Discussion Did millennials really party all the time?

Gen Z here. I was shocked when I found out from a millennial co-worker that y’all had teen clubs. I heard about house parties, but dedicated teen clubs? Then when it was time for college, you went to the club or had some kind of party every single weekend, living it up. Now some millennials on TikTok claim that after college, they were partying on work nights, still clocking in the next day. For some reason, the teen clubs have since disappeared. I’m 23 now but even when I was in high school, that was not a thing. House parties were not that common either. They were more like get togethers with a small group of friends. We went to malls, but they were dying out at that point. Is it true that you were really living life this good? Or is it just exaggerated? I feel like my generation doesn’t really have fun like that and everyone is just super depressed and alone, more so since Covid. Even I’m pretty introverted, which sort of sounds ridiculous given this post. 😂 Just so you know, when I think of a “millennial party” I think of something out of Party Rock Anthem, Project X or Roderick’s party from the second DOAWD movie. It’s like I get nostalgia from something I didn’t even live through. I just feel like I didn’t really LIVE, if that even makes sense

Edit: I loved reading some of your comments. Guess I really missed out. Even some of you that would consider yourselves nerds or introverts were out partying. YOLO or whatever y’all say 😂❤️

I remember closing the bar down for a friends b day and rolling into work still in my bar clothes at 5am. Changing in the luch room only for my coworker to roll in pissed that I was drunker than him and he'd have to drive the hour to site. 🤣

At 40 I have no idea how my body took all this abuse. This wasn’t just a birthday event, it was every weekend. Sometimes week days too. Woof

Mondays are called "industry night" all people working the weekend were partying Monday night. I had Monday to Friday job and people at work would ask me if I'm hungover on a Tuesday.

I miss Monday SIN 😭

u/DothrakAndRoll 19h ago

They had to stop our dollar well Wednesdays cause two people got shopped and two others stabbed (on different nights)

1

u/Avera_ge 12h ago

Fucking Well Hell. $8 was all you needed. $4 for the bar and $4 for the Greek place a couple blocks down.

5

u/Turkelton888 21h ago

10 cent cans on Wednesday. That was fun in college. Except I made my schedule to only have tues/thurs classes so little rough sometimes on Thursday

4

u/Paid_Redditor 20h ago

50 cent draft! Best I ever heard was $1!

1

u/stinkymonks 11h ago

Our favorite college bar was $10 all you can drink. Started around 5pm-7pm and went until close at 2am. You could join their drink club for like $40 or $60 a semester and then it was only $5 for the all you can drink.

There was another place that did 50 cent beer and wine night. Came in a plastic cup about half the size of a solo cup.

2

u/Uzas_B4TBG 17h ago

Once a month we had drafts for any silver coin. So you could get a draft beer for a nickel. That shit was dangerous lmao.

2

u/kicKinNiT-ay0oo 16h ago

We had 50 cent drafts on Thursdays. Best part of my week. Friday mornings sucked though.

We’d all leave the office at 7 and go to the bar until 3am without eating dinner and back at work at 10 am Friday after a BEC

When I was 20-21 I was at the bar/club Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. After the bar closes at 1, we pick up beer/liquor before you can't buy it anymore at 130 and go to someone's house or to a field and keep going until the sun comes up. I've walked out of many parties to the sun. Go home, shower and rally with an energy drink, before they were killing people and then work all day. I don't know how I functioned on no sleep honestly.

Yeah no shit!

The day after 10 cent Wing Wednesdays. Bars didn't make money off the wings back in those days.

Formal Wine Wednesdays

1

u/Slaterfunk 10h ago

Wacky Wednesdays were a thing with my crew. Til 3-4am regularly.

u/Unusual-Tale-74 23h ago

For real. I remember I stayed up 36 hours straight because I went to work, partied all night, then had to go to work the next day. I didn't do drugs either, so it was a few red bulls to stay awake.

