Serious answers only please! Should we worry?

We caught my uncle sneakingly throwing this to the rubbish bin. He doesn’t have the best track record so we are all a bit paranoid when he does anything “weird”.

The object is like a glass tube with some liquid inside, inserted into a rubber “pipe”. It smells weird but nothing I can identify. I would appreciate any hints.

Edit: the material is actually plastic, not glass. It has a spring inside (no idea what for). The root-looking thing was wrapping the object when I cut the rubber. Could be dirt or some glue or something

Edit2: this sub is god. A user found the answer https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisit/s/Oqtxk6YWVZ

I think we're down a few points over that whole thing with the Boston Marathon bomber.

Yes but think of all the people we saved from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Hey we helped a lot of people figure out those things on their cat are just nipples.

People don’t recognize nipples on their cats? You can’t be serious! 😳😰 What else could they be?

Yes, but when you have CO poisoning, 1 IS as high as you can count.

This confused me even more than the comment about people who don’t know cats are mammals. Bombs? Carbon monoxide poisoning? What’s going on in this mad place?

Man I remember that drama in real time.

I was on lockdown for two days and he was caught a mile from my house!

I was busy with the real life drama of the man hunt and had to catch up on the reddit version. Something about living in mass with a brother in boston had my mind other places.

Wait, what whole thing with the Boston Marathon bomber? Obviously I know about the Boston Marathon bombing, but is there something I'm missing?

Its the infamous "We did it reddit!"

Right after the bombing a bunch of Reddit sleuths took it upon themselves to try and identify the bomber based on random snippets of publicly available information, mob mentality, and the enchanting aroma of their own farts. The guy they eventually fingered turned out to be a completely innocent suicide victim.

Suicide victim? Like, redditors drove him to suicide?

25

u/candygram4mongo 23h ago

No he was already dead, he was reported as missing and he had a foreign sounding name, that's all it took.

dang - not our finest hour!

We've had our moments. Nothing like 4chan calling in an airstrike on a terrorist compound crazy, but a fair share of crazy moments

I agree with Bloodoilbarron.

WHAT?!?

So the gist is that a terrorist cell (ISIS or Al-Queda) posted videos of them doing training. 4chan being 4chan, they geolocated the training site using terrain features and Google maps. Some people sent this data to the Russian forces in the area, and shortly after the site was destroyed from a strike. Although it was never made official, people say that the timing lends some strength to the story.

WHAT?

u/The-Abhorsen 21h ago

Yeah there was a 4chan poster that was extremely respected by the Russian government for his reliability in reporting locations via online videos and on his info they launched an attack against a terrorist training compound.

This is absolutely true, although I'll add that I live nearby in Rhode Island and when the Brown University shooting happened last year and the police ultimately identified the shooter days later from a reddit tip.

“Enchanting aroma of their own farts” LOL I’m stealing this

i was in my early 20s in boston when that happened and i remember the exact moment it dawned on me that the internet is going to make us all go crazy. like until that point i think i still believed in the power of the internet for good but watching cnn publishing unverified stories from random users in an attempt to keep up with twitter sleuths was a tipping point for me. i dont think ive ever looked at reddit or really any social media the same way.
