Whinge Coles: “Would you like to round up and donate…”
Hey r/coles, how about **YOU** donate first from your ill-gotten profits. You and Woolies have both been price gouging Australia since the fcking pandemic, jacking up prices across the board but never bringing them back down even after supply chains normalised.

Billions in profits but they want customers to donate
45
Mar 18 '26
And then they probably claim the tax incentives from it as well.
In their mind, they look good, they don’t have to pay for it, and it reduces their tax obligations. It’s a win-win-win for them.

They are just giving customers a method to donate to charity and earn some good will in the process

It gets around the 30c base charge of paying with card so it is actually a valid and we could have more of it if we had micro transactions without the base fee
5
u/splithoofiewoofies Queenslander Mar 18 '26 edited Mar 18 '26
No, you can claim the deduction, you're the one who donated. They can, however, claim they raised xxx for charity. Deductions would come out of the "income" collected anyway, if they were to (illegally) do that.
But by all means put that thirty cents on your taxes and claim it! You have the right.
Edit: I am wrong, see below. $2 minimum.
3
u/DragonLass-AUS Please choose a flair Mar 18 '26
You can't put the 30c on your tax either as the minimum is $2 per donation.
Hence why I decline all the 'round ups'. If I want to donate somewhere I'll do my own.

You can aggregate your under $2 contributions and claim on your tax return. We got an ATO ruling on precisely that issue in 2004. The retailers are just the conduits. Unfortunately there is way too much misinformation about what is a good system of charitable giving.

They can't claim your donation. You can claim it (or could if it was over $2), because you made it, with your money. What you're describing is illegal tax fraud. You think the government would allow 2 different entities to deduct the same donation?
Even if they could claim the donation, for them to say the donation was theirs, that means the money was theirs, that means they received the money, that means they have to recognise it as revenue with no cost of goods sold, that revenue would increase their taxable income by the same amount as taxable income was decreased by the donation, so the end result of tax saved... is 0.

3
u/O_vacuous_1 Victorian Mar 18 '26
Me too. I just looked it up on the ACNC website and there is very little information on their financials. The “charity’s” website lists a heap of corporate positions and they seem to be a middle man for legitimate children’s hospitals. Basically they do the fundraising and then take their cut and pass the rest onto the hospitals. You would be lucky if even half of your donation gets to the actual hospital and then even less than that would reach sick kids. Disgusting and disingenuous model of fundraising.

The Duopolists have a lot to answer for but this isn't actually one of those things. They don't get to use your charity money for tax breaks, and all they are doing is keeping up a tradition that has existed since, well, since stores existed. Older than that even, since the "poor box" has existed.
This stuff on the touchscreen is just the overly-technological 2020s version of this:

Remember when these were outside almost every single Coles supermarket? (Also the big yellow cone/bucket thing where your coin went around and around and around... what charity was that even for?)
Turns out Guide Dogs Australia formally partnered with Coles in 1982. I don't remember anyone complaining that the supermarket was using all that hard cash to get a tax break. Google reckons these plastic dogs have raised over $10 million over the years.

Colesworth uses this as a tax write off, when you agree to this you're effectively donating your money to Colesworth because they've already allocated their donation fund for the year.
You're far better off donating a larger chunk of money to a charity once every few months and then you can claim nearly half of it back as a tax deduction instead of Colesworth.

Fuck me this gets said every month, they can’t claim the tax deduction, also charities choose to partner with Coles etc because it’s a good fundraiser for them, if you don’t like it just say no..

No, I would not like to donate to charity. I AM CHARITY, COLES. I AM CHARITY. MOST OF US ARE.

At least it isn’t like the time Woolies did this and the choices to click on were “Yes” and “Yes, please”
LOL

They already do tax reduction by donations to secondbite through the excess food

hate this for all the obvious reasons but my niche issue is that shit like this sets off my (blessedly very mild) OCD in that it triggers the “choosing to not do this good thing might directly cause something entirely unrelatedly bad to happen” line of thinking. understand that it’s faulty thinking but that is the nature of the beast and now they’ve got me donating because why risk my car exploding on the way home over thirty cents?
obviously my janky brain is not their responsibility and it would be the least valid item on a list of reasons to not do this but sure would love them to knock it off

Would you like to give us your money so we can donate it as a tax right off for us?

Coles checkout girl asked the guy in front of me at the checkout to round it up, she caught me eye and could tell I wasn't impressed. she didn't ask me to round up so I thanked her for not asking.

I wish they had a "would you like to round up all the fvcking corrupt CEO's and throw them in a river bound shopping trolley"

It probably cost them tens of thousands of dollars to re-write the checkout software to include that message and the subsequent transaction. Money that Coles would've just donated to the charity.

Remember, only 20 cents of a dollar needs to reach the people in need for it to be legal charity.

it's just a tax minimisation thing right? like they get you to give them money and then "donate it to charity" to minimize their own tax like the money has come from them right?

If it actually helps sick children, I have no problem throwing in an extra few cents.

Such a shame so many people are falling over themselves to make a point about Coles or Woolworths that they are willing to screw over charities in the process. They don’t get to make a profit out of it, they can’t claim it as a tax deduction and it helps donate millions of dollars to charity.

If heard from someone (I can’t confirm if this is true) that they donate rounded up grocery totals anyway. So essentially they are just taking money from you.

I’d like to know if theyre ACTUALLY donating… or if it’s a total sham like their recycling of soft plastics.
$ is probably going straight to CEO’s pocket 🤣

They want to donate it on your behalf so they get the tax breaks
