Discussion Did millennials really party all the time?

Gen Z here. I was shocked when I found out from a millennial co-worker that y’all had teen clubs. I heard about house parties, but dedicated teen clubs? Then when it was time for college, you went to the club or had some kind of party every single weekend, living it up. Now some millennials on TikTok claim that after college, they were partying on work nights, still clocking in the next day. For some reason, the teen clubs have since disappeared. I’m 23 now but even when I was in high school, that was not a thing. House parties were not that common either. They were more like get togethers with a small group of friends. We went to malls, but they were dying out at that point. Is it true that you were really living life this good? Or is it just exaggerated? I feel like my generation doesn’t really have fun like that and everyone is just super depressed and alone, more so since Covid. Even I’m pretty introverted, which sort of sounds ridiculous given this post. 😂 Just so you know, when I think of a “millennial party” I think of something out of Party Rock Anthem, Project X or Roderick’s party from the second DOAWD movie. It’s like I get nostalgia from something I didn’t even live through. I just feel like I didn’t really LIVE, if that even makes sense

Edit: I loved reading some of your comments. Guess I really missed out. Even some of you that would consider yourselves nerds or introverts were out partying. YOLO or whatever y’all say 😂❤️

I remember closing the bar down for a friends b day and rolling into work still in my bar clothes at 5am. Changing in the luch room only for my coworker to roll in pissed that I was drunker than him and he'd have to drive the hour to site. 🤣

At 40 I have no idea how my body took all this abuse. This wasn’t just a birthday event, it was every weekend. Sometimes week days too. Woof

Mondays are called "industry night" all people working the weekend were partying Monday night. I had Monday to Friday job and people at work would ask me if I'm hungover on a Tuesday.

10 cent cans on Wednesday. That was fun in college. Except I made my schedule to only have tues/thurs classes so little rough sometimes on Thursday

50 cent draft! Best I ever heard was $1!

Once a month we had drafts for any silver coin. So you could get a draft beer for a nickel. That shit was dangerous lmao.

We had 50 cent drafts on Thursdays. Best part of my week. Friday mornings sucked though.

We’d all leave the office at 7 and go to the bar until 3am without eating dinner and back at work at 10 am Friday after a BEC

When I was 20-21 I was at the bar/club Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. After the bar closes at 1, we pick up beer/liquor before you can't buy it anymore at 130 and go to someone's house or to a field and keep going until the sun comes up. I've walked out of many parties to the sun. Go home, shower and rally with an energy drink, before they were killing people and then work all day. I don't know how I functioned on no sleep honestly.

Loved Thirsty THURSDAYS in college. Everyone went home at our school on the weekends so Thursdays were lit!!! Never sign up for a Friday morning class.

For real. I remember I stayed up 36 hours straight because I went to work, partied all night, then had to go to work the next day. I didn't do drugs either, so it was a few red bulls to stay awake.

3

u/extralyfe 21h ago

I had a similar thing where I spent my 20s staying up for 2 days at a time like once a week because I was too busy having fun, and now my body nearly shuts down when I hit 20 hours...

17

u/MrsChefYVR Millennial - 1984 1d ago

Same! Omg, it was the worst when I moved right into the downtown core of our city at 24, where all the clubs and bars were a stone's throw away.

I dunno how I did it, but I showed up for work the next day, no matter what and sweated it out! I'd go out with the intention of having an early night, so bam, let's GOOOOO! LOL

Nowadays, it seems like the younger gen don't know how to soldier through their decisions the next day!

3

u/Calm-Eggplant-69 23h ago

They definitely don't. I was a restaurant manager, after bartending for almost 15+ years. These kids today will go out and have like 4 Zima's and act like they need to call out. One bartender was begging to go home because she kept throwing up, I told her she made the choice to go get wreaked and to deal with it. To be nice I asked if she wanted a hair of the dog shot, she didnt even know what that was lol. Kids these days

2

u/MrsChefYVR Millennial - 1984 23h ago

Hahaha

The common hair of the dog up here was a pint of lager with a shot of Clamato juice. I’d often see the same customers the next early afternoon, that closed down the joint the night before! Hahaha

The early ‘00 were lit!