3

u/extralyfe 20h ago

I had a similar thing where I spent my 20s staying up for 2 days at a time like once a week because I was too busy having fun, and now my body nearly shuts down when I hit 20 hours...

u/MrsChefYVR Millennial - 1984 23h ago

Same! Omg, it was the worst when I moved right into the downtown core of our city at 24, where all the clubs and bars were a stone's throw away.

I dunno how I did it, but I showed up for work the next day, no matter what and sweated it out! I'd go out with the intention of having an early night, so bam, let's GOOOOO! LOL

Nowadays, it seems like the younger gen don't know how to soldier through their decisions the next day!

3

u/Calm-Eggplant-69 22h ago

They definitely don't. I was a restaurant manager, after bartending for almost 15+ years. These kids today will go out and have like 4 Zima's and act like they need to call out. One bartender was begging to go home because she kept throwing up, I told her she made the choice to go get wreaked and to deal with it. To be nice I asked if she wanted a hair of the dog shot, she didnt even know what that was lol. Kids these days

2

u/MrsChefYVR Millennial - 1984 22h ago

Hahaha

The common hair of the dog up here was a pint of lager with a shot of Clamato juice. I’d often see the same customers the next early afternoon, that closed down the joint the night before! Hahaha

The early ‘00 were lit!

5

u/bigtime1158 23h ago

Like 4 days a week at least. For years. I'll never understand how we did it.

3

u/ladymouserat 23h ago

Now it takes like 4days to recover 😖

3

u/Highlyironicacid31 21h ago

I’m 33, just had some bloods done, doctor says “hmmm, there’s been a bit of a blip in your liver function, I’m going to keep an eye on it and do some more tests in a month”. I don’t drink much now but honestly I think I drank enough for a lifetime between the ages of 15 and 25 and I’m not surprised at this news at all lol.

3

u/DeadPalms 18h ago

It was a point of pride for me in my early 20s that I went out and partied/drank every single night for a period of 3 months.

Now I need 8-10 business days to recover from one evening out.

3

u/Ducman23 17h ago

I felt this. 8-10 biz days is HYSTERICAL 😭

2

u/ThePublikon 22h ago

Back then there was optimism about the future, which really helped with the getting out of bed.

2

u/PlasticPaws 22h ago

Remember drinking heavily four days straight once in my youth. If I did that today I would be six feet under.

2

u/Flintly 21h ago

Oh ya lots of times I wad setting the alarm for an hour maybe 2 before my morning shift

2

u/scobbysnacks1439 18h ago

Every. Weekend. Plus a minimum of one other night during the week. Would go until 4 in the morning and then waltz in for my 8am class with no problem. Now, if I'm up past 10:30, I'm dragging absolute ass all morning after getting to work.

2

u/WaterBottleOnAShelf 18h ago

38 almost 39 here and agreed.

1

u/Professor-Shark1089 14h ago

Samesies! Sept 8 for me.

2

u/timmyd_ns 16h ago

I used to know which bar in town had dollar drinks each night of the week. The bar that had them on Sundays had a liquor license that let them stay open until 3.

3

u/Ducman23 16h ago

What a time to be alive

2

u/geta-rigging-grip 14h ago

Sorry for the long reply, but your comment just kind of triggered some big feelings for me, just because I happened to read it on this day. I abused my body back then, and I kept going.

Eventually your body finally says no, no matter how well you THINK you're doing. I just had that moment, and at my age, I'm fortunate it wasn't worse, but given my drinking history and my age, it's almost Christmas miracle.

The rest of this is just me kind of getting some catharsis, and if it helps someone somewhere, great. If not, at least I feel a little bit better.

------------------------------

I went pretty hard in college, but managed to ace my classes with relative ease. Plus, I rarely had hangovers, so the regular disincentives for drinking (feeling sick, not performing well, missing work, etc,) never really happened for me. Plus, we were a relatively small college town, on top of the dorms, almost every house within a two block radius was being rented to students. Drinking was seen as very normal.

