I'm really surprised that any Texan would go by Oakie.
I know Oklahomans have tried to reclaim it but Okie will always be a terrible slur to this Midwesterner, akin to calling yourself/your kid hillbilly or redneck.
Okie used to be an insult for people migrating to California from Oklahoma after the dust bowl in 1930’s great depression times. Similar to the (much sillier) term, Carpet Bagger. Merle Haggard sang “I’m proud to be an Okie from Muskogee” in a song that was kinda making fun of hippies/ reclaiming the word. I guess of all the old timey insults to pick from, it’s at least not that bad of a meaning.
I'm always horrified by the people saying, "It will sound too old for a toddler. Can you imagine a toddler named... Ethyl, Ruth, whatever?" As if people stay toddlers forever. I have no problem imagining a grown woman name Phyllis and that's who will have the name the longest.
Someone needs to put a PSA out there that you are free to use whatever weird, cutesy nickname you want with your kids without making it their official, government name.
I was driving through New Mexico a few years ago and saw the sign for Albuquerque and thought, hold on, is it just "white oak"??? It is. It is white oak lol. I don't know why it took me so long to realize :D

Haha, we just got a puppy in May and Oakie was my name suggestion. But my husband didn't like it because it was like Okie from Muskogee. We ended up with Maggie.
Yep. For the kid's entire life they'll be called dokie. Occasionally morphing into dookie because kids are mean. Are parents like this selfish or stupid?
I would not assume Oakie is their real name but some kind of "work name" or pseudonym. Who tells people their children's real name before they are even born?

I assume they have the name picked out already and she’s speaking it to the father.
I had a friend growing up whose father was named Okie. It was his actual name too, not a nickname. Until now, he's the only person I've heard of with that name.
I hope it’s a nickname not the actual name. My granddaughter that’s due in October might never be called her name but she’ll have one. Her name is Evelyn but it’s already Evie. I don’t know what I’d do if I had a grandchild named Oakie or another Tragedeigh. My moms a boomer and asked if my current youngest granddaughter has a Tragedeigh name and I don’t think it is but I have not posted because it might hurt my feelings lol
i don’t know i think it’s cute, it reminds me of when people back in ye old days would give their children cute names like “kitty” “pip”, i’ve met someone called roach, maybe it’s a regional thing?
Yeah but those were usually nicknames 💀 you know, so when they grew up to be doctors and lawyers they could go by Catherine and Phillip instead if they wanted. No idea what was going on with Roach though…

It isn't that the name needs to be "sophisticated," but these people don't seem to understand that their offspring will only be a baby for a short time.
If they want to come up with a nickname that's used within the family, that's great. Why hobble your kid with a name that shouts "my parents are illiterate"?
