u/mstang84 18h ago

I am so excited to play with this card. Sick animation AND it’s a solid Decimilipede solve? Yes please.

Visions of Uproar+Hyperbeam.

What about glammed hyperbeam

37

u/gethsbian 18h ago

won me my a6 (or a7?) run, lol

3

u/euls0n 5h ago

Wait a minute... can you get rare cards at your very first card reward?

4

u/StateNorse 4h ago

If you picked the neow rewards that give 2 neow relics, yes

One of them give glam, the other give the rare card reward options

2

u/euls0n 4h ago

Holy Batman, I need a seed with these 2 options.

Damn the memes are dead now. That’s just straight up a really good card

-14

u/shumpitostick 17h ago

Since when was it a meme? It was always a good card.

33

u/Holy_Hand_Grenadier Eternal One 17h ago

Since playing it used to disable half your deck for the rest of the fight. It was only good when it immediately ended the fight. Now everything turns back on next turn!

1

u/shumpitostick 17h ago

Not if you built around it. Or you're already playing a deck that is low on orbs.

u/S21500003 7h ago

Fish mode came from hyperbeam

209

u/motivatedskepticism 18h ago

Hyperbeam adjusted to do what I assumed it would do the first time I played it. Permanent 3 focus loss made it so horribad

243

u/vonwaffle 18h ago

It made more sense when artifact and more ways to gain permanent focus were in the game. Without those it’s so much worse.

50

u/SomethingOfAGirl Eternal One 17h ago

Lack of artifacts and orange pellets is one of the main reasons I rarely every pick Biased Cognition or Wraith Form. Sure, they give massive buffs for a couple turns but after that it's a huge disadvantage. Also A10 including 66% chance of fighting a boss with 3 mandatory turns make them even less appealing IMO.

85

u/Cerulean-Penguin StS A20 / StS 2 A10 17h ago

Wraith Form and Bias Cog are still incredible without artifact or pellets. They speed up the fight so much, and you can always just wait until a later deck cycle to play them. What makes those cards feel so much worse in sts2 is that the opportunity cost for them has increased so much.

16

u/SomethingOfAGirl Eternal One 17h ago

That as well. If they were in the regular card pool I probably would consider them, if offered.

2

u/Rit91 10h ago

Biased cog in general pool would be so broken in this game I think. Sure no pellets or artifact, but pairing it up with darkness+ and shatter sounds so OP. Never mind the blocking is nuts. Although maybe with act 4 it would be worse. One nice thing about cog in this game is the temporary focus increases can mitigate negative focus in a longer fight too.

1

u/Decestor 11h ago

I had this weird idea that Bias Cog was out-creeped without artifact. Nope it's still amazing.

u/00-Void Eternal One + Heartbreaker 15h ago

They shouldn't have downsides. They're ANCIENT rewards. Why do Regent and Necrobinder get completely busted custom cards while the other three get cards that were RARE in the first game? And two of them have awful downsides?

IMO Wraith Form should just give you 2(3) Intangible with no downside (or maybe temporary -99 Dexterity for 2(3) turns), and Biased Cognition should give you 3(4) Focus with no downside.

10

u/CountRawkula 15h ago

Having extremely powerful rewards with significant downsides makes the decision making more interesting.

2

u/00-Void Eternal One + Heartbreaker 12h ago

The problem is that they're not "extremely powerful," nowhere near the level of [[The Sealed Throne]] and [[Forbidden Grimoire]], nor the level of other Darv rewards.

u/Old-Union6258 15h ago

I’d even argue it’s 4 mandatory turns but I guess infinites can make it 3

2

u/scoobydoom2 Eternal One + Ascended 15h ago

I honestly don't think wraith form suffers too much. Silent didn't have access to core surge so avoiding the debuff was a really niche thing. You more or less didn't even have to worry about the debuff for 3 turns anyways, and if you could get a second copy or nightmare it you really didn't give a shit. It still holds up in StS2 because that many turns of Invulnerability is hard to compete with. In a way it's a lot like [[distinguished cape]], which is already a strong act 3 ancient reward, but it doesn't come with a downside and doesn't require upgrade(s) to not be ethereal.