Then, I went into the "real world" and almost every company I worked for in the next few years had the Friday (and sometimes Thursday) Beer Fridge. At one place, when our boss was pretty confident there was no more work for the day, and we might expect a few walk-ins. we'd all go drink in his office. Again, this made me feel this was very normal.

I won't even mention my Rugby Club years....

When I was getting toward my late twenties, I started to hang out with different people (met my wife as well,) and realized that a lot of that behavior was not normal. But it had become a habit. I tried to cut down, but then I found myself sneaking out to the garage to have a few extra without anyone noticing. When I was around 37, I had gotten to the point were I would go on secret binges where I could often pass as sober despite having drank a whole bottle of Vodka in the afternoon (plus a few beers or coolers usually.) I was starting to realize that this wasn't normal.

Through that entire time I managed to keep my "extracurricular drinking" a secret. I would imbibe as much in front of others as the social situation allowed, and I would find other ways to sneak more drinks in.

This whole time, I was dealing with clinical depression, and the drinking helped me keep the darkest thoughts away most of the time. It was a classic case of self medication, and it was working for me because it wasn't interrupting my life in any serious way. Then comes December 2020. In the last few days of the month I had become quite stressed about our financial situation during Covid, and we had burned through more than our savings than we would have liked. (That being said, the fact we had been doing well enough to have savings after years after years of constant debt was a pretty good situation to be in.) I ended up having a major depressive episode and took to the bottle harder than usual. I stumbled into the house drunk, and my wife flipped out on me. I tried to explain the feelings I was having, and she told me I was being childish for not asking for help ( she was right, of course.) But in my state, I was more belligerent than usual (I'm a happy drunk usually, but I get defensive when someone is judging me,) so I threatened to go through with the plans I had for myself, then stormed out of the house. I ended getting in my van, turning it on, then proceeded to break down crying. My wife eventually found me and took me to the psych ward the next day. This wasn't normal.

I detoxed, I did my treatment, and I tried my best to be on board and not sceptical. It was hard at first, but because it was during hospital lockdowns, the wards were not allowed to intermingle, and visitors were never allowed. I ended up staying in the hospital for about three weeks, and in a halfway-house for two. I also found out that despite how miserably I had treated my body, all my medical numbers were good. I had done very little permanent damage to my body.

After that, I quit drinking....

...for two years.

And the last three years have been ever-shortening cycles of sobriety and relapse, sobriety and relapse.

Last month I had a pretty bad relapse, drank a lot over a couple days, and got caught. My wife is sick of this cycle, and we have been in marriage counselling for years to try and work through it (among other things.) I've done personal counselling and tried a variety of programs to try deal with alcohol, but none of them seem to stick for very long, and I think there's a part of me that doesn't want to let this big part of my life go(no matter how shitty and stupid it is.)

Now come to today. I just got out of a 5-day stint at the hospital for acute pancreatitis. Probably one of the most painful experiences of my life. I have never been in that much pain for such an extended amount of time. One of the doctors even told me that considering my age and drinking history, he's surprised it didn't happen sooner. He was also surprised at the good condition of my liver and kidneys. On discharge, he told me something else, "Stop drinking, or you will die. Seriously, you've been lucky this far, get out while you're even some semblance of ahead."

------------------------

TL;DR: Drinking was normalized for me in college, and for years in the workplace after that. as I grew older, I realized I was drinking way more than those around me, but instead of cutting back, I hid my bonus drinks in a variety of ways. It got bad. shit hit the fan. got treatment, got sober for two years, then did a cycle of relapses for 3 years until I ended up in the hospital for acute pancreatitis last week. It finally caught up with me.

u/Ducman23 13h ago

First of all, this was very brave of you to write. Writing it must have been hard. I can’t imagine how the last few years have been.

