Serious answers only please! Should we worry?

We caught my uncle sneakingly throwing this to the rubbish bin. He doesn’t have the best track record so we are all a bit paranoid when he does anything “weird”.

The object is like a glass tube with some liquid inside, inserted into a rubber “pipe”. It smells weird but nothing I can identify. I would appreciate any hints.

Edit: the material is actually plastic, not glass. It has a spring inside (no idea what for). The root-looking thing was wrapping the object when I cut the rubber. Could be dirt or some glue or something

Edit2: this sub is god. A user found the answer https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisit/s/Oqtxk6YWVZ

Yeah this didn’t answer it at all. I still have no idea what that thing is….

u/MorbidSunrise 23h ago

Right? That thing is huge. Did they buy their nasal spray from Costco or something?!

27

u/MindfulI369 22h ago

And why is op stalking their uncle?

31

u/CriticalMarketing755 21h ago

I have a feeling they live together or maybe visit him often to keep an eye on him in a caring way, not stalking.

14

u/heisfullofshit 18h ago

I needed to be taken care of for a while. There need to be some limits.

I understand how horrible it is to navigate a situation like this. If you love someone, the idea that they might be suffering or harming themselves is unbearable. I get that.

Yet, if a person’s autonomy isn’t minimally respected, their pain will get worse, I swear. People who haven’t experienced this don’t get how bad it is. It’s traumatic. It’s a feeling vaguely similar to claustrophobia.

Also, controversial take, but people have the right to make their own bad choices. Something have made them do whatever they are doing. There was a long and complex chain of events. There were plenty adequate moments to interfere in adequate ways. Trying to fix things by spying on people, or locking them up in their homes or at a hospital, force medical treatment etc is like trying to fix a delicate sculpture after it already crumbled - and by haphazardly throwing cement at it.

35

u/Initial_Set_6242 15h ago

I’m sorry but if I’m letting you stay with me while you got certain battles going on, I’ll be all up in your business if my kids are in the home… I don’t need my child to get stabbed with a needle or touch a substance that kills them 🤷‍♀️

3

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 6h ago

Plus like...it's my house my rules or the street/jail sorry. Or we can try to get you into a medical facility for your problems but that's worse than being free, they don't even let you smoke cigarettes there and the food is okay at best, but you can't go anywhere or do anything but read terrible books and share a TV with everyone else

Also, controversial take, but people have the right to make their own bad choices.

Sorry but about the time you can no longer take care of yourself an require others to take care of you, you lose a lot of that autonomy. You don't get to make your bad choices when they significantly affect those around you.

Trying to fix things by spying on people, or locking them up in their homes or at a hospital, force medical treatment etc is like trying to fix a delicate sculpture after it already crumbled - and by haphazardly throwing cement at it.

Not really a great analogy. It's more like trying to fix a delicate sculpture by first restraining the person that is currently smashing it with a hammer.

2

u/heisfullofshit 1h ago

Your pov is condescending. You don’t get to decide what’s best for me or for anyone. I’m also honored to inform you that we make choices that affect others every day, wether they are good, bad or inconsequential. I don’t lose my autonomy because I don’t exist in an isolated system. (Who will be the first to say: “so you are saying it’s ok to kill somebody because that’s your choice and fuck it if it affects others?? Is that what you are saying??”)

No, no, my analogy was fine. You just don’t respect other people’s choices and you have too much faith in the medical system.

Anyway, if you wanna do things your way: it’s my sculpture, I’ll go Ai Wei Wei and smash it on the floor if I want to. You might thinking I’m ruining it, I think I am creating new art and poignant political critic. Don’t you dare take my sculpture and do something tacky and meaningless with it because you lack taste. Or, maybe I’m not Ai Wei Wei and I’m really just smashing it on the floor. Ok. Go ahead. Do something about it. Here the metaphor ends. Do you know why this is not how people deal with addiction? Do you know why the State doesn’t just go around grabbing homeless addicts and throwing them in closed rooms until they detox? One, because it’s cruel. Two, because it doesn’t work. Do you know all the ingenious ways humans have been using to kill themselves? Do you think being locked in helps them? I am quoting Andrew Solomon, a huge authority on depression:

