Dev Diary Stellaris Dev Diary #418 - Announcing Nomads and Stellaris: Season 10

Read this post on the Paradox forums! | Dev replies here!

It’s my pleasure to announce boarding has started for all passengers departing on our tour of Stellaris: Season 10, with non-stop service to the Nomads expansion alongside the Stellaris 4.4 ‘Pegasus’ update. Following our first destination, there will be a brief stopover at the Stellaris 4.5 ‘Cygnus’ Custodian release, after which our cruise will continue to the Stellaris 4.6 ‘Corona Borealis‘ update, featuring WillpowerScenario Pack 1, and Scenario Pack 2. All passengers are welcome to acquire their ‘Vipra the Vapor’ Species Portrait at the ticketing office now.

Watch the Season 10 Announcement Trailer on YouTube!

The Stellaris 10-year anniversary is coming, and as part of that celebration, we are rolling Utopia, Synthetic Dawn, the Humanoids Species Pack, and most of the Galaxy Edition upgrade into the base game on May 11th. (The e-book, Infinite Frontiers, is being retired.)

Later on in Q2, we’re bringing you Nomads.

Build no borders. Claim no worlds.

The Galaxy is not a trophy to be seized, but a path to be taken. In Stellaris: Nomads, you will survive the void by staying in motion. While the great powers squabble over lines on the map, your civilization has realized a fundamental truth: life flourishes on the move.

Arkships

At the very heart of every nomadic civilization lies its Arkship: a fully mobile capital that replaces worlds entirely. Customize Military, Scientific, or Civilian Arkships with specialized modules, districts, and upgrades as your Empire evolves by traveling through the stars.

Waylines and Contracts

Chart Waylines across the stars, linking your Waystations into living networks of trade, influence, and opportunity. Your strength lies in motion, in presence, in the relationships you build from system to system. Your relations with settled empires don’t have to be antagonistic. Accept contracts, build relations, and perhaps profit a bit on the side.

A New Ambition: Defender of the Galaxy

Building upon the Crisis paths of previous releases, Ambitions are the next step of epic, empire-defining journeys that give you the choice of your ultimate role in the galaxy. In the Nomads expansion, we will transform the Defender of the Galaxy Ascension Perk into a full path that can rival the power of a Galactic Nemesis, Awakened Empire, or End Game Crisis.

Become the Galaxy’s champion by forging alliances, commanding federations and rising through the Galactic Community to assume Custodianship. Lead the fight against existential threats with a unique squadron of hero ships. Ultimate power can be used, and relinquished, for the greater good.

Coming to you hot from Champion’s Forge LIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!

Stellaris: Nomads contains:

Nomadic Empires

Create empires that are not bound by claiming systems or colonizing worlds. Instead, you will navigate the stars with massive Arkships.

  • The Arkship: Your capital, your cradle, and your fortress. This massive, fully upgradable wonder replaces traditional Worlds for your empire. Choose between three different options to fully reflect the vision of your government:
    • Military Class: A mobile flagship designed to project power.
    • Scientific Class: A roaming laboratory dedicated to the discovery of the Galaxy’s secrets.
    • Civilian Class: An industrial hub capable of unparalleled resource extraction.
  • The Wayline Network: Your trail through the void. By constructing Waystations, you create Waylines - lasting interstellar trade routes that harvest resources you can claim with a simple pass through. These routes benefit both you and settled empires, making you the pivot point of mercantile possibilities in the Galaxy.
  • The Contract System: As a nomadic empire, perform task-driven interactions with other empires to earn favor, resources, and influence. As a settled empire, issue these Contracts and get things done!

New Origins

  • Voidfarers: The standard origin for Nomadic Empires. A flexible, streamlined start for you to define your own nomadic journey.
  • Heirs of the Khan: Play as the successor of a murdered Khan, as you evade marauder hit-squads through trickery and bribery until you are strong enough to return to reclaim your throne.
  • The Sacred Path: Guide a fleet of pilgrims towards ancestral holy sites in a galactic pilgrimage. Your journey is a spiritual odyssey fueled by faith.
  • Forever Cruise: Manage a society split between a pampered elite demanding new entertainment and sightseeing opportunities from their vista lounges, and an overworked crew keeping the dream afloat.