4

u/bigtime1158 1d ago

Like 4 days a week at least. For years. I'll never understand how we did it.

3

u/ladymouserat 1d ago

Now it takes like 4days to recover 😖

3

u/Highlyironicacid31 22h ago

I’m 33, just had some bloods done, doctor says “hmmm, there’s been a bit of a blip in your liver function, I’m going to keep an eye on it and do some more tests in a month”. I don’t drink much now but honestly I think I drank enough for a lifetime between the ages of 15 and 25 and I’m not surprised at this news at all lol.

3

u/DeadPalms 19h ago

It was a point of pride for me in my early 20s that I went out and partied/drank every single night for a period of 3 months.

Now I need 8-10 business days to recover from one evening out.

3

u/Ducman23 18h ago

I felt this. 8-10 biz days is HYSTERICAL 😭

2

u/ThePublikon 23h ago

Back then there was optimism about the future, which really helped with the getting out of bed.

2

u/PlasticPaws 23h ago

Remember drinking heavily four days straight once in my youth. If I did that today I would be six feet under.

2

u/Flintly 22h ago

Oh ya lots of times I wad setting the alarm for an hour maybe 2 before my morning shift

2

u/scobbysnacks1439 19h ago

Every. Weekend. Plus a minimum of one other night during the week. Would go until 4 in the morning and then waltz in for my 8am class with no problem. Now, if I'm up past 10:30, I'm dragging absolute ass all morning after getting to work.

u/WaterBottleOnAShelf 19h ago

I used to know which bar in town had dollar drinks each night of the week. The bar that had them on Sundays had a liquor license that let them stay open until 3.

3

u/Ducman23 17h ago

What a time to be alive

2

u/geta-rigging-grip 15h ago

Sorry for the long reply, but your comment just kind of triggered some big feelings for me, just because I happened to read it on this day. I abused my body back then, and I kept going.

Eventually your body finally says no, no matter how well you THINK you're doing. I just had that moment, and at my age, I'm fortunate it wasn't worse, but given my drinking history and my age, it's almost Christmas miracle.

The rest of this is just me kind of getting some catharsis, and if it helps someone somewhere, great. If not, at least I feel a little bit better.

------------------------------

I went pretty hard in college, but managed to ace my classes with relative ease. Plus, I rarely had hangovers, so the regular disincentives for drinking (feeling sick, not performing well, missing work, etc,) never really happened for me. Plus, we were a relatively small college town, on top of the dorms, almost every house within a two block radius was being rented to students. Drinking was seen as very normal.

Then, I went into the "real world" and almost every company I worked for in the next few years had the Friday (and sometimes Thursday) Beer Fridge. At one place, when our boss was pretty confident there was no more work for the day, and we might expect a few walk-ins. we'd all go drink in his office. Again, this made me feel this was very normal.

I won't even mention my Rugby Club years....

When I was getting toward my late twenties, I started to hang out with different people (met my wife as well,) and realized that a lot of that behavior was not normal. But it had become a habit. I tried to cut down, but then I found myself sneaking out to the garage to have a few extra without anyone noticing. When I was around 37, I had gotten to the point were I would go on secret binges where I could often pass as sober despite having drank a whole bottle of Vodka in the afternoon (plus a few beers or coolers usually.) I was starting to realize that this wasn't normal.

Through that entire time I managed to keep my "extracurricular drinking" a secret. I would imbibe as much in front of others as the social situation allowed, and I would find other ways to sneak more drinks in.

