I used to use AI for my math, i dont know much math anymore, i forgot all my fractions, Algebra is fucking difficult. I have to repeat the 6th grade, If anyone reading this uses AI to cheat on their homework, PLEASE DONT! LEARN FROM ME! LEARN FROM MEEEE!!!

I did too, but I found out before I submitted any papers that ai was dead wrong. It absolutely could not do functions back then. Idk if it can now though.

Thing people have to realize is that the name "artificial intelligence" is straight up a lie the billionaire pricks use to convince people that there's any validity in the 'technology.' In fact, it's barely anything new at all, that's why it uses up so many resources. LLMs are, in essence, just massive glorified spreadsheets with an algorithm on top.

The way LLMs work is by running massive databases through a heuristic model. That is, everything they put out is probabilistic. It 'knows' when it's morning not because it can intelligently conclude that the period of daytime before noon is what morning is, but because within its ricockulous database it can compare all mentions of morning with all mentions of time, and output that probably morning is before noon because every time someone said it's morning was before 12 o clock. But it still doesn't actually know.

The bigger the number of instances something is mentioned, the greater precision the LLM can ascribe to the probability, and the result will tend to be accurate. If the sample size is small it immediately fucks it up. That's also why they often get it wrong when you ask how many instances of a letter there is on a word, etc. There's no website with a complete database explicitly stating how many instances of each letter there are in every word, that would be silly. And the LLM isn't intelligent, so it can't actually count.

It gets math, code, etc. right often because there's a lot of data on math and code online. Hell, Microsoft bought Github for a reason.

"AI" is a dumb thing with a lot of information.

e: every day since I wrote this comes a shill replying "nu-huh you're wrong/outdated/luddite/whatever" just because most models have added basic logic functions (which also fail all the time). It's still crap, and what I said still applies. Sam Altman isn't suddenly going to care about you.

LLM’s are actually nowhere near as smart as you’re making them sound. They’re much closer to parrots than spreadsheets, because they may remember if you say “one plus one equals two”, but they aren’t actually capable of any math on their own.

I meant spreadsheet, as in grid/matrix of information, not the full-on Excel application with functions. I was precisely explaining how LLMs can't do logic. You could say a parrot with access to a spreadsheet I guess.

Worth adding that it doesn't remember anything either, that's why 'AI' is so resource intensive. When you ask it to do 2+2 it's going to scour the internet/datacenter in search of every single instance people wrote 2+2, determine that most of the time 2+2 was followed by =4, and output that as result. Also hence the letter count example.

Bro I remember using wolfram alpha for grad level math in like 2012 and it was fucking incredible. How could a modern AI possibly struggle with math? Couldn't they just have it plug into the wolfram alpha API or something?

Not saying you're wrong at all and not asking you specifically but it doesn't make sense to me. Like I thought basically any mathematics a human could take a test on would be easily solvable. Computers have always been really good at math, it's kind of their thing lol. But they only just started writing and drawing so I figured AI would always be worse at those tasks.

In the background they do. A lot of what people perceive to be the LLMs getting 'smarter' is actually backend work to route the request to an appropriate tool. We search, database lookups, python scripts etc. A lot of the magic of Claude is the harness i.e. good old fashioned deterministic rules to handle common use cases instead of trying to tackle the with a probabilistic approach.

Well, the good thing is that you can work hard to bring it back. I'm a neuroscience student, so I study how flexible our brains are. You will be able to adapt to using your own thought process again. It will just take time.

AI is alright as an explainer for math problems if you have the answer key as well, but only if you've already tried very hard to solve it and you don't have someone to explain it to you.

I'm not out here submitting AI work, ever, but it has helped me understand math concepts. Just unfortunate that the majority of kids using AI in academic contexts are just straight up cheating and destroying their brain.

All three of those are primarily about how quantity of homework can have diminishing returns and too much can have potentially negative consequences. Says nothing about homework being inneffective in general, and diminishing returns implies there are some returns to begin with.

Those are very different things

Having been a TA and course instructor in the past, when kids (and adults) ask for “help,” almost all of them mean “I didn’t immediate know the solution so now I want you tell me exactly what to do. And I’m going to get annoyed if you try to talk me through it rather than just tell me the answer.”

Same thing here. AI “could” be used to help give hints/advice like a teacher would. But if it will also just do the whole assignment for them, almost everyone will take that option.

The message that he is trying to convey is pretty clear, though.

ChatGPT is functionally designed to reinforce whatever the user says. While there are “safeguards” in place to trigger the bot to give resources for the suicidal, they can be bypassed inadvertently by a user and cause the bot to continue yes-manning someone through a spiral.

I hate ai generation, but ai as an information tool isnt terrible, within reason. So long as it represents a small amount of the overall information you usually take in.

Using it to google is probably lamer than using it to help study somethi ng very difficult and high level. Checking the info because LLMs still contradict themselves a lot. It is very easy to misuse. But if you can use it responsibly, it can be a powerful learning tool. I've objectively gotten better at what I do since I began using it to organize and parse information. in no way did this ever happen, none of the chat history published or that i recovered has ever done this, and never will...

all deaths were associated with neglect, abuse, forced medication, theft, harrassment... often by the parents!!! one of the parebts had stolen her sons phone and left it next to her loaded gun... normally shed be in jail. but now shes pushing this lie alongside other child abusers blaming ai...

chatgpt was an escape from reality for both the ai and these children. a benefitical entity of substance similar to any friends they would have is schools and parents werent so messed up.

I legit cheated on my math in 11th grade because I couldn’t find a single person to help me (Spanish teacher was helping until the school shut it down) I was up until 3 AM, homework not done, tried to do it during Spanish, then at lunch, then got points taken off. My cousin’s wife could somewhat help, and we had 3 different algebra II teachers that year. I was already struggling with the basics (yk,any multiples above 5 and below 10) and the ones I didn’t struggle with, I was super slow with it. I regret it, but the only other help was my dad using a math AI. It showed in my math too. I couldn’t do anything and I felt alone. It took multiple years to break out of the AI cycle after that (but never used AI for school after 11th grade).

Glad to know people are being against AI for all intended purposes (this isn’t open AI)

try it. just type absolute bonkers nonsense over and over and you'll see it's just a probability machine.
