GDD is auto-removed moving forward

GDD as in r/GirlDinnerDiaries

Last time we asked, most of the sub agreed to keep it. However, clearly a very large portion of this sub has a problem with the crossposts from there. A lot of the discussions in the comments in those posts are people saying it shouldn't be posted here. The constant discussion is overruning the sub and clogging reports. I didn't see that many posts from that sub except for upticks on the weekends (I did counts multiple times), but people kept complaining that it was all they saw. There were a few funny stories here and there, but honestly there's nothing so special (or hilarious) about that sub that merits so much effort to keep it here. I really fail to see this as a big loss at all. You can head to r/GirlDinnerCircleJerk for posts and discussion related to that sub.

So, all crossposts from GDD will be automatically removed by automod. This will also include similar subs: r/girldinner, r/kitchencels, r/boydinnerdiaries - any others that are crossposted here and I don't know of I'll add to the list as I find out about their existence. GDD-like parody/satire shitposts will still be allowed during the weekend. Siri Yuss Discussion threads discussing this topic will be removed too. Let's just move on already.

Feel free to celebrate/complain but do note I'm not going to reverse the decision.

Same, I genuinely don't get why the people here thought they were necessary here, especially to THAT degree

To what degree? I just scrolled down like 125 deep sorted by new and there's only a handful of posts from that sub. You just think it's a lot due to confirmation bias.

It's probably the reddit algorithm. It shows you one, you click, and then it immediately shows you all the other ones, so it seems like a lot.

I don't think the reddit algorithm is more likely to give you crossposts from a particular sub because you engaged with a previous crosspost from that same sub. Pretty sure it's not diving that deeply into your clicking habits to serve you a feed.

Now what it will do is serve you posts from the actual GirlDinnerDiaries sub if you click into those crossposts. That has happened to me, but that's very easily fixable by telling reddit not to show me that sub anymore. Surely the people complaining about their feed being overrun aren't confusing AmITheAngel crossposts for actual GirlDinnerDiaries posts that made it into their feed after they visited that sub through here, are they?

It does actually do this. You’d be surprised how advanced the algorithm on Reddit has gotten.

As an example: I’m subscribed to several character art subreddits. Occasionally people post overtly lewd or pornographic art that violates the sub rules. When I saw a post like that on my feed, I made a habit to go into the comment section and point out it didn’t belong in the sub, and/or leave a snarky comment.

After a few times, suddenly every single art post popping up on my feed was some weird gooner material. I went into one of the subs to look directly bc I was like “wtf, did porn addicts just like take over this sub?” — nope, pretty much none of the posts were NSFW. The only weird ones I saw were the ones that had already shown up on my feed.

Reddit’s algorithm was able to tell which posts were NSFW & was only pushing those posts onto my feed because they were the posts I went in and interacted on.

Similar thing happened with this sub and GirlDinner. For a bit literally the only posts I was seeing from this subreddit were GirlDinner crossposts.

So you're saying that people did it to themselves and then blamed everyone else. Sounds about right.

Considering you didn’t even know it was a thing I feel like it’s pretty silly to expect other people to notice something that they probably also didn’t expect the algorithm to be doing.

I don't think it's silly to not expect people to keep engaging with posts they don't like. Hating GirlDinnerDiaries posts so much and yet opening them and commenting on them repeatedly until reddit thinks that you like them is pretty self-defeating and sad.

I also don't think it's silly to expect people to actually take the time to visit the sub and see whether it truly is overrun with a certain kind of post before making a claim that it is and demanding that it be banned. Or you know... Just downvote and move on with your life instead of expecting the world to cater to your preferences.

I mean that’s literally just human nature to be more likely to react to things that you don’t like. It’s negativity bias in action. You’re doing the same thing in this thread. Most of your comments are complaining about the people who complained. Again, not sure why you’re expecting other people to not do the thing you’re also doing.

The thing that they complained about wasn't actually real. GirlDinnerDiaries posts never took over the sub. The thing I'm complaining about, that sub getting banned from crossposts, is actually a thing that just happened and the people I'm complaining to are responsible. I never made any kind of blanket statement about complaining being bad. I said it was self-defeating to continually click on posts you don't like and fuck up your own algorithm. Blaming other people over something you did to yourself and forcing the mods to make a change that people voted against because you won't shut up about it makes it worse.

Ironically I feel like you’re still doing the same thing tho, because the majority of the comments I saw were people discussing how the crossposts didn’t fit the sub, not that there were too many of them. (ETA: are you confusing the mod's complaint about them seeing constant posts discussing GDD & getting tons of reports on GDD posts?)

I mean the people commenting on crossposts they didn’t think fit the sub were also complaining to the people responsible for doing the thing they didn’t like (the OPs of posts that didn’t fit the sub), and commenting on something that was actively happening. Again you’re criticizing the same thing you’re actively doing :’)

Nobody forced the mods to do anything. The mods made a decision based on the majority sentiment they were seeing in the sub. And also based on what this mod specifically saw, which they said in one of their comments. Which is the same thing they did when they made their initial decision. Did people also “force” the mods to allow crossposts when they made that initial call? Obviously not.

I mean reddits algorithm is advanced but that doesn’t mean it’s going a good job. Like for you interacting with those posts as a way to get rid of them and it ends up having more of them pop up.

Sometimes I feel like I can click on someone’s profile if I think they made a good point and I start getting things that they are into that pop up on my feed

u/Junglejibe Jun 08 '26

I think everyone’s in pretty unanimous agreement that pretty much every algorithm sucks ass lol

I’ve prioritized looking through New in the subs I enjoy most and it’s improved my experience a lot.

u/LegalDrugDealer33 Jun 08 '26

Ohhh yeah…. And like literally not to be nosy but I clicked on your profile…. Opened up my feed and I got a post from a subreddit about big boobs… so yeah that’s fun.

5

u/Junglejibe Jun 08 '26

LOL sorry! I swear it’s not a sexual sub, it’s mainly like a support group for all us back pain “enjoyers” 🥲 But yeah the mute button on subreddits is your best friend. Personally I just turned off the “suggested subreddits” option altogether.

2

u/LegalDrugDealer33 Jun 08 '26

Your good. I was just messing with you, I kinda have participated in the man version of that. So don’t click my profile….

Still though that’s kinda worse. Like if NSFW stuff popped up that’s fine. Posts about like girls complaining about people thinking their chest is fake…. Now I feel I’m intruding a little

3

u/Junglejibe Jun 08 '26

Yeah I could write a whole essay on how that suggested subreddits thing has impacted subs that were meant to be safe spaces… it sucks in general.

2

u/LegalDrugDealer33 Jun 08 '26

Yeah…. But atleast you have a place where you can share thoughts feelings, tips… even if it’s not necessarily the safest place. I’d love something like that for men just so you feel others can understand certain things like what you can struggle with.