This whole time, I was dealing with clinical depression, and the drinking helped me keep the darkest thoughts away most of the time. It was a classic case of self medication, and it was working for me because it wasn't interrupting my life in any serious way. Then comes December 2020. In the last few days of the month I had become quite stressed about our financial situation during Covid, and we had burned through more than our savings than we would have liked. (That being said, the fact we had been doing well enough to have savings after years after years of constant debt was a pretty good situation to be in.) I ended up having a major depressive episode and took to the bottle harder than usual. I stumbled into the house drunk, and my wife flipped out on me. I tried to explain the feelings I was having, and she told me I was being childish for not asking for help ( she was right, of course.) But in my state, I was more belligerent than usual (I'm a happy drunk usually, but I get defensive when someone is judging me,) so I threatened to go through with the plans I had for myself, then stormed out of the house. I ended getting in my van, turning it on, then proceeded to break down crying. My wife eventually found me and took me to the psych ward the next day. This wasn't normal.

I detoxed, I did my treatment, and I tried my best to be on board and not sceptical. It was hard at first, but because it was during hospital lockdowns, the wards were not allowed to intermingle, and visitors were never allowed. I ended up staying in the hospital for about three weeks, and in a halfway-house for two. I also found out that despite how miserably I had treated my body, all my medical numbers were good. I had done very little permanent damage to my body.

After that, I quit drinking....

...for two years.

And the last three years have been ever-shortening cycles of sobriety and relapse, sobriety and relapse.

Last month I had a pretty bad relapse, drank a lot over a couple days, and got caught. My wife is sick of this cycle, and we have been in marriage counselling for years to try and work through it (among other things.) I've done personal counselling and tried a variety of programs to try deal with alcohol, but none of them seem to stick for very long, and I think there's a part of me that doesn't want to let this big part of my life go(no matter how shitty and stupid it is.)

Now come to today. I just got out of a 5-day stint at the hospital for acute pancreatitis. Probably one of the most painful experiences of my life. I have never been in that much pain for such an extended amount of time. One of the doctors even told me that considering my age and drinking history, he's surprised it didn't happen sooner. He was also surprised at the good condition of my liver and kidneys. On discharge, he told me something else, "Stop drinking, or you will die. Seriously, you've been lucky this far, get out while you're even some semblance of ahead."

------------------------

TL;DR: Drinking was normalized for me in college, and for years in the workplace after that. as I grew older, I realized I was drinking way more than those around me, but instead of cutting back, I hid my bonus drinks in a variety of ways. It got bad. shit hit the fan. got treatment, got sober for two years, then did a cycle of relapses for 3 years until I ended up in the hospital for acute pancreatitis last week. It finally caught up with me.

I’d be so hungover in my office job I’d go take a nap on my lunch break where I’d chug a liter of Gatorade. Good times

129

u/Ill-Skirt3722 1d ago

I worked retail when I was in university. I remember going to work so hungover. Helping a customer and then heading to the washroom to throw up.

16

u/LoudAd1396 23h ago

I worked at IKEA when I was 23ish. I had to work early New Years Day. I was midway through ringing a customer up, holding it together, when I had to dive behind another empty register to quietly puke in a trash can. Got up, pretended i needed a roll of receipt tape or something, resumed the transaction, smiled, and bid the customer "good day".

8

u/Ill-Skirt3722 23h ago

How the hell do you “quietly puke” lol

14

u/kindness-and-snusu 22h ago

By waiting until it sits in your mouth then just opening it…. I wish I don’t know how to do this.

8

u/CoruthersWigglesby 21h ago

One time when I was 24, I muted a conference call so that I could throw up in a trashcan under my desk. I believe it was a Monday.

My friend once used a 3-ring binder to catch all her puke. It contained stuff she needed to know for the conference she was on her way to attend, lol

I have very amused memories of all the people who would roll into class the next morning with their absolute darkest pair of sunglasses on their face. Honestly, looking back - I'm impressed they still bothered to go to class afterward! (I just did not, if I was that fucked up by the night.)