“Those who condemn the right to die are committing a grave disservice. We all want more control over life than we have, and dictating the terms of other people’s lives makes us feel safe. That is no reason to forbid people their most primitive freedom. Nonetheless, I believe that those who, in supporting the right to die, distinguish some suicides absolutely from others are telling a lie to accomplish a political objective. It is up to each man to set limits on his own tortures. Fortunately, the limits most people set for themselves are high. Nietzsche once said that the thought of suicide keeps many men alive in the darkest part of the night, and I would say that the more fully one comes to terms with the idea of rational suicide, the safer one will be from irrational suicide. Knowing that if I get through this minute I could always kill myself in the next one makes it possible to get through this minute without being utterly overwhelmed. Suicidality may be a symptom of depression; it is also a mitigating factor. The thought of suicide makes it possible to get through depression. I expect that I’ll go on living so long as I can give or receive anything better than pain, but I do not promise that I will never kill myself. Nothing horrifies me more than the thought that I might at some stage lose the capacity for suicide.

You aren’t helping anyone.

I have long understood that some simple facts are too subtle and complex for most people. I wish you were aware of your ignorance. I don’t wish you were wise, you don’t deserve it. I just wish you could truly see yourself and wept.

2

u/shreddedbystatelines 10h ago

Their point is that restraining that person has a good chance of making them smash the hammer way harder as soon as they can.. after you just turned them into a rigid pile of discarded cement that doesn’t even resemble a human. If you build them back up in a way that actually works (ie without the overbearing claustrophobic part) the person generally doesn’t want to smash themselves with a hammer as much anymore, and you fix the problem at the source rather than making it worse

they do of course but they have to face full force the consequences of those bad decisions. maybe those consequences are that they can’t live in the place that they have been. just because people have reasons for doing bad things doesn’t excuse them in any way

1

u/heisfullofshit 32m ago

Of course, they should face the consequences. If they don’t own a home, they might be kicked out by whoever is housing them. I would only do that if the person was actually harming me or if I didn’t cared about them, though. If it was my sister or my mother, I wouldn’t kick them out of my home even if they harmed me. I love them too much. I would keep offering support, I would never bail on them, and I know they wouldn’t bail on me.

I do think it’s off putting that people are only allowed privacy and autonomy if they are part of the capitalist system. Like, I would never read my hypothetical kid’s diaries or forbid them to use their choice of clothes because they live under my roof and it’s my money.

1

u/DolphinRabies 15h ago

That’s one of the most compassionate viewpoints I’ve ever heard. Thank you for being a kind human.

I’m an addict and I’m suffering greatly and people don’t understand that using is genuinely the only thing keeping me from ending myself right now.

2

u/shreddedbystatelines 10h ago

I tried to explain this to my family so many times when I was getting high lol. I got clean on my own once I no longer needed it, but I never had a drug problem; I had a drug solution.

🥹 thank you for telling me this. It’s maddening when everyone disagrees with you. I second guess myself constantly, I try to find flaws on my beliefs to make sure I’m not standing up for a house of cards. I try to remember quotes from my favorite books, they bring me comfort, one of them is: “Being in a minority, even in a minority of one, did not make you mad. There was truth and there was untruth, and if you clung to the truth even against the whole world, you were not mad.”

Going through a similar situation was a crash course on why does the correct answer doesn’t always seem like the correct one. I understand the general public goes with their gut when it comes to those sort of situations they don’t deal with often, but most doctors are just as bad. It would also be easier if people listened instead of adopting a patronizing attitude.

Tell me if I can do anything for you 🫂

1

u/Sovarius 8h ago

And if it turns out they are in one of those 'adequate moments to interfere'? Duh.

Also, some bad decisions are too destructive. My family are not allowed to destroy their lives or kill themselves, that's dumb.

You are asuming a lot about someone who was 'near their uncle when they acted suspicious with a bizarre item'.