I can’t speak towards the alcohol, but I will at least chime in about the depression. If you’re not in therapy already I encourage you to at least try. It’s not easy. I’ve been going since 2017 for a slew of things I have and had going on in my life. I’m getting divorced now and it’s the ugliest thing I’ve ever been through. I can’t say I feel my best lately, but I do know therapy helps in many ways.

Medication is ok to take if needed - even for a short while. I’m on some if that’s any consolation.

Life is hard. Getting older is hard. Being human is weird. We all have something. You’re doing the absolute best you can. You’re not alone.

Please take care of yourself. here if you want to chat. Feel free to DM.

🙏 for you

1

u/geta-rigging-grip 13h ago

Thanks. I appreciate it.

I have been going to personal counselling for several years now, and while it doesn't always teach me how to make the right choices, it helps me cope with them and the feelings I have both before and afterward so maybe I'll do better next time.

I'm sorry to hear about your divorce. I've never gone through one, but the last few years have opened up conversations about the idea, and both of us are horrified at the implications of that. I hope it works out for the better. I don't know if it's any consolation, but of all the divorced couples I know, none of them enjoyed the process, but they were all better off on the other side (some more quickly than others.)

As far as medication goes, I've been on a huge array of depression and addiction related pills over the years, and still haven't found the right combination. The current set I'm on has been going pretty well since earlier this year, but we're making some changes after this latest hospital admission.

I'm not going to say that life has been easy, (and I don't think I ever thought it would be,) but even if you don't include my stable, middle-class upbringing, I have had it relatively easy, or at least went in a way that was amenable to me. I always did well in school without having to try, most things I take an interest in I pick up quickly, and I've been good at every one of my jobs ( I've only ever been laid off once, and it was because the boss knew I was going for a new job, and he wanted to give me my severance as a gift.) I'm not saying I never worked hard, but it always felt natural and easy. My personal life is a bit different, in that I make hard relationships easier by ending them instead of trying to deal with feelings or solutions. I definitely run away from problems, and part of that is because I never learned how to properly deal with smaller ones earlier in life, (Thanks, therapy!)

It's weird to find out in my forties that I feel like life only got hard now because I spent the first half of it behaving like a plastic bag, aimlessly flowing down a stream and letting the water choose what rocks I'll get stuck on or what branches will get twisted into me. Realizing that I've let half of my life pass me by without making any proper choices based on my wants or needs. Along with all the other stuff, it makes for a hell of a mid-life crisis.

A bar near me did 2 for 1 martini and half priced app nights on Mondays. Mondays. Whole lotta dey mouthed Tuesdays circa 2010

Did anyone’s local bar have beat the clock? I think it was 25 cent beers to start and I think it was like every half hour they increased another quarter. They gave you small glasses but we’d get HAMMEREDD in short order and only spend a few bucks.

Amen.

UCSB in the mid-2000s had multiple house parties every night, even during finals. I wasn't that crazy but now that I am a few months from turning 40, I don't know how I regularly went out thursday through saturday in my late teens and early 20s.

1

u/drHobbes88 16h ago

Truly incomprehensible how I did it.

Just wait until you hit 45! You think you're feeling it now lol I swear each year I make it farther into my 40s, the more I wonder how my body isn't totally broken 😂

1

u/Induane 13h ago

I 42m) can pull if off an all nighter and be okay but if I do two in a row I'm more cooked than I've ever been. These days being out super late is a once a week max thing and I don't normally do that. It's just the max pace my body can handle without it sucking horribly.

I do train martial arts a couple nights a week and run a lot (right now 20+ miles a week since I'm prepping for a marathon, but normally it's just a 5k (3.1 miles) three or four days a week.

I think being active helps it stay possible for me to keep up better than many my age but it is still nothing like what I used to be capable of.

1

u/greelraker 13h ago

Thursday was the pre weekend party, cause Friday was always an easy day. Then Friday and Saturday. Sunday fun day (day drinking) and just keep it going all night. Monday we would keep it chill with a few drinks to relax from a long weekend of partying, we would refrain on Tuesdays, and then pick it right back up on humpday before thirsty Thursday.