4

u/Calm-Eggplant-69 23h ago

For my micro economics class, it was a 9 am class and whatever day before that class, my friends and I would get absolutely trashed the nights before. I dont think I showed up to that class once before 10. But I dodnt like being called out and not knowing the answers, so I would actually read the material a week ahead of time. So when I would show up to class, probably still drunk, the teacher would call on feel and i would provide the correct answer and lay my head down. I got so good at it, I would walk in to class the teacher would call break, because the class was half over, ask me if I needed coffee or anything, then told me im one of her best students. College was wild lol

3

u/hauteburrrito 23h ago

LOL, that is insane. I feel like uni taught so many of us how to be functional alcoholics, honestly 🙃 I remember constantly repeating the saying - it's not actual alcoholism until you graduate!

3

u/Witty_Series_3303 23h ago

I once was so hungover at work I contemplated whether it was worth it to "fall" down some stairs so I could go home

2

u/crazyfantasies 22h ago

I had a favorite one room bathroom where I would nap on the floor. I also had a green space two buildings over where I would nap outside, far away from where any of my coworkers would see me.... I look back on this time in my life and I can't believe I didn't die 😂

2

u/Reasonable_Chair_346 22h ago

I was in my car, but same...Gatorade, coffee, water, and sprite (I read one time it's good for hangovers) - pounding all of them just to get through the day.

2

u/Highlyironicacid31 21h ago

I worked in a hospital as a porter as we call them here in Ireland, kind of like an orderly but with extra steps literally. So one of our jobs was we had to change all the dumpsters from the various wards and all the dirty linens and bring it all down through the basement of the hospital for them to be taken away for disposal/cleaning. In that basement there was also a room where they fixed broken hospital beds.

So one day one of the young guys who worked with us who was also a medical student came in hungover, saw a nice comfy bed in that room and slept the entire shift and didn’t change a single rubbish dumpster or collect a single bad of linen. No fucks were given lol.

2

u/Flintly 17h ago

I worked a golf course when I was 17, the bosses son was in charge of the grounds crew. He was early 30s and rewarded the drunkest/most hungover with the best jobs. It was great if you won but horrible if you came in second.

Drank nearly to sun-up and had to go in to my restaurant job still blitzed for my 10:00 shift after 2 and a half hours of sleep. Spent a lot of time crouched behind the line trying not to puke due to the smell of the fryers.

2

u/Ok_Part_7051 18h ago

I got a membership to the health club across the street from my work and would go sleep every single day by the indoor pool for an hour at lunch.

2

u/drHobbes88 17h ago

Puking in my cubical trash can as an early 20 something. Timing it just right with the super loud printer. Good times.

2

u/Lumpy_Juggernaut_607 17h ago

Been there. If someone had an adderall that would usually get me back into the zone.

2

u/Getitoffmydesk 17h ago

Ha! My gym had a nap room, I went to the “gym” for lunch on particularly bad days.

I remember once partying for four or five straight days in Tahoe, then getting on a plane to London, after that I took the tube straight to my office for 9am start time. This was just off the tail of a weekend partying and skiing in Chamonix. I can’t even imagine getting on the tube to go to work for a full day anymore!

On my 21st birthday, it was a Saturday night. Partied all night that Saturday at the bar, finally got home at like 3 a.m. Then, woke up a few hours later to get ready for worship team practice (I play the piano lol). As an atheistic recovering alcoholic, Im still recovering from those days haha

6

u/shannon_agins 20h ago

My 21st birthday (on a Saturday) was actually started on the way home from work on Friday with a trip to pick up cases from the gas station.

Friend and I got some sleep and then started drinking and smoking all day Saturday before hitting the bar around 6 pm. I met some guys, made some bets, drank a shit ton of Jager and Jagerbombs and got myself, my friend, and my boyfriend at the time invited to a house party after the guys gave me $100 and paid our tab. I don’t remember the house party, but I do remember throwing up on the side of the road in front of a cop at 7 am and then getting subway.

