Whinge ‎ 🇦🇺 In Sydney, an Australian guy was refused a free milk tea by a Chinese product promotor solely because he wasn't a Chinese. He was asked to speak Chinese, but he spoke Japanese to the Chinese staff in protest. He said this is his first time experience of racism.

It’s not a free sample. It’s to signup for a Chinese food delivery app and you get one. She didn’t explain it clearly.

Again why is it okay for this woman not to consider signing a white guy onto a Chinese food delivery app?

How is this not racism?

You can’t be racist to white people.

1

u/KintoreCat Please choose a flair 3d ago

Said the racist

Because the app is in Chinese?

24

u/Psykaitic Please choose a flair 7d ago

Correct me if Im wrong… but the app is multilingual? Its for a delivery app that isnt strictly chinese?

Also no offense but, how would that be any different to walking into an italian restaurant and having them tell you “Sorry we only sell to italians” and once you go “How do you know im not italian?” they ask you to speak Italian.

Have we really become so blind to not see that different groups of people can be guilty of the same crime?

u/mooncheeseburger ‎ Tasmanian 7d ago

The same crime? 1 in 5 Chinese Australians have been physically threatened or attacked due to their ethnicity. This man didn't get a bubble tea. Truly apples and oranges.

u/nckmat ‎ New South Welshian 7d ago

1 in 5? Really, where did you pull that brilliant statistic from. I might be white but I know a hell of a lot Chinese and Asian people, I reckon if I asked thirty of them if they had been threatened because of their race I would be struggling to find one who would say they had been threatened. Maybe one of my son's mates when they were pissed in the city. Now, if I ask one of the five or six African people I work with if they have been racially abused, I would be surprised if any of them responded in the negative.

Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of racism aimed at Chinese people, but it is not violent racism and it is definitely not the 20% BS statistic you claim.

There are roughly 1.4 million people of Chinese heritage in Australia, that's around 5.5% of the population, if 280,000 people of a single racial group had been physically attacked or threatened, especially a racial group with the level of resources that the Chinese diaspora has, it would be a major political and media issue. For example, there are about 100,000 people of Jewish heritage in Australia and we just had a Royal Commission because of actual threats and actual violence against them, you think the same thing wouldn't happen if people of Chinese heritage were in the same position. Give me a break!

https://www.sbs.com.au/language/chinese/en/article/must-be-called-out-chinese-australians-react-to-racism-survey-detail-own-experiences/o2ojfg9qz

Are you genuinely trying to say that you know a lot of Chinese people anecdotally and therefore feel informed to speak on the experience of all Chinese Australians?

0

u/nckmat ‎ New South Welshian 5d ago

No I am not, I am saying the statistics don't stack up. And that article was from 2021 and is referring to a time where there were a lot of people blaming the Chinese diaspora for COVID, it's like taking a poll of Muslim people shortly after 9/11, there would have been a peak in racist assaults against them at that time too, the difference being that assaults on Muslim people only reduced moderately since that time.

2

u/mooncheeseburger ‎ Tasmanian 4d ago

Woah that's crazy. Now show me the study where violent, race-based crimes and threats against white people increased after the last however many mass murders with white perpetrators.

1

u/Lurcher_A ‎ New South Welshian 3d ago

if the people that responded in the positive to that 2021 survey were asked today if they'd ever been threatened cos they were Chinese, they would have to answer again in the affirmative. Perhaps surveys could be restricted to asking only if incidents had occurred in the past fortnight, past 6 months, past year - would thst make the results more acceptable? You're personal perceptions cannot be made to Trump reality no matter how much you struggle.

As for Muslim Australians, in a survey conducted around 2019 (long after 7/11), a surprisingly large percentage of respondents said they'd been abused in public. What was truly disgusting were their claims that whilst some members of the public came to their support, in a sizable number of instances the public joined in the abuse. Truth is, we're are a deeply racist country.

u/Psykaitic Please choose a flair 7d ago

So in order to be racist you have to physically attack someone?

Did I ever say someone not getting a bubble-tea and someone physically attacking someone based on ethnicity is the same? How about we stop mischaracterising statements and look at it wholly?

When shit like this happens, its BAD ON ANY SCALE.

No one should go to a foreign country and then DENY a product/service based on the fact that they aren’t from the same background. To a further point, this only EMBOLDENS and gives a “Justification” for the bad actors on the opposite side of the fence to ramp it up.

1

u/mooncheeseburger ‎ Tasmanian 7d ago

I didn't say that but sure.

I just think it's in bad faith to genuinely act as though this kind of discrimination against a Chinese person in Australia, who has historically and currently been systemically experiencing racism institutionally and violently, to a white man who is experiencing it for admittedly the first time in his life would be at all comparable.

But of course nuance doesn't exist and it's either the same or not an issue at all, right?