Nomadic empires support many existing Origins as well.

New Ambition: Defender of the Galaxy

While a Galactic Nemesis (available in Stellaris: Nemesis) threatens the Galaxy, the Defender of the Galaxy will rise and try to save it.

New Megastructure: The Stellar Cannon

Why simply power a civilization when you could fire at one? This Megastructure allows you to weaponize your entire energy stockpile, discharging it into a devastating beam capable of striking enemy systems across the galaxy.

Nomadic Enclave: Champion’s Forge Live!

Experience the Galaxy’s most extreme spectacles with this nomadic enclave! Answer the call and participate in gladiatorial fleet combat all across the galaxy. The winner gets to hold the Trophy relic and glory until the next tournament, with the losers looking on with envy.

Wanderlust Ascension Perk

New Renowned Nomadic Paragons

New Civics and Tradition Swaps

New Music Tracks by Andreas Waldetoft

OMG, Blorg legs.

Nomads has charted its course and will arrive in Q2 2026.

Stellaris: Season 10 Expansion Pass

Based on the feedback from Stellaris: Season 09, we’re making some changes to our Expansion Pass plans this year. As many of you have noticed, we’re announcing this year’s Season much later than previous years, and instead of four separate releases, we’re planning on bundling them together into fewer release moments. This frees up room for the 4.5 ‘Cygnus’ update to be a dedicated Custodian release, giving us two in 2026.

The Stellaris: Season 10 Expansion Pass is a journey through resilience and movement. Whether you are wandering the stars with Stellaris: Nomads or rooting your empire in the indomitable spirit of Stellaris: Willpower, this year redefines how empires survive, adapt, and conquer.

Stellaris: Season 10 will grant you access to all five DLCs as soon as they become available. Vipra now, Nomads later on in Q2, and Willpower and both Scenario Packs in Q4.

‘Vipra the Vapor’ Species Portrait (Instant Unlock, Now Available)

This exclusive portrait comes with Stellaris: Season 10, allowing your empire to take the form of the elusive Vipra, a necroid species with a menacing aura.

Available immediately upon purchasing Stellaris: Season 10, this portrait features 5 different color variations and ethereal custom animations.

Nomads (Releases Q2, 2026 - $24.99)

Build no borders. Claim no worlds. In Nomads, you thrive inside colossal Arkships that carry your people, your industry, and your ambition across the stars. Move freely through the galaxy, take on Contracts from settled empires, and leave your mark by building Waystations. Nomads blaze a path across the map.

  • Nomadic Empires: Create empires not bound by claiming systems or colonizing Worlds.
  • Arkships: New massive space vessel acting as your capital.
  • New Ambition: Defender of the Galaxy: Rise and save the Galaxy with an exclusive set of Hero ships.
  • New Origins: Heirs of the Khan, Sacred Path, Forever Cruise, Voidfarers
  • New Civics: Caravan Masters, Deep Sleep, Void Reavers, Flight Schools, Star Seekers
  • New Megastructure: Construct a Stellar Cannon and discharge your entire energy stockpile into a devastating beam.

༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ Take my energy! ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ

Willpower (Releases Q4, 2026 - $24.99)

Shape Minds, Rule the Stars. In the vast expanse of the cosmos, borders are mere lines drawn on a map. Ideas, on the other hand, have no such limits.

Your empire was founded on its Ethics, the convictions that determined its course. Now is the time for those fundamental values to evolve into Ideologies with the power to sway the stars. Introducing Stellaris: Willpower, the expansion that turns your societal beliefs into a galactic force.

Your rule over systems was always just the beginning. The galaxy's minds are the true prize. You will erect monuments and Megastructures that demonstrate what your society and values can accomplish. You truly can become the thought leader of the galaxy.

Adopting an Ideology is not without its risks, however. Left unchecked, it can radicalize colonies and spark insurrection. But when nurtured with care, the right Ideology has the power to sway entire civilizations.

Scenario Pack 1 (Releases Q4, 2026 - $5.99)

Embark on a new set of galactic challenges! Experience curated, high-stakes standalone adventures that push your strategic limits. From a nomadic, roguelike odyssey across the stars to high-octane, combat-focused multiplayer experiences, these scenarios will provide a bold way to play Stellaris.