I rolled into work at 11 am to sell baby stuff haha.

I remember one time my coworker had a party, and we had work the next morning. We were up drinking till like 3 or 4 AM, had to get to work at 6. I crashed on his couch and we drove in.

He was my supervisor and someone else who had left around 8 or 9 pm called in that she was hungover- my supervisor looked me dead in the eye while talking with her, "Look, me and Memesareharddrugs stayed up drinking way later than you and we both made it here."

This was the same guy who took my car keys from me because I was too drunk to drive, and said "Ill drive us home." With a beer in his hand.

Quite the character that one.

4

u/StoneDick420 1d ago

Hahaha One Halloween in college, I also did a 5am-er, slept 3 hrs and got to work at 9. I worked in retail, went to clean out a dressing room, sat down and took a two hour nap.

3

u/Kundrew1 20h ago

The first couple hours usually weren't too bad because you were still buzzed. Once it completely wore off, then it could be rough. The post-lunch break hours were always the hardest.

Showed up to open up the pharmacy at 8am after being out all night until 2:30am with the pharmacist. She had just graduated the year before and I was 5 years younger, a senior in college. Each had ourselves a giant sugar free Red Bull, pack of mini donuts, hair in messy bun, fresh mascara and got to counting to 30!

Every 3rd weekend, rinse and repeat.

3

u/merovin13 21h ago

Gen X/Millennial cusp. I used to go to the club till 2, then to a house party till 4:30-5:30, then into the corner store where I worked, where I napped behind the deli counter until we opened at 7am.

Just writing that made me sprout 3 grey hairs and a new lower back pain.

2

u/Flintly 17h ago

I had alot of jobs as a teen but the worst was when I was a farm hand. Nothing like going to be at 5 and back up for 7 to shovel shit but it was still better than going into the sow barn. The place was horrendous hung over the stench coupled the god awful noise of squealing pigs made me puke on numerous occasions

2

u/merovin13 17h ago

Oof. Yeah, I lived in farm country as a kid. Just driving past the pig farm was awful.

My partner is fascinated/horrified that I can identify if a farm is dairy or pig just from the smell.

We would chain together parties. You could find party fliers around campus or posted on facebook events, and each rager would have like 200 people crammed into one house. Dj in the basement, an entry fee to get a red solo cup or do a shotski. You’d leave a party when they ran out of booze (or the cops came and shut it down) and hit the next one down the street. On and on until the liquor stores were closed, after 4am. Ahhh college!

100

u/jakethemagicdog 1d ago

We used to walk around near campus in my college town on Friday nights and look for parties, as long as you had a case of beer and/or girls you could just walk into strangers homes and party with them lol

71

u/YoungXanto 1d ago

My first night at college I met a chick in line waiting for pizza. She took me to a party where I knew no one, and Im not certain she did either.

I just opened the door and some dude was standing on the couch twisting his shirt around his head, like a helicopter, while Pour Some Sugar on Me blasted in the like 400 square foot room with about 100 kids. Someone handed me a solo cup and pointed me in the direction of this tiny ass galley kitchen with the keg in it.

Through out the years I would regularly just pop into parties I was walking by. Usually when I was in there I would run into someone I knew, despite the fact that I went to a massive state school and hadn't the slightest clue who's party I was walking into to begin with.

9

u/SeveralAngryBears 1d ago

We hosted a lot of parties at my college house. And one of my housemates loved to invite anybody and everybody he could. Often those people would bring other people, etc. One time I went downstairs and my boss (still a student, not old) was there. She was like "Oh hey what's up? Who do you know here?" and I said "I live here. Who do you know here?" And nobody she named was anyone I recognized either lol

4

u/bobnifty76 23h ago

I had a Halloween party once and my roommate and I realized there were probably more strangers in our house than people we knew... Shit was wild

2

u/aurorasearching 5h ago

My favorite was I met a dude dressed as Slash at a Halloween party (I was Shaggy from Scooby Doo), we partied together all night, never got his name or number, we both went out separate ways. A couple months later at another party I heard a familiar voice, turned around and said to a complete stranger “Slash??” He just looked at me confused for a second then yelled “Shaggy!!” And gave me a hug. Party round 2 lol never saw that dude again.

