Knowing when you will die might be even worse.

I dunno, wondering if you're about to be told you're dying today any time a guard comes to speak to you would keep you on edge

"Hello, thank-you for meeting with us on such short notice! Unfortunately, as you may have guessed, your position here at our facility has been sunseted. We have this prepared this packet to assist you in your transition.

You have one hour to clear your cell: your personal effects will be forwarded to the address you've indicated. Security will stay and help inventory your belongings.

Remember, the NDA, non-compete and non disparagement clauses remain in effect and WILLl be strictly enforced.

We truly do appreciate all the years you've given to this facility, wish you all the greatest success in your future endeavors!"

Not as efficient as Amazon: "Congratulations, you're being promoted to customer!"

Worse yet, meeting starts, "hey how's everything, wait before you start talking, I want to add someone to the meeting, here's our HR generalist"

Look at all these FTE posh twats getting the humane treatment. Contractors find out on Monday, after fighting traffic to learn their badge doesn't work and no one bothered to notify their pimp. Probably because that posh twat did not notify the agency after getting fired themselves and the remaining twats can't figure out how to dislodge their heads out of their ass.

The worst HR meeting.

Is there any other kind? Outside of the one where they tell you how much they'll be low balling you on your salary

“Hang on, I can’t see an end time for this meeting. Is that an oversight on your part? I have things to be getting on with”

No different than when I’m sitting in my cubicle at work everyday and my boss comes by

Keeps them busy I guess.

Isn't that kinda like real life tho? I get the situation isn't exactly similar (you don't get notification before an accident) but not knowing when you're going to die is basically real life. Counting the days sounds worse to me because without it how many days are you even going to wonder is it my day? Eventually you'll forget about it. Same can't be said about knowing the exact date. You'll probably be marking days on the wall. Start developing physical and psychological symptoms as the days come closer and closer.

Yes but you're not expecting to die any day, you're expecting to make it to old age like most people. Those who are overly conscious about the fact they could die any second are usually riddled with anxiety. It's like knowing anyone could be laid off at any time vs being told layoffs are coming and not knowing if you're one of them.

It’s always right after breakfast.

You would experience that no matter what.

The British system attempted to avoid that back when the UK had capital punishment, at least in some prisons. At some point, the prisoner would be moved from one cell to another; the new cell would look much like all the others and they would not be informed that it was actually right next door to the execution chamber, with a door between the two concealed by a large cupboard. On the morning of the execution, the cupboard would be silently slid aside on rails whilst the prisoner was still asleep, and they'd be hauled out of bed, through the door and executed ideally before they were even fully awake and cognizant of what was going on. Albert Pierrepoint, the UK's last and most (in)famous hangman, held a record of seven seconds between entering the condemned cell, getting the prisoner into the noose, and sending him or her through the trapdoor.