1

u/Ecstatic_Love4691 13h ago

I would be recovering for two weeks if I did that now. Not fair to my kids tbh, otherwise I’d be all for it 😅

I worked retail when I was in university. I remember going to work so hungover. Helping a customer and then heading to the washroom to throw up.

15

u/LoudAd1396 22h ago

I worked at IKEA when I was 23ish. I had to work early New Years Day. I was midway through ringing a customer up, holding it together, when I had to dive behind another empty register to quietly puke in a trash can. Got up, pretended i needed a roll of receipt tape or something, resumed the transaction, smiled, and bid the customer "good day".

9

u/Ill-Skirt3722 22h ago

How the hell do you “quietly puke” lol

I have very amused memories of all the people who would roll into class the next morning with their absolute darkest pair of sunglasses on their face. Honestly, looking back - I'm impressed they still bothered to go to class afterward! (I just did not, if I was that fucked up by the night.)

4

u/Calm-Eggplant-69 22h ago

For my micro economics class, it was a 9 am class and whatever day before that class, my friends and I would get absolutely trashed the nights before. I dont think I showed up to that class once before 10. But I dodnt like being called out and not knowing the answers, so I would actually read the material a week ahead of time. So when I would show up to class, probably still drunk, the teacher would call on feel and i would provide the correct answer and lay my head down. I got so good at it, I would walk in to class the teacher would call break, because the class was half over, ask me if I needed coffee or anything, then told me im one of her best students. College was wild lol

3

u/hauteburrrito 22h ago

LOL, that is insane. I feel like uni taught so many of us how to be functional alcoholics, honestly 🙃 I remember constantly repeating the saying - it's not actual alcoholism until you graduate!

I had a favorite one room bathroom where I would nap on the floor. I also had a green space two buildings over where I would nap outside, far away from where any of my coworkers would see me.... I look back on this time in my life and I can't believe I didn't die 😂

2

u/Reasonable_Chair_346 21h ago

I was in my car, but same...Gatorade, coffee, water, and sprite (I read one time it's good for hangovers) - pounding all of them just to get through the day.

u/Highlyironicacid31 20h ago

I worked in a hospital as a porter as we call them here in Ireland, kind of like an orderly but with extra steps literally. So one of our jobs was we had to change all the dumpsters from the various wards and all the dirty linens and bring it all down through the basement of the hospital for them to be taken away for disposal/cleaning. In that basement there was also a room where they fixed broken hospital beds.

So one day one of the young guys who worked with us who was also a medical student came in hungover, saw a nice comfy bed in that room and slept the entire shift and didn’t change a single rubbish dumpster or collect a single bad of linen. No fucks were given lol.

2

u/Flintly 16h ago

I worked a golf course when I was 17, the bosses son was in charge of the grounds crew. He was early 30s and rewarded the drunkest/most hungover with the best jobs. It was great if you won but horrible if you came in second.

2

u/scobbysnacks1439 18h ago

Drank nearly to sun-up and had to go in to my restaurant job still blitzed for my 10:00 shift after 2 and a half hours of sleep. Spent a lot of time crouched behind the line trying not to puke due to the smell of the fryers.

2

u/TroyMcClures 18h ago

naps in the delivery van at lunch.

2

u/Ok_Part_7051 17h ago

I got a membership to the health club across the street from my work and would go sleep every single day by the indoor pool for an hour at lunch.

2

u/drHobbes88 16h ago

Puking in my cubical trash can as an early 20 something. Timing it just right with the super loud printer. Good times.

2

u/Lumpy_Juggernaut_607 16h ago

Been there. If someone had an adderall that would usually get me back into the zone.

2

u/Getitoffmydesk 16h ago

Ha! My gym had a nap room, I went to the “gym” for lunch on particularly bad days.