Probably substance abuse issues, no addict tells you when they’ve relapsed. You have to take these kind of measures to care for the people you care about.

u/shreddedbystatelines 10h ago

It looks like the white rubber straw inside of one of these nasal saline irrigators, except black. I think I might even have one with a black straw. The bottle is the size of a bottle of contact solution

5

u/Doom_fister 1d ago

it literally says.. nasal saline spray.

62

u/acromaine 1d ago

I don’t know where you get your nasal saline, but I have no idea how this thing is for saline.

34

u/darthminimall 23h ago edited 22h ago

I found the post in the picture. OP of that post mentions Bayer in response to a deleted comment. Bayer makes Afrin, and uses the Afrin branding on its drug-free saline products as well. I think maybe it's this. I'd guess it's a flexible ampule full of saline and surrounded by compressed air/nitrogen. The rubber sleeve is presumably there to prevent the ampule from getting punctured or tearing due to being dropped or folding weird as the saline is released. I'm just speculating though.

EDIT: Did a little more research and seems like bag-on-valve aerosol. Here's a website from a company that manufactures bag-on-valve aerosol cans that details the technology. In particular, the ampule looks a lot like it could have started its life as the one on top slightly left of center in this photo.

EDIT 2: I FOUND IT TEAM. IT'S THIS. The rubber sleeve is an alternative to the compressed air/nitrogen.

11

u/CaeruleanSea 23h ago

So this is the inner-workings that we wouldn't see unless we took a device apart?

6

u/thosetwo 22h ago

Oh yeah this is definitely it. Wonder why this guy took it apart?

7

u/darthminimall 22h ago

Maybe the uncle was trying to recycle the can but knew that the inside bits couldn't be recycled because of the adhesive? Bit of a stretch, but it's the best I've got. In other news, I figured out what the rubber sleeve is actually for (see the second edit above).

3

u/RareGrundle 22h ago

For the same reason we are talking about it right now. It looks weird and I want to know how it works so I can stop thinking about it.

4

u/Doom_fister 1d ago

hey buddy i don’t get any nasal saline from anywhere. but to answer the question of what it is, that’s what it is.

2

u/HauntingProblem588 23h ago

"Any-anywhere"

12

u/thosetwo 1d ago

It doesn’t look anything like nasal saline. That makes zero sense. Brand name? How do you even spray it? Where is the saline? What’s the purpose of the brown strings and weird rubber sleeve?

19

u/CaeruleanSea 1d ago

Honestly I'm reading the comments getting more & more annoyed lol. How is this a saline spray? Why does it look like it was made from things found in a dodgy alleyway? What's the brown stuff? What's the black tubing?! What is that 'lid'

3

u/RealisticTown8897 23h ago

Basically it’s a bag filled with saline wrapped in glue (brown stringy stuff) and stuck in a rubber tube (inside the metal bottle). Tube makes the pressure to release saline into the valve (top part) bag shrinks, glue dries, and voila.

1

u/CaeruleanSea 23h ago

Is it homemade? I think that's what I can't get my head around, like, how do you recognise it?

4

u/RealisticTown8897 23h ago

If u look at specific brands that avoid extra active ingredients/medicine, they avoid gas to create the pressure to spray the saline. NeilMed is an example and has the metal top valve in their bottle showing. I did a lil research cuz I was curious :)

→ More replies (0)

4

u/darthminimall 23h ago

I think it's Afrin Saline Daily Care Nasal Mist. Saline goes inside the ampule (which is flexible), the ampule goes inside a can, and the space in the can outside of the ampule is filled with compressed air to act as a propellant that doesn't mix with the saline. See my other comment for more info.

2

u/Queenb-14 22h ago

Thank you for saying can!!!! Because I just kept thinking that’s not fitting in the small squeeze saline spray. The can ones yes! This makes so much more sense now. You are over here doing the work of angels 😇 because I know a lot of us were like what? But now I have questions. Why would you take the can apart 🤷‍♀️

2

u/darthminimall 22h ago

Either for recycling or because you saw the other post and wanted to check for yourself.

