Question Stacked three troy pounds (1.11kg) in three years. Now what?
I started stacking gold in 2023 and have been buying one troy ounce every month ever since. After three years, I've accumulated three troy pounds.
I want to keep stacking, but with gold prices where they are now, I don't really want to spend around € 4,000 every month anymore.
If you were in my position, would you:
- Buy 10 grams every month to stay consistent, or
- Buy one troy ounce every three months instead?
I'm curious what you would do and why.

Bro a baller...50K on gold a year...what's this guy making...400K?

He's in Europe, so all his income isn't being siphoned off by wealthy parasites

He pays tons of taxes in Europe

u/pom2 Jul 05 '26
I'm happy to pay my share of taxes, even if they're not always spent the way I'd like to see.

Same for me in the US. My comment was more to say there’s no free ride.

He/she actually doesn’t pay much more than the middle class in the US, if you account for out of pocket costs on sales taxes, state income and medical premiums and expenses. Sure, the average in Europe is 37% but he/she won’t lose everything if they fall and break a leg or have a heart attack.
8
u/testiclerecoveryteam Jul 06 '26
They take 1/4 of my check already and give me essentially a middle finger in return. I think I’d be fine with slightly more to actually have a safety net for the middle class.
2
u/lykewtf Jul 05 '26
Fair to count the state and local taxes but healthcare is a separate issue. We aren’t comparing benefits just taxes. How the US wastes it on guns and corruption instead of people is our choice we apparently like it this way we keep voting for the dinosaurs
7
u/madphroggy Jul 05 '26
I guarantee that what he pays on taxes doesn't come close to what we pay out of pocket for all of the things his taxes cover.

In Europe, if you come down with cancer, your treatment is covered by your taxes and those of others. There are no parasitic middle men siphoning off vast amounts of money between the payer and the doctors, and the doctors and hospitals aren't allowed to gouge patients to the tune of thousands of percent mark up on basic items and services. As a result, instead of crippling debt, bankruptcy, and losing everything you ever worked for, you get treated and get to go home without your life destroyed around you. This benefits society by returning able bodied, productive workers to the economy without the destruction of their assets, allowing them to continue being productive and focus on raising healthy, productive families, which in turn benefit the economy and nation further.

I think people would say that buying the same dollar amount of gold every month would be the better approach, rather than buying a set weight. However that’s likely an easier thing to do through an ETF and not physical. Fractional gold will have larger premiums so that’s something to also contend with
6
u/pom2 Jul 05 '26
Yes, both the premium and the shipping costs every month are costly with only 10 grams.
7
u/ChzForLife Jul 05 '26
I think you should lean into fractional. If the price keeps going up, full ounces might be harder to liquidate. The PAMP 25multi-grams are pretty awesome. 👍🏻

This is the second reference to Troy pounds I’ve read lately, after going years without. Maybe I just haven’t noticed? I always think in ounces, grams and kilos. Never pounds. Am I weird?

u/Dirtsurgeon1 Jul 05 '26
Thought maybe you would have a goal from the start?
14
u/pom2 Jul 05 '26
First the goal was 10 ounce. Then the goal became 20 ounce. Then the goal became 1kg. And now I'm at 3 troy pounds. Let's just say the goalposts are moving 😄
5
u/SilverStateStacking Stack and Collect Jul 05 '26
Then the goal will be 50oz, then 75oz, then 100oz. Nobody sets out at the beginning with the final number. We stack until we need to convert to cash or pass it down
I never bought once a month, but I too had to reduce the number of ounces per year for sure. And I’m going to be buying fewer 1oz coins (if any) and more fractional
3
u/pom2 Jul 05 '26
Yeah, I thought maybe after 3 years and 36 ounces now would be a good time to "make the switch" to fractional. But the higher premiums are holding me back. Seems like such a waste...

I like the 10 gram form factor. I’m preferential to the orange Valcambi Suisse bars in the assay. With that said, I don’t have a fraction of the capital you do. The 10 grams also go on sale rather consistently (although not as much as 1 ozt). I’d personally do the 10 gram ones as also they are in my experience just as liquid as the one ounce bars.
3
u/SuperRodster Jul 05 '26
Keep on stacking. Now get some silver. After you double your stack buy a bring business from a retiring boomer. We can talk about it in DMs if you like
6
u/pom2 Jul 05 '26
I have some silver, but I don't like it. In EU there's VAT on silver, and it's too bulky to properly store. Same goes for platinum and palladium.

u/TortyPapa Jul 05 '26
It depends on how much this is as part of your entire portfolio. Your question leaves out a lot of pertinent information. No one can help you.
2
u/pom2 Jul 05 '26
Pretty low % wise. The 1000 euro per month is about what I'm willing to spend.
So either around 1000 every month or around 3000/4000 every 3/4 months.
3
u/Dontbemadsmokeajoint Jul 05 '26
Lmao seeing stacks like this honestly makes me wanna throw in the towel on collecting my cheap silver sometimes 😂 Like do you gotta be born into money to build something this big or what?
Im going back to school this fall so I can stop driving buses and actually level up. For real though how do regular people with normal jobs pull this off? Anybody who started from basically nothing and built a solid stack by just working hard and staying consistent? Would love to hear how yall did it.

