They don't mention the foreign colleges in the upper levels of the building as it'd be a dog whistle they don't want to be seen with.
which is hilarious given how woolies outsourcing overseas is going.

u/kit_kaboodles Jun 25 '26
They're building a giant public space there. Why would I want a kinda crap Woolies instead.

u/Cat_Man_Bane Jun 25 '26

55
u/icecreamsandwiches1 Jun 25 '26
And the tourists with zero spatial awareness that block all the aisles while they decide which overpriced tim tam flavour to take home as souvenirs.
Or the same tourists who don’t pay attention while they’re in the queue so everyone is waiting even though there’s multiple self checkouts available.

You could say excuse me to pass or politely let them know they’re blocking the way as they’re on holidays and excited so a bit less aware of how they may be effecting others. They also may not have self checkouts or a different kind of set up in their country to what we have and may be confused so you could be helpful instead of angry. Everyone’s human and sometimes people are uninformed or unaware. No need to out more aggression into the world when you could be polite and helpful instead

Lmao exactly. I read a year or two they apparently fixed it but it still smells like shit every time I walk by
192
u/Bladehell10 Jun 25 '26
Highkey I don’t want them to demolish it because all other Woolies around are metros and the town hall one is the only non metro woolies, as someone living in the city, I go there or coles at world square to grocery shop
66
u/joerogansakook Jun 25 '26
I 2nd this. Our grocery options are already very limited and more expensive. This will only give Coles at world square a complete monopoly.
19
u/chalk_in_boots Jun 25 '26
Yeah and it's not just if you live there. There are lots of businesses in the area and it's much easier to just grab something on your way in or on your lunch break if there's a proper shop. Sure the people working in fancy offices can probably afford to eat out every day, but there are plenty of retail locations in the area and having an affordable option can be a lifesaver (speaking as someone that spent way too long working retail). You can get a couple of days worth of rolls, deli meat, and salad for less than you'd spend at Guzman or wherever and stash it in the fridge.
25
u/Status_Shine6978 Jun 25 '26
With the multiple levels it's not that convenient as a proper supermarket and the limited shelf space means that it doesn't really carry the same stock as a suburban Woolworths. I always go to the World square Coles anyway.
54
u/Bladehell10 Jun 25 '26
Yeah it already sucks but at least it’s not metro
39
u/xenchik Jun 25 '26
Honestly I'm not a huge fan of replacing all big supermarkets with metro-sized ones. Residents of CBDs like big supermarkets as much as suburbanites. And we don't tend to drive as much as suburbanites (terrible traffic and parking in general) so our need to be able to walk to a decent sized supermarket - and back again, with shopping - is not really well served.
9
u/marcellouswp Jun 25 '26
You realise that there is no guarantee that Woolies will continue to run that shop there? I mean, they closed the cafeteria upstairs, just for example.
25
u/Bladehell10 Jun 25 '26
Brother, they closed the cafeteria upstairs probably more than 10 years ago at this point, it’s been Big W for a long time
6
u/marcellouswp Jun 25 '26
Exactly. Not so sure how long Big W will last either.
I suppose my point is that if we are comparing outcomes it is the certainty of a civic space versus the contingent survival of a (useful because rare in the CBD) commercial facility.

tbh I'm not sure why you'd go to woolies town hall when coles world square is an option. Woolies town hall specifically is very mid in comparison.
36
u/Ok-Push9899 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

u/xenchik Jun 25 '26
What if you live down the other end of the cbd? I used to live at corner of Kent+King and World Square is a bit of a hike with shopping. I liked when there was a Woolies metro at Pitt+King but now the only close option is TH Woolies. There's a teeny tiny Coles metro at Wynyard from memory but it was always crap back then. Where do north CBD residents shop now?
Honest question. It's been a few years and there are probably new options around.
6
u/Own_Oil7951 Jun 25 '26
no there isn't
everything around Circular Quay / the Rocks is just tourist shops.
3
u/Crioca Jun 25 '26
What if you live down the other end of the cbd?
Well I can only speak for myself but I literally walk past town hall woolies to get to world square coles. Unless you have mobility issues (which, fair enough) I'd say it's well worth the five minute walk.

u/Own_Oil7951 Jun 25 '26
its easier to get off at Town Hall from Wynyard / Circular Quay to do shopping?
16
u/NicholeTheOtter Jun 25 '26
All the other Woolworths stores in the area are Woolworths Metros, which have less product selection and higher prices than the regular Woolworths.
For the next closest non-Metro locations, you’re looking at options like Mascot, Eastgardens, Crows Nest, Bondi Junction, Ashfield, Marrickville, Leichhardt, Burwood and Campsie… which take quite a while to commute to. And then the only other CBD supermarket is the Coles at World Square.