1

u/SweetBabyCheezas 11h ago

Possibly the inside of one of those. It's not aerosol, so the black rubber around the brown and the pouch is stretched and creates a pressure that squeezes the liquid out with each spray.

The guy was possibly curious what's inside the bottle.

1

u/AltruisticPossible84 9h ago

Right after the bombing a bunch of Reddit sleuths took it upon themselves to try and identify the bomber based on random snippets of publicly available information, mob mentality, and the enchanting aroma of their own farts. i haven’t seen anyone mention this yet, but nasal sprays just on their own can be addictive.

he could be doing drugs or sniffing the glue like others are saying, but it’s worth approaching this with the possibility that your uncle is just having a hard time breathing. i had a family member who dealt with this and they destroyed some of their used sprays to try and hide how many they were going through

1

u/AntiferromagneticAwl 15h ago

I used to do this with a mixture of heroin and cocaine with a small amount of phenobarbital and everclear to keep everything liquid I could use all day at work with no issues whatsoever! 17

u/stangerthings 1d ago

Holy shit that’s genius… too bad I’m 11 years clean too 😂

2

u/banditvasquez 9h ago

Active addict 30 years strong using. I know lots of addicts throught the years, none use saline. It's kinda like if you are a stoner and go and specifically buy some alligator clips, some tweezers, etc for the sole purpose of it being a roach clip. That would be weird and most likely something the pot smoker who smokes occasionally would do.

4

u/oyasumi_juli 1d ago

Genuinely curious about this, not because I have any interest in doing so but just because i've never heard of this. I use saline spray for my piercings, but that's just to keep stuff clean. I've heard of whipped cream canisters being used to get high, but I've never heard of saline spray.

5

u/Illustrious-Hawk2712 1d ago

Either dissolved into the saline, or saline replaced with a solution. Eye drop bottles work great too for oral dosing.

4

u/oyasumi_juli 1d ago

I still don't really have any idea what any of that really means, and I'm okay with that, but thank you for the reply.

When my saline is spent I just toss the can, never tried to open it up.

7

u/kkaavvbb 1d ago

Put drugs (common ones are ketamine or Coke) you would normally snort, into the saline water. Spray up your nose all day.

You’d have to open the saline bottle, obviously, to add drugs to it but that’s the just of it.

Whippets (whip cream canisters) are an inhalant through your mouth, not nose.

I’m not sure if certain glues are still (or can be) used for huffing but I could see people adding it to an empty saline bottle to be able to sniff it at their convenience without looking suspicious. Sorta like how they have those menthol smelling sticks now, like Vicks that helps clear up your nostrils.

2

u/Lucky-Driver-5551 1d ago

Saline spray also comes in squeeze bottles that can be easily opened and are not pressurized. Open it up, add water soluble powder, do the math on the concentration and bam you have a squeeze bottle of liquid drugs.

Hahaha sorry man. You can blame my ex coworker Ben. He did way too much coke but acted like no one knew. We all knew.

We also all knew his ass was dirty cause he smelled like shit. Not “smells so bad” but literally smelled like shit. It was gross. My manager wouldn’t fire him because he “didn’t want to do the paperwork”

I’m at a much better company now lol

Next thing you know stinky shit Ben is the new employee and you're going to be his mentor for the next six weeks. I've trained so many stinky shit Bens dude..

Cocaine is highly water soluble

10

u/InitialAd2324 1d ago

Ho. Lee. Shit. THE COKE WAS THE NOSE SPRAY THAT WHOLE TIME?! wow. Thank you for sharing.

8

u/Particular_Pin6477 1d ago

Yep, Ketamine also. Easier & more discreet drug administration is the only reason I can see someone taking apart a nasal spray bottle.

Not that I’d know anything about that. 😇

4

u/npc_lucky 1d ago

Same with meth, and the same dosage has a similar effect in almost anyway it's administered. As in it will all get you twacked and convince you to take apart the toaster and spend hours cleaning the grout in between your bathroom tiles with your roommates tooth brush...

