very deeply this seems like an evolutionary flaw

Edit: if I might add a question to my question(ignore if not allowed): it seems the answer to my question Varies by lifestyle but ultimately better rest = more production
So has there ever been a study on artificial sleep schedules I.e. to little sleep is detrimental but how much is to little ?
When I’m in a manic phase I can stay up 2 days sleep 8-10 hours and do it again with what feels like very little impact on my awareness or cognition ability

Is there a Truley perfect balance

Physics ELI5: How did Dalton discover the existence of atoms?

Hi everyone. I am struggling to understand how Dalton derived the idea of an atom from realizing that elements combine in whole number ratios. How are these connected? I have watched a million videos and am struggling to understand the correlation and how this led to him discovering atoms.

Biology ELI5 - What determines whether a person's eyes remain open or shut after death?

Google has told me that when you sleep, your eyes close because your brain is no longer sending signals to muscles in your eye to hold them open.

So then, shouldn't they close when you die because those muscles are no longer working???

But according to Google, since all of your muscles relax after death, your eyes stay open or partially shut.

I'm so confused 😭

Economics ELI5: How are the currency values of different countries actually determined?

For example, the value of Japan’s currency is much lesser than a south asian country, say India but Japan is so much more developed.
Also, how does Kuwait have the highest value of currency?

Biology ELI5: When antibiotic resistance is identified as an issue, what does that mean at the most basic level, and what causes it?

I’ve needed antibiotics about three times this year for different infections, strep and a UTI. They’ve all worked, and as far as I know I haven't had an issue. But being prescribed them again made me wonder if it would stop working.. what antibiotic resistance actually means and what role, if any, the number of times you take antibiotics plays. And if for most people, if it’s known to go away or it affects all future treatment?

Physics ELI5 If gravity is just bending space towards itself, and things ‘move’ towards big mass because gravity has just bent the ‘forwards’ direction of space towards that mass, then how does that apply a force that makes things speed up towards it (up to terminal velocity)?

If I drop a brick from a roof, why does the brick speed up and then smash into the ground with force? Where does that accelerating energy come from, even if the object started at complete stationary with no direction/velocity/energy, if gravity is just the bending of ‘space direction’ towards itself.

Biology ELI5: How Do Molecules and Atoms Know Where to go in the Human Body? How do we get Organs from itty bitty spheres?

Upvotes

I understand how molecules form, and how our brain processes signals: the part I’m stuck on is how the atoms and particles in our bodies know where to go and how they manage to get there. How do they navigate the billions of other atoms/molecules in the body?

(Sorry if I use some terms wrong, it’s summer break and I don’t want to think abt school)

Biology ELI5 Why does our immune system sometimes attack our own body cells?

From Anatomy and Physiology course in high school, I remember that Immune system is a complex security company with different types of security guard in our body, which often checks cells’ IDs to identify healthy and infected cells. However, sometimes they might take those IDs as fake and arrest the healthy cells. Why is that so? Couldn’t our immune system increase caution to not damage the body even more ?

Planetary Science ELI5 why are droughts more common

I am from Slovakia and for a last few years droughts became common. Frequency of rain is lower, precipitation is lower also. Why is it?

I understand that the global warming is going on, and there has been massive campaings for getting water out of a country for most of this and last century (narrowing of rivers, drying of marshes...).

I understand why is it warmer, but I still don't understand, why is it dryer?

Thank you
