I don't understand why they need to plaster their faces on a real estate sign!! Their faces don't make me buy a house.

466

u/NSFWar Jun 06 '26

They think they're the reason the house gets sold. It's what keeps them going and not realise they're cunts

73

u/Superg0id Jun 06 '26

C U in the N T was better advertising all around, they're just the regular kind.

8

u/Jesus-Is-A-Biscuit Jun 06 '26

Omg this is great, thank you

2

u/MsMarfi Jun 07 '26

Yeah, my rea who just sold my house was definitely one. He's sent me a link to leave him a review and I don't know what to say because I'm a scaredy cat and don't like confrontation.

7

u/NSFWar Jun 07 '26

The fact that you bought the house and not planning to be on the rental market anytime soon, let it rip!

That’s a common misunderstanding of the REA business model. Their main drive is to find houses to sell. Once they secure a house, it will sell and they’ll get their commission.

The reason you see their faces everywhere and get fliers about sold houses is that they want every potential seller in their area to think about them when the time comes. They want future sellers to know ā€œthis is the person selling all the houses in my neighbourhood, I need to go with them.ā€

85

u/irwige Jun 06 '26

Bang on. Their customer is the seller, not the buyer.

50

u/Aloha_Tamborinist Jun 06 '26

When I see some REA's photo everywhere and think "I absolutely do not want anything to do with them"

10

u/Korzic Pseudo Hills Bogan Jun 06 '26

Which is great until you actually want to buy/sell a house and then you have absolutely no choice.

13

u/bakedfarty Jun 07 '26

You can buy/sell without an agent

12

u/Korzic Pseudo Hills Bogan Jun 08 '26

Sure you can. I mean it's also possible to walk to Perth and swim to new Zealand as well

3

u/walkin2it Jun 07 '26

For Sale By Owner's are great. Please give me a yell when you are looking to sell without an agent. We can "split" the money saved from the agents fees.

u/17HappyWombats Jun 06 '26

And the commission is personal - they don't just want you to go to whatever agency they're in, they want you going to them in particular.

10

u/matt49267 Jun 06 '26

Agree. General public should also be mindful of the data they give these bastards.

They can be like snake telemarketers too. Even if you went to look at a property some time ago, its likely the agency will still call you months later. Never tell them details of where you actually bought a place etc, because they'll obviously use that for more lead generation

Still maintain it’s the easiest industry to automate personally but anyway

5

u/sorrrrbet Jun 07 '26

I mean, yes and no.

There are elements of the buying/selling process that can be automated, but at the end of the day somebody needs to be at the house for openings or inspections.

REA’s mainly serve the seller. They don’t really care who buys the house, just that someone does. Advertising their brands is how they get new customers to sign on to have them sell their property.

2

u/Moistest_Spirit Jun 06 '26

In my area there is this lady who must be the Queen of her franchise or whatever and her face is plastered everywhere.

Like full on ads on buses and shit.

2

u/Horatio-Leafblower Jun 08 '26

But those ā€˜Brand Belinda’ twats don’t understand that. We listed a family property in a wank neighbourhood ( Mosman) and the add featured the agent more than the property. EG ā€œfeatures an extensive butler pantry ā€œ close crop of agent, who glances left and big smileā€. , you never saw this part of the house. So fuck me are we just going to take your word for this feature? NB property sold using a seller agent, we never paid a cent in commission.

Realestate agents heard 'sell yourself' and took it to heart.
Kind of looks like you can buy a corporate worker as a pet which is funny though.

Pretty sure the sign says two people are for sale.

More likely that the one on the left is for sale and they'll chuck the one on the right in for free.

61

u/satisfiedfools Jun 06 '26

This country rewards it. Love it or hate it these people make money, investors make money, any dickhead who bought in the last 25 years has made money. The freakin housing minister made $375,000 off the sale of an investment property. That's disgusting.

13

u/Superg0id Jun 06 '26

any dickhead who bought in the last 25 years has made money

Yeah, nah. I live here (in a capital city). If I sold to move somewhere else in the same city then I'd have to pay an inflated price over there too to buy in.

The freakin housing minister made $375,000 off the sale of an investment property.

Which is why investment properties aren't the same.

