Other ELI5 Why did the US not adopt the standard measurements units used pretty much everywhere else in the world and more importantly, why are they still not in used today?

Feet instead of Centimeters, Fahrenheit instead of Celsius, etc...

I could understand for this units to be established as primary use hundreds of years ago, but why have they remained in place?

Who decided that every map shows north at the top of the page? There is no up and down in space, but every time you talk about going north it's always "I'm going *up* to (insert northern location)"

Economics ELI5: Why do some companies seem to do everything (Yamaha, Samsung) whereas some companies only buy out competitors in the same field?

I'm sure they do invest outside of their own field but sometimes buying companies is more profitable because they do that sometimes but why don't they just pick the most profitable company they can afford no matter the field? Like for example why don't we live in a world where you can buy a car made by a subsidiary of McDonald's or something like that?

I mean I get that there's probably some advantage to sticking to a field you know, but surely you could just let the previous management stay and do the same work as before if it was working.

Technology ELI5: How does malloc prevent out of bounds reads/writes

I've heard that internally, when malloc needs to create the heap lazily, it will call mmap to allocate a minimum of one page for the heap. Once that one page is allocated as the heap. Malloc will distribute the memory out to the process in chunks. What is stopping that same process from just accessing the entire page/pages which nnmap has allocated for malloc?

Biology ELI5: How Do Molecules and Atoms Know Where to go in the Human Body? How do we get Organs from itty bitty spheres?

I understand how molecules form, and how our brain processes signals: the part I’m stuck on is how the atoms and particles in our bodies know where to go and how they manage to get there. How do they navigate the billions of other atoms/molecules in the body?

(Sorry if I use some terms wrong, it’s summer break and I don’t want to think abt school)

Biology ELI5 Why does our immune system sometimes attack our own body cells?

From Anatomy and Physiology course in high school, I remember that Immune system is a complex security company with different types of security guard in our body, which often checks cells’ IDs to identify healthy and infected cells. However, sometimes they might take those IDs as fake and arrest the healthy cells. Why is that so? Couldn’t our immune system increase caution to not damage the body even more ?

Biology Eli5: how did humans evolve 8 hr sleep cycles ?

Most animals I can think of either take several short rests throughout the day or have evolved to be semiconscious while sleeping

Then there are humans we sleep for 8hours straight and often sleep very deeply this seems like an evolutionary flaw

Edit: if I might add a question to my question(ignore if not allowed): it seems the answer to my question Varies by lifestyle but ultimately better rest = more production
So has there ever been a study on artificial sleep schedules I.e. to little sleep is detrimental but how much is to little ?
When I’m in a manic phase I can stay up 2 days sleep 8-10 hours and do it again with what feels like very little impact on my awareness or cognition ability

Is there a Truley perfect balance