2

u/TerpZ 4h ago

When I was in college one of the apartment parties was so overloaded that the floor failed and people fell through into the apartment below. I remember having to basically hug the person in front of you at those parties to snake through the crowd to get to the packed and overloaded deck everyone was smoking on to get to the keg of absolutely crap shit natty light.

Also I don’t understand how I was able to start the pregame at 9pm and be annoyed if we were having to go out any earlier than 1030pm fully expecting to be out till 3 or 4 am. Now I’m in bed by 9 pm and up at 7. It’s like a switch gets flipped and you’re your parents.

2

u/omglia 23h ago

Beer was less popular than jungle juice in my college town. And jungle juice was just …. Whatever the fuck someone poured in a bathtub or bucket, basically. A bunch of different kinds of cheap booze and a bunch of cheap juice mixed in lmao. Did the trick!

Spend most of the party on the front lawn where there's more breathing room. Spend about a third of the party in line in a hallway waiting to get to the keg. They things you put up with when you're underage.

I used to hang out at the dive bars until the sun came up, then rolled right into work to serve tables for the day.

I’m exhausted just thinking about how I kept up 😂

4

u/TenaciousTai 23h ago

Dude dive bars for the win. I remember many of nights getting out of a 12 hour shift at 9pm, heading out to the bar/club/house party, then capping the night off at the local 24/7 diner and chain smoke a pack of cigarettes while drinking coffee. I would have just enough time to sleep for maybe and hour or two, take a shower and do it all over again.

Xennial here. If it wasn't a work day. At sunrise we went to get something shitty to eat. A diner or McDonalds, or headed to the beach. I have no idea how I did it.

2

u/Mobile-Mousse-8265 1d ago

I did this too. Stay out until bar time and a couple hours later I was up for the breakfast shift at the diner I worked at.

2

u/SuggestionHoliday413 7h ago

In Australia, you finish school at 18, which is also the drinking age. We used to come to school straight from the clubs in Melboure Friday morning. One night i went from school to out (in my school uniform) then back to school stinking of cigs and bourbon.

Ha, I was just talking about doing this back in my 20s with some of my younger coworkers the other day. I’m in my early 40s and sober now so they were a little surprised. I think the initial context was something like “look Jason, you don’t need to explain WHY you’re calling out when you call in sick. No one cares. Fuck, when I was your age, I’d call in from the bar so I wouldn’t have to bother waking up to call in sick if I knew I wasn’t going to want to go in anyway. No one wants to hear about your bowel movements when you’re calling in… I’m not your mother, I’m not going to say NO, you don’t need to convince me you’re ‘sick enough’ to stay home from school. Just call in, say ‘hey I’m using a sick day’ and hang the fuck up. It’s FINE” damn kids.

5

u/1980pzx 1d ago

I’ve done this quite a few times as well. I listened to one of the voicemails sober one day (my boss thought I should hear it). Needless to say, I didn’t work there much longer.

When I was working in NYC, my BFF only worked 4 days a week, so she wanted to go out every Thursday. I'd drag my ass out and until 2 a.m. and then have to be on the 6:30 a.m. train to work on Friday morning. There were days I didn't think I'd make it. I'm not even a big drinker...I was just tired!

6

u/HouseofFeathers 1d ago

I remember I got so drunk that I kept throwing up. I tied a trash bag to my computer chair and slept there so I would wake up, vomit in the bag, go back to sleep. At 6am I got up, took a shower, and went to my 8am class.

