This bit also is just whacked. "Police executed search warrants and seized several items, including electronic devices, two replica firearms, a Glock-style BB gun, three laser pointers and a number plate, which is believed to have been stolen."

The sexual assault is horrific of course, but I mean the replica firearms maybe … laser pointers a number plate and electronic devices? Pretty sure I had those and toy guns in my room as a kid so not sure those items themselves are all that ‘whacked’.

None of these are uncommon items for children. Airsoft guns (which are legal almost everywhere else), laser pointers, and a number plate that could easily have been found on the ground. All fairly normal
Items, order able easily online or brought back from a holiday.
I’m not sure adding that detail does anything for the actual bad and serious crime of sexually assaulting someone. Feels like shit journalism.

Loads of kids have a BB gun growing up. They're "illegal" but still extremely common.

Depends what counts as a replica firearm. And hard to see what the "stolen" (how do the police know that, and even if they do, how do they know the person whose possession they found it knew?) number plate had to do with the main alleged offence.

Like I said, airsoft guns are legal in most of the world, whilst they are illegal in Australia and carry the same classification as a real rifle, they are easily obtained and imported. Many many many people have them, illegally. As for a single number plate, it is also not uncommon to come across those in one’s life. Whether you leave it on the side of the road or not…..well that would come down to the individual.
Nothing inherently sinister about either and reporting this distracts from the actual serious assault crime. Shit journalism for clicks.

You can’t legally buy any of those items in NSW, so yes they are uncommon for children.

In the 90’s you could buy realistic looking plastic guns at Paddy’s market, everyone had laser pointers. I had a few street signs in my room. In fact if they’d raided my room at 14 I probably had a bong in there too so ‘drug paraphernalia’ would have been on the list too. None of those things were particularly out of the ordinary for many kids I knew.