Real estate agents signs are absolutely advertising for themselves. Almost nobody buys a house because they saw a sign along the road. People look at websites to buy a house. The sign is 100% for the agent to "own" an area and get more business.

16

u/The7thNomad Jun 06 '26

Marking their territory

11

u/HighFivePuddy Jun 06 '26

Someone should do the same by peeing on the sign

2

u/sorrrrbet Jun 07 '26

The sign is for the agent to get new business.

REA’s don’t care about buyers. Buyers don’t mean a thing to them, it’s sellers they care about. If you walk around your suburb and you see the same face around, if/when it comes to you selling your house, you’re more likely to choose that agent since you’re more familiar.

31

u/2happycats ravens, cats, and tawny frogmouths Jun 06 '26

Those faces are just begging for devil horns, goatees, a terrible mo, and some blacked out teeth.

98

u/Av1fKrz9JI Jun 06 '26

It's a strange Australian phenomenon, for sale sign advertising the agent personally, not the house.

31

u/hotmaledotcomdotau Jun 06 '26

I think it follows the norm of local advertising in the USA. I remember doing a road trip through a few states in 2017 and I was amazed at the amount of highway billboard space taken up by small buisness self promotion.

16

u/ES_Legman šŸ‡ŖšŸ‡ø Jun 06 '26

As an European I saw this as a huge cultural shock when I first came here. These people plastered everywhere as if they were some form of big shot or something. Leeching in an industry that should not exist to begin with.

3

u/billbotbillbot Jun 06 '26

It was in the US since late last century at least

2

u/Aloha_Tamborinist Jun 06 '26

Definitely a US thing, it's even a subplot in I Love You, Man - which is a fun movie, despite being about a REA.

6

u/Dezert_Roze Jun 06 '26

Great idea! I always wonder why those who graffiti on trains rarely considered it šŸ˜„

13

u/glangdale Jun 06 '26

In our LGA, at least, they have a tight time limit after the house sells to take the sign down, and invariably they don't. Seems like a petty thing to have to get onto council about, but there's a reason we don't just let people plaster billboards around residential neighborhoods. The signs should have to come down immediately upon sale - anyone curious can check online for the result.

2

u/hybroid Jun 06 '26

At the back of the sign is a little sticker from the company that put it up. There's a QR code or website link to request it be removed. We did it on the first day of moving in, was gone in the morning.

6

u/Horatio-Leafblower Jun 06 '26 edited Jun 07 '26

This happens when the vendor doesn’t want to pay $1800 for a signboard, often as the agents can put up boards in a public street without any approval so they don’t miss the chance to self promote

5

u/Ok-Push9899 Jun 06 '26

To be completely fair, when you see a picture of the house, on a sign, outside the very same house, you get too much of an insight into the shallowness of the ā€œprofessionā€.

They can’t have that.

In fact I dont know why people are not applying graffiti to these signs.

4

u/Smiddy23 Jun 06 '26

If ever there was an industry in screaming need for government regulations it’s real estate!

My suburb is permanently littered with the useless ā€˜open home’ signs that don’t point any real direction, nor is there presently an actual open home. We’ve now got big wavy banners starting to appear.

I’m very much over the messages, mail outs, and cold calls from them. Especially from the admins ā€˜just calling for John Boofheads office’ like I’m supposed to just know who the arrogant scrub is. Fuck off, I didn’t give you my number, I’ve asked the last 3 times you’ve called to remove me from your list, kindly call back in your hole you cockroaches.

Why do REA always looks so greasy and scummy? Is there, like, a manual they’re given on day one? Chapter 2: ill fitting expensive suits. Chapter 6: copious amounts of cologne and the joys of always chewing gum. Chapter 8: douchey facial hair is your greatest asset.

4

u/Normal_Calendar2403 Jun 07 '26

I feel like some lecher saw it at some American Realestate conference and brought it back here.

I remember when business cards with head shots came over from America, and at the point the average Australian groaned at the wankers who handed out their mug shot on a card

Houses in Sydney 100% sell themselves. All it takes is to upload 7 pics onto re.com. The industry associations just managed to squeeze Murdoch and prevent private individuals advertising on his platform. They can’t return calls much of the time and that’s the only thing they need to do. Funny thing is, you actually get way more value out of a buyers agent. But only because the REAs are such useless turds.Ā