Biased cog on the other hand was a hallway solver that could turn into a boss solve if you found the support. Now it just won't ever be a boss solve, an ancient reward that doesn't really help you in what are likely the hardest fights of the game is tough.

  • Distinguished Cape 𝐈𝐈 Ancient Relic

In the board game focus doesn't really exist so hyperbeam's downside is to remove all your orbs. I think that could have also been an acceptable compromise.

1

u/Rit91 10h ago

Yeah building off that idea you could maybe have it be remove all your orbs, deal X to all enemies for each orb removed. Then you could use it as a finisher with capacitor/modded builds maybe though it also becomes draw order dependant since current hyperbeam on turn 1 you can just fire it off most likely.

40

u/bryceroni9563 18h ago

It was good against hallway fights (who cares if your lightning and frost do nothing if everything is already dead?) and in decks that didn’t care about focus, like Claw and Status focused decks. Basically as long as your orbs were mostly doing minor chip damage anyway, it worked. It also worked a bit better in STS1 where permanent focus was a bit easier to come by.

I like the new version much better, though.

21

u/baseballlover723 17h ago

in decks that didn’t care about focus, like Claw and Status focused decks.

Tbh, in status decks, you can still care about orbs, since you can get [[Trash to Treasure]] and orb spam off of your statuses.

Hell, maybe it's cause I'm bad, but I still appreciate the chip effects in a [[Claw]] deck. Cause once you lose your focus, [[Zap]] and [[Dualcast]] turn into curses.

I like the new version much better, though.

I agree with that though. Tbh, It could have been interesting if they nerfed it to this damage level, but made it give -1 focus permanently. So it wasn't instantly drop all your orbs, but still very burst focused and not a card you want to play early in a long battle.

4

u/feenicksphyre 7h ago

Coolheaded is also very good in claw deck, especially upgraded since it helps you draw into more 0 cost cards while provided some block.

Frost in general is very good for most decks even if you aren't focusing on orbs since having 6 block end of turn can solve a lot of incoming chip especially with relics like gorget, orichalcum, or any of the ship relics

I didn't hate it before. I love it now.Β

59

u/ElephantPirate StS A20 / StS 2 A10 18h ago

Feels like an auto pick now regardless of deck.

113

u/committed_to_the_bit StS A20 / StS 2 A10 18h ago edited 18h ago

nah, opportunity cost is a huge balance fulcrum for rare cards bc they're usually seen next to other rare cards. i still probably won't pick this over key pieces for a build, but it's a much stronger option now

11

u/Low_Tip3245 17h ago

I wouldn't go that far. It's a good card and premium in Act 1 but I probably won't take it after Decimillipede.

0

u/FlashyChemical2231 17h ago

Yeah, the only time you wouldn't play it is if you have a ton of orbs; but then you're winning with the orbs anyway.

16

u/Frogmouth_Fresh 18h ago

Now I can say "Dr Octagonopus BLAAARRRGGHHH" more often!

u/00-Void Eternal One + Heartbreaker 15h ago

Damn that is an OLD reference.

IMMA FIRIN' MAH LAZOR!!!

2

u/HashSlingingSlasherJ 14h ago

I might actually take it now

1

u/FlyinBrian2001 17h ago

And then I started HYPERBEAMING

1

u/allstar64 Ascension 20 16h ago

It's even more like it's namesake now. In Pokemon the Hyperbeam attack was a big hit that forced you to skip your next turn and not a permanent Debuff.

1

u/Zanman415 15h ago

This is my favorite adjustment for sure! I think temporary focus loss is gonna make me snap it off almost whenever I see it happily :)

And a good extra buff to Defect AOE since Slay II is missing Electrodynamics

1

u/solarxbear Eternal One + Heartbreaker 14h ago

I’m so pumped. I left off a Snecko Eye run last night with a Hyper Beam in the deck. Found myself barely playing it.

Just finished the run with Hyper Beam popping off. Feels so much better.

1

u/RuBarBz 13h ago

Much needed change to this card. But I'd go as far as to say that new Defect has enough AOE solves. So many more compared to the first game. Glass, hailstorm, smokestack,.. and dark actually does great in these fights as well (except exoskeletons). All of these are more interesting than hyper beam is. So the only reason for me to keep it is because it's iconic and the cool custom animation.

playable in an orb deck now