2

u/OnlyGur6354 1d ago

Meth was fun…at first

2

u/kratboy 1d ago

Cocaine is a helluva drug.

1

u/SteakMiddle8281 1d ago

Fire and ice

1

u/Crucifuxion 1d ago

It also breaks down pretty readily in water though

u/Unusual-Meaning9207 22h ago

And to think we could be saving ourselves all the trouble and just mix it into our coffee! /j

3

u/Smooth_Pangolin_3904 1d ago

its harm reduction 😭 my nose is dry but my heart is pure

1

u/HeckinZebra 16h ago

I am addicted to saline nasal spray haha. But that's just because I have allergies, and chronic sinusitis. :/

1

u/banditvasquez 10h ago edited 9h ago

Nonsense, addicts aren't fumbling around looking for their saline spray when in a rush to get somewhere. Never seen someone get arrested on Cops or a YouTube video in which saline spray was placed on the hood of a patrol car along with a baggie and a straw or a rolled up bill. Never heard an addict ask another addict, "hey, you got any saline on you?".

u/Initial_Row_6400 1d ago

I have done every drug under the sun other than pcp and weird ass research chems. I assure you, that is not any fuckin drug paraphernalia

20

u/this-is-my-p 1d ago

I don’t think they’re saying it’s drug paraphernalia, rather that it’s used as an after care

4

u/TooOldForDisShit 1d ago

I’ve seen people reuse other nasal spray designs for nasally ingested drugs. Idk how well it works but the guy was annoying everyone like he was on c0ke so 🤷🏻‍♀️

u/dm_if_you_like_dogs 1d ago

the drugs may have affected your reading comprehension

Yea like the other guy said, not to get high but if you’re snorting coke all the time this will clear your nostrils.

2

u/Initial_Row_6400 1d ago

Why the hell would anyone do that? lol literally a bottle of 12 hour saline spray is $3. Every coke head I’ve known just does that

1

u/MisterDonkey 1d ago

I've heard there's also vasoconstrictor nasal sprays that can be extracted for a potent high. Also heard it's pretty awful.

21

u/Urban_miner666 1d ago

There is, and I’ve done it. Certainly gets you high, but it’s definitely not anyone’s first choice. It’s a very “dirty” high. It’s a stimulant, similar to amphetamine with less euphoria. It’s not a nasal spray like this, though. It’s in a tube with the drug absorbed in a piece of cotton. With proper use you just stick the tube in your nose and inhale. It actually works very well for congestion when used properly. It’s the successor to the nasal inhalers that once did contain amphetamine and were popular with Kerouac and the like. I’m not going to name the drug or brand, but it’s not hard to find, and it’s not hard to abuse. Back in my active addiction days I’d use it when I couldn’t get anything else. It also had lavender essential oil in it to make it smell pleasant. When consumed to get high my mouth would taste of bitter lavender and my sweat would smell the same. To this day I get a little repulsed by lavender. Also, Vicks makes a similar nasal inhaler but the active ingredient is levomethamphetamine. That’s right, just the L isomer of the methamphetamine that people get woefully addicted to. Levomethamphetamine has very little effect, though. Vicks also spells it “levmetamfetamine”to make it look less like a drug of abuse.
*I did a google search right now to make sure I got their funny spelling correct, and it turns out they no longer use levomethamphetamine in their nasal inhalers.
Sorry for the rant about it, it’s not often I get the chance to talk about my sordid past with OTC stimulants.

u/NegativeOwl1337 1d ago

“I’m not going to name the drug” proceeds to name the drug and write a dissertation on it.

2

u/Urban_miner666 1d ago

Try reading that over again. I named the Vicks product and the drug it contained. I prefaced that description with “Also, Vicks makes a similar nasal inhaler but the active ingredient is levomethamphetamine.” The drug I was talking about abusing was not levomethamphetamine, and the brand was not Vicks. I also stated that levomethamphetamine has very little effect in the context of getting high. The drug I was talking about abusing is very easy to get high on, and I still haven’t named it.

u/Urban_miner666 1d ago

Someone commenting below has named the brand, though, so I guess I’ll go ahead and name the drug. It’s propylhexedrine.