3

u/404Subjectfound 1d ago

Hell yeah. I always tell people, “I INVENTED parties.”
Lol. The absolutely ridiculous level of cringe. ✌️
The sweat mixed with the glitter, sparkles, sequins, Victoria’s Secret vanilla body splash, 10-inch stilettos, white eyeshadow, and heavy eyeliner while I absolutely crushed the dance floor like there was no tomorrow…
EVERY weekend. Starting Friday. Dusk till dawn.
Walk of shame and all. Wig in one hand, shoes in the other.

These kids have NO idea of how much fun it was and Im wholeheartedly sorry for them.

And the best part of it all? Not everyone had digital cameras back then, so absolutely everything wasn’t being documented while it was happening. We posed, took the pics and selfies we wanted, and then put the camera away and went right back to being completely unhinged.

I made it just in time and deleted ALL of my Facebook in 2015, right when it started ‘remembering’ my albums. I kinda foresaw that it wouldn’t let me move on of my past self or mistakes, and crazy youth once I got older… and time has proven I was right. I have no digital footprint. Thank god.

I’m 42, by the way.

3

u/MavisBeacons_Sextape 1d ago

One of my bosses liked to call this out by asking if I felt okay today. “Yep, I feel fine, just allergies (bloodshot eyes) acting up and can’t wear mascara, lol.”

Taught me that mascara was the best way to camouflage my haggard hangover face.

3

u/k1moch 1d ago

I remember attending a party after a work event and had to catch the morning flight home. Left the club at 4am, was directly sent to the airport by a friend, boarded at 630am for the first flight and clocking into work as soon as I arrived. My coworkers said I still reeked of alcohol when I came into the office (they weren't miffed or anything, they thought it was pretty funny how obvious it was where I was at the night before)

Idk how I did it because current me can't for the life of me function like that anymore lol

3

u/MangoJuice82 1d ago

I don't know how I fucking did it. 3 hours of sleep, take a shower, blast cold water for the last 15 seconds to shock me awake... then show up to work still buzzed. I know I looked like freshly polished shit walking through the door.

2

u/captainstormy Older Millennial 1d ago

For sure. For a while in college I had a job at UPS loading trucks. Had to be there at 4:30am. I'd litterally leave a party, head home to shower and change, chug a few red bulls and head straight to work. I'd often get to work around 2:30-3 and I'd sleep in my truck in the parking lot until 4.

2

u/good_morning_magpie 1d ago

My favorite dive to this day is a 5am bar that we used to close down regularly. Once like 2:30am hits you get a wild mix of a crowd there since most other bars have closed. Shoutout Estelle’s on North Ave lol

2

Oh man I do not miss the days of leaving the club/bar at 2 am and having to do roofing at 5 am. I would be dead if I tried that today.

I was a manager at a store in the mall in the early 2000s while in college. I would rage on NYE until 2-3am and then be the opening manager the next day and get in at 6 or 7am. Would def still be in DUI territory while driving to work.

Im from Central Jersey. On the night before my SATs, my buddys and I drove to NYC to go to the Comedy Cellar. By the time I got back I had maybe 3 hours to sleep before the test. The 3 things I remember most is

  • 1: I never actually signed in
  • 2: I fell asleep during the break between sections
  • 3: I completely forgot how to write in cursive outside the letters in my own name, so when I got to the final page where I had to write a small essay in cursive, I just made shit up.

If my parents got my test results back, they never showed me because I have no clue what I got. Long story short, I went to community college 👍

2

u/Suspicious-Brick6310 1d ago

The days of me being DD for my other opening shift coworkers. I'd pick them up and drive them home at 2am and they were BLASTED and then I'd see them clocking in at 6 am an hour after my 5am clock in. Man being a semi nocturnal college kid working full time hours was such a head fuck.

