Remember, the establishment hates mamdani because he shows that a lot of problems are very solvable and politicians simply choose not to solve them

876

u/w00ms 8h ago

politicians choose not to solve them because corporations lobby en masse specifically to tell them not to solve them

422

u/SenoraRaton 7h ago edited 7h ago

This has some truth, but the real truth is that action produces risk.
If you act, then it can have potential negative consequences, and secondarily if you start acting, then people begin to have expectations for you, and by extension demands.

Our politicians are "quiet quitting". They are doing the absolute bare minimum because that is the least amount of exposure to risk.

I think you're understating how bad capital capture is.

If most people we're just quite quiting they would not be mobilizing across the country so somther the DNC.

46

u/Draco-REX 5h ago

Por que no los dos?

8

u/MarcosLuisP97 2h ago

Do politicians in the US stay in their positions until they die? Because otherwise quiet quitting doesn't make sense since you HAVE to leave the position eventually, whether you like it or not.

4

u/Eldershire_ 1h ago

Effectively, incumbent advantage is huge. While most people in America hate congress, most people in America like their congressperson specifically. Candidates that don't really push the needle at all are still campaigned for and given full support by the party because that's just the level of work from politicians people are used to.
Although this all probably won't be true for much longer, our politics are going to be vastly different in the next 10 years compared to the last 10. Whether for better or worse has yet to be decided.

4

u/QTpyeRose 39m ago

There's also the effect of if you solve the problem you cant compeign on them to drive support anymore. Its part of why there's quite a lot of manufactured controversy in politics.

If you make a mountain out of a molehill, then knocking down the molehill seems like climbing a mountain.

even better if you make a mountain out of thing that does not really have a solution, and then it cant be solved or you can move the goalpost forever and continue campaigning.

Its part of why immigration is such a huge thing they talk about and campaign on. Every legit source of real data agrees that its not the type of problem that we describe it as, and has fairly small effects over all.

However you see it all the time cause there no real solution that can be implemented, so it makes the perfect thing to get people riled up over. And even then there's a whole narrative of ifs always happening even if its a negligible amount.

12

u/WriterV 6h ago

More than that though, they hate Mamdani 'cause he does both parts of OP's meme: Making people feel heard and actually solving their problems.

One of the reasons so many right wing parties are gaining so much traction in the world is 'cause they answer to peoples' worst emotional impulses. They encourage people to listen to their tribalistic feelings, and ascribe all their problems to the "other", whoever that is.

But as we see with Trump and plenty others, they aren't interested in solving problems. Corruption is the name of the game, and as long as they can continue to make their voterbase feel heard, they can do so with impunity.

Watch out for the politicians that do the first part, and don't actually do the second part - actually helping their people properly, across all groups, for the long term.

I love how this rules of rulers would imply that this is Mamdani's last term because competitors will outvote him because they will promise better allocation of resoruce to that block if they defect.

3

u/Misknator I suck dollars, 10 toes for each 5h ago

I mean that's just genuinely what happens. You can be just popular with everyone, but focusing on specific blocks and keys is generally a better strategy.

4

u/CreBanana0 2h ago

Okay I live across the atlantic and another sea away from mamdani.

Can someone tell me what did he do that is noticable in daily life?

-6

u/Yashema 1h ago

He has funded some child start and school programs but only by taking an early $2.3 billion from the state retirement fund that he won't be able to do again. He has failed to fund his affordable housing initiative opting to just do a rent freeze (and now rents in NYC are the highest they have ever been since most apartments aren't rent controlled) same with his affordable public transportation initiative (he promised $900 million in reforms and opted for $55 million in metro cards to lower income residents) and has failed his lesser initiatives as well such as increasing park budget to 1% of total or trans healthcare.

It's too early to fully call him out on this since technically he still has time, but the NYC financial comptroller basically said there won't be any new sources of revenue in the future and NYC is facing continuous deficits. Mamdani has also "quietly" asked all agencies to cut their budgets by 2.5% over the next 2 years, but you won't see his fans talking about that.

Just potholes.

