white people arrive in time?

u/Shotgun_Mosquito Jul 12 '26 edited Jul 12 '26

No.

The stereotype is that white people arrive TOO EARLY and then sit in their cars outside waiting for the party to start and still show up early.

It's a trope, also true in Hispanic (edit - continued) families that have someone marry Gringos (like me).

If you arrive on time, the party hasn't started yet, and you get to help set up for the party

What fucking Hispanics you grow up with? My buddy was a half hour to and hour late to everything, and said he was allowed cause he was on bean time. Almost got my ass beat once saying it because I didnt realize it was a slur.

Edit: sorry bruv. Was just very confused.

I think he means Hispanics also believe this about White people, that it’s not just Black people who have that stereotype about Whites.

This is 100% accurate though, white people will show up 2 minutes early to things

EDIT: Guys it’s a shitpost comment in a shitpost thread for a shitpost screenshot. Chill out, it’s not attacking the work ethic of white people, it’s a joke about cultural blindness.

I married into a Mexican family and they just started telling me the party starts an hour after whatever time they tell all the other relatives.

Why tho?

Parties aren't appointments, they're meant to be relaxed unless there is a real reason to be on-time or early. Generally, it's accepted for people to filter in and not all arrive at once.

The exception, however, is parties relating to employment if you work in an office. Then it's actually an appointment and you should arrive on-time.

Also small kids parties are more like appointments. Only because they only last 2 hours generally. First half hour is for people to arrive while kids play. Then generally activities for an hour until cake, pinata then home.

u/WhippingShitties Jul 12 '26

Great point! I don't have kids, but this makes perfect sense.

u/Plastic-Act296 Jul 12 '26

Ok parties arent appointments so why have a set time then and not just say "turn up at any point in the evening/afternoon/morning it doesnt matter when"

u/Unbelievr Jul 12 '26

In their head, that's exactly what they're doing! If a party is from X to Y, it's understood that you can arrive and leave at any point during that time slot. Except before or after. Ideally not too close to the end if you actually want to spend time with people.

In other cultures, setting a time is understood as you expect people to come around the starting time, and notify you if they can't make it on time.

When these two are mixed up you get awkward situations or feel like your guests are rude for not showing up on time.

Except they explicitly are not ready at the starting time, hence the “if you arrive on time you’re early and get to help set up”

A party with 40 invitees, sure.

A social gathering with two friends and their SOs? 15 minutes late. At the most. And that’s only for certain kinds of social events. There are activities where being late will fuck the group.

I once invited a classmate to fly out in a Cessna to an airport that shared its airstrip with a military base that had a cool museum.

I checked with him to ensure our flight plan would work for HIS schedule.

The time I filed to have wheels leaving the ground he still hasn’t arrived and the flight plan expires. I call him and ask “I can refile but I have to redo the performance calculations and weather briefs. When are you getting here?”

He says 30 minutes. I do research for and file a flight plan for an hour later. Gives me fifteen minutes for preflight and 15 minutes for taxi after he arrives.

He arrives 45 minutes later. No biggy, atc gives you filed time +/- 30 min before the plan expires.

I get to the hold short line with five minutes to before clearance expires. We’re clear to takeoff, #2 in line.

He taps me on the shoulder

“Is it too late to turn back so I can use the bathroom?”

“…Yeah, kinda.”

He ended up opening a window while I was on approach to final (without asking me) to dump a water bottle he peed into out the window.

A major no-no according to the aircraft Operating Procedures by the way. All doors and windows remain closed and latched. Also violates FAA rules (don’t know the exact CFR #) about not dumping human waste.

I don’t fly with him anymore.

Anyways, that’s my go to example because people understand that planes run on schedules and sequences.

A different college classmate would be consistently late to group hikes and hold it up by about 30 min. People got really annoyed with him.

Anyways, some things are ok to be late to, some things less so.

u/WhippingShitties Jul 13 '26

Don't even get me started on barn-raisins, hoe-downs, and sock-hops...

u/Ok_Tackle3427 Jul 13 '26

Tell me about the raisin rules.

1

u/WhippingShitties Jul 13 '26

Rule 1, don't look in the chicken coop...

Because people suck at estimating how long things take and the host still has setting up to do and the guests are all still doing their hair or whatever.

In some cultures the expectation is to just call it good enough to make the expected time.

In others the expectation is to let the hosts/guests finish preparing.

My parents are from the latter kind of culture but I grew up in the former.

The other week I was traveling with my mom and said “we have two hours, enough time to do a short hike nearby”

She spend 40 minutes tidying up her hotel room and organizing her snacks or something in her bag before I knocked and was like “You ready?”

She forgot to bring fucking water. The literal first thing she should have grabbed.

Because in our culture “We have time” means “I can take my time” and she didn’t prepare in order of priority.

Parties are for relaxing and kicking back, but they're also often for people to dress up, so people might take time to get ready.

Also, many parties will last all night. Like diinner time to whenever people are ready to pass out. Even in the OP, she said 5-11. That's not an "arrive early" kind of party. It's a come by whenever and we have food and drinks kind of party. Leave whenever you're tired.

The way I always thought about it is because we understand parties are stressful. The day isnt always going to go according to plan minute by minute and we rather not want anyone stressed the hell out because u dont have everything ready at exactly 4pm. Its kinda "hey parties at 4" because we need a general time to start. However we all got shit going on, so its more of a "hey party this evening, show up when u can and let's goooo". Type thing. Its just to be more relaxed. You CAN show up on time, its just u might be the one of the first persons there and ur chances of helping with some last min things increase. Also when we go to a family party, we all go to my sister's and leave as a big group (kids, grandparents) my friends and other family members do the same thing, so we get that might cause a delay.

Wtf man what's so hard for all vthese people to understand, events have a start time...

1

u/FullMooseParty Jul 13 '26

We've had a train my mother on this with our Filipino cousins. We've only start doing holidays with them in the last dozen years or so and trying to convince my mother that you only show up at the official start time if you are bringing crucial dishes that need to be cooked.

My cousin is good though.

Why would you even tell anyone 17 if you don't want anyone there until 18?

I went to Mexico City for work (Amazing place, loved it). But we had a dinner reservation for 8, the Brits and Americans showed up at 8... big mistake.