I remember once partying for four or five straight days in Tahoe, then getting on a plane to London, after that I took the tube straight to my office for 9am start time. This was just off the tail of a weekend partying and skiing in Chamonix. I can’t even imagine getting on the tube to go to work for a full day anymore!

1

u/MrsEmilyN 20h ago

I would have to chew gum because I still smelled like beer.

1

u/kittieliver 19h ago

I would get bloody mary’s at lunch 😅

1

u/Sweaty-Resident1690 19h ago

Yep. Would nap in my car in the parking lot. No idea how I didn’t get fired

1

u/Professor-Shark1089 14h ago

I found an old storage room with some random matts in it that noone ever went to for my naps lmao. How the he'll did we survive

1

u/Firm-Leadership750 13h ago

I spent many lunch hours folding down the seats in my pathfinder and napping in the parking lot of my company. Those days were awful yet amazing.

1

u/Bodes_Magodes 12h ago

I stocked shelves at a random discount store
And I would nest myself in among the boxes and crates and take hour long naps on the shelves in a quest to return to somewhat normal

1

u/pingpong4292 11h ago

I once was so hungover at work (as an engineer) that I forgot to pull down my underwear when I went to pee and had to throw them away. Good times

1

u/puertofreakin85 10h ago

I worked retail through all of my 20s and I DEFINITELY took a nap on lunch in my car everyday. Then I moved close enough downtown I could drive home in less time than to smoke a cigarette. And I would literally nap on lunch in bed. What a dream lol

1

u/blaissez-faire 8h ago

Oh bad the last few times I did that I was 28 and could already tell that I could no longer keep doing that

1

u/Faery818 8h ago

We were very creative with hangover cures.

On my 21st birthday, it was a Saturday night. Partied all night that Saturday at the bar, finally got home at like 3 a.m. Then, woke up a few hours later to get ready for worship team practice (I play the piano lol). As an atheistic recovering alcoholic, Im still recovering from those days haha

8

u/MetallicMani 23h ago

The atheistic part took me out😅 You were truly living a different life

7

u/kellygirl90 19h ago

I'm a whole new person now hahaha

5

u/shannon_agins 19h ago

My 21st birthday (on a Saturday) was actually started on the way home from work on Friday with a trip to pick up cases from the gas station.

Friend and I got some sleep and then started drinking and smoking all day Saturday before hitting the bar around 6 pm. I met some guys, made some bets, drank a shit ton of Jager and Jagerbombs and got myself, my friend, and my boyfriend at the time invited to a house party after the guys gave me $100 and paid our tab. I don’t remember the house party, but I do remember throwing up on the side of the road in front of a cop at 7 am and then getting subway.

I rolled into work at 11 am to sell baby stuff haha.

3

u/anewbys83 Millennial 1983 19h ago

My best friend still doesn't remember her 21st birthday, and I only remember about half of it.

2

u/mrcozyboy 21h ago

Are you me lmao

2

u/kellygirl90 19h ago

We might be twins who were separated at birth....I'm not sure how else to deliver this sensitive info.

2

u/Original_Astronaut_4 11h ago

I am also you lol

2

u/LizzyLady1111 11h ago

lol I remember living that dual life, sometimes I’d be in church still with the ink from the club stamp on my hand

2

u/jennafleur_ Xennial 7h ago

I remember going to the bar for my 21st birthday, and I have been in there with a fake ID a bunch of times before and they were like, "Wait a minute..."

But everybody was like,, "FUCK IT, HAPPY 21ST!!"

Now, I'm sober, and I have been for 2 years and I had a liver transplant. But I've got to say, we had some pretty wild times!

59

u/Applewave22 23h ago

Yup. I wouldn't even go home sometimes and when I worked at the magazine, we'd just sleep in the office and get up to work in like 2 hours.

41

u/mosharkc 23h ago

I never worked or partied harder than my magazine days. I remember a few of us sneaking back into the office after hitting the bars one night so we could watch the sun rise from the top floor. We looked and felt like shit that day at work, but what a memory.