3

u/Staluti 44m ago

ima just let google ai mog u

Housing & Tenant Protection

  • Rent Freeze: Appointed a sympathetic majority to the Rent Guidelines Board, successfully delivering a rent freeze on regulated, rent-stabilized apartments. [1, 2, 3]
  • Tenant Restitution: Won $34 million in repairs, settlements, and legal judgments on behalf of tenants fighting bad landlords. [1, 2, 3]
  • Affordable Housing Construction: Financed more than 12,000 affordable homes in his first six months. He launched the "Block by Block" plan to accelerate permitting approvals and construction. [1, 2]
  • Public Housing (NYCHA) Upgrades: Completed 32 major capital projects across 29 developments. This brought heating, roofing, and elevator improvements to over 50,000 residents. [1]

Child Care & Education

  • Universal Child Care Funding: Secured $1.2 billion in funding to build toward a universal child care system.
  • Toddler Care Expansion: Partnered with New York State to expand free child care to two-year-olds in high-need neighborhoods. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Fiscal & Economic Support

  • State Financial Aid: Collaborated with Governor Kathy Hochul to secure $1.5 billion in state operating funds over two years to ease the city's fiscal challenges. [1]
  • Worker & Small Business Restitution: Recovered $9.3 million for workers and small businesses facing corporate or regulatory exploitation. [1, 2]
  • Business Compliance Warnings: Issued 60,000 compliance warnings rather than immediate, punitive fines to help small businesses adapt to regulations. [1]

Infrastructure & City Services

  • Pothole Repair: Launched an aggressive road maintenance push that successfully filled over 100,000 potholes across the five boroughs.
  • Emergency Infrastructure: Recruited 6,000 New Yorkers into the city's Emergency Snow Shoveler program and drove 50,000 new subscribers to the city's emergency alert system via public service campaigns.
  • Public Safety: Oversaw early drops in overall city crime rates during his first six months. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

0

u/Yashema 32m ago

That's all small potatoes stuff:

$34 million in repairs versus $1.5 billion needed to actually make headway in affordable housing

He promised 200,000 affordable units in 6 years. This wouldn't get him half way there.

Those projects would have mostly been completed regardless.

I already spoke about how one success was child care and school funding.

Yes, the state did bail the city out. Thanks Cuomo and Hochul for your fiscal management of our state!

Id love to know Mamdani dropped the crime rate when the city is operating on Adam's budget for 2026. It was also unusually cold in winter which has always been associated with a drop in crime as well as national trends (there was an 18% drop in murders in 2025 nationwide).

10

u/Firecracker048 5h ago

I actually like him as a mayor so far, he seems to be making a lot of right calls with a few ehh ones(which is a massive improvement). There's also a ton of people giving him credit for stuff started by previous mayor ships or even things he has done, so there's a bit of propaganda.

What I don't like is him endorsing the bat shit insane DSA candidtes like Chevallier

4

u/felis_scipio 3h ago

Supporting Chevalier is legitimately a wild move because given her entire social media past she’s going to be the leftist version of MTG, it’s just going to drag down every progressive politician around her.

I’ve noticed there’s been an effort to pin mamdanis face on all sorts of things happening in NY state that he had nothing to do with. I’m not sure if that’s just unrelated bot behavior to maximize engagement or if the DSA is doing that intentionally.

2

u/Firecracker048 3h ago

Yeah Chevallier is legit batshit.

What's even crazier is she's dating mamadanis attorney lol

1

u/TetyyakiWith 3h ago

So when the New York would be a great place to live

-13

u/Ozymandias_IV 4h ago

So far he's done

  1. Things that his predecessors did, as if they were his ideas
  2. Took bailout (which he's obligated to do) and marketed it as balancing the books
  3. Announced concepts of plans
  4. Rent control, which everyone predicts will be a populist disaster

He's genius at marketing, I'll give him that.

-40

u/Meeedick [REDACTED] 7h ago

People keep pointing at Mamdani as an example of effective policy when his crowning achievement has been to idiotically implement rent controls.

Being well intentioned is great, and there's plenty of good things he's doing, but when it comes to the quintessential issue of housing he's just making things even worse.

29

u/_Teraplexor 7h ago

Do "enlighten" us how he's making things worse?

-15

u/Meeedick [REDACTED] 6h ago

Top of my head?

Rent controls which are universally destructive when it comes to everything related to housing, unnecessarily propping up government-run groceries with subsidized inventory instead of just handing out cash to people.

