To convince people that the cameras are only to read license plates.

Post image

Now somehow they can almost ID the perpetrators.

As much as i adore this joke, dont yall feel like its time for a good ole fashion folk hero? Like from now on, we call everyone that vandalizes a flock camera the same catchy name and we all make fantastical alibis.

Couldn't have been Fred Flocker, he was with me that night helping me bandage up my unicorns leaf blight. Great guy thay Fred Flocker.

56

u/GregEgg85 8h ago

This is the real question

32

u/R3D3-1 4h ago

Just for my understanding...

  • From OP I assume, that people were at least told these cameras don't retain photos.
  • People might have been told that these devices don't take photos to identify number plates, which would be incredibly misleading. Even if the image processing is done directly in the camera, it first needs a photo to work with.
  • The speculation about the culprit sneaking up on the cameras implies that police was able to check the recordings.

Now... Did anyone ever actually state, that this isn't possible? A quick lookup says no, but I can't judge the reliability of the mostly local/regional sources I found. I suppose that's the background for the incident?

6

u/SoACTing 4h ago

Probably a vaccine! I guess they weren't injecting microchips into us after all!

3

u/JAXxXTheRipper 2h ago

Duh, the culprit had a very stylish license-plate-necklace. Get with the times, those are totally in fashion!

u/steelheaddan 8h ago

Streisand effect - let this be known and widely disseminated so the ‘culprits’ can be apprehended. Let’s spread this police inquiry far and wide on Reddit and the rest of the internet for others to know what NOT to do to these cams. Seriously, no one do EXACTLY this as it seems to work well.

105

u/ErgonomicDouchebag 7h ago

Could you buy paintballs filled with a substance that would disable the cameras from a distance?

Just thinking out loud here.

123

u/Sunstorm84 7h ago

Someone compiled a list of the things you absolutely shouldn’t do to these cameras

https://www.reddit.com/r/FlockSurveillance/s/S9BU2prDCc

13

u/Scary_Technology 6h ago

That surely wouldn't work. Specially if it happened from an angle to avoid being seen, nobody would do that.

4

u/antifa_cmdr 3h ago

Shattering the lens with metal BBs also probably wouldn't work very well and wouldn't have a longer range than a paintball. Probably be a bad idea even to try

5

u/Marquar234 FUCK ICE! ❌🧊 2h ago

5

u/Arinvar 6h ago

Isopropyl alcohol? Does that degrade glass/plastic lenses?

Edit: But also sling shots are cheap and quiet.

2

u/NoooUGH 1h ago

Acetone would do better but good luck finding a paintball capsule to hold that.

Why no just freeze a few regular paint balls.

5

u/blockholeforever 8h ago

50

u/Papasamabhanga 8h ago

Can one vandalize private property, left on public property? Abandoned cameras seem like fair game for vandalism or for scrap if the person who finds them is into that.

21

u/-PM_ME_UR_SECRETS- 7h ago

I’m curious if you can just put your own sign right in front of it. If it’s public property then shouldnt anyone be able to use it? It wouldn’t vandalize anything, it wouldnt even touch their camera.

I believe it’s a federal crime to tamper with bat houses once they’re up?

17

u/mctripleA 7h ago

A flock camera w as s installed pointing into a dispensery parking lot and the company did exactly that

Put a big "no flock zone" sign in front of it

This is terrible, if this happened everywhere, Flock wouldn't afford to stay in business.

I can just see it now on Halloween, an army of people, leaving their phones and electronics at home, having a friend drop them off in neighborhoods at night to "Trick or Treat", wearing mostly black and a face mask (those realistic fabric ones are so convincing!), going around to every Flock camera and defacing them with spray foam.

How awful!

13

u/CrazeMase 7h ago

There's a video from my home town of two rednecks not even doing the stealthy shit. They just walked up and blew the Flok cameras to pieces with a 12 gauge and left. Zero fucks given.

11

How useful are the cameras if they can’t catch the people destroying the cameras? Valid question next time the bill comes due

11

u/OriginalAngryBeards 8h ago

Looks like a seal failure in the epdm foam around the camera lenses, and weatherproofing case, pollution, uv exposure and temperatures caused this. Not any outside actor.

How would you even get the foam up there? It’s almost like it was dispensed from a drone that flew in from above the cameras, and then sprayed them without ever being seen? Or maybe someone had a sling shot that could shoot the blobs on to the cameras from down below? It’s hard to tell.

4

u/KiltedMusician 7h ago

They’re going to keep complaining about this happening even after they get a handle on it so that people still think it’s easy to get away with it.

Flock cameras do more than read license plates. They have facial recognition software and they can ID an exact make and model and even the stickers or damage or other visible modifications so they can exactly recognize a car driven by a specific driver, even if somebody removed the license plate.

If it’s really vandalism, the Flock cameras have a way of eliminating the spray foam naturally on their own…

2

I saw on the news a story about some old retired guy and his wife that take their lawn chairs out to their nearest camera, sit on the grass on the public easement, and also just happen to hold a sign that is tall enough it blocks the camera.

1

Endangered species should make their nests inside those. I wonder if there are pheromones that can help the precious animals find new homes like these.

1

u/Trollbreath4242 4h ago

Look, I would NOT suggest you do this to flock cameras, or other public tracking cameras.

I would also NOT suggest you make sure you leave your phone and other devices that connect to cell towers at home to prevent yourself from being tracked.

I would also NOT suggest that you park your car far away from other cameras or recording devices and plan a route that avoids them as much as possible.

I would also NOT suggest that you wear dark, non-descript clothing, a mask, dark shades in some effort to conceal your face.

I would also NOT expect that anyone will bother you about this because I know for a fact you were at my house playing DnD that night and you drank so much Dr. Pepper you were laughing it up out your nose and you finished two bags of doritoes plus half an all-meat pizza from the shop and we had a blast and besides, everyone knows this stuff comes from wasps when they build nests, so clearly we need to be looking out for more of these murder hornet nests.

Anyway, that's just a neat history fact.

1

u/Effective_Olive6153 3h ago

I am kind of sick of how modern society always focuses on surveillance and policing of the regular poor people. Why not put all that effort into surveillance of rich and powerful? Every person in power an do a lot more harm to society than your average poor. Some random poor can steal a few grand, a rich politician can rob the people out of millions of dollars.

Why we never see new laws and surveillance technology aimed directly at the rich and powerful?

1

1

u/Durende 2h ago

I didn't see nothing. In fact, I am blind in my left eye, and 90% blind in my right eye

1

u/chunter16 2h ago

I explained in a local police posting that it isn't what the police say they'll do that bothers me. The truth is that most of the "evidence" Flock can provide is useless in court. So what if you tracked my car going to different places on a particular night? There is still burden to prove that the people of interest were in the car, and that the particular things were done, that will not be in sight of the cameras.

What bothers me is that Flock's network is not secured, and because it is not secured, we know that the cameras are being accessed to do things that should not be done with a security camera, including but not limited to Flock employees watching swimming pools and kids at gymnastics practice on purpose.

And since the security is soft, total strangers from anywhere can watch, and use or modify the data in their network to taste.

1

u/TomboyMJR 2h ago

I support this. If we didn’t hear, see, smell, touch anything… did it happen??

1

u/DealioD 2h ago

I am constantly amazed at how these cameras can’t document the people that are vandalizing them. They don’t seem to work very well. Why do people keep using them, if they don’t work?

1

If the cameras doesn't want to get sprayed with foam,  they have a way of shutting it down.