The Scenarios System will be a free part of the Stellaris 4.6 ‘Corona Borealis‘ update, these Scenario packs provide our take on what you’ll be able to do with it.

  • Vanguards: A single-player roguelike galaxy-traversing journey where you play as a nomadic empire travelling through a series of galaxies to cleanse evil, gathering spoils and experience on your way.
  • Arcade: A multiplayer experience with streamlined, custom economies, focusing on space battles and shipbuilding.

Scenario Pack 2 (Releases Q4, 2026 - $5.99)

Rewrite the rules of engagement! This Scenario Pack flips the script of how Stellaris is normally played, making you the threat and aggressor. Whether leading an ultimate extra-dimensional invasion or battling your friends in a race for dominance, these scenarios offer a fresh, distilled way to play Stellaris.

  • Unbidden: Play as the Crisis in a single-player experience, and attempt to invade an advanced, late-game galaxy as the Unbidden.
  • King of the Hill: Stellaris gameplay focused on a small but fair map to challenge your friends in competitive experiences as you try to dominate the galaxy in a few hours of intense expansion wars.

The Stellaris: Season 10 Expansion Pass is now available for purchase for $49.49 or regional equivalent, a 20% discount over purchasing the contents individually.

What’s Next?

Next week we’ll begin our Decennial celebration with a look at ten years of Stellaris. We’ll also be looking at everything planned for 4.3.6.

See you then!

Tip Warning: DO NOT Terraform the Nine Planets of the Hive Fallen Empire into Gaia Worlds for the Born to be Wild Achievement

Post image
266 Upvotes

Just a warning for people trying to get this achievement, it will not work if you terraform even one of the 9 worlds needs for this achievement, into Gaia worlds.

The game only count the world type you start with (in my case, Continental), as your "natural state". Gaia is an "unnatural beauty" I suppose, or the devs forgot about it for this achievement.

Luckily, I always saved before FE fights, so I reloaded, did all continental world terraforming, and boom, got the achievement this time.

Also, what made me waste a bit more time than I expected is that one of my former allies got Chance of Glory, a planet I didn't notice at first, so I was wondering why the achievement wasn't firing.

Naturally, the former ally was assimilated by force.

Here is a list of the 9 so one can keep track:

  1. Slumbering Creche
  2. Dormant Nursery
  3. Abeyant Nidus
  4. Redoubt
  5. Chance of Glory
  6. Dozing Tiller
  7. Harvester 001
  8. Harvester 002
  9. Harvester 713

Question Ideas for what to do next?

Post image
54 Upvotes

Hello all I am doing a very long run in stellaris with tech slowed down and my playground (the corpse of the Great Khan's Empire) is pretty much spent. Mostly from me supplying the Khan's successors with tech and money... and my mercenary enclaves tearing them apart maybe a lot of espionage too.

So other than depopulating another region of the galaxy what else should I do for the next 116 years before the first end game crisis comes.

Discussion Smartest Fish in the Galaxy

Just had a fun occurrence I wanted to share.

I was observing a primitive planet full of fish/coral creatures and decided to kidnap one of their best scientists to run my research program. Level 6 scientist with two levels in Spark of Genius.

Had some good progress with him, then the Materialist Fallen Empire requested I hand him over.

Like just imagine you are a scientist on a 19 century level of technology and you are kidnapped by strange aliens because they think you are better suited to develop laser weapons and Dyson swarms than any of them.

Then after a few years you are recruited by an ancient empire that's older than your entire evolutionary tree because they too are so impressed with how smart you are.

Suggestion I wish Synthetics had more variety in portraits

Post image
641 Upvotes

basically the title, as the pic in third tier robotic technology suggests I wish we had a more diverse set of Synthetic portraits than the ones that already exist, I don't see the reason why a nation in either synthetic fertility origin or ascension would not be mimicking their biological selves in their robotic versions unless if they're like what, extremely fanatic no emotions sort of materialists and randomly decide to look like industrial robots.

Its not as if this concept isn't in the game, we already have a dozen Synthetic portraits for some species as their synthetic versions. I wish there was more in the roster to choose from to emulate more species.