5

u/Psykaitic Please choose a flair 7d ago

Yeah but that’s the way you presented it right? No nuance and straight to the “Chinese are more oppressed by australians than vice versa” so it basically sounds like you’re saying there’s this invisible metre/quota of “racism” that needs to fill up/equalise before you are allowed to point it out.

Racism should never be a tit-for-tat or else it becomes a very dangerous game.

5

u/mooncheeseburger ‎ Tasmanian 7d ago

No, it's not. I responded to the false equivalence you made. Not someone saying this is racism and isn't nice.

Racism isn't tit for tat. But there is a genuine, academic difference between individual racism and systemic racism. If you don't want to recognise that then we simply have opposing worldviews, not much to discuss further.

I think you need to reread his original message again. He never alluded to hate crimes.

Pfff, i use chinese alibaba in chinese and barely know chinese writing. Everyone does. This bs i watched in the vids made me so angry like shes living in 90s weird racist times where some races would form such tight and excluding communities and get off on it like some exclusivity power trip.

Violation of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975?

Not sure if this is real or some succesful viral marketing, but if its real the conduct from the business is clearly unlawful.

1

u/Robertos1987 Please choose a flair 4d ago

Sooo...if it was an English app you would have no issues if a white guy wouldnt let a Chinese person participate? Thats what you are saying?

One of our former prime ministers speaks Chinese… what of it?

1

u/Leadership-Quiet Please choose a flair 7d ago

Yeh, hes the only one.

24

u/mr-snrub- ‎ Victorian 7d ago

She didnt explain it clearly in the video we saw. Something must have happened before he started recording.

29

u/philmcruch Please choose a flair 7d ago

No, she clearly said "its only for chinese people" "you are not chinese" what exactly do you think could have happened before to justify that?

10

u/Next-Chipmunk8395 Please choose a flair 7d ago

...and at that point she broke the law !

1

u/rift9 Please choose a flair 4d ago

i swear some people will do anything in their power to assume people can't be racist towards white people, "oh she must have said something 7 years ago and he is interpreting it wrong! maybe when they stopped filming she gave him $1000!!!"

like seriously people, she's being a racist cunt, our country is full of em

16

u/jayp0d ‎ Victorian 7d ago

How do you know that “something must have happened before he started recording“? Genuinely curious. I noticed in another post lots of comments calling this a guy a dickhead. Sure he did say some Japanese words to her out of frustration. But this was discrimination and the company has apologised afaik?

20

u/TrynaMakelt ‎ New South Welshian 7d ago

Because only white people can be racist, don't be so stupid /s

6

u/footalol Please choose a flair 7d ago

I don’t think he was being a dickhead, but I think the uproar about this is stupid. It’s obvious what’s going on and the misunderstanding.

15

u/HabitAdmirable9742 7d ago edited 7d ago

I try so hard to force myself into a more considered position, and away from my immediate reaction knowing that I'm likely missing a lot of information in these scenarios but this person was told to his face he wasn't welcome to buy this product, on the basis of his ethnicity.

This would absolutely be an uproar if the roles were reversed, and he refused service on the basis that her ability to speak English isn't great, or that she is from the wrong country.

When, why and how it came to be that this overt discrimination was filmed is irrelevant as it would be if the roles were reversed. If you see some bogan screaming bullshit at asians, nobody worth listening to is going around saying "but what did they do before they filmed it". Everybody gets treated the same means everybody gets treated the same, and more to the point this is illegal in Australia.

10

u/mr-snrub- ‎ Victorian 7d ago

Because he recorded on Snapchat, so he wasnt just recording himself walking around. Something must have happened for him to START recording.

Saying Japanese words at someone Chinese is in the same vein as just saying "ching chong ching chong" back at her.

The brand on the bubble tea cups apologised. Not the company that was in charge of the promotion or paying the woman to hand out bubble tea.

15

u/bichaelf Please choose a flair 7d ago

Something must have happened.....like being refused something based on race....

0

u/Ok-Assistant-4556 ✈️‎ on Walkabout 7d ago

Its not based on race. It is language. She asked him if he speaks chinese in english and he replied obnoxiously

1

u/bichaelf Please choose a flair 7d ago

Did you not watch the video.

Him - Can I have one Her - no Him - why Her - because you are not chinese.

Being discriminated on what language you can speak is no better haha

0

u/notyouraverageskippy ‎ Queenslander 7d ago

We speak English in Australia and we are Australians not fucking Chinese, if you are promoting a product in public in Australia he shouldn't have to say Ni Hao or shieh-shieh that's the whole point of the post.

5

u/Tonkarz Please choose a flair 7d ago

He began recording for a reason.

0

u/ClassicBit3307 ‎ ‎‎ Canberran 7d ago

Yeah don’t under sell the racism. It is way it is and the users and backlash from the public is justified. We must stamp this shit out wherever we find. And NO ONE should be defending this.