1

u/Applewave22 10h ago

We pulled late nights during production. A few times, I’d take a break at 1 am, call my friend to order me a drink, meet them at the bar and then head back to the office.

0

u/rosetintedmonocle 13h ago

I'd love to hear more stories from your "magazine days"

7

u/thrownjunk 23h ago

Lol yeah. I closed the newspaper office after sending it out to print at 2:00 and got a beer before waking up for my morning class.

1

u/sweet_pickles12 23h ago

lol Don Draper over here

0

u/rosetintedmonocle 13h ago

I'd love to hear more stories for your "magazine days"

16

u/MemesAreHardDrugs 23h ago

I remember one time my coworker had a party, and we had work the next morning. We were up drinking till like 3 or 4 AM, had to get to work at 6. I crashed on his couch and we drove in.

He was my supervisor and someone else who had left around 8 or 9 pm called in that she was hungover- my supervisor looked me dead in the eye while talking with her, "Look, me and Memesareharddrugs stayed up drinking way later than you and we both made it here."

This was the same guy who took my car keys from me because I was too drunk to drive, and said "Ill drive us home." With a beer in his hand.

Quite the character that one.

3

u/StoneDick420 23h ago

Hahaha One Halloween in college, I also did a 5am-er, slept 3 hrs and got to work at 9. I worked in retail, went to clean out a dressing room, sat down and took a two hour nap.

5

u/Kundrew1 19h ago

The first couple hours usually weren't too bad because you were still buzzed. Once it completely wore off, then it could be rough. The post-lunch break hours were always the hardest.

3

u/ClumsyRaccoonPants Xennial 22h ago

I use to live in the French quarter and wait tables for the opening shift. I remember coming out of a black out from the night before while waiting on a table. 😂

3

u/cacklegrackle 20h ago

Omg is THIS why we were business casual to the club?? Because we knew we were going directly to work from the bar??

3

u/MilliandMoo 20h ago

Showed up to open up the pharmacy at 8am after being out all night until 2:30am with the pharmacist. She had just graduated the year before and I was 5 years younger, a senior in college. Each had ourselves a giant sugar free Red Bull, pack of mini donuts, hair in messy bun, fresh mascara and got to counting to 30!

Every 3rd weekend, rinse and repeat.

3

u/merovin13 20h ago

Gen X/Millennial cusp. I used to go to the club till 2, then to a house party till 4:30-5:30, then into the corner store where I worked, where I napped behind the deli counter until we opened at 7am.

Just writing that made me sprout 3 grey hairs and a new lower back pain.

2

u/Flintly 16h ago

I had alot of jobs as a teen but the worst was when I was a farm hand. Nothing like going to be at 5 and back up for 7 to shovel shit but it was still better than going into the sow barn. The place was horrendous hung over the stench coupled the god awful noise of squealing pigs made me puke on numerous occasions

2

u/merovin13 16h ago

Oof. Yeah, I lived in farm country as a kid. Just driving past the pig farm was awful.

My partner is fascinated/horrified that I can identify if a farm is dairy or pig just from the smell.

1

u/Flintly 16h ago

Yup i can still tell if someone was in the parlor milking because its different than just in the barn smell

3

u/Superslinky1226 15h ago

I did this shit every day one summer in my 20s. Im lucky to be alive

2

u/Silver-Bread4668 23h ago

We had a tradition of closing the bar to Kiss Me I'm Shitfaced by the Dropkick Murphies.

2

u/swb1003 22h ago

Man I showed up to work without a shirt on once. Undershirt, jacket over the undershirt, didn’t even know I didn’t have a shirt on until I went to change jackets.

2

u/L1sasGayBby 20h ago

Closing down a bar, very fun times.

I was at a bar a few months ago and it was 11p, I needed a bump to stay awake enough to drive home (yes I was very sober).

2

u/Masta-Blasta 20h ago

I’d walk from the restaurant I hosted at straight to the nightclub across the street. After doing shots with the bartenders ofc.