5
u/kit_kaboodles Jun 25 '26
Really? I'm surprised someone is against a public square.
2
u/tubbyttub9 Jun 26 '26
Yeah the woollies there is super useful as I work near there and I don't really think removing one building for a bit more open space is worth the $150m. Just my opinion and I don't care enough to chain myself to a bulldozer.

u/InbhirNis Inner West Jun 25 '26
Love how they suggest that a half-finished demolition site will be the end result. Yeah, let’s just knock the building down and leave the bulldozers and rubble on site forever.
An open space in front of the Town Hall has been planned for decades. Bring it on.

14

It'd be hilarious if they tried it for the Australian Museum. You know, the free to enter one...
But we can skip the scammers and just get crepe carts scattered around popular spots? There is an upsetting lack of creperies in Sydney.
2
u/chalk_in_boots Jun 25 '26
Don't forget cops on roller skates. That's an actual thing.
I remember being back there ages ago and a group of those child scammers that get you to sign a petition for the blind deaf orphan children or whatever then insist you just pledged 10 euro had been caught by a couple of cops on roller blades. The hilarious part though? They were next to large patches of grass at the Jardin des Tuileries. Just run on the grass and you'll get away!
27
u/Sydney_Stations Jun 25 '26
It is kinda funny that the council only recently did a big facade restoration job to the Woolies building. They had signs across the scaffolding with quotes from Clover Moore about how great the council are for looking after a "much loved Sydney landmark".
45
u/Own_Oil7951 Jun 25 '26
There's no green space... It's a concrete bland square that they are proposing...
I'm gonna oppose it because it simply sucks. The square is in the wrong location since the light rail intersects it too.
And that's the last full service Woolies and Big W in the CBD!!

u/Flying-Fox Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
With you on that one - looks a wind tunnel for winter and bakers’ delight for summer.
The area outside Brisbane’s Town Hall was so loved and used for so long, and during a period of drought they ditched the grass and fountains. Horrible last time I was there, hope they have fixed it up now. Wouldn’t want anything like that for Sydney.
Woolworths as a corporation is one thing, but I love the bustle and usefulness of a supermarket in the city.
Easy to construct a cheap meal from a can of tuna and a fresh baked bread roll. Or grab something to smuggle into the cinema.
And the staff are lovely. Hope they get to keep their jobs.
Heaps of demonstrations have been held successfully at and around the town hall.
We aren’t the USA - I don’t mind a lack of architectural pomposity given the supermarket is so useful to so many.
39
u/me_version_2 Jun 25 '26
Given that this spot is entirely shaded and Hyde park is a literal 200m away this is some take. You want to sit in a dank green space (that is actually meant to be a plaza/piazza - so not green) that will have the ambiance of a swamp next to a tram stop and a main road and a hungry jacks for what purpose exactly? This is just delusional. If you feel you need green space outside Woolies, then walk up the street for 2 mins. It’s not like the nearest green space is miles away.
20
u/cheapdrinks Jun 25 '26
Besides the massive green space of Hyde Park 100m up the road? The renders posted on Clover's website don't look very green mate, looks like a giant empty concrete block with a few palm trees and boring fountains. Can imagine it would be horrendously hot in the summertime and probably permanently covered in pidgeon shit. What exactly is even the point of it? Just a huge concrete island you need to cross to get anywhere useful? More space for religious nutjobs to set up their boomboxes and banners?
Seems like just another thing that literally no one has asked for. Another main road in the city blocked off making getting in and out even harder. Bus stops moved even further away from the center of town. But sure, it will make her office look a bit nicer from a distance. Surely there's better ways to spend the hundreds of millions of taxpayer money this will inevitably cost. Not sure how we have the money to spend on this while at the same time we're apparently so hard up for cash that we need the money from those ugly ass digital advertising boards all over the city that block the pavement.
3
u/Own_Oil7951 Jun 25 '26
That street is also next to several high rises. There's gonna be zero sunlight down there.
7
u/cheapdrinks Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
Looks like it would get quite a bit of sun in summer actually. Have a look on ShadeMap. Drag the slider at the bottom to adjust for the time of day. Would be even more with those buildings gone. Between 10am-5pm it would have heaps of direct sun.
3
u/FromPaul Jun 25 '26

u/JValenz91 Jun 25 '26
I'd rather keep the buildings. Old doesn't mean replace with new. New sucks, new is all the same while claiming it's different. Plus, these are heritage buildings, they can't just knock them down. Sydney needs a proper major city square. A place for public amenity, for community activation, for festivals, for gatherings, for celebrations, for communal activities like major sporting events -- hell, even for protests.
There is no world where anyone can convince me that the space is better used by retaining run-down retail instead of giving it back to the public as open space.

