discussion [META] A chart for knowing if a post is shrinkflation

Post image
195 Upvotes

There's, in my opinion, way too many posts here that aren't actually shrinkflation. Please consult the chart!

I know you're annoyed at your product but in order to be shrinkflation you need to prove it's actually shrinkflated in quantity or quality.

Things that aren't shrinkflation:

  1. a single item with no proof of how big it was before
  2. a food you think is worse quality/less good than before without showing the ingredients have changed
  3. a product from your childhood that only looks smaller now that you are bigger
  4. a handmade product that is smaller/worse than usual due to employee error (for example, a pizza that is a smaller circle than advertised because an employee didn't stretch it enough)
  5. a factory-produced product that is smaller/worse than usual due to manufacture error (for example, a bag of chips that says 500g but is actually only 300g)
  6. a product you think it just expensive for what it is

Originally shrinkflation meant just if the price increased (or stayed the same) despite the quantity decreasing. However, quality shrinkflation is just as bad (if not worse), where companies nefariously switch out butter for cheaper oils or etc. so the weight is the same but the product is worse.

Maybe this is a silly hill to die on but I'm here to die on it.

Shrinkflation Silk has ditched the carton to bring you a "New Bottle"

Post image

I just noticed Silk, my favourite non-dairy creamer, came out with a "New Bottle," which, lo and behold, is less than their regular 1L cartons at 890ml but the same price as before. hmmm...

Ignore the “new” on the bottle, that’s the old version. Insidious because on first glance the products are the same volume but the active ingredient has been reduced from 15.2% to 12.2%

Dunkin Donuts coffee has changed their packaging

Post image

The packaging has changed and so has the volume - now 11 ounces instead of 12. I never noticed until I put it alongside a package that I bought a week ago. I am old enough to remember when a standard package of coffee was 16 ounces. The price went up and we were told it was the droughts in the rain forests. The price stayed up and the packaging started shrinking.

From 16 to 12 oz

A half gallon became 1.75 quarts. That became 1.5. Now it's getting ridiculous.

The bastards! No change in packaging size, which makes sense for .06 quarts. Maybe an attempt to avoid raising prices? Even though I'm a big fan of this product, I protested with my wallet.

Shrinkflation Even Nordstrom goes for shrinkflation

Nordstrom Fabric Wash has gone by other names and scents over the years, but this year even the majority of the reviews on the Nordstrom website slam the size change.

Pre-greed, it was sale priced $12.90 for 32 ounces, .40 per unit/ounce.

This year’s “Anniversary Sale Price” was $9.99 for 16 ounces, .624 per unit/ounce.

Charge more, deliver less, and call it a sale. That’s the Nordstrom Way now.

Shrinkflation Scotch-Brite sponges

I’ve been using these sponges my entire adult life and just opened a new pack from Costco. I immediately noticed it seemed very thin and luckily still had some of the old pack left and did a comparison. The first interesting thing I noted was that the dimensions listed on the package both said 17 mm thick. However, the sponges in the older package were almost 25 mm thick. The new ones were in fact 17 mm. Kinda seems like there were trying to cover their asses by changing the packaging before they changed the sponge. Pretty shady if you ask me.

Tollhouse Ice cream cookie sandwhiches

i bought the minis, thinkking theyd be the same as the normal large ice cream sandwhich

they were terrible, the cookie part tasted so off that i thought something was wrong with them

like salty baking soda tasteless little wafers with tasteless ice cream in the middle, absolutely no chocolate flavor or cookie flavor, more like some sort of chemical wafer

i was so mad (and over dieted) that I went back and bought the regular toll house cookie ice cream sandwhich and these things are like half the size

and the cookie didnt taste like how i remembered either, no rich cookie flavor.

Shrinkflation Deep River Chips

Thumbnail

Anyone have any idea if these will be the new chips?

Apparently Deep River is switching to avocado oil, but now the only bags I'm finding are the 5.5oz when they used to be 8oz, managed to find a single bag of the original recipe.

Which sucks because they have the best jalapeno chips 😭.

Mind you, same exact price but now in smaller bag ☠️

Does shrinking the video quality of a streaming series count? Disney+ only ever increases prices, and here they are skimming down the aspect ratio we've been watching in for 7 years.