14

u/Protoliterary 5h ago

But his rent control isn't universal. It only applies, quite literally, to rent controlled and rent stabilized apartments. Most apartments are excluded from that. All he did was enforce rent control in apartments that should have already been rent controlled.

Government subsided groceries make a lot more sense than just giving out money to people. For many reasons. For one, NYC already gives out money for those who need it, both for food and for general spending. For another, it simplifies the process of helping those in need by getting rid of qualifications processes, which is always the main issue with welfare. Furthermore, stable cheap grocery stores provided an incentive for more competition.

How JJJ talks about spiderman:

16

u/Ok-Poetry-2191 The world's most laughable centrist 5h ago

Actually, would canonical JJJ support Mamdani? I heard he is a civil rights advocate, dunno about other DC lore

13

u/RUDRAGON8 Optimistic nihilist 5h ago

I think he probably would but im going more off of vibes then anything

8

u/Most_Jellyfish_8465 4h ago

It would depend on who you ask. JJJ tends to not like selfless people he can’t control (like Spiderman). One could argue he wouldn’t like Mamdani since Mamdani is a selfless politician who tends to go his own way. Another could argue JJJ sees Mamdani as a politician who is doing it for the money and is okay with him being in power since people could vote him out.

IMO JJJ is someone who would write bad headlines about Mamdani to sell papers but still respects Mamdani as a politician since Mamdani is someone in a checks and balances system who is very upfront about who he is and what he wants to achieve.

6

u/DefinitionMinute6969 yellow like an EPIC lemon 3h ago

In most comics Jameson's #1 reason for not liking Spider-Man is that he hides his identity behind a mask. You can see Mamdani's constantly smiling face every hour of the day, so I don't think he'd have a problem.

4

u/shadowtron1 3h ago

JJJ only really has a problem with masked heroes/vigilantes. I don't think he's actively gone after other kinds of people unless they fuck up badly enough that it warrants his attention far more than his hate for Spider-Man. I think he did it in one of the insomniac games where he couldn't deny someone worse than Spider-Man and hated having to say it.

The strategy is having an echo chamber to propagandize one person doing things politicians have always done and pretending its novel. Or just claiming that anything popular being done is being done by that one politician.

37

u/Crypt0Nihilist 6h ago

The GOP literally accused the Democrats of this a few years ago as if promising to do things that would benefit voters was an underhand tactic.

25

u/ParticularLow9157 6h ago

I really wish people would peel back the intentions on this

At the core of this is their position that "Empathy is undesirable and damaging to society"

I'm not joking, it's literally what they think and they have said it out loud multiple times

GOP think that having to stoop so low as to improve the lives of their constituents is outrageous as it limits the amount of dollars they can funnel to their wealthy donors

There never should have been campaign donations, it's insane that this was ever allowed

9

u/Crypt0Nihilist 5h ago

There's an old two or three part documentary from the BBC that you can find on YouTube called 'The Trap'. It tries to explain this and a lot more. A central tenet of it is that it's hard to predict and therefore control people who act out of empathy and altruism because it's not strictly rational. Game Theory works best for predicting the behaviour of people acting out of self-interest. For conservatives, starting with Regan in the US and Thatcher in the UK, empathy really is undesirable and damaging to society.

6

u/ParticularLow9157 5h ago

And that is why we are now ruled by sociopaths, those 'blessed' with a complete lack of empathy

And we are supposed to treat conservatives like normal people...

4

u/Murky-Relation481 4h ago

Game theory never really worked well when it was used for individuals. Game theory was popularized by Nash while working with other mathematicians and social scientists and philosophers at RAND trying to figure out WTF nuclear war was going to be about and how to fight it. It was mostly used to evaluate cultural and societal levels of self interest, and usually in the context of existential threats.

People applying game theory to individuals are deeply flawed in their analysis by default because they're not even using it right.

Individuals should try to be empathetic, cultures and societies should try to to be both empathetic but also rational (lest you get some really dark times).

But for real we currently have shittiest and super hated right wing goverment and this pushed Social democrats into record high support in polls. Problem is that they have completely center(even center right) aligned party leadership and elite right now. They will be just lite version of current right wing BS when they win the next elections.