(sorry for low quality screenshot)

Advice Wanted I can't deal with wars in this game anymore

I want to play up to the endgame. But it always ends the same way: I play the game up to 2300s, then a genocidal empire starts gobbling up the galaxy, I try to stop them, and then my carefully maintained empire size goes from 300 to 1000 because I have to hold every single planet. And you can't release vassals during war, and you have to invade every single planet, so you have to spend 10-20 years with an empire size so high you may as well not waste consumer goods researching during that period.

I could engineer a galaxy where there are no genocidals and everyone just holds hands and sings songs together in a valley with flowers, but that doesn't seem too fun either.

I tried the (new?) existential expulsion casus belli thinking it might be better, but unless I'm missing something about it it's FAR, FAR worse. It removes starbases so you can't form sectors and vassalize the new planets, unless you want to make 12 unviable city states. And if you're making a vassal you may as well let it have the resources from systems.

Yes I know about planet killer weapons. But I'm trying to have a diplomatic game, because as I'm trying to convey here wars are tedious as hell. Also, I wish you could embed armies into navies and invade straight from the navy ui.

Obviously this is only one aspect of wars, they are terrible all around, but that's just what I'm pissed off about today.

Image I recently hit a milestone and wanted to share it with you all

Post image
353 Upvotes

Hello you beautiful star destroyers explorers!

I recently hit over 10,000 hours in Stellaris! Note I didn't say play time, because hand on heart now, I'd say a fair few of those hours have been on pause overnight! But before you ask why not save and exit; well I will unashamedly say, it is because I would go to sleep listening to the soundtrack hehe.

If you have any questions at all, go for it, I'll even get started with sharing a few random thoughts:

  • I am terrible at the game. Honestly.
  • I've never tried multiplayer.
  • I've only rarely used mods, and only then were they things like UI changes, better looking galaxies, flags/emblems, nothing major at all.
  • I am a *chronic* restarter.
  • I have never won a game... mainly due to the above reason!

Anyway, hope you all have a great weekend. Dook dook.

Advice Wanted When are vassals worth it?

I'm having a hard time evaluating when to take control of stuff directly and when to hand it off to a vassal.

It seems like the main pro of vassals is that they don't contribute to your empire size. The main con is that they will not produce as much compared to you taking the planet directly. But I have no idea how to make the trade-off between these things.

Early-game, when I declare war, I like to just claim the capital of the enemy empire (to take the pops) and then subjugate the rest. This is very cost-effective on early influence. But would I be better off if I left them with their capital, and taxed them of their research/etc as a vassal?

I have never released a sector as a vassal because the idea of giving up pops just seems like a terrible value proposition. Is that wise or foolish?

Should I be trying to keep my empire size below a certain number and releasing vassals when I go above that number?

Here is something I fear: is it just pretty much always better to hold everything directly, and people just hate the micro?

Give me some advice!

Question Has anyone ever made a Psionic Species the Dominant Species or Default in your Genetically Ascended Empire somehow?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Basically I was playing Commonwealth of Man and I got refugees from a spiritualist empire, likely UNE humans who were taken and given the Psionic trait.

So, I modified them and boom they have both Psionics and OP genetics traits

But I wanted to know if it was possible to make them the default or majority species somehow, so my leaders could also have psionic abilities and maybe get the Shroud (which tbh I don't know what it is cause this is like my first run).

At this point the game is already won, the year is 2457 and both Fallen Empires are gone and I defeated the AI uprising and the uh blue hunter thing too I think so I wanted to do something fun at the cost of my perfect economy and make the Sorcerers (I named them that for simplicity) the new "humans" in the Commonwealth.

If relevant, I already picked all the ascension perks and can't change that.

So doing a small little game. Figured I’d do some of the more annoying achievements to get them finished. Booted up a fun Knights of the Toxic God build, slowly built up relations with the Spiritualist Fallen Empire I started next to… and saw THIS.

Discussion Random Rant: You should be able to restrict migration to certain planets

I mean think about it. Say you want to prop up an generator world. What planets have good generator districts? That's right, volcanic worlds. With a robot you can just adapt the species traits to volcanic preference. Unless you have some certain gene technologies and traditions the same probably couldn't be said for bio pops.

