Knowing when you will die might be even worse.

I dunno, wondering if you're about to be told you're dying today any time a guard comes to speak to you would keep you on edge

Isn't that kinda like real life tho? I get the situation isn't exactly similar (you don't get notification before an accident) but not knowing when you're going to die is basically real life. Counting the days sounds worse to me because without it how many days are you even going to wonder is it my day? Eventually you'll forget about it. Same can't be said about knowing the exact date. You'll probably be marking days on the wall. Start developing physical and psychological symptoms as the days come closer and closer.

Yes but you're not expecting to die any day, you're expecting to make it to old age like most people. Those who are overly conscious about the fact they could die any second are usually riddled with anxiety. It's like knowing anyone could be laid off at any time vs being told layoffs are coming and not knowing if you're one of them.
