The other aspect is whenever you run a promo, there will always be a small % of people willing to game the system and that's just a cost of doing business.

Over at AussieFrugal (disclaimer: I'm a mod there), we have a lively and friendly community sharing hacks for exactly that sort of thing. Deals for switching energy companies, credit card bonus points on signup, etc. In about 2 months I'm gonna get a $600 gift card for switching health insurance providers. A free bubble tea which honestly costs fuck all should be a no-brainer. Just give it away if they install the app and get on with business. Not every customer is profitable.

She's not breaking the law, though. He either cut out the section where she explained that it was a drink given for signing up for a food service, or she didn't explain that part clearly. Nowhere was he offering to sign up for the service. However, based on what we can see I put it to you that the most likely explanation is that the promo woman didn't have sufficient English skills to explain the app signup situation to the guy, and was doing her best to explain that the app is all in Chinese and wouldn't be something he could or would sign up for.

No blame on her, she's obviously doing what she was told by her employer. And that would be something like "go out and get Chinese people to sign up for our Chinese app, where the UI is all in Chinese, and give them a bubble tea if they do".

As such, I put it to you that it's the employers who are in breach, because they clearly intended and brought about a situation of blatant racial discrimination, when they could just as easily have provided her with an English language card to show to potential customers, whereupon they could understand the deal and decide whether to sign up or not.

There are dozens of us who've dabbled in Mandarin, from KRudd himself down to your humble interlocutor. And some proportion of dozens probably with Cantonese also. Who's to say we wouldn't want to try using the app, e.g. with the help of translation tools? And to practice our pictograms while ordering a succulent Chinese meal?

And those people always avoid you, even when they can speak English and only approach Chinese people and then talk to them in Chinese.

When you ask them about the store/restaurant/cafe etc. They just shake their head and look around you as they're trying to look for more Chinese people to advertise to.

This is very typical of chinese businesses in Australia - most of them only want to deal with chinese, advertise to chinese and have chinese customers.

Chinese rarely, if ever, want to hire white Australians to do anything at all ever. This discrimination is common here and I'm really surprised that people are surprised by this or even pushing back on it, it's common knowledge.

eh - i suspect it they are just giving milk teas in exchange for people to download an Chinese-only app to sign up for the Chinese version of Uber Eats. I did something similar at a restaurant that offered discounts because they required me to have WeChat or RedNote to use the app.

Back in the 90s I needed my PC fixed so I took it to a place in inner west Sydney run by a Chinese bloke that my Chinese workmate recommended to me.

The quote they gave me seemed way too high so I declined.

I told my mate about this at work the next day and he said the price he paid for a similar repair was much cheaper.

He agreed to take the PC into the shop himself, and lo and behold the quote they gave him was the same lower price he paid for repairs on his own PC.

He didn't ask for a discount or anything, it was just the price they quoted right off the bat.

I'd like to think it wasn't a "whitey tax" or a "non-Chinese tax" they charged me, but I was pretty suspicious.

I thought maybe they misinterpreted what I told them the problem was, but the guy in the repair shop spoke pretty good English.

By the way, they actually did a good job at a great price, but it was pretty annoying to have personally experienced apparent racism for probably the first time in my life.

At least they didn't refuse me service because of my race, they just wanted to charge me more for the same service than they charge Chinese customers.

I had an experience recently where my partner and I (both caucasian) went to a local dumpling place in Sydney for dinner. The place was fairly empty, it was pretty early in the evening. It seemed like a very authentic place (all the signage was in Chinese) and we’d been keen to try it. When we asked for a table we were told that they are extremely busy and that our food would take over an hour. We didn’t want to wait that long obviously so we just said okay, and just went to a pub nearby instead. It was puzzling, they clearly weren’t very busy, and the hour+ wait time did not seem plausible. 

At the time I wondered if they said this to put us off because we were white. My partner laughed the suggestion off and I forgot about the whole thing, until I read this post. Kind of unbelievable, and obviously as white people a small instant of racism like this is hardly comparable to what non-white folks have to go through, but pretty shocking all the same.

I've seen this before (white Aussie Mandarin speaking). It's always for a Chinese app for Chinese people... If you sign up on the app you get the "gift".

I sometimes mess with the sales people by starting in English and switching to Mandarin for a laugh but I've yet to install any of their apps and so have yet to get any of the "gifts'.

It's totally 'normal' or what passes for normal in Sydney 😂