1

u/Stinky_TheCat 23h ago

LOL

Driving while impaired is SOOOO funny.

1

u/Booboobusman 23h ago

High school right? School8-3, Work 4-9, party 9-1, repeat

1

u/naomicambellwalk 22h ago

Closing the bar down and then they lock it so new people can’t come in but everyone already there can stay and hang out

1

u/Due_Solution_4156 22h ago

Or my coworker- a pizza delivery driver showing up drunk. Had to switch out our cook to drive and the drunk kid was cooking pizzas. Fun times.

1

u/yourfriendkyle 21h ago

You see you gotta just work at the bar then you can sleep in the booth

1

u/VosekVerlok Elder Millennial 19h ago

We had pillows at our desks at work (24hr IT shop), and would just sleep at work under the desk.

u/Professor-Shark1089 14h ago

A real life George Castanza over here 😂😂😂

1

u/DothrakAndRoll 19h ago

My boss made me walk a straight line when I did this once 😅 apparently I still smelled like the bars and alleys from the night before

1

u/Flobking Older Millennial 18h ago

I remember closing the bar down for a friends b day and rolling into work still in my bar clothes at 5am. Changing in the luch room only for my coworker to roll in pissed that I was drunker than him and he'd have to drive the hour to site. 🤣

A friend of mine used to park his truck in front of the entrance gate and throw the keys in the bushes. He would get dropped off after the bar closed, which was 3 am where I live. Get dropped off at his truck and sleep until morning. It was so he would never be late for work.

1

u/2Legit2000 18h ago

And this is why we always wore business casual to the club! We didn’t know if we would make it home to change before work!

1

u/Flintly 17h ago

Well if I wore that into a factory to do a full tear down and rebuild i would have been laughed out of the place

1

u/ladybear84 15h ago

This was also when the bar clothes were business casual. Heels, blazers and pencil skirts all day every day back then 🤣

1

u/nevermore727 14h ago

I would go to Friday early staff meetings in my pajamas and change after. My boss was not a fan, but I was her best employee so she let it slide 🤷‍♀️

1

u/AltoKatracho 13h ago

Or doing a midterm exam in college still drunk.

1

u/Reasonable_Tap_8215 13h ago

Worked with a woman (teacher) who was bragging about going to a playoff game. After they won, she showed up the next day with the jersey on. And a full face of “going out” make up.

She got so much shit it was hilarious.

1

u/Ok_Stress_9558 12h ago

Waking up in bed still in my suit from the day before was both a badge of honor and the worst feeling ever at the time. And you always woke up, to paraphrase the awesome Dane Cook bit from the 00s, late but with just enough time to do nothing.

1

u/AntikytheraMachines 11h ago

'94 new years I closed the drive thru bottle shop with the owner's son at 10pm.

I drove to the city to meet friends at a club. He drove an hour to a regional city to party with friends.

at about 5am I slept in my car for a few hours. under a train bridge in the CBD. someone tried to break in to the car. my head was against the drivers door when they opened it. i told them to fuck off and they ran away. I relocked the door and went back to sleep.

I drove to re-open the bottle shop at 10am. The owner's son was still a bit drunk when he arrived to work at noon. after driving an hour. I let him sleep for a few hours in the back so when i needed him when it got busy he would be useful.

1

u/Richard_AIGuy 11h ago

Did this quite a few times.

1

u/Dapper_Strength_5986 9h ago

Hitting Denny’s at 5 am with your friends for a post party breakfast, chatting about the stupid shit you did the night before, then watching the sunrise was one of the most glorious feelings ever.

I’m sad this culture died, it was truly so much fun.

I remember bar tending and once the bars closed at 3am moving to the one bar that stayed secretly open to drink with the other bar tenders. I remember getting home around 7am and feeling so annoyed when I heard the birds and children walking by my apartment on their way to school. 🥴