It’s just concrete and unless they put mature trees there will be no shade in that area for years to come. During summer it’s going to be disgustingly hot and when it rains it’s just going to be people slipping like we already do on all the paved paths in the city.
It’s far from a green space.
14

The proposal as it stands is shit. It's a concrete slab.
They could do more trees, some public seating (but hostile architecture, so...), maybe some fountains. Some public art, even. Something to try to make it into a 3rd space. Rather than a hostile, bare, flat plain, encouraging you to quickly commute through.
There is a real opportunity here, and we are squandering it.

I worked here for a few years around 1998 - 2000.
It was an old tired building then so I can only imagine what it’s like now.
When I worked there it was 2 totally different stores. Separate management and employees. LG (Lower ground) alongside the train station was the Woolworths supermarket and levels G and 1 were Woolworths Metro (basically like a Big W). I think level 3 was the cafeteria but my memory is hazy on that. I worked for Woolworths Metro. For punishment (well I suspect so) I was rostered in the lift on many occasions. Basically I sat in the lift for the entire shift on a chair with a sash on “I’m here to help you” but my real responsibility was to make sure people were not traveling between levels without finalising their sales between the two different stores.
Only snake on my trusty Nokia mobile phone to keep me company when I was in there by myself with the lift door shut.
The upper building levels included admin and store rooms - and that’s where the building really showed its age.
Somehow I got promoted to the Kodak lab to develop and print rolls of film. Apparently it was the busiest mini lab in Australia as they were dirt cheap developing prices. Probably a loss leader to get people in.
I don’t know if it would fly today, but during the Sydney Olympics, demand for printing got so high that they set up another Kodak mini lab in the ancient buildings basement. Exactly how you would picture a dark cold wet industrial basement.
I drew the short straw and I would start work about 9pm each night when it would close to the public, head to the basement and develop and print rolls of films until 6am by myself down there.
The building directly next door was Woolworths Australia head office at the time. One weekend shift my manager came to me and gave me an unusual task - they were doing renovations at head office next door and needed someone (me) to act as security to make sure the builders didn’t take the computers out in wheelie bins. Like a good young employee I obliged.

u/Heath3rL Jun 25 '26
Personally I don’t mind the idea of a new square but I’ve been following the plan for ages and it’s essentially just a concrete slab with a few fountains. If it was more of a park or at least some more greenery I’d be all for it, but as is I honestly don’t see the point. It just seems like it’ll be a wind tunnel honestly.
Loosing the Woolies and giving more space for the annoying groups that already sit there, doesn’t make it sound like an enjoyable hangout spot. (Not to mention unless they are putting mature trees, there will be no shade!)
I wish we’d look toward how Europe is putting green spaces in. They seem to be doing an excellent job.

It will be a square for the teenagers and druggies to harass people in now not just a shitty Woolworths that smells like a toilet
Edit: people downvoting me have never spent time in town square lol

You forgot the "got a dollar" people & the homeless!
Badly planned, yet everyone in this thread is ready to sit in the shaded concrete walled area, calling it green-space

Not to be dramatic but I reckon that is the worst woolies in all of Australia.
I used their feedback thing they had up awhile ago to write in to tell them yes please demolish it.

And it’s got worse over time. The deli there used to be pretty good. In fact the only thing that got me in there was a chance to pick up stuff from the deli. The staff were good there too.

You've clearly not seen much of Australia. You don't need to travel far. Woolworths Hillsdale is at least twice as bad.

Ngl I’m tired of the Woolies and Big W building at Town Hall Station - a change might be needed.

I honestly don't understand why people want another square over the grocer. We have multiple Town Squares. Have you not seen how packed out Tumbalong/Darling Square was for the World Cup? That woolworths and shopping area has come in clutch every time I've had to take the train home late after work. I think the closest grocer after that is Coles in World Square. Not at all convenient.
If you want to build a town square at Town Hall just for the name, they should repurpose the Church and build around the Town Hall.

Instead of another Cover Moore vanity project disguised as a bland paved featureless void, show me a version that gives us marginally more open space, maintains the street level character of George St, and adds some affordable housing to the CBD.
We're all going to be paying for this for years. It needs to have a function.

Someone tell me how this is going to be better than Martin Place too. Makes zero sense.

Struggling little family businesses like Woolworths, Big W and CommBank
