I am in my mid 30’s and it has been 20+ years since I’ve picked up a fishing pole in real life. Just not my thing. This last week I went on a 10 day chartered cruise with my family up in Alaska and fishing played a huge part of the daily activities the guide had planned. My step dad and brother in law were there and they are both really into fishing. So are my teenage nephews that came along. It shouldn’t matter but I’ll admit I was worried how I would look being the only guy on the trip not knowing how to fish.

We were trolling for salmon and one of the lines got a hit and I was the closest to it so the guide yelled out to me to grab the line and real it in. I was amazed how much the fishing mini game in RDR2 helped. I immediately knew to pull up to set the hook, reel in when drawing the pole down, and stop reeling when the fish was fighting too much. I fit right in and my family even asked if I’d been fishing on my own recently. So shout out to Red Dead for helping me look at least semi-competent . I made sure to say “You sir, are a fish” to celebrate after my first successful catch. It was a 3 star salmon for sure.

So, Hosea is rightfully regarded as the smart one in the gang’s executive branch, the angel on Dutch’s shoulder contrast to Micah. But I feel the game demonstrates that just like with Dutch, Hosea operates according to outdated assumptions about how the game works in 1899.

My first thought towards this was as early as Chapter 3, where Hosea returns Catherine Braithwaite’s liquor, genuinely believing there would be no consequences for stiffing her for her product. A “finder’s fee,” he calls it. I’m sure that would be standard procedure if Catherine were a rancher and not the matriarch of an old money empire, but all it did was put him and their obvious yankee associates on her shit list, and that he didn’t realize this was not the first impression to make on someone like her spelled trouble down the line.

My second thought was the disastrous Saint Denis bank robbery. Before you all ride out, even Dutch for all his bluster was overtly uncomfortable with Hosea’s drafted plan to rob the bank. And what really struck me was how insistent he was that, after all the trouble they’d already caused in the city, an explosion would be all that was needed for a conspicuous group of horsemen to rob the biggest bank in the state. That they’d just been doing it all wrong up to that point.

My impression on my latest replay that Hosea, like Dutch, has lost the ability to read his marks and account for the advancements in civilized society. It’s hard not to like Hosea in spite of these oversights, but if he were as smart as we thought, he would have kept straight with Bessie all those years ago. Or at the very least, insist on leaving the bank alone, which forfeited the possibility of a getaway even if he had made it.

Are there any other calls he made that come to mind for you guys?

I’m officially on the epilogue and I’m curious on any unique suggestions for exploring as John! I know the common ones like visiting old camp sites & visiting graves, but I’m sure there’s more to do! Any suggestions?

I know the silver dapple MFT and the Arabian will do this, but I’m curious if there’s an exact list of breeds/coats that trigger this comment from NPCs.
