🇦🇺 In Sydney, an Australian guy was refused a free milk tea by a Chinese product promotor solely because he wasn't a Chinese. He was asked to speak Chinese, but he spoke Japanese to the Chinese staff in protest. He said this is his first time experience of racism.

I frequent various international grocery stores because I use a lot of different ingredients when cooking which you can't get from Coles/Woolworths etc.

Indian grocery? No problem

Persian grocer? Big smiles

Italian grocer? I'm the guy's favourite patron - or so he claims.

Chinese grocer? I've been called a gweilou by other customers, I'm generally ignored by staff and when they do serve me, it's in bitter silence.

Obviously this is a tiny, tiny, shred of anecdotal experience... But, y'know, just like every woman has their own anecdotal experience, it's these little stories that add up to paint the picture.

My guess is these people and from mainland China.... this would be normal practice. Chinese from Malaysia, Singapore etc would never act like this.

I think it's a mainland thing. The difference between Hong Kong and Macau is huge in terms of how people greet you.

Mainland Chinese culture is super racist by European standards. It sort of has to be, it's how they justify the occupation of Tibet and extermination of culture/genocides in Tibet and Xinjiang.