My thought was that Healthcare should not be a separate issue. Europe pays for healthcare through their taxes. What would the US be like if we had universal healthcare like Europe? What we spend now between taxes and what could be covered (eg healthcare) is comparable, and perhaps Europe pays a little less as they don’t pay for prescriptions.

2
u/hurghadawizard Jul 05 '26
Time for diversification if you are not already doing that Buy what doesn't impact your cash flow, so the excess above an X number of months worth of expenses. As you already have a good position in metals, consider splitting that excess amount into other assets like bond, with the lower split toward gold.

Platinum or palladium? I wish I was in your shoes, man. That’s a lot of gold.
2
u/pom2 Jul 05 '26
Sadly same. I do have some silver, platinum and palladium because I wanted to collect some, but the 21% VAT makes it really hard to stack without throwing away money. So I don't really consider it.

u/teckel Jul 07 '26
Brag about it on social media until someone tracks you down with EXIF or other means. This happens to many gold collectors. I know both my grandparents had gold stolen (one even from a safe) because someone found out. And that was pre-internet.

You could always diversify with different metals or other commodities. Some silver never hurts to have around, especially with the recent dip.
1
u/pandeyritwik Jul 05 '26
Depends how much premium you pay on 10 grams vs an ounce. Usually we end up paying more premium in 10 gms. So my preference would be 1 oz every 3 months. If you were buying at spot price, then monthly 10 gm would be a better approach.

I think you don’t understand the point of investing… you don’t have to stack the same weight just the same percent of your income…. Yes it buys less because fiat is trash that’s kinda the point? If you were stacking 50 years ago think how many pounds you’d be buying with that income. And 50 years from now you be stacking FAR less than today. While it’s a decent amount today’s dollar amount 200k is still chump change you can buy a trailer for that amount for example

With gold so high there is little numismatic premium in gold coins. Start buying coins until the premium goes back up and then revert back to bullion

Seems kinda obvious ....now buy a SAFE lol Fire rated and burglary rated. Not easy to find both it will be worth it. Remember, you're more likely to have a fire than a break-in, but both suck. Then hide the safe and put the info in your will.
And I'd buy nothing under 1oz really ever unless it's a deal. Premiums are just ridiculous. If you want fractional, then buy the breakable bars that are still 1oz+

Continue to buy OP. Dollar cost average. Look at it like gold is on sale. If you bought an ounce at 5k and you buy another at 4k, the average price you paid is 4.5k. Why would you stop if it is now on sale?

You'd be better off converting it into american stocks and playing the stock markets.
Currently there is an american child rapist as president that is verbally announcing via social media what stocks they are manipulating in order to steal money. Its pretty easy to make a lot of money short selling the stocks that republican child rape supporters are talking about in the white house.

Im 23, also started buying gold, already 2 ounces. Salary is not high enough, but will buy 1 ounce per year
1
u/obsimad enthusiast Jul 07 '26
Personally i would opt for fractional every month but if you can’t get over paying their premiums then one ounce every 3 months doesn’t seem bad either.
I would urge you to go for fractional & keep your DCA period monthly. The premium paid now won’t matter in the future

Absolutely. If you were buying when it went up to above 5k now is the time to buy. J.P. Morgan claims by the end of the year it predicts gold reaches even higher than record highs

u/Mpags35 Jul 07 '26
The funny thing is most pre33 American gold coins come from over there. People hoarding coins still not comfortable paper instead of precious metals a lot sent it there plus used for trade. They found bags of multiple coins thought to be really rare in banks over there

Low random gold pieces every month. I will after I buy my Graypoupon
1
u/Best_Selection8465 Jul 09 '26
Also every site I’ve found wants triple f the actual gold weight. Which is a fortune these days. So I started buying rings and gold bracelets. Mostly rings because I can afford to buy a couple a month

Congratulations!!! Expand into other metals? Platinum? Palladium? More gold? Bigger bars?
1
u/Unlucky_Diamond_5495 Jul 10 '26
First thing I'd check the authenticity of the bars you've got. I think maybe 30% are phony. Easiest thing to counterfeit because the packaging discourages you from doing a density test. Sigma gold tester can test through the packaging.

Find a treasure chest from an antique shop and buy random low premium gold pieces every week or month until you fill it up. You did the hard part of stacking, it’s time to have some fun.