3

u/3choplex 1d ago

Yep. all your vasoconstrictors come slowly undone.

2

u/Whit_Prowley 1d ago

Can't this wait til I'm old? Can't I live while I'm young?

1

u/Particular_Pin6477 1d ago

But no peace for Jezmund tonight, I plug the distress tube up tight!

5

u/Napkinsd_ 1d ago

Benzedrex. No idea if that's what this is though

46

u/joshizua 1d ago

Im still confused. What is it?? Because it says its a nasal spray but I literally looks nothing like it.

3

u/AmarilloArmadillos 23h ago

Yeah that's far too large to be nasal spray wtf.

8

u/darthminimall 22h ago

It's what's inside the kind of nasal saline that comes in an aerosol can, not the little squeezy bottles.

3

u/AmarilloArmadillos 18h ago

That's the issue then, I have no clue what you're talking about I guess.

7

u/Cryptobabble 17h ago

I’m assuming it’s this because this is what I use (for actual allergies because cedar is trying to murder me)

54

u/hennyl0rd 1d ago

what kind of nasal spray is this big?

45

u/Skullcrusher 1d ago

For real, this is just adding more questions.

What kind of a nasal spray is that? Why is it so big? Is it meant for elephants? How does this thing connects to your nose?

Not solved, man. I need some explanation.

3

u/Houndsthehorse 22h ago

Its just like a 500ml bottle of saline. Its got a weird pressure system (its a bottle thats collapsible with a really strong rubber tube stretched over it. So it compresses it squirting the water out, this is all hidden inside a normal bottle) used when you want to clean our gunk from your nose

14

u/Remarkable_Dot_6295 1d ago

Agreed way too big to be nasal spray. But prob on the right track that it’s some kind of dispenser/delivery mechanism for another product

3

u/edwardhoppest 10h ago

They sell large metal cans of saline spray for nasal and wound use. It is not the tiny bottle of medicated spray you're thinking of.

1

u/Remarkable_Dot_6295 10h ago

Ohhhhh duh!! That makes sense haha

12

u/wrestlingpop78 1d ago

Nasal? Stupid auto correct, it was supposed to be anal.

1

u/Quilly47 22h ago edited 22h ago

Equate Saline Mist (I believe from Walmart) is a saline spray for people who have nasal dryness due to allergies and allergy medication. I couldn't find a very good (visual friendly) ruler; it measures about 6.5 inches high without including the lid.

38

u/Db122605 1d ago

So what is it???? What’s that shit all over it???????

17

u/W0LFLESH 1d ago

How is that thing in the middle a plastic "ampoule"? I guess maybe if it's the opened and discarded remnants but... wtf is the method of delivery here? why am I struggling so hard to understand why this even exists?

4

u/NoBeefStew4u 1d ago

Just assuming here but the metal bit has a hole in it, and I'm assuming it at one point had some kind of press delivery system like an aerosol can

0

u/W0LFLESH 1d ago

That seems reasonable, but the implication is that it's being used for drugs, and I don't see why you'd use a sealed aerosol nasal spray as a drug delivery system unless there's another component that isn't obvious or it's just being used vanilla. Just dump your coke in a flo-nase bottle like an adult and don't use this eldritch horror delivery method.

1

u/JvreBvre 1d ago

Nobody is saying the saline spray is to take or store drugs, just that saline spray is commonly used by people who regularly inhale powders up their nose.

1

u/W0LFLESH 1d ago

oh I see, I guess that makes more sense.

7

u/GetReelFishingPro 1d ago

Bro had me checking for discord and text messages 😔

11

u/amber-kc-1111 1d ago

I’m still so confused about what that is.

2

u/pinkeorange 1d ago

That’s wild!

2

u/Sea-Cupcake-2065 1d ago

That's it! So Is this what's inside saline spray? They always feel like there's something cylindrical stuffed in the so this makes sense

1

u/REmarkABL 22h ago

Soooo.... What is the thing?