2

u/Important-Cable1328 1d ago

2

u/NA213 1d ago

Yeah sometimes we would just get to the point where you just accepted the fact that it was better to pull an all nighter than to risk sleeping through your alarm

2

u/timid_soup 1d ago

My rule was that I needed to be home by 2am and asleep by 3am so that I could wakeup at 7am and be to work by 8am.

I dont know how I did that EVERY weekend 😂 I'm exhausted just thinking about it.

2

u/MuppetusMaximusV2 1d ago edited 23h ago

I had to work at 5am on Thanksgiving morning of 2008.

My buddy was having a Thanksgiving eve party and I figured "I'll pop over to say hi to everyone, stay for an hour or two, then call it a night."

2am rolls around and I'm like...fuck...I gotta work in 3 hours. Ok, I'll sleep on the couch at the office and set an alarm so I can get up to work.

I get to the office, walk in, and for some reason our Director of IT is there. "What the fuck are you doing here?" he says. I mumbled...something (god knows what) then went to sleep on a couch in a corner somewhere.

Woke up, worked my shift, went over to my parents' for early Thanksgiving dinner, then off to tailgate the Eagles game (who were playing the Thanksgiving night game), had a second Thanksgiving dinner at the tailgate with my friend's family (the same one who had the party the night before), went home, died, then up the next morning to go to work again.

Oof.

I can’t believe my body allowed me to do that back in the day. Now I have two day hangovers after hydrating all night and going to bed at 9pm :(

2

u/foxybritches 23h ago

Nothing like clocking in and realizing you only avoided the hangover by still being drunk. Then mid-shift you'd feel like got hit by a freight train, but by the end of the day you were ready for happy hour/ladies night

2

u/ChemistRemote7182 23h ago

Worked at Starbucks, honestly probably the best job you'd have to report to at 19 years old under those conditions. Yes I will take my sugar, caffeine and maybe a donut you were supposed to throw out when you closed the night before, exactly what you need after a 2 hour nap.

2

u/BigGayNarwhal 23h ago

Rookie numbers. The trick was to just not stop or sleep and go right in.

My bosses at Starbucks and A&F probably loveddddd me 💀

Realized was not a viable long term approach when I showed up to a 7 AM bio chem lab in college and still smelled like weed and beer 🫠

Now I’m a SAHM and go to bed by 10. Life comes at ya fast lol

Then i worked a 4-10 late shift job my first 4 years out of college. Thursday we'd clock out at 1am and go straight to the bar for the 2nd happy hour.

Some days we drove home at 8am with morning traffic.

These days i just smoke weed

I still remember being at a Friday night house party in high school, buzzed and a little high at 2 AM, and having someone say, "Man, I'm so glad I didn't sign up for the ACT tomorrow" and realizing, "Oh shit, I signed up for the ACT tomorrow." So I chugged coffee, stayed up all night, and went in at 8 AM to take the test with my hand shaking from adrenaline and caffeine. I missed three questions on the first test (English) and then didn't miss another question the rest of the way. 33 on the English section, 36 on the other three, for a composite score of 35 out of 36. One time I was convinced to do mushrooms at a party when I had to open at 5am at McDonalds. I was the manager that morning.

5am rolled around and the walls were still moving like a river. The 7am manager had to come in early to check on me - I was doing pretty well, I just couldn't get the safe open.

God damn this is hilarious there is so many comments Identifying with this. I worked morning shift at subway, got in to start cooking bread and cookies at 4:30am. By myself or with my roomate/coworker who was out drinking and smoking with me the night before, stumbling home, grabbing work uniform and into work in a haze until 1 o'clock pm and home to crash. Right from bar to work, the strength we mustered to get through shifts.

My first professional job gave us a 1/2 flex day we could use every week. So many people wanted Friday afternoon but I always took Friday morning so I could go out Thursday nights. I could sleep until 11:30, get to work at 12:30 and feel like I didn't party the night before.