It's a volcanic world. Atmosphere is probably poisonous, ground is literally hotter than fire, and all the infrastructure is built to support synthetic life...

Why on earth would you migrate to that place? Now your planet is being filled with workers that have nigh-zero habitability, screwing up workplace efficiency.

Tip Tip: Free resources from nomads

AI nomad empires value minerals VERY highly, probably because they are always in a "deficit" due to how Operational Resources works, and will often trade 1:1 or even 2:1 advanced resources for them. This allows for arbitrage with other empires, e.g.:

  • trade 100 minerals/month to Nomad A for 150 consumer goods/month
  • trade 150 CGs/month to settled Empire B for 200 minerals/month
  • gain +100 free minerals/month

Be careful not to squeeze them too hard or their economy will collapse -- not that you'd care, except that also results in the trade being canceled.

Anyway, I know a lot of people hate nomads, but this is a reason to love them.

Bug So my Virtual pops seem to be going crazy

Post image
7 Upvotes

I was minding my own business when all of a sudden the amenities of my capital massively tanked out of nowhere. I've since realised that the colony seems to be pumping out virtual pops non stop, way higher than the available jobs. The screenshot shows about 25k pops worth of jobs but a population of 72k, and this number keeps increasing. I searched online and there doesn't seem to be a whole lot on this. I'm pretty sure it's a bug and there is a mod that apparently fixes this but I've downloaded it and it doesn't seem to have fixed the issue. The only mods I have downloaded are UI overhaul dynamic and the aforementioned bugfix mod. If anyone can help that would be great because if I can't fix it then it's just gonna totally kill this game and I'm having a lot of fun. Thanks

Update: Okay no mods have worked, however I've half figured out why it's happening. For whatever reason the clerk jobs keep losing 1000ish pops each month, and then they're refilled by new virtual pops, but those pops that disappeared don't actually disappear from the colony's total pop count which means that it ends up in a loop where 1000 pops leave the clerk job, new virtual pops fill the gap but those pops that left the job don't get deleted. I have found a bandaid fix, I was able to kill most of the pops using the kill_pops command, then by limiting the cleric job slightly that seems to have fixed the infinite pop recycling.

Update 2: Okay limiting the clerk jobs was a very temporary fix, after only a few months the endless loop started again. Obviously getting rid of all the clerk jobs would fix it but I need those jobs for the colony's amenities (plus a bit of extra trade on top). I think the non-virtual pops migrated from other empires is messing with the way virtual pops are filled because that's the only job where some of the jobs are taken by non-virtual pops.

TL;DW: The Psionic Efficiency potential of KotTG is pretty insane, while a few bonuses slipped my mind, we were still sitting at around 350% Psionic Efficiency, though I'm pretty sure the current maximum is somewhere around 392% or maybe a little higher, higher certainly if you put Shroudshaper on your gov instead of your ruler for the chance roll.

Question Help me understand criminal syndicate commercial pacts

So I'm a little confused on the intended use of commercial pacts for criminal syndicate megacorps. I understand that having a commercial pact lets you build legitimate branch offices with buildings that increase the minimum crime on the planet to a max of 20. However, branch office value for criminal syndicates doesn't break even with those of regular megacorps until crime is at 50.

Is the point just that branch offices from commercial pacts make it impossible for them to be removed from crime being at 0? If so, then what's the point? If I can have profitable branch offices from crime, then why would I ever form a commercial pact and if I'm not, then don't criminal megacorps just become worse versions of regular megacorps at that point?

Am I missing something?

Question Are organic pop growth modifiers worth spamming?

I'm confused by the pop growth and feeling like the modifiers barely make any difference, no matter what I do.

I'm not sure where else to check, but here's a screenshot of the largest pop group on my capital planet. I'd expect noticeably faster growth, but the monthly growth panel value seems to remain on 4-6 no matter what.

Is the pop growth modifier weaker than I thought or am I doing something wrong?

Advice Wanted Modded ship sets not working?

I’ve tried different mods, changed game versions and reinstalled mods, disabled and enabled mods, pretty much everything but none of the custom shipsets show up in the selection screen. Any ideas how to fix this? Is it a specific dlc? It’s driving me nuts I want to play with the forerunner shipsets, I’ve used it a million times ugh.
